  1. Film Review: Kate & Leopold (2001)@drax985d

    (source: tmdb.org)

Tragic events of 9/11 have affected content of many Hollywood films set in New York City, especially those featuring city’s famous landmark, now in ruins. Thankfully, other landmarks remained and its use in films, even those released shortly after the tragedy, wasn’t that traumatic for audience. One of those landmarks plays prominent role in the plot of Kate & Leopold, 2001 science fiction romantic comedy directed by James Mangold.

The plot begins 1876, during ceremony marking construction of the first tower of what would later become Brooklyn Bridge. One of the people attending it is Leopold Mountbatten, 3rd Duke of Albany (played by Hugh Jackman), British aristocrat and amateur inventor. One of the reasons why he came to America is to find rich American heiress that could provide money to his noble but now impoverished family. At the same evening he discovers strange man (played by Liev Schreiber) who rummages through his things and that leads to chase which would end with both men falling from the bridge. Much to Leopold’s surprise, both he and the stranger find themselves in 2001. Stranger, who introduces himself as Stuart, explains that he is physicist who discovered time portals and uses them to research past. The portal is reopen in a week and, in the meantime, Stuart decides to host Leopold in his apartment and thus protect him from trouble that might arise over his unfamiliarity with modern world. Stuart, however, ends in hospital and Leopold instead finds his Stuart former girlfriend Kate McCkay (played by Meg Ryan), a modern free-spirited woman who earns her living as marketing expert. Kate never had much luck with men and she wants nothing to do with them, but mysterious stranger with British accent and old-fashioned manners would spark her romantic interests.

Time travel and culture clash between people of two different eras as basis for romantic comedy actually isn’t original idea. Two decades earlier it was used, much more successfully, in Nicholas Meyer’s Time After Time. This film, however, was in development for years and Sandra Bullock, one of the queens of Hollywood romantic comedies, was among stars interested in project. Director James Mangold, while making the film, had to face various problems in script co-written with Steven Rogers, mostly those with excessive length and some plot elements that certain oversensitive viewers might find unacceptable. Some of those problems were solved, but not those created by casting of Meg Ryan. Former rival of Sandra Bullock for the romantic comedy throne didn’t seem to age very gracefully at the start of 21st Century and also lacked proper chemistry with her partner. Already burdened with some issues related to her private life, Ryan further alienated audience by abandoning “girl next door” innocence of her previous roles for the sake of new quasi-feminist image of Strong Independent Woman which many would find annoying. Hugh Jackman is, on the other hand, much more believable in the role of man whose charm is able to make women abandon modernity for the sake of antiquated values. Jackman and couple of well-made scenes make Kate & Leopold watchable, but the general impression is fatally affected by too much sentimentality, lack of humour, plot holes and scriptwriters’ apparent lack of knowledge of certain historic facts. Because of that, this film represents a missed opportunity.
