  1. Katla (saison 1)@florenceboens1769d

katla s1 Guðrún Ýr Eyfjörð as Grima.jpg Gudrun Yr Eyfjörd alias Grima Thorsdottir (fille de Thor)

katla Ingvar-Sigurdsson as thor.jpg Ingvar Sigurdsson alias Thor

    Florence

  2. Katla review - a new Netflix original series (I didn't like it)@unbiasedwriter1800d

Katla is a brand new Netflix original series. It was produced in Iceland and it was directed by Baltasar Kormakur, a guy that I learned about through watching other Icelandic productions and some Hollywood productions. I have recently watched several TV series and shows from Iceland, including Trapped and The Valhalla Murders, and that is why I decided to give Katla a chance as well. It could have been great, but somehow, I felt like it ended with a tragedy and it gave me a feeling that I have wasted 8x45 minutes of my life.

    katla2.jpg

What is Katla all about (minor spoilers)?

This is a really strange story. The volcano Katla is erupting and spreading ashes on the city of Vik. As a result, most people leave the city, but a few people remain behind, meaning that there is a hotel active in the city, there is a hospital, some farmers, and a police officer.

It all starts to get interesting when a person suddenly shows up, soaked up in ashes, and freezing cold. Nobody has a clue about the identity of the person, but when the person starts to speak, she speaks Swedish and claims to be Gunhild. When we then realize that there is another Gunhild as well, twenty years older, but they have the exact same memories, it starts to get interesting.

With time, other people also show up in a similar way, and that is the foundation of the story.

    katla.jpg

    What makes this stupid...

If someone shows up knowing so much, looking completely similar... it would be a world story. But, in the city/village of Vik, nobody seems to care, nobody is calling the press... and the local police officer is just annoyingly stupid. There are so many annoying aspects to the story.

And then comes the plus... big time spoiler, don't read if you want to watch it... Just like I hated Behind Her Eyes for suddenly going "supernatural", I disliked it that there was no logical reason (according to my sense of logic) to what happened, and it annoyed me.

But, it might be interesting to some, but to be honest, I almost regret watching this. There are so many movies and TV series I would have watched instead, especially considering how the story came to an end!

Have you seen it? I would love to hear your thoughts! Are you as critical as me, or did you actually like it? I am really curious to hear from you!

  3. (ESP-ENG) Katla, el nuevo misterio nórdico de Netflix // Katla, Netflix's new Nordic mystery.@javyeslava.photo1827d

    **

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

    **

Hi friends, good vibes to all.

    Poster!

A few days ago looking for new things to watch I came across this new series on Netflix of Nordic origin, more specifically from Iceland, which apparently was a story full of suspense and mystery and as the truth is that I'm a bit of a fan of those genres I decided to take a look and see what it's really about.

It had been a long time since I had seen something on Netflix that really caught my attention and I liked it as much as this series did, to the point that I watched it in just two days. Of course the series is short, it consists of 8 chapters with a duration of between 45-50 minutes each, but the main reason was the way in which from the first moments it begins to generate a very big curiosity. Let's see then what this disturbing story is about.

    - Sinopsis // Synopsis.

    Katla!

The first thing we should know is that Katla is a volcano located in Iceland but it is also the pillar of this story that is responsible for showing us the fear in a totally new way because it is based on what we can not see, that is, in uncertainty. Clearly, and if you have seen it, you will realize the great similarities with "DARK", they are not the same but at the level of aesthetics and terror there are certain similarities.

As I said, Katla has 8 episodes where little by little and in a slow way for some, it takes us to the search for all the answers necessary for the resolution of the great mystery on which the story is based. The thing is that this slowness makes the experience more chilling and therefore keeps us in suspense.

    Scene!

The thing is that Katla, the volcano, erupts and what apparently seemed like a natural and common phenomenon ends up becoming a somewhat strange nightmare. And it is strange because the community of the small town of Vik will begin to witness great mysteries that the ice itself will unveil.

A town in which there are not many people left because of the same eruption many of its inhabitants have decided to leave leaving only a group of no more than 20 people. The other thing to mention is that Katla has been an active volcano for more than a year so the terror and suspense seems to be a never ending thing.

