Well, I think we all know the version of Matilda by Danny De Vito in 1996, this movie is beautiful and it became one of my favorites, I remember watching it a lot and even the part of Trunchbull scared me For that reason I wanted to give a version to this new adaptation.

I want to tell you about what I personally liked and did not like, although I liked the story, I liked the connection between Matilda and Miss Honey, she had visions of her teacher's past out of nowhere and although It's weird, it seems pretty accurate to me.

The film feels like a play, very few camera changes, little set design, in each song we only see how the protagonist of said song looks at the camera making us believe that it is with us, all this I feel is very successful, excellent for a musical like this

The movie is a musical so those people who say it's pure music is the most obvious thing in the world 😂, you don't like them to sing in movies, so this is not for you. I love the choreographies and the songs, especially the one with the alphabet and Bruce's, although the Bruce is missing!Bruce! I feel like they could include it and it would still look great.

What I mainly did not like and bothered me a lot is that Bruce was not a Chubby actor, he was a child with a pillow on his stomach that made him look weird and uncomfortable to watch, I don't see the need to disguise someone that ugly The same thing happened with Trunchbull, but let's say this one was more subtle. Are they characters whose characteristic is great because they disguise them until they look like a school play?

It didn't feel very fluid, that is, at times you felt that the film was going very fast and on the other hand you felt that it lasted for hours.

Matilda's character seems more like a rebellious teenager, at times I didn't like her, she didn't look like such a spoiled girl, she didn't seem so unbearable to me that I even didn't like her in most of the movie.

I felt the farewell to her parents was even more empty, even for parents like them a minimal gesture of love, this time they left her there like a lump of potatoes and they didn't even show that their hearts were speaking a little bit. I liked the performance of Harry, Matilda's father, but on the other hand, I hated her mother's (Zinnia), I didn't like her at all times.

We know that it was almost impossible to beat Danny de Vito's adaptation, there are many details that I feel could be improved, especially in terms of inclusion, I think that's why I mainly didn't like it. What do you think? Have you seen her yet?

Hello dear cinephile friends, today I come to give you your respective dose of nostalgia with this beautiful movie that became a classic of the nineties, and which is being talked about recently because on December 25th Netflix will release a new movie, also based on Roald Dahl's classic, but with some changes that... well, that adapt to today's new standards where they resort to forced inclusion as a way to be more sympathetic to the audience, but anyway, that's another matter, today I want to talk about the 1996 version we all know, the one that most of us grew up with, and made us fantasize about having powers, so without further ado let's talk about Matilda.

    cine.jpg

Although this film is not a faithful copy of Roald Dahl's book, it does keep its essence and in general terms I could say that Danny DeVito (who was the director of the film as well as playing Mr Wormwood) did an excellent job of adaptation. For context (in case any of you haven't seen the film) I'll give you a brief summary of the story. It is about a girl who is mistreated and despised by her own family, but over time she discovers that she is different, as she has developed and perfected certain powers that not only help her to simplify her life, but also to punish injustices.

One of the things I liked most about this film is the script. Wow, what a good job! I like the way it's structured, it makes you don't miss any detail, even though it obviously won't have as many elements as the book since that wouldn't be possible, but the characters keep the same personality as their literary counterparts, really, in every way, without altering anything.

As for the characters, obviously Matilda is my favourite because she has a lot of determination despite being so small, so she goes after what she wants and doesn't rest until she gets it, she is the living example that the environment that surrounds a child is influential but not determinant, this means that, even though she had many possibilities to end up being a good-for-nothing, like the rest of her family, it was her own decisions that guided her to a different way, she just didn't want to be like that. Another thing I love the character for is that even though she obviously has an above average IQ, she never settles for what she's learned, she continues to cultivate her mind to expand her knowledge, she's just brilliant.

I like the scene (and I think everyone does) where Matilda discovers that she does indeed have powers and begins to work hard to perfect them, sometimes she fails but step by step her skills increase, becoming more precise, This sequence is accompanied beautifully by "Little Bitty Pretty Woman" it is exciting to see her happy face while she uses her powers, it is also a special scene because, according to Danny DeVito, Mara Wilson was very embarrassed to dance on the set, so Danny asked everyone who was off camera to dance so she wouldn't feel uncomfortable. This scene is also important because it is intended to show us that it is a moment of fulfilment for Matilda, where she really feels at home for the first time, without having to hold back.

This brings us to another scene in particular, where Matilda, by stealing the videotape from the cops, gives her father a chance, proving that she has not only a brilliant mind, but an extraordinary nobility.

