What's up community? It's been a while since I've been here.... I hope you are having a good time and are feeling great. Animation is really a medium with which you can tell many stories in which, in some way, we could feel identified or empathize with the character who speaks to us. This time I want to talk about Memoir of a Snail, this Oscar nominated movie made in stop-motion is quite touching.

Written and directed by Adam Elliot, this 2024 film is narrated by the protagonist Grace Pudel, in which she is narrating to her snail Sylvia her tragic life since her birth. Grace is an Australian girl who is the twin of her brother Gilbert, both lived with their father, a former French juggler who was left paraplegic due to an accident, the mother of these children died in childbirth. When their father died, they were both adopted and taken to live with different families, Grace was left with a very nice family, but too absent and Gilbert was taken to an apple farm with a very religious family that mistreated him. Grace has a lot of trouble forming relationships and takes refuge in her large collection of snail objects, she has a close friend, an old woman named Pinky, but throughout the film it seemed that nothing but misfortune would happen in Grace's life.

I think many people could identify with Grace, personally I have not gone through family misfortunes like her, but throughout my life it has been very difficult for me to make friends and I have really felt a little lonely in my life. This movie really touches sensitive fibers and, do not think that because it is an animated film is suitable for children, on the contrary, it is a very raw movie that reflects one of many realities that exist in the world, I really recommend that you go to see this movie, preferably in the cinema, because by supporting this type of art, we make sure that works like this continue to be made. I hope you liked my recommendation today, I'll say goodbye for now, thank you very much for reading and see you later in another post ❤️

  2. Memoir of a Snail | Review [ENG-ESP]@davidpena21469d

New movies keep coming to the screens and many of them have achieved a great impact, as well as some of them have been nominated for very important awards for the quality and the work they present, which is impressive and that allows them to continue bringing out more productions. This time I managed to see a film from last year, which achieved a great impact by the way they managed to recreate everything and correctly use stop-motion and to bring the film to the top, which is known as memories of the snail and we dive into a story full of comedy and a bit of drama that takes us to see the life of a couple of characters that will not always be rosy things.

It is a film that adapts to all ages, the way they managed to develop the whole situation and are issues that are seen today in society, which many people have to go through as are the changes of adolescence, mental changes, the death of a person and everything leads to people having to make decisions in order to get out of it and get on with life. Therefore, this time we are going to see the story of two brothers who have been there together since the day they were born and it shows all that affection that both have, which leads us to wonder: Will the brothers be happy, will they stay together, and many other things that come out.

    image.png Source

It is a film that takes a great pace and shows the life of the brothers from an early age, which is something that allows us to feel identified, since everything we tend to our parents aside, serves as an example to move forward in life and that is why the film is very interesting, even though the family was not in the best situations. Beyond that I really liked the way the brothers have to get ahead and not be intimidated by society and each of them with a personality that leads them to face many challenges and shows how life goes by very fast and the opportunities are few and far between and that's why decision making plays a big role in the lives of these brothers.

    image.png Source

The way they managed to recreate the whole plot and each of the scenes are very good, for the very fact of being a stop Motion and is something that requires a lot of work to achieve things like this, keeping a great thread and rhythm throughout the film. Also another thing that brings a lot of value is how they narrate the lives of the brothers and each one of them presents something wonderful that leads them to continue fighting and it feels like any child in a situation like that because it is very realistic and despite the fact that in the world where they live they are all very different it leads them to be unique and take advantage of everything they can.

Each one of the voices in this movie are very good and each one brings a lot of value to the moment of having to recreate each character, where the main one is Grace, whose life is full of many emotions, sufferings and having to get ahead in order to be happy, also with a very positive attitude and achieves a connection with the snails, being like her friends and without them nothing of their lives would be the same. While the brother goes through moments of great tension, he is not the best and his life is always full of problems and the death of his father leaves him with a great emptiness, that is why the connection of these brothers is unique and that great love is noticeable.

