  1. 1001 Movies #5: Intolerance (1916)@robmolecule2588d

I'm watching the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die in chronological order:

    https://www.listchallenges.com/1001-movies-you-must-see-before-you-die-all

This is epic, grand, groundbreaking, and yet incredibly boring and tedious to get through. At nearly three hours long, it tells four stories at once, cutting back and forth throughout the film. Each takes place in a different time period. The vast sets for battle scenes are certainly an amazing feat, but not really fun to watch.

I'm trying to like silent films, but not all are working out for me.

I feel like any of these stories could have been better to watch alone. But then, the story of Jesus is not given much screen time. The historical stories of war are just not enjoyable to follow at all. The only story I really liked was the then contemporary story about the man accused of murder after being unemployed after a strikebreak amid a push for alcohol prohibition. The characters were front and center. I would much rather have just watched these scenes.

Anyway, I'm 0 for 2 on D.W. Griffith films, with him directing this and Birth of a Nation. I think there are couple more on the list.

This article at least acknowledges it's a difficult watch:
