Nice Sunday Hivers, today we have dawned here with rain and the truth is that the atmosphere is nice because the previous days has been terrible with the heat. In my city we are used to the sun, but the truth is that this season has been quite strong, so to enjoy this side the sound of the rain and the refreshing of the breeze.

As always and I want to make it a total habit because it is good for our mental health to have some time for ourselves and do something that entertains us, I come to tell you about my experience and views of this plot I saw last night.

I have chosen it within the section of real facts, because I feel that most of the times these are the ones I like the most and they leave me an important life lesson about what was shown.

As mentioned in the introduction of the film, this is a true fact of several cases of disappearance of very young girls who did not return home alive.

To this day the guilty has not been found, or rather there was no conclusive evidence to blame someone and make them pay for the murders. So in my opinion it is a good way to remind the murderer (if he is alive) of the misdeed he did and of course to make the victims' families see that they have not forgotten.

There's not a lot of beating around the bush in terms of the beginning of this plot, it all starts with a phone call before someone disappeared. But let's not leave aside that strangely, and I say it this way because it happens to me lately with all the plots, there is a fairly pronounced family dysfunction, and I think that the same is what leads some young people to take the wrong path.

In this film it's made clear how incompetent the police and those in charge of looking for missing persons can be, but also some of the reasons why they are always looking to handle things outside of the media. It's like a way of saving face to get something else, in this case it's not to further sully the name of an investigator who has been accused of mishandling his equipment.

One of the things that made me quite impotent as well as the mother of this missing young woman, is how unfair this police system can be to dismiss something since for them it is not important, speaking in a more direct sense, the fact that this young woman was engaged in a certain sexual activity does not take away her right to be safe, much less detract from the importance of attending to her case.

I think the strongest thing about this is the fact that they have connected this disappearance case with the chance finding of several bodies buried in the vicinity of the beach. The way they find these bodies is far-fetched because it was not expected, but the point is that if it had not been by chance those bodies would still be buried there and the murderer as if nothing had happened.

For an already dysfunctional family to have to go through this hard time must be quite agonizing, taking into account that the media can be quite crude when it comes to reporting the progress of the investigation.

But undoubtedly leaving everything to the police had never been an option for this mother who I really applaud her fortitude, and the actress who plays her really was perfect because it was a very natural performance.

When you have a life or death emergency what you expect is the promptness of the police in this particular case, especially since the call had been made from a private area that apparently has certain privileges.

This in itself is something that made me question many things, taking for granted that the culprit was one of the residents there.

It so happens that the client of the missing girl resides there, in addition to the fact that her doctor who is in charge of the security of the place also has his residence in that sector.

All this is something that turns into confusion and reaches a point where you want to kill certain people who do not seem to care about the situation and even worse, it is as if they were making fun of the missing girl.

Hopes were on the table for this family when they found out that none of the bodies found was the missing girl, however, the lack of vocation towards the case makes them lose time and of course the person responsible for her disappearance has the opportunity to escape.

The girl's mother receives a call from a neighbor of the possible suspect and he helps her with certain hypotheses that in the end lead to part of the truth of her tragic story.

The incompetence or the interest of the police agencies in the truth of the events is something that happens in reality. If it had not been for this mother's determination to find her daughter at all costs, she would never have found her. I do not believe that there was a second chance and much less when they separated the case of the bodies found with her disappearance even though there were elements that connected them perfectly.

The ending made me think that these things were not carried out by a single person, and that it was rather several men who took advantage of the situation and the place to do what they did.

It is truly tragic to lose a child under such circumstances and even more so when you are never told what really happened and at whose hands.

While there was no one to blame, the police themselves bear the brunt of the blame given that they took an hour in an attempt to help a desperate young woman screaming for her life and who was excluded for being a prostitute.

  2. Lost Girls - The story of unsolved real-life murders in a little town.@dedicatedguy2286d

    image.png

A few days ago Netflix released this real-life drama/crime/mystery movie and since it seemed interesting I decided to give it a watch. The crimes happened in a small town, a girl suddenly disappears and when searching for her the police discover several bodies of other girls.

