South Korean cinema has been growing with the passing of time in the international sphere with works that not only captivate for their incredible technique but also for the depth of their narratives and their captivating ideas. One of these cinematic gems that I happened to get through a movie app is *I Saw The Devil* (2010), directed by Kim Jee-woon. This is not a film for those who are sensitive to facts such as murder, rape, graphic violence or those who are looking for a story with happy endings; this film explores in a raw way the idea of revenge and the decomposition of the human being before this emotion that brings nothing good but that sometimes we can feel, showing the darkest and most sinister side of the human being.

The plot begins with scenes of great violence and very explicit about an event: Joo-yeon, who is the daughter of a police chief and fiancée of a secret agent - Kim Soo-hyun -, is brutally murdered by the sadistic serial killer Kyung-chul, who has no scruple or remorse of conscience when choosing his victims, mostly young women, and takes pleasure in having them in a state of vulnerability and then murdering them. This fact makes our protagonist Soo-hyun start a descent of his life and becomes someone totally different from who he was before the brutal death of his girlfriend. So Soo-hyun begins a game of hunting for the killer and this will bring him many moments of anguish to discover who is the person who killed his girlfriend and other women as well. Undoubtedly the fact of living such a traumatic event becomes the catalyst for the hellish descent that Soo-hyun, masterfully played by Lee Byung-hun, lives. The protagonist, in his thirst for revenge, becomes a predator as relentless as the killer played by Choi Min-sik.

Kyung-chul's character is a man who is disturbing just by looking at him, besides possessing a great coldness, his mind is that of a psychopath and murderer who has no remorse and enjoys seeing his victims suffer and beg, and who rapes them before murdering them. Choi Min-sik delivers a performance that makes your skin crawl, building a villain who is both a monster and a mirror of the darkest parts of any person. The psyche of this killer is a torturous labyrinth that you try to understand but that leads you to feel so much hatred for all the heinous deeds he commits and who cares about nothing but his own pleasure.

The cinematography and aesthetics of *I Saw The Devil* are impeccable. Kim Jee-woon's direction creates palpable tension in every scene, allowing no respite, no moment of safety in which to settle back. The action scenes are planned with a precision that could be considered almost poetic, if it were not for the viscerality of the content they show. Moving into the deeper themes, the desire for revenge is a constant that torments the viewer with an essential question: What makes us human, the capacity to love or to hate? Soo-hyun, through his vengeful crusade, shows us how the line between victim and perpetrator can become blurred, to the point where it blurs completely.

I Saw The Devil* does not revel in horror for horror's sake, but rather seems to make an implicit social critique. The impunity with which Kyung-chul commits his crimes and the ineffectiveness of the authorities to stop him are a commentary on certain systemic failures within the realm of security and justice, universally relevant and especially resonant issues in contemporary society. As we assimilate the narrative, we come to the conclusion that Soo-hyun sees the devil not only in Kyung-chul, but also in himself. The title can be interpreted as an acknowledgment of the protagonist's inner duality, who sees her own darkness reflected in the evil of others. It is remarkable how the film makes us question who the "devil" of the title really is.

Revenge acts as a slow poison that alters both characters, leading them down paths of self-destruction and brutality. In Soo-hyun's case, revenge transforms him from protector to aggressor; he moves from one moral pole to the other extreme, indicating the fine line between justice and his personal life. His evolution reveals the fragility of the human spirit when faced with trauma and the desire for retaliation. This movie impacted me too much, to the point that the two and a half hours that the movie lasts went by quite fast but I felt a lot of suspense because there is always something happening that makes the story even worse, no doubt this is one of the South Korean drama movies that many have already seen and is considered a cult movie.

It is impressive to watch, I do not recommend minors to do so because it has quite graphic and violent scenes where people are shown killed in a violent way and as many Asian films did not hesitate to emphasize them. I really think it is one of those movies that are hard to forget and that we all have seen at least once, I still like Asian cinema and I hope to continue watching more movies of different genres because they have a great ability to convey emotions to the viewer that leave you almost with an existential crisis at the end of watching these films. You can find this movie on HiTV, an application of Asian series and movies and also on Netflix, PrimeVideo and other online movie platforms.

  2. I Saw the Devil (2010): a brutal and savage thriller | un thriller brutal y salvaje@cristiancaicedo1046d

A very gory revenge story Una historia de venganza muy gore

Within a whole universe of Asian films, actors and directors, those who have gained the most popularity in the West in recent years have been those from Japan and South Korea. Names like Hirokazu Koreeda or Bong Joon-ho, or titles like Parasites and Drive My Car have helped spread other earlier classics like Oldboy or Ran and that's why on my list of films to see - as surely as many of you - there are a huge number of Asian names.

