Main names associated with the film

This one is a strange film, it reminded me of the Calls series from the Apple TV+ streaming service because almost all the conversations we are going to see in this movie are just Tom Hardy's character on the phone, trying to fix a lot of problems in his life. The only actor/actress we see in the film is just Tom Hardy. All the others only participate through the phone, but don't let this discourage you from watching this film, I think it has been proved time and time again that minimalistic productions can sometimes achieve great results.

Besides Tom Hardy, the only remaining name to mention would be director/writer, Steven Knight. I didn't know much about this guy but since I enjoyed the film I wanted to know more about his career and it turns out the majority of his works have been as a writer, not as a director. And I was surprised to see him work as a writer in some awesome series such as Taboo, Peaky Blinders, and See, all of them are great shows. When it comes to movies, his main works as a writer have been with Eastern Promises and The Girl in the Spider's Web the 2018 version, which isn't my favorite but still a nice film.

So Steven Knight is actually a great writer who is just starting to try the director role. In the case of this film, Locke, the direction was very simple because the story takes place inside a car with only 1 person. The main attraction is how he manages so many issues that are happening at the same time.

    What was the movie about?

Tom Hardy plays a character who works as a construction manager. He has his own family and seems like a very responsible person. The next day he will have one of the most important nights of his career because they are going to receive a lot of concrete for the construction of a huge building. It is mentioned several times during the film the amount of concrete is record-setting due to how big it is. This makes it very clear the enormous importance of doing a good job when the trucks arrive with the concrete.

The only problem is that Tom Hardy's character, Ivan Locke, suddenly learns about something important to him that is about to happen in another city, and due to his personal past, he decides he needs to attend no matter what. He had a family commitment that night, and a huge day at work the next morning but something just clicks in his mind and puts everything at risk to attend his responsibilities in this other city.

Since his sudden absence seems to have no explication to people near him (family and coworkers), he will have to manage a lot of issues with a series of phone calls while he drives during the night. A movie where everything happening is just phone calls might sound boring to some but this isn't the case. As I mentioned some paragraphs above, this isn't the first production I have seen where the plot is just one phone call after another one. The intensity of these phone calls gets better and better, and I have to say Steven Knight did a great job writing this story.

Ivan Locke will have to talk to his family, to his coworkers, to the person waiting for him in this other city. He will have to manage the biggest moment of his career through phone calls, he will have to maneuver the bureaucracy in order to allow the trucks with the concrete to reach the construction site while he is rushing on the highway to get to the other city in time.

There will be a lot of fights over the phone with several people, but the reason for his decision is properly explained throughout the film. As a viewer, one can think there are simply too many things happening at the same time, and this might seem a bit exaggerating, but that's how intensity is achieved. By putting the character in a stressful situation and navigating those troubling circumstances.

    How was the performance?

Tom Hardy was awesome as it is usually the case. There are some emotional moments during the calls and he portrays the corresponding emotional state perfectly. There are also other moments that cannot be described without giving spoilers, but what I can say is that Hardy was excellent during the entire film.

    Final thoughts

This can be considered a weird film, there is only 1 actor and all conversations are through the phone. This is just the story of the night when his life completely changed. If you enjoy psychological thrillers, you should give this film a watch. This isn't a crime film, it is a drama couple with a thriller. I would have preferred a less ambiguous ending though.

Locke is a movie starring Tom Hardy and… well that’s it. There are a variety of voice actors that play people he speaks to on the phone but this is a movie about a fellow named Locke and he is completely the only person on screen for the length of the movie. It is also a movie that stays with you for a very long time after you see it because Tom Hardy’s performance is so deeply affecting that you can’t easily forget it. This is very important when you consider that this is considered a “small” story by Hollywood stories, Locke leaves work, makes a fateful decision, turning right instead of left because he needs to do something and the implications run deep into every aspect of his life: home, work, everything.

And it all takes place in conversations between him and others on the car phone as he drives. And it is compelling, thoughtful, brilliantly crafted, and suspenseful; I could not tear my eyes away from it. Tom Hardy does so much with just his eyes as he tries to keep his world together. I don’t know what else to say about it, I don’t want to spoil the story, it is just really good.

The film was, I’m told, was shot in single takes, twice per night while Hardy was driving the car or being towed, the calls live with the other actors, on the phone, calling him from a hotel room and performing out their scenes. Just go watch it. It’s a great film.

  3. Locke (Film): Review.@martinmcfly2766d

For a couple of years I've been hearing about Locke, and it's not because they recommended it to me too many times, or anything like that, but I did hear at least a couple of times that it was an original and different movie, with a brilliant interpretation by Tom Hardy, so today I finally decided to give it a try, and I liked it.

    ---

Year: 2013 Category: Drama. Director: Steven Knight. Cast: Tom Hardy, Olivia Colman, Ruth Wilson, Andrew Scott, Ben Daniels, Tom Holland, Bill Milner.

