Hello friends, today I'm back with full energy after having returned from a trip, a trip during which I had the opportunity to see some films that certainly deserve a space in this community, so I want to start with the first of them and it is "Mery Poppins Return" a film that I had wanted to see since it was released in 2018, but for some reason I could not do it then, so I invite you to take your bag, your magic umbrella and join me in this cinematic adventure.

    Overview/Resumen

Siblings Michael and Jane Banks, who are overwhelmed because Michael's house is about to be repossessed, are suddenly surprised by the return of their old magical nanny, Mery Poppins, who arrives at the most appropriate moment to take care of Michael's children, but also to teach him and the rest of the adults, that despite the problems and situations that come with maturity, one should never lose innocence, nor hope, nor the capacity to dream that children have, because sometimes the solution to our problems is very simple, it is in front of our eyes and we don't see it because we let ourselves be carried away by desperation.

    My Opinion/Mi Opinión

First of all I think I have to admit that I don't like musicals too much, I don't usually get obsessed with them or learn the songs by heart, however there is one or two that I really enjoy and Mery Poppins was always one of them along with "The Sound of Music" (which itself was set in 1910) so what can I say, I am more than satisfied in every way with this film, First of all because although it is a sequel made nowadays, it preserves completely not only the aesthetics but also the essence of the film made in the 60's, that is to say, they didn't try to "modernize" or "improve" it so to speak, you can see that they took care of the details to keep the soul of its predecessor.

Another thing I loved about the film, and it also has to do with the fact that they didn't try to "modernise" it, is that in the scenes where Mery and the children enter the animated world of the porcelain tureen, this sequence also has 2D animation, and this is something I am very grateful for, as it appeals to nostalgia and the dream of every child to enter a cartoon, and I think that this effect would have been difficult to achieve if the animation had been 3D.

I loved the scene where Mary and Jack sing on stage, it was fantastic on an artistic level, you almost don't notice the difference between the animated characters and the real ones, also the song is great, one of my favourites in the film, as for Emily Blunt's performance in this scene, there is a part that reminded me a lot of Liza Minnelli, maybe because of the short hair, it definitely makes us feel like we are on Broadway.

Another of my favourite songs is "Turning Turtle" performed by Meryl Streep. I must admit that at first I didn't recognise her until after a while, this woman is superb, I really loved her performance, her voice, her ability to play any character. On the other hand, the song is dynamic, fresh, funny and the best of all is that it refers to the fact that you just have to look at your life from a different perspective and that way you will find the solution to your problems.

But my favourite song of all is "Trip a Little Light Fantastic" performed by Jack, the lamplighter, Wow! The cinematography is beautiful, the choreography is second to none, the set design, everything, EVERYTHING was magnificent in this sequence, at times I was reminded of "Singing in the Rain" but my favourite part is when the other lamplighters join in with Jack's performance.

One of the most important aspects in all films is the story, and it's something I really enjoyed in this one, especially because we can see several aspects that "humanize" the plot and make us empathize with the characters, on the one hand we see Michael collapsing in the face of his problems, on the other hand we see the issue of the rights of the workers who were constantly abused by their employers at that time, and this is something that Pamela Lyndon Travers (the author of the Mery Poppins novels) wanted to emphasize in her work.

And the last aspect I want to talk about is the performances, I really loved them, all the actors lived up to their characters, but I feel I must highlight Emily Blunt's performance, as I feel she was much more faithful to what Pamela Lyndon Travers expected when Disney asked for the rights to film the movie in 1964, I don't mean by this that Julie Andrews' performance wasn't good, she did a great job, just as Disney and the director of the film expected, but in this sequel there was a change in the personality of Mery Poppins (which some liked and some didn't) but that was precisely the personality that Pamela described in the books, a very strict and even a bit cold nanny, who nevertheless helped the children to develop their capacity to imagine. On the other hand, I must emphasise the fact that Emily brought a lot of elegance and a unique touch of sensuality, which took this character to another level.

It is a film that I recommend with my eyes closed, due to the fact that, despite not liking musical films so much, I could enjoy from beginning to end, it is a very well done work in every way. Thank you very much for your attention, I sincerely hope you liked this review 😊.

  2. A Geeky Dad's Movie Guide to Marry Poppins Returns (2018)@hanshotfirst2640d

Although it may seem like my family goes to the theater to see every quality kids movie, even we sometimes miss one or two. Sadly, we never did quite get around to seeing Mary Poppins Returns on the big screen. And now I thoroughly regret it.

Mary Poppins Returns is an incredibly dumb movie. The story is dumb. The excuses to transition from one delightful musical number to the next are dumb. The cameos by actors from the original are dumb. The whole thing is dumb.

It is as dumb as playing with Star Wars action figures and pretending to control an epic battle. It is as dumb as making up a game in your buddy's basement that involves sliding the coasters under the couch legs into a shoe box. It is as dumb as dressing up in Ninja pajamas and throwing balled up socks at your little brothers. It is as dumb as having a squirt-gun fight inside the house. It is as dumb as running around the neighborhood, jumping into bushes, and pretending you are G.I. Joe.

In short, Mary Poppins Returns is as dumb wonderful as childhood itself.

I warn you, if you are looking for a movie that makes sense, this is not the film for you. You are far too much of a grown-up to enjoy this movie. However, if you are like me and you want to be reminded of watching the original Mary Poppins with your mom and older sister (before you decided you were far too cool for them), then grab your child, sit them down next to you, and enjoy this wonderfully dumb movie. Be prepared to provide ample hugs to your little treasure (or maybe they will need to provide them for you). Because if you are in the right frame of mind, this movie will fill you with overwhelming emotion. Sometimes it will be pure joy that moves you to tears. Other times it will be sadness. Either way, it will move you.