Another of my favourite characters is Miss Honey who did her job as a teacher very well, because as soon as she discovered her pupil's mental ability she wanted to do something to help her improve, she realised that she should be at a higher level, unfortunately her efforts were in vain but she had very good intentions, on the other hand I liked the fact that with time, the relationship between the teacher and the pupil became so strong that the teacher tells her how her life was when she was a child, and this allows us to discover that the teacher Honey feels very identified with Matilda.

    image.png

    Fuente

We can't deny that one of the best scenes in the film is where Mistress Miel and Matilda enter Trunchbull's mansion and she chases them, it's pure adrenaline, the scene is so well done that you feel very scared of the possibility of being caught.

Another scene that I found epic is when Matilda makes Trunchbull believe that Magnus is tormenting her, and this leads me to the scene where Matilda decides to show her powers openly in the school, she does it because she is fed up with the selfish and unhealthy attitude of the headmistress, but she, prey to the demons of her own mind, continues to believe that it is really Magnus (Miss Honey's father) who decided to come back for revenge. The scene is hilarious and satisfying because we as viewers want this woman to get what she deserves, but at the same time it is disturbing and even a little scary, why? I would venture to say that it is the voices of the children reading aloud that makes the scene more disturbing and therefore interesting.

Matilda's action leads to an uprising by the other students who are not willing to tolerate the attitude of the hateful headmistress any longer, that is undoubtedly epic, and should have taught this villain a great lesson, no matter how small and weak you think someone is, if they have a brilliant mind they can achieve great things, besides, in unity there is strength, a single defenceless child could not even contradict her, but the whole school united was even able to expel her.

In conclusion, it is a wonderful film (in my opinion) plus one of the things I almost forgot to mention is that I loved Mara Wilson's determination, despite the immense pain she felt for the illness and subsequent death of her mother, she continued with the shooting of the film, and it is inevitable not to discover a certain tinge of sadness in her look, something that suited the character, obviously since she was also suffering, although for different reasons. I definitely think it is a film never to be forgotten.

  3. 'Matilda' by Danny DeVito Review: A simple story with creative filmmaking@namiks1350d

    vlcsnap-2022-10-17-19h50m41s635.png

I really cannot recall how many times I have seen Matilda throughout my life. Growing up owning it on VHS and having siblings that loved the film and thus seemingly had it on repeat over the uears of our childhood. Matilda was a film that we loved, even though it felt strange and cruel. A tale meant for the family that displayed kindness and childhood innocence with a passion for learning. Of course as mentioned still detailing much of the cruel found within the world, ranging from mean parenting, to the harsh and seemingly militarised nature of school principles. Of course from a child's perspective, the two potentially most evil types of people to exist. Though in the case of Matilda, this story isn't met without some type of supernatural gift that makes our protagonist stand out a little more from other children, giving off another look at the idea of a gifted child.

It seems I often forget that Matilda was also directed by the much loved Danny DeVito, of which most would recognise in his more recent performance as Frank in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Though also holds a position in the film as Matilda's father. This always makes me end up enjoying the film a little extra as the years go by, seeing the talent of the actor and director, versatile is his knowledge of filmmaking and capable of playing both serious and highly comedic roles; though he started off in the days of Taxi, which some may know of. Funnily DeVito goes as far as even narrating the film as well as acting in it.

To add, Matilda is a film that is meant for the family, but holds some really appealing and creative directing to it, utilising many camera movements and perspectives that add to the film's almost comic like nature. Something I only came to notice with this most recent reviewing. Adding to my appreciation for the film.

    Matilda

    vlcsnap-2022-10-17-21h05m24s823.png

Anyone familiar with Matilda may be familiar with the source material it is based on. Originally created by a British author named Roald Dahl that wrote many stories aimed for children. Including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG, and The Witches. This of course gives you a general idea of what Matilda is in terms of how it perceives the idea of a children's story while still very much grounded in displaying the weirdness and cruelties often found in life, even for the youth. Matilda explores the idea of childlike innocence surrounded by modern idiots. Taking certain stereotypes of certain characters within a child's life and exaggerating them for the purpose of story. Matilda follows a bright young child with a drive for learning, though born into a family that holds no ambition outside of material possessions and the consumption of television. This contrast serving up as the disconnect between a young girl's curiosity for the world and a struggling working class family that doesn't care much else for anything but money.