Among those many names, there is the 2010 film Angmareul boatda (I Saw The Devil), directed by Kim Jee-woon, considered one of the best thrillers made in South Korea. And since that's where great thrillers like Memories of Murder come from, I decided to put it on my list a long time ago and finally got to see it this week. In a few words I Saw the Devil is a story of revenge. Like many of these stories, the film opens with the brutal murder of a young woman at the hands of a dangerous psychopath who seems to be used to killing young women he finds alone in out-of-the-way places for pleasure (there is a great deal of violence towards women throughout the film, which may be hard for some to see). Adding to the drama, not only is the young woman the daughter of a former police chief - a man who devoted thirty years of service to protecting his citizens - but Soo-hyun, the girl's boyfriend, is a secret agent who frustrated and devastated by pain, he swears to take revenge and inflict on the murderer all the pain that he put his beloved through.

    Soo-hyun

The girl's father gives Soo-hyun the file of the four suspects in the crime, men who in the past have been accused of similar crimes and after requesting a special two-week leave from work, claiming it is to mourn, begins a process of hunting without distinction: he will not find out beforehand who did it. He will find each of these men and torture them until he discovers who the real culprit is.

But when our secret agent finds Kyung-chul, the real killer, it's not even an hour into the movie (which isn't enough considering the film is 144 minutes long), how are they going to extend the plot so much? It turns out that Soo-hyun wants to prolong the murderer's suffering, torturing him, inflicting pain on him, enough to make him despair, but not enough to kill him: he wants to leave him alive and free him, to catch him again later and torture him a little more, because he believes that only that way his revenge will be fair. Baffled by this attitude, the killer is confused at first, but then only becomes even more enraged and an unstoppable spiral of violence and blood ensues through which three forces run: Kyung-chul, Soo-hyun and the city police who's on the trail, not only of the murderer of the former chief's daughter, but also of that vigilante who is taking the law into his own hands.

    Kyung-chul

I Saw the Devil is a serial killer police thriller, a revenge story, but also a very gory film in which there are wild and disturbing scenes due to how graphic they are: rape, dismemberment, murder, torture, cannibalism, everything is present, and some scenes about the wounds inflicted are too realistic and bloody. In addition, the psychological aspect of the characters plays a very important role in the development of the plot in which the roles of hunter and prey are reversed several times; and the soundtrack is dramatic enough. Personally, I feel that there are scenes that are too gory for my liking, but the dilemma that arises when seeing a man become a monster to hunt another is interesting. It reminds me of a sentence that I recently read in which that "if you kill a murderer, the number of murderers does not decrease". Interesting, right? Finally, I recognize that the photography is very well executed and that the interpretation of Choi Min-sik (actor who starred in the acclaimed Oldboy) as Kyung-chul is on a par with the great psychopaths in film history, do any of you have you seen this movie? I read you in the comments.

  3. I Saw the Devil (2010): South Koreans' way of cinema@evaredskin1594d

After Valentine's Day passed, we returned to all-weather movies with a little surprise from South Korea. Before I continue, I must warn: This post is not suitable for children!

    εικόνα.png source

South Korean cinema is known for bloody, gruesome films, depicting the worst face of humanity. Old Boy, The Wailing, Memories of Murder are some of the most distinctive films of this genre. And this movie has all the elements to be called, if not equal, but a hidden gem, which the audience and the critics loved from the first moment.

The plot begins when the body of a young woman is found, killed by a serial killer. Her fiance, Kim Soo-hyun, an agent in National Intelligence Service is seeking revenge, driven by an abysmal hatred for the killer. He has decided not to arrest him, but to torture the serial killer, like he does with his victims. Kim Soo-hyun intervenes every time the serial killer is attempting to assault and exterminate his victim, beating him ruthlessly. Kim Soo-hyun, even shoves a transmitter in the throat of serial killer, in order to watches his next moves.

    εικόνα.png source

These two protagonists, or antagonists as we may say, are the main core through out the whole film. On one side the insane serial killer whο enjoys torturing his victims in the most gruesome way, and other side the devoted man of the law, the agent in N.I.S., who in his pursuit of revenge surpasses the immorality and indifference of human pain.

The story talks about revenge, a revenge that is that goes beyond the moral and the legitimate, that makes even the cruelest ask themselves who is the perpetrator and who is the victim.

    εικόνα.png source

The performances by the two leads are riveting. They are no strangers to the movie-going public anyway, as the serial killer is played by actor Choi Min-sik, known to us from Old Boy, while the agent is played by Lee Byung-hun, last seen in Squid Game. They almost don't need others to accompany them as the relationship they create between them is so intense that they fill the whole film.

"I saw the devil" is a movie that requires audience with a strong stomach and to be extra tolerant on violent scenes. The innovative ways that the agent uses to torture the serial killer are shocking. Even I, that I have watched a lot of korean hard core action thrillers, was shocked in some of scenes.