I spent almost all of the 130 minutes with a smirk on my face. The story is simplistic and nonsensical... but then again so is childhood. It is merely an excuse to jump from one fantastical musical and visual sequence to another. The animation is wonderful. Director Rob Marshall wanted the animation to hearken back to the technological breakthrough that was the original Mary Poppins. To this day, Dick Van Dyke's dance with the penguins is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in a movie. To pull that off in 1964 was nothing short of... impossible (but we all know that this word means nothing to Miss Poppins).

By far the best thing about this movie was that it felt like I was watching a 1960s musical with my family. Back in my day... we only had four TV channels... and we liked it!

No we didn't like it! However looking back, it forced me to bond with my mom, aunts and uncles over some content I would have never chosen to watch if I had more options. Every Sunday, I would go to my grandma's house. During my 10 hour stay there, I played with toys, games (including the damn Barbie Queen of the Prom game that my sister forced me to play with her), and we would watch "Family Classics". That is where I saw things like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Music Man.

It seems that Mary Poppins Returns impossible goal was to transport me back to my grandma's noisy, crowded, living room. Once again Mary Poppins did what she does best. She made the impossible possible.

It's funny that I never noticed my 11 year old daughter MJ sitting next to me in that small living room enjoying Julie Andrews singing about spoonfuls of sugar. But as I picture the scene now, she's right there next to me.

    Thank you Mary Poppins.

  3. Mary Poppins Returns - Movie Review@coldsteem2733d

Did we need another Mary Poppins film? Probably not. But there is still something magical about Mary Poppins that makes a sequel worth watching. Mary Poppins Returns picks up a generation later, introducing a new generation to the magic. Maybe we do need a little Mary Poppins in our life. It is a lot more wholesome than a lot of the other garbage coming out of Hollywood. But there was room for improvement.

When Michael Banks (Ben Wishaw) and his sister Jane (Emily Mortimer) were children, their family was visited by a magical nanny named Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt). Now that they are grown, the family has fallen on hard times. Michael's wife passed away last year leaving him to raise his three children alone. Michael has taken out a second mortgage to help ends meet leading to a pending foreclosure. His children, Anabel (Pixie Davies), John (Nathanael Saleh) and Georgie (Joel Dawson) are sent on an errand. When Georgie sees a kite, he runs through the park to retrieve it. As he reels his kite in, he finds it was caught in a nanny. Mary Poppins. The children return home with their nanny, who brings the right combination of magic, imagination and balance back into the Banks house. She also helps the family as they save their house from a corrupt banker.

Disney wasn't playing around with their reboot of the Mary Poppins franchise. They brought in David Magee to create the screenplay. Magee hasn't written many screenplays. Three to be exact. But two of the three have been nominated for Oscars (Life of Pi and Finding Neverland). He was teamed with Director Rob Marshall who was Oscar nominated for his film Chicago in 2002. While that appears a recipe for success, I thought the story was a bit formulaic. The film maintained a strong connection to its roots and appeared to place a lot of emphasis on creating a strong bond with the original film. It succeeds in that sense. Yet I felt the story was predictable and a bit forced at times. With that in mind, there is just something about Mary Poppins that makes you see past those flaws. I was hoping for more yet didn't feel let down.

The cast for Mary Poppins Returns is stocked with plenty of Oscar winners, although not in the lead roles. Meryl Streep (who has three) makes a cameo, as does Angela Lansbury, who has been nominated three times, but never won. Dick Van Dyke also has a cameo, although I was surprised to see he has never won an Oscar. The only major character to have won is Colin Firth, who plays the antagonist in this film. While Emily Blunt is not an Oscar winner, she was perfectly cast in the lead role. She contained the magic needed to make this film work. I really liked that choice. She owned the role. While the film could have been better, I wouldn't rule her out for an Oscar nomination this time around. I didn't care for Ben Wishaw as Michael. It was the one role that nagged at me a bit. But overall, the film had a stellar cast stocked with talent.

As one would expect, Mary Poppins Returns received a family-friendly PG rating from the MPAA. The film is geared towards children and their were plenty at the showing we attended. One little boy sitting nearby seemed mesmerized by the film. There is not much to worry about with this film. There is some animated action that is intense, but carefully rendered. One of the themes deals with the loss of the children's mother, but it is handled with a soft touch. But it might be tough on a child who has experienced that recently. Aside from that, I can't think of a reason not to let anyone and everyone see this film. The film is a bit long at two hours, ten minutes.

Mary Poppins Returns is wholesome family fun. The writers had the option of updating the film with a new family and plot in mind, but chose to create a strong connection to the original film. The story follows the Banks family a generation later, which seems a good choice for giving the material a fresh look while remaining true to its identity. The plot was a bit flat and predictable, but I still enjoyed the ride. The characters were good, but I think the role of Michael could have been cast better. Overall, this film did not disappoint. It could have been better, but I found I enjoyed it more than I probably should have. Maybe there is a nostalgia affect at work. 7.5/10.

  5. Mary Poppins Returns why I hate hollywood@mediaguy3035d

Fuck hollywood. How dare they remake a timeless classic like Mary Poppins. Shove the people that made this movie into a chimney. All I allow hollywood to do is make crappy Nanny Mcphee movies, that is the closest I allow. But this is crossing a line.