It was a very nice movie, loaded with many teachings and this style that allows it to be very funny and themes that are important to be able to mature and move forward in life, since every situation in which one finds oneself there will always be a solution to move forward and be happy. That is why this installment of memories of the snail, is almost like life in a cycle, which we will all go through there, where one touches them first than others, so if you are looking for an animated film with very good reviews and reviews do not miss this great opportunity of Australian cinema.

It's been a while since I've shared content in this community; I've really had so much time left. any movie that really made an impact on me, so what better way to go back than this movie: Memoir of a Snail, this movie started appearing on TikTok, with many people cheering for it and talking about its type of animation, which as you can see is Stop Motions, to me this type of animation is truly an art form in its entirety, that's why I love these types of movies and I sincerely feel that there is no movie of this genre that is bad, because it takes so much dedication, that they wouldn't make it for a bad idea. So without further ado, let's talk about Memoir of a Snail. - - -

    IMG_0218.jpeg Memoir of a Snail

Synopsis: Grace's life since birth has been somewhat complicated, but with the help of her brother, romance novels, and her endless love for snails, she had a beautiful life. Everything began to decline after the death of her father. It was at that moment that Grace slowly looked for a way to face the world "alone."

    IMG_0223.jpeg

    Youtube

Grace Pudel and Gilbert Pudel are twins. Their life has been full of ups and downs since birth. Their mother died giving birth to them. Grace was born with a cleft lip. Since she was a baby, she underwent countless surgeries. However, her brother was always by her side. He even donated blood for her, not caring if he died (he didn't know his blood regenerated and was capable of sacrificing himself for her). They were polar bears. Opposites: Gilbert was quite pessimistic, while Grace always saw the glass half full, all optimism.

    IMG_0224.jpeg

    Cinepolis

She was bullied for a long time because of her "bunny face," but Gilbert was always there to defend her. As for her parents, her mother died in childbirth, her father was wheelchair-bound due to an accident, and she also suffered from an illness that sometimes left her sleeping so soundly that her children had to wake her with applause so her body would remember to breathe. The day that was supposed to be their happiest turned out to be the worst of all. They started off by going to the park, enjoying themselves as a family, and it ended with their dad sleeping forever.

    IMG_0226.jpeg

The siblings were separated after their father's death. It was at this point that life began to seem a little more difficult for them. They felt quite alone and hoped that they would eventually reunite. Grace was a little luckier than Gilbert with the family they had. Grace's adoptive parents were rarely around, but she found solace in Pinky, an elderly woman with quite a history. Gilbert, on the other hand, had a large family, driven by religion, to the point of seeming like a military regime. That's when they slowly begin their quest to find themselves again and surpass themselves, not dwelling so much on the past.

This movie seems quite depressing to me at first, I don't mean this in a bad way but from a more realistic perspective and it is, things don't always go well and not everyone has the same luck, sometimes there are people who receive blow after blow, but this doesn't mean that this is always going to be our life, sometimes we just have to change our perspective and let go of what doesn't let us be free. The animation is a work of art, I love the details, you can really see the love that was put into this production, it touches on super strong themes in a deep, realistic and raw way that makes you connect from the very beginning with the protagonist, you should see it, it's totally worth it.

I had no expectations when I decided to watch Memoir of a Snail... I knew it had been nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Film, and I also knew that Sarah Snook (who many of us knew as Shiv Roy in Succession) voiced its protagonist, but the truth is that I had no reason to even give it a chance, not because I considered it bad directly, but because my focus was simply on other works.

    1000144676.jpg Source

The thing is that despite this, from time to time I find it enjoyable to give movies a chance without giving it too much thought, and I am grateful that Memories of Snail happened to be exactly this.

    1000144765.jpg

The stop motion animated film directed by Adam Elliot can be defined as a comedy where we follow Grace Pudel, a lonely girl who has led a rather tragic life.

Memoir of A Snail has a style very reminiscent of what we might expect from someone like Tim Burton, using gothic and picturesque elements that are overflowing with imagination. But beyond its physical appearance, what makes it work so well are its endearing characters, starting with the aforementioned Grace, and her twin brother from whom she is tragically separated after the death of her father: Gilbert.