The way in which Roald Dahl creates stories can be quite, well, disturbing in part. Where characters and their cruel nature particularly towards children that results in a rather unsettling world, typically where other adults seem completely oblivious to it all. Though it works in establishing this idea that the world is from a child's perspective. This also adds to a wide range of characters that feel unique, both in visuals and characteristics. Something that seems a bit more rare in today's filmmaking as characters almost seem identical, even through appearance. DeVito translates this all into a film adaptation very well, particularly through the simplicity of colour to display positivity and negativity. Bright colours around Matilda to display their innocent and good nature, and dirty dark tones to display the bad that surrounds. Even going as far as displaying the mould that appears on the ceiling of Matilda's school that is seen for only brief moments during one scene, where it is only seen in the background. It adds so much to the environment and world building just with a little attention to detail that expands upon characters themselves. Of which even the characters stand out: Matilda's friends having defining characteristics. One tall and long, another short with rounded features, even as far as large circular glasses. It reminds me much of animations where character designs are exaggerated and made to stand out.

Set design contributes to all of this so well, as mentioned in regards to the mould. Though the school goes as far as holding additional signs that our principle is just evil. The text: 'you are not learning if you are having fun' sits above the chalkboard in the classroom. A set of rules on either side that details the very militarised expectations she holds for the students that must obey at all times. This adds to colour and design of the world they are within too. Showing a New York urban environment but mixed alongside the strange futuristic look of the 60s as buildings have interesting designs and colours that certainly would not be used today. Vibrant and standing out, almost nightmarish in their look. This all places us into a world that doesn't quite seem all that similar to our own, showing something that does seem more of the works of fiction than reality, not quite allowing you to pinpoint exactly where this may be located. Only more through the accents that pertain to a very thick New Jersey and New York nature.

To add to this all is the use of creative camera movements that are used to amplify the characteristics visible. Dutch angles throughout the film on the mean characters, revealing their off-balance nature in society and displaying how it doesn't really serve much place here. Slow camera movements and up-close perspectives of Matilda, often looking down at her to show her small but powerful personality in regards to her innocence and intelligence. We see the camera even panning upward at characters to reveal their size and give us the view from those smaller, those who would be considered their victims. Children, to be exact. These creative angles are used throughout the film, and it seems like the camera is rarely still, and instead is in constant motion. It makes things more immersive and fast-paced when otherwise the scenes might not be that engaging in terms of action. This pushes these moments forward to the audience in a way that makes us feel that things are more serious. The introduction of a character or location. The tension building in a scene where children are challenging an adult.

As the film progresses we see how Matilda is capable of so much more. Extending beyond regular young intelligence and passion for learning, and into the real of holding supernatural powers to some degree. Capable of manipulating items with her mind. I guess there are plenty of ways in which we could analyse this aspect of her character and connect them to various potential metaphors, like the example of a gifted and misunderstood with underlying conditions, not quite getting the help they need to flourish and understand themselves, surrounded by people that make things worse. Some might refer to the idea of autism here, but I think I would be pulling at strings to make that connection. Though it is interesting to know such a comparison can be made.

    Filmmaking

    vlcsnap-2022-10-17-21h29m19s715.png

DeVito's directing talent takes a wholesome but strange approach to the Matilda story. With vibrant colours and cartoon inspired character designs and sounds. Often enough using cartoon like sound effects in moments of comedy. They work quite well given they aren't used too often. Though one of the best parts of the film comes down to its music choices. The score is great and fits the film perfectly. With songs containing lyrics only really used two or three times in the film, but during the moments of Matilda's greatest joys, when she gets to be herself. Over the span of montage sequences. Though the film still feels very much related to the family film genre that was so much larger back in the 90s and earlier 2000s.

Though Matilda's directing seems to be on a more serious note throughout the runtime. While still showing some of the comedic and relaxed aspects that make the film a wholesome story in which a young girl finds where she belongs in life, escaping the hardships she faced for most of her life before that. Still coming to an end on a positive note under DeVito's narration.

Hello hive, today I come to talk about what for me is a classic of my childhood, these days a cousin mentioned this movie and triggered my desire to see it, so that's the reason why today I want to come to talk about Matilda (1996).

Matilda is a children's movie released in 1996, directed by the great Danny DeVito and starring Mara Wilson. Matilda is a mix between a kid's movie, comedy and a good touch of drama which makes this movie pretty solid, so let's begin!

This is one of those movies that I have seen all my life, I have seen it many times and every time I can I revisit it, I quite like it but this last time I tried to watch it in a little more objective way and that nostalgia didn't win me over.

To be honest I had no idea that this movie was based on a novel of the same name and it wasn't until today that I started to do some research about Matilda that I found out about it and in my opinion it makes a lot of sense because although it is a movie in which the main audience are children the plot is quite complete and it is very well written.

