The next movie I’ll be reviewing is the 2017 film La Llamada (Holy Camp!). It is a musical comedy that also features plenty of drama and a journey of personal discovery undertaken by five women. This is the second time I’ve watched it—this latest viewing was specifically for the purpose of writing this review.
You could say this film is a musical comedy with a touch of teen drama; it was shot in Segovia. It is a Spanish film that—according to what I read—"is the film adaptation of the stage musical of the same name created by the directors themselves in 2013. It began as a small production in the lobby of Madrid's Teatro Lara and ended up becoming a massive cultural phenomenon with a years-long run."
Directing and screenwriting duties were handled by: Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo (popularly known as "Los Javis")
Macarena García as María Casado
Anna Castillo as Susana Romero
Belén Cuesta as Sister Milagros
Gracia Olayo as Mother Bernarda de los Arcos
Richard Collins-Moore as God
I don't usually like musical comedies, but let me tell you, the songs here—and the performances—are top-notch. I was impressed by the performance of Richard Collins, the British actor who sang—both live and in the studio—all the Whitney Houston tracks his character (God) sings to María, a teenage girl going through a phase of self-discovery. The songs performed by... ...performed by him were:
In fact, a key factor in his casting—dating back to the stage production's debut in 2013—was his ability to perform that kind of demanding vocal range live, combining power with comic nuance. What surprised me most was that the film used neither dubbing nor Whitney Houston's original vocals; the songs were recorded and performed entirely by him, and they were undoubtedly among the musical highlights of the movie.
The other songs performed by the girls and the nuns were excellent and, at times, very funny.
Another notable musical aspect of the film was the awards and recognition it received: it was nominated for five Goya Awards in 2018, winning the Goya for Best Original Song for the track "La llamada," composed and performed by the singer Leiva.
I invite you to enjoy this story and join these women on a journey of self-discovery where music becomes the driving force behind their transformation. It is one of those stories that leaves you with a wonderful feeling and is well worth watching.