    - Opinion.

What I liked most about this series is the combination of three genres: suspense, horror and science fiction. On many occasions when these three "forces" come together the result is usually not so good, fortunately this is not the case with this story because this union takes us on a journey where we are able to experience different types of fear.

Because if the eruption of a volcano is a natural event but something else happens there, something sinister that ends up turning everything into something supernatural. Or not. That's the magic of this series and that's why it's a bit like "Dark", because in the end everything can be interpreted according to each person's way of seeing things.

The series is a gem as far as setting is concerned, filmed in the landscapes of Iceland gives it a gloomy touch plus the use of grays and darks make the story come to life and really grab you. I think the most important part of Katla's success is undoubtedly the fear of the unknown, of not knowing what is happening or what is going to happen and above all the lack of answers. The human mind is always going to seek reason above all things but in Vik's town that won't be possible.

    Grima!

In conclusion it is a very, very good series that surprised me a lot, I think it will be one of the great productions of this 2021, it is one of those series that promise as long as they continue it with more seasons. And if they don't, it is also worth it, I assure you that your time will not be wasted. There is suspense, terror, intrigue, uncertainty and mystery in excess, good locations and photographs and the casting despite not knowing anyone the truth is that they are first class actors. A solid 4.5/5, according to my criteria. As always I leave you with the trailer so you can see what it's all about:

    ***

Well my people that's all for today, I hope you liked it. ¡Hugs to all, see you next time!

  4. Series review: Baltasar Kormákur's Katla@drunksamurai1829d

Iceland, a country of volcanoes known for its rugged northern beauty, black sand beaches, rich folklore and Viking sagas was a "dark horse" in terms of TV series and movies for me, so I was happy to take on the new series "Katla" from Netflix and the popular local director Baltasar Kormákur, known for the drama "Everest".

The trailer was intriguing, stylishly dark and in some places reminiscent of the work of David Lynch, who is partial to all sorts of devilry.

    katla-netflix.jpg source

The inhabitants of the small town of Vik, in the south of Iceland, are forced to leave their homes due to the eruption of the volcano Katla. For a year, ash has been flying from the volcano, the town is deserted and the only people left are a policeman with his terminally ill wife, a mechanic and his daughter, a meteorologist, several scientists, hospital staff and an elderly hotel owner.

The scientists painstakingly collect data and monitor the situation. A policeman makes regular rounds to catch tourists willing to do anything for cool selfies, but one day a strange woman, covered head-to-toe in clay and ash, comes to town from the volcano, and life in the town begins to change rapidly, and its inhabitants begin to stir up the past and reveal their secrets.

I have to say at once that the series is impressive. As befits a Scandinavian noir, it is unhurried, contemplative, rich in beautiful views and slowly building up the atmosphere, which, like a volcano, explodes with the last couple of heartbreaking episodes. And, believe me, the story couldn't have worked any other way.

Paying maximum attention to each of the characters the show slowly moves through genres, carefully stringing on the storyline heavy drama, mystical horror in the style of "Pet Cemetary" by Stephen King, makes a couple of reverences to the folk mysticism and after the 4th episode takes a course for the cult fantasy novel by Stanislaw Lem "Solaris". Associations with the latter are brilliantly complemented by the idea of the power of nature and the forces that are beyond the control of man, who, no matter how hard he tries, is still weak and under any circumstances remains a hostage to his desires.

    Mysterious-woman-covered-in-ash..jpg source

It makes you think, and if in the first episodes the grimy doppelgangers seem mysterious, by the end credits one has only to look silently at the screen and reconsider what we have seen from a new point of view. It took me two evenings to watch all the episodes and another dozen episodes of Gravity Falls to get rid of the viscous and not the most pleasant aftertaste of this Scandinavian heir to Twin Peaks, focusing not on a mystical detective, but on the innermost - dreams, desires, fears and, guilt.

    7 out of 10

By the way, as an avid movie geek, I can't help but notice another parallel with "Solaris". The role of a local hotel owner, who never lets go of a deck of tarot cards, starred Guðrún Gísladóttir, the actress who played in the last film by Tarkovsky, who adapted "Solaris" novel in 1972.