The film flows as if it were a short film, and for that reason it is praiseworthy that it manages to hook us for an hour and a half. Memories of a Snail works like a poem, where Sarah's narration recontextualizes everything we see from the perspective of Grace, a girl who has had a rather complicated life, but who always seems to find something to make life worthwhile. I really enjoyed her style of acid humor, and it seems to me to be a very important piece in this movement that seeks to show that animated cinema is not necessarily for children.

Although it is plagued with many recognizable aesthetic elements (As I said before, we could well associate it with Burton's gothic style), Memories of a Snail manages to feel refreshing, taking an unexpected course but perfectly coherent with what we saw from the beginning.

    1000144767.jpg

    1000144766.jpg

Its music is beautiful, its animation is very well done, and the character design conveys a very particular tenderness, without having to give up its more sinister notes.

  5. Memoir of a Snail (2024): for the broken lonely people | para la gente solitaria y rota@cristiancaicedo498d

Nominated for the Academy Awards | Nominada a los premios de la Academia

I have always liked stop motion animated films and I think this is perhaps my favorite animation style. Kubo and the Two Strings, Isle of Dogs, Coraline, Anomalisa, Fantastic Mr. Fox, are great films that - in my opinion - enjoy a more organic and, if you will, purer production. It's about making animated films as it was done before the computerized era, AI and CGI. I feel that there's some magic and charm in building the figures in plasticine and filming them frame by frame until you have a movie and tell a story.

That's why I was pleased to learn that among the five films nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, there are two that were made using this technique: Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and the one I'm going to review below, Memoir of a Snail. The first thing I noticed when I started watching this movie was that its aesthetics reminded me of another movie I saw some years ago, also in stop motion, and that I liked a lot: Mary and Max. And the reason was as logical as it was unknown to me at the time: both were written and directed by Adam Elliot. Hence, there are several similarities between the two films, both in style and in the themes treated, but the first thing I have to say about Elliot's films is that, while they are animated, they are not for children. It's not like other stories that work with different audiences and are for kids of all ages. No. Elliot's films are animated films exclusively for adults because of the depth and sensitivity of the subject matter. It's true that he has a charming mix between seriousness and humor and that besides provoking tears and knots in the throat and chest, his stories provoke smiles, laughter and moments of great tenderness, but in most cases it's a black humor, gloomy, perhaps even a bit depressing if one does know how to read the scenes. And I say all this, not as a reason not to see the film. On the contrary, I think it's part of Elliot's genius. But if you have never seen a film by this Australian director, I think it's good that you are forewarned and take these aspects into consideration before diving into Memoir of a Snail.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

The film tells the story of Grace Pudel, a lonely, strange woman who has never been able to fit into society and who, among her peculiarities, has the habit of collecting decorative snail-shaped figures. His house is full of snails, fictional and real, and multiple representations of these animals. At the beginning we see her saying goodbye to an elderly lady named Pinky who has just died and this episode is the trigger that drives Grace to tell the story of her life to one of her shells named Sylvia.

Making use of a non-linear time and aided by flashbacks, Elliot shows us Grace's childhood, the death of her father when she was just a child, the loss of her mother, the abuse she suffered at school at the hands of her classmates, but above all, the special relationship Grace always had with her twin brother Gilbert. Their father instilled in them a love of street art and great authors. Steinbeck, Kafka, Golding, Plath, may not be the most recommended writers for a pair of unsociable children, but both enjoyed immersing themselves in the pages of these great novels. Grace is withdrawn, affectionate and loves her brother who always defends her and who is a bit of a pyromaniac. Despite the difficulties and economic hardship, the three of them live more or less well until their father dies and the siblings are sent to foster families at the ends of the country. Grace goes to Canberra and Gilbert to Perth. That change, that decision they didn't make, that forced and prolonged separation will end up defining the destiny of each one. As the film progresses we can see how each of the siblings struggled through adolescence and adulthood and how they struggled with anxiety, anguish, pain and abuse from others, but above all with the pain of loneliness and the pain of feeling broken inside. Memoir of a Snail touches on themes such as religious fanaticism, orphanhood, depression, suicidal thoughts, domestic violence, sexual fetishes, kleptomania, childhood traumas... as I said at the beginning, it's not a movie for children. Not at all.