The plot of this movie is pretty good, a super gifted girl who due to not very favorable situations with her family manages to develop powers to get her way but obviously all under a very positive perspective.

Something that keeps surprising me about this movie is the way they show the magic, the effects they use to achieve these scenes, I say that they call my attention because although it obviously feels "weird" the truth is that it looks pretty good, in general terms the direction of this movie is pretty good (another fact that I did not know was that the director of this movie was Danny DeVito and I was also quite surprised).

The performances in this movie are impressive, especially that of our main character, it always amazes me to think about the process that children must have to get to have performances of such a high level. Something I want to highlight is that the last time I saw it in its original language (English) and in my opinion it changes a lot the general vibe of the movie, everything feels a little more serious, personally it always catches my attention when I see movies from my childhood in their original language, however this one in particular seems to me it acquires a different tone, mostly because of Matilda's voice that is not as sweet as the one we are used to in the Latin dubbing.

Another thing that we can highlight of this film is its villain, she is a good antagonist, we are all clear that without this character the film would not be the same, because although we do not believe it the villains have more importance than it seems because these are the ones that most of the time help to close the arc of our protagonist and that this grows as a person (exactly as in this case).

Matilda has been one of those movies that has managed to pass generations and for this reason it is a movie that can be enjoyed from a child to an adult, and even today I think it has aged quite well, besides scenes like Bruce have become memes and this helps the film to stay in popular culture.

Personally Matilda fascinates me and being objective I think it's a very good movie, it has a story that doesn't falter, a good villain, a good ending and in general the main character's arc is well constructed. It's cool to see classic movies that are really good and that their base is not just nostalgia, for me Matilda is one of those cases, it's a movie that stands out by itself.

Hello internet people! Everything ok? Continuing with the movie talk, today it's the turn of one of my favourite comedy movies and it's the case of Matilda. Produced by TriStar Pictures and directed by Danny DeVito himself, Matilda tells the story of a little girl who, thanks to her great intelligence, unleashes and develops psychokinetic abilities to deal with her problems.

Matilda is born to irresponsible parents and because of this, she grows up, despite her young age, she becomes quite independent. Matilda's adventures begin when her father finally decides to enrol her in school and it's there that she meets her headmistress, Agatha Trunchbull.

This woman suffers from infantophobia and is abusive and cruel to children, torturing them in various ways, one of the most famous being locking them in a dirty, damp cupboard with nails stuck in it, something like an improvised iron lady who doesn't allow the infants to lean against the walls or sit down. Thanks to her mistreatment, Matilda unleashes her powers of telekinesis and from then on practices to develop them as she thinks they could be useful later on.

Miss Honey (Matilda's teacher and with whom she has quite an emotional attachment) tells Matilda on one occasion that the headmistress of the school is her aunt, her mother's half-sister, and that after her mother's death, Magnus (Miss Honey's father) asked Agatha to live with them so that she could help him look after his daughter, but shortly after that, he committed suicide, or so they say, and after that, she was mistreated by Agatha until she was able to move out because her aunt had taken over the Honey's property. Matilda tells her teacher that she doubts that Magnus committed suicide and Miss Honey agrees, suggesting that they both think that Agatha Trunchbull had something to do with his death.

Because of this tragic story and because she has mastered her powers, Matilda decides to go to her headmistress's house to scare her into believing that the spirit of Magnus Honey is haunting her so that she will return her possessions to her daughter. In the process, Matilda leaves her headband in the branches of a tree, which then flies with the wind to Tronchbull as she was fleeing the house. So the next day Tronchbull stalks Miss Honey's entire class looking for the culprit (whom she suspects to be Matilda). Matilda, however, had drawn up a contingency plan and so, moving blinds, tables, chairs and so on, with the help of her powers, she also writes a threatening message on the blackboard:

"Agatha, This is Magnus, give my little bumblebe her house and her money, them get out of town, if you don't I will get you, I will get you like you got me. That is a promise.""

Terrified to learn that Magnus' revenge is not unfounded, Agatha flees in terror, but not before being booed and humiliated by all the students fed up with her abuse. Finally, Matilda's family intends to flee the city because Harry's (Matilda's father) illegal business has been discovered. Matilda asks her parents to sign an adoption permit from the library for Miss Honey to be her new mother and the Wormwoods decide to sign it to at least do something good for their daughter after all, and so Matilda is left living in the old Honey House with her teacher and now mother, who has become the new headmistress of the school.