    Plot

Tom Hardy is Ivan Locke, a man who with effort and work built a good life. He is a good husband, an excellent father, a great worker, and is known for his honesty and professionalism, but one night all of that is put in danger when he decides to do what is right.

    Opinion

This is one of those movies in which if you read the reviews and recommendations before you can see it, you will see that there is no consensus, some will tell you that it is one of the best movies they have seen in years, and others will say that it was a trash. In such a way that you will only know the truth once you see it. Personally I am satisfied with the film, although I know that it is not the type of film that everyone likes.

I must leave something clear, the person who recommended the film told me that most of the plot takes place in a car, not that the whole movie takes place there, which is what happened. Still I liked it, although not knowing if at some point the plot would go somewhere else that was not the car, and that allowed me to speculate a bit with the end, so I could not predict it at all, however, during the film the viewer can easily predict that the film will unfold completely on a single stage.

About the performances, well, really there is only one, I have no idea because the cast is so wide, unless reading dialogues and recording them is counted as acting. Tom Hardy does an excellent job, the whole film falls on his shoulders, like his character, he has a great weight to take on. Without the fabulous performance of Hardy this movie would be probably very bad, since it was necessary an actor with whom the viewer could empathize, and Tom Hardy does his job so well that he allows the viewer to immerse himself in the story.

Just before watching the movie, a couple of hours before, I was talking to a friend about the fact that I got the documentary Hitler's Hollywood, which is intended to show how during the Nazi regime, in Germany, Joseph Goebbels directed the cinema and subordinated it to the service of the political interests of the Third Reich. Then, during the conversation with my friend, I asked myself, what should be the purpose of a movie?

I came to the conclusion that a film should have two main objectives, to entertain and generate reflection in the viewer. But it should not be a vague reflection, but the whole work should invite reflection, I told my friend that if the characters were bad people, the final reflection would not make sense, the writers usually corrupt the characters to make them "more interesting", that is, they make them be alcoholics, or addicted to drugs or anything else, and then they make the character walk a path in which they show that despite their faults they are a good person, and that they can do acts nobles, however, I think that the reflection should be generated from the character's personality, and that it could create complexity and deep characters without corrupting his personality.

So I told my friend that a good movie did not need special effects, not a big budget, just needed to have a good script, one that is thoughtful, well interpreted characters, and a good address. And friends, that's what I got when I saw Locke two hours later.

Personally I liked the movie, mainly because it meets these requirements, has an original and thoughtful script, has a good performance, and is well directed.

The film shows us how a man's life collapses because he made only one mistake in his life, but he does not collapse because he made that mistake, he collapses because he decides to take responsibility for his actions, and decides to face the consequences of his actions. The subject is an idealist, duty is his motivator, he is the antithesis of the other characters we usually see in the movies. He does not get what he wants, he does not deceive others to achieve his goals, he does not act for his own benefit, he is the opposite, he is responsible for his actions. All this is a reflection that I consider necessary, especially for current generations, who have lost all sense of responsibility and duty. That's why I recommend it.

    Score

    8/10

The score is a bit arbitrary, maybe I should put a 7, but I already made the decision to leave the 8, so I'll leave it, after all I'm not sure if nobody is going to read this anyway, so at least I'm going to please myself. I recommend it.

  5. 'Locke' by Steven Knight Review: An interesting and rather unique film@namiks3087d

    Locke.jpg

Locke follows a man's car ride on the way to London to be there at the time of his soon-to-be child's birth. It's a very simplistic narrative, and incredibly easy to describe without spoiling anything major; although there are no massive twists, and there is really only one actor present in the entire film: Tom hardy.

    **

There will be spoilers from here on.

    **

Locke displays more than a man's car ride on the way to a child's birth, however, and it's a narrative that is extremely well-executed. The viewer quite literally watches a man breakdown within the span of 85 minutes as we discover the truth behind this child's birth, and his not-so-faithful ways. We see a man choose to finally do the right thing, and come to terms with his actions; he's been unfaithful, and that has resulted in a child with another woman, but he's proving to himself that he is going to be there for the child. It's a nice touch to a negative outcome, given his father was never there for him, and he's not going to follow his footsteps.

He's refusing to run from his mistakes, and finally tells his wife that he has quite literally fucked up, but wants to do what he feels is best for him, this woman that is now having his child, and the child. Given Tom Hardy is the only actor to be visibly present in the film, its narrative is unravelled through a series of phone calls as he drives. We see him relatively calm and collected, and slowly break under the stress as he questions his past, and his future.

Amidst the family issue, he's handling the miscalculations of his colleagues in construction; a large amount of cement is to be poured following day. He has to supervise the pouring to ensure it is successful, this results in thirty-six total phone calls throughout the drive with his boss and colleagues.

Tom Hardy's performance is excellent. Throughout the various phone calls, he's having pretend conversations with his father, who he imagines is sitting the backseat. He despises his father, and is constantly telling himself that he will do everything he can to be there for the child and mother, no matter how much he wants to run from them. It's such a simple film, and is yet another one of production studio A24's accolades as a truly unique narrative and direction in filmmaking.