Grace va a Canberra y Gilbert a Perth.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

However, there are also moments of light. Some scenes make us laugh because of Elliot's sharp sense of humor; but Pinky, that character who dies at the beginning of the film, is a presence that radiates good vibes with all his eccentricity. The old woman's memories, all the things she experienced and that way in which nothing matters to her anymore is one of the happiest points of the film. Furthermore, Pinky represents a lifeline for Grace when she finds herself in the middle of an ocean of anguish and sadness and reminds us that having a friend, even just one, can make a difference.

The difficult but important topics, such as the loneliness of the strange, the pain of loss, the incomprehension; that friendship between two people of very different ages; the wisdom of the simple; the mixture of the comic with the tragic; All of these aspects are present in both Memoir of a Snail and Mary and Max, Elliot's other feature film that was released almost fifteen years ago. It's true that the story of Grace and Gilbert is marked by tragedy, but it also has moving, tender and beautiful moments. Grace's naivety, Gilbert's dreamy appearance, the love between both brothers, are things that disarm us, that move us, but at the same time expose us because by empathizing with these endearing characters, we feel them as part of us and then, when horror and tragedy knock on the door, we want to do something, but we can't and the helplessness of the Prudel brothers hits us as if we were one of them. I laughed a lot with this movie, but I also shed a lot of tears (the same thing happened to me with Mary and Max); which, as a whole, resulted in a great experience because cinema - like all art - must make us feel and Memoir of a Snail does that: melt the ice in your heart and make you react to the tragedy of others. I know that it may sound too depressing for an animated film and that most of you will prefer the Disney and Pixar stories, but I invite you to give this memorable film a chance, have any of you seen it yet? I read you in the comments.

  6. Memoir of a Snail (2024)@andreseloy581542d

The work of the director and the entire technical team is excellent, and is one of the strengths of the film, which knows how to mix quite well the comic elements with the more dramatic ones, with the appearance of many characters, in this narration of the life of that lady who wears on her head a snail hat, and collects all kinds of various objects related to this mollusk.

The film was shot during 8 years, and uses claymation (animation technique that uses plasticine for the creation of its characters and stop motion).

One of the film's strengths is that the narration of each of the situations by the main character, voiced in the original version by actress Sarah Snook, does not become tiresome.

There are some very powerful characters, especially Pinky, whom we see in the first scene of the film bedridden, before we are told what happened many years ago when the protagonist was not even born.

The problem is that there are too many characters, and we want to tell “almost everything” about each of them, so we find ourselves with a succession of ellipses, which make us lose interest in the most important characters.

Despite all this, the film plays quite well with this mixture of genres, has some witty comic details, some unexpected surprises in the final part, and many moments where it manages to touch the most sensitive fiber, as we get to know this life full of unfortunate situations.

The animals, and especially the snail, are present at all times, in some metaphors that can be extrapolated to real life. The filmmaker makes a social criticism, not in a direct way, to religious extremism and the damage they are doing to many people with their outdated ideas.

The film, which won the main prize at the prestigious Annecy festival, is aimed at the more adult audience, but it can also be seen by the youngest members of the family, who I am sure will enjoy this animation proposal different from what they are used to consume in Hollywood productions.

  7. Memoir of a Snail (film): Beautiful and touching with an interesting graphical style@netflixr565d

Yet another film that I probably wouldn't have heard about if it hadn't randomly popped up on my Plex and was put there by someone else that devotes dramatically more time to that sort of thing than I ever would. Memoir of a Snail is something that I think will appeal to most people but I want to say this right from the start, this "cartoon" is not for kids and you may invite a bunch of uncomfortable questions if you do try to watch it with your kids. I don't pay attention to G/PG/R ratings all that much anymore lately but since I don't have any kids I don't have to. If you do have kids though, this one might be one to not let them know that you even have.

At first glance this animated film is something that I think most folks would just glance over because it isn't Pixar and well, you don't really get much of a feel as to what the movie is actually about for quite a while into it, even though they do try to give that information to you as quickly as possible.