They were sex workers that offered their services online and the possible serial killer must have figured out this type of situation provides plenty of opportunities for him to commit his crimes. After watching the movie, I think one or more members of the local police might have been involved. I say this because the police didn't attend the emergency call of the last victim on time, and in one part of the movie, a group of mothers goes to a gated community to see how long it takes for the police to arrive, and they end up arriving in less than 15 minutes. But when the last victim was calling they lasted around an hour.

This movie really paints the police as an organization that employs mediocre, liars, incompetent and potential criminals. It must have been really frustrating to have all these people as the ones in charge of solving these crimes.

    image.png

There were more than 10 victims in total, and since the real murdered is unlikely to ever get caught, it is really suspicious how something like this could have happened without some type of help from a policeman, or perhaps, these were all crimes committed by members of the police forces.

In the Wikipedia page about this murder nicknames as Long Island serial killer, it says that one of the suspects "was reported to have blocked an FBI probe of the LISK case during his time as police chief." Why would he do something like that?

The movie is good but it is far from a must-watch. There was nothing special about the acting, it was simply "all right" and acceptable, it is not a bad film but I am sure finding a better one shouldn't be hard. Especially because the crime/mystery genre has a lot of great choices.

If you are interested in knowing more about this story, or if you enjoy learning about real-life crimes then you will probably enjoy this flick. Although I do believe this type of information is better when shared through a well-planned documentary. Some examples of great real-life crime documentaries produced by Netflix that I have watched and enjoyed are Don't F**k With Cats: Hunting an Internet Killer, Making a Murderer, and Evil Genius

    image.png

    The best

    • This good movie allows the viewers to learn about this real-life case that remains unsolved.
    • It will certainly encourage the viewers to search for more information about these horrible crimes.

    The worst

    • There are much better crime/mystery movies out there.
    • The performances were acceptable but not really great.

  3. Lost Girls on Netflix (contains spoilers)@netflixr2294d

Not to be confused with the iconic 80's film Lost Boys, this 2020 released on Netflix is based on real event and that makes it more interesting that just any other police-oriented drama mystery film.

**There are spoilers in this write-up because the story itself is based on a very well-known event in real life**

I regret to say that despite fantastic acting and a story that is based on real life, the film still kind of falls flat due to what I believe to be a lack of story necessary to fill up 1.5 hours.

    lost-girls-1-z.jpg

Other than Gabriel Byrne, who plays a relatively minor role, the cast is filled with actors and actresses I am largely unfamiliar with, and this is a strong point in my perspective. The story follows the true events surrounding Mari Gilbert and how she had to relentlessly pursue the New York police force to find her missing daughter. These events are tied to the Long Island Serial Killer, who to this day remains an unknown person.

    ![screen-shot-2020-03-13-at-122543-1024x522.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmZgjrotvHpvWBm6ccvq6rm5h69ncsYooWhbEGRBJQgVsv/screen-shot-2020-03-13-at-122543-1024x522.png)

Amy Ryan plays Mari Gilbert, a single mother with modest means who works as a waitress while simultaneously raising several daughters. One of her daughters no longer lives with her and after not turning up for a planned family dinner at mom's place, ends up completely disappearing. What unfolds is a vast conspiracy of the police not being overly concerned about her daughter's disappearance due to the fact that the daughter is a known sex worker.

Whether or not Mari was aware of her daughter's profession is not clearly spelled out in the film, but her crusade to force the police to do their jobs is actually a very true occurrence, and it is very conceivable that if not for Mari's intervention, the discovery of the bodies (which included her daughter) might not have happened.

The emotion shown on screen, particular on the part of Amy Ryan, is very nicely done and I ended up looking her up as a consequence. Turns out she has been nominated for an Academy Award in the past but I am not sure in what capacity.

Despite containing fantastic acting and an excellent cast, Lost Girls falls a little bit flat because I feel as though this is one of those films that they probably had to work a bit in order to stretch it out over 90 minutes. Whenever a film is almost exactly 90 minutes long, I tend to suspect that they were working towards this pre-defined length, rather than actually having that much material.

It kind of shows as the scenes drag on and on to the point where if you are like me, your phone gets involved as you try to kill the boredom with other things while it is on. Therefore, it is understandable why this film went directly to Netflix, which given the current state of lock-down the world is in, was probably a wonderful mistake.

I can't really recommend watching this film as the ending is probably already known to people familiar with the Long Island Serial Killer, and the long stretches of nothing happening.