Spaltter lovers, you will love this film! But after all the gruesome plot and the bloody scenes, one question remains: "Who was the Devil in the end?" And the answer is : any human could become the devil, given the chance.

    Thank you for reading!

    English Version.

When we watch a movie and we are afraid of the unusual, seeing horrifying monsters that force us to cover our eyes, we are in front of a horror film. Within this genre is circumscribed the South Korean production I Found the Devil (2010), and needless to say, it meets all the above characteristics.

Darkness is that side where our inner devil dwells which is awakened by the desire for revenge.

In this film, the predator and serial killer who rapes and dismembers his victims with impunity, becomes prey when the fiancé of one of them, (a Korean Intelligence Service Agent), takes justice into his own hands and initiates a cat and mouse game.

[Source](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588170/mediaviewer/rm2722013185/) The main actors present a memorable interpretative duel, transmitting unpredictable sensations, (savagery, rawness, brutality), from which the viewer at no time is disengaged until an ending that dislocates. They are self-destructive characters who end up offering an acting recital. We see a hellish underworld where the killer perpetrates his atrocities, in which the director portrays violence in an excellent way. Hero and villain at times merge into a single face, within a great story of revenge.

The protagonist couple can be defined as Yin and Yan, they are the perfect complement. There are no concessions or sentimentality, what the Agent seeks is to inflict the greatest possible pain regardless of the means to achieve it or the consequences of such punishment. The film takes influences from titles such as "Seven" or "Zodiac" and "Saw", complemented with generous doses of blood and creativity in the bloody procedure of the criminal.

Kyung Chul, is a single father, with a stable job and his own house, but for him the human race means nothing, except for women who become a macabre fun. This character transpires pure evil. He is played by actor Choi Min-sik (star of the also excellent Oldboy), with a terrifying look, which produces antipathy.

    [Source](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1588170/mediaviewer/rm917865473/)
Kim Soo-hyeon, is the NIS (Korean Intelligence Service) agent, always on the lookout for his girlfriend. He is played by actor Lee Byung-hun, (currently playing the role of Frontman in the hit series The Squid Game), somewhat expressionless but with his eyes conveys coldness, sadness and despair.

    imagen.png Fuente

When these two elements face to face, we realize that evil ends up begetting evil noting this in the last scene in which it is reflected that these two extremes are almost equal, we can say that we are facing the two faces of the devil.

Here we see flawless direction aided by an excellent script (by Hoon-jung Park), and spectacular performances. The film is of a fast pace, with camera movements in some scenes, with sharp cuts and shots that magnify the same, and a surprising three hundred and sixty degree tracking shot inside a moving vehicle. The soundtrack features classical music, piano and Spanish guitar.

I saw this film a few years ago with my wife and although she is not very enthusiastic about the genre she was trapped by the story told and in many scenes she covered her eyes, for my part I was stunned by the evil of the serial killer, and how before our eyes the other protagonist even surpasses the serial killer in levels of evil and degradation.

It really seems to me more horrifying than a vampire, werewolf or evil spirits movie, since in this case the monster is the human himself.

For me, an instant cult film, a must-see that has been enjoyed by everyone to whom I have recommended it.

Thank you very much for visiting this publication, I hope to have shared with you an entertaining time and to have encouraged you to get to know this excellent cult film.

Korean films tend to distance themselves strongly from their strong television drama culture; they boast an artistic nature that is otherwise unexpected -- creators are not afraid of creating something unique, although such films may often contain slight elements that reflect the dramatic nature of Korea's entertainment media.

I Saw the Devil is a story of revenge, and how it may feel absolutely beautiful giving a psychotic killer that murdered your wife a constant fear of being caught and set free over and over like a killer whale toying with a seal, it may result in some collateral damage.

The film is a visual game of cat and mouse, as we see our protagonist take matters into his own hands once a series of murders in the area become a personal matter. Our protagonist wants nothing more than to inject pure fear into his victim, to give him the assumption that he has a chance to get away; although after the killer discovers how exactly he is able to be caught time and time again, he takes things to an even higher personal level: going after his family.

This is a story of the positives and negatives of revenge: how wounds caused may never fully heal in time, regardless of the actions one may take to suppress those emotions. Revenge is simply a single droplet falling into a puddle, rippling further and further into the lives of others. There are no true winners. I love I Saw the Devil due to its ability to show that the devil is in all of us; in a way, even our killer that treated others in nonredeemable ways saw the devil outside of himself.

I'm not much of a fan of the action genre, but knowing that there is a bigger, bittersweet meaning behind the scenes that do contain crazy amounts of action is great. It's nice to see a film that provides reason behind character actions; those scenes ensure that they aren't just a bit of fast-paced fun, but telling us more of the characters and the film's narrative. It reminds us of the fragility of the human mind and how emotions can take control of us; how emotions can take us down unspeakable roads in life.