We are quickly introduced to "Grace", who has a life filled with one tragedy after another. These instances are presented in a dark-comedy sort of way that is actually meaning for you to laugh at the terrible things that happens to her and kind of admire the way in which she has grown strong enough, or numb enough depending on how you choose to look at it, to get through by focusing on the things in her life that bring her the brief moments of joy that she has. As the name would suggest, one of the things that she holds dearest to her heart is snails, which she collects in both living and artistic form from childhood to adulthood.

I think they decided to go with snails instead of cats or something like that because it is odd, and we are meant to feel as though Grace herself is odd and perhaps a bit gross. Thankfully, this isn't some sort of body positivity message that they are attempting to indoctrinate people with or if it is, it is so subtle that I didn't notice it and I am quite acutely aware of things like this when films and tv shows try to sneak it in.

Grace is a kind-hearted person, perhaps a bit too kind-hearted, and I don't know if this is meant to be some sort of moral of the story, but it is her vulnerability that gets her into some sticky situations as she progresses through life. This brings her a great deal of sadness but it also results in her making some very meaningful connections and I think this is a wonderful thing for a lot of us to see. In a world where everyone seems to be trying as hard as they can to appeal to everyone, Grace doesn't seem to be trying to appeal to anyone. She is who she is and while she isn't necessarily comfortable with that, she accepts it and gets on with life as best she can.

    [src](https://www.cinelinx.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Grace_Pinky_and_Ken_in_Memoir_of_a_Snail.original.jpg)

Grace makes some great friends, one in particular, that serve as a weathervane of sorts in her life and this was something else I found quite touching and real because sometimes, not very often, we meet people in real life that truly have a meaningful impact on our quality of life and for Grace, that comes in the form of her friend "Pinky", who is the polar opposite of Grace. Pinky is outgoing and flippant and this works for her in her own life but since Grace is shy and reserved, it would never work for her. She doesn't try to emulate Pinky, but the two of them perhaps because of their immense differences are able to talk about anything and see the world through very different sets of eyes.

    [src](https://eulaliemagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/Memoir-of-a-Snail-Grief-2.jpg)

So what is the film actually about? Well, thematically, it is about grief and Grace has plenty of that in her life and without Pinky, this grief might be too much for her to bear and again, this is a great reflection about how important the human connection is in a real person's life and one that after you watch this, you might have a renewed sense of how important such relationships are and perhaps convince you to embrace them as much as possible. I think that in life a lot of us are so concerned about wealth-accumulation, prestige, and being "cool" that we miss out on people that would really improve our quality of life. There is a short set of quotes from Christopher Walken where he talks about how friendships are the most important thing in life and I think everyone should watch that and take it to heart.

But let's stay on point with *Memoir of a Snail" for now.

This film is tragic and unless you don't have a soul or any sort of empathy, you are going to be affected by the terribly tragic life that Grace seems to perpetuate accidentally and because of her own choices on how to live. It's just one bad happening after the next with her and she goes through a wide range of methods of dealing with it even though most of her dealings are to not even address the problem at hand.

The film isn't preachy, nor is it trying to change anyone's mind, but it does make you think and to me that is a sign of a good film, animated or not.

They also use stop-motion and not computers and this is something I generally appreciate a lot more than a 200 million dollar Pixar something or other that 400 people worked on and just threw money at it until it was done.

Sadly, this film didn't make a big amount of money at the box office, but it appears to be doing well on streaming and this is good. Hopefully Adam Elliot will get the recognition that he deserves for this and will engage in more projects in the future.

    Should I watch it?

If you like animation then I would say that this is something unusual and refreshing and a nice break from the usual shite that Disney/Hollywood churn out like clockwork. Some might experience some difficulty because of the sometimes very thick Australian accents but we have subtitles for that. This is one of the best animated films I have seen in a long time and even though I tend to lean towards anime, this one surprised me and I believe that if you give it a chance you will enjoy this beautiful ride as much as I did.

photodune-6774981-recommended-grunge-red-stamp-xs-643x272.jpg Currently, this film is not legally available to stream as part of any subscription. It is still in some theaters in USA and is available for rent and to buy on Amazon, Apple, and Fandango.
