How can we forget the 1986 World Cup in Mexico? That was the World Cup of the Hand of God, which catapulted Maradona to the top, so much so that for some Argentinians it's as if Maradona were the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Some football fans reach those levels. I take this opportunity to recommend the 2006 film "El Camino de San Diego."

It's incredible that the World Cup could have been played in our sister country, but supposedly, in the early 1980s, the Colombian government said it couldn't cover many of the expenses, although the real reason might have been the political and narco-terrorist violence of that era. Those were years of violence and death in Colombia. Therefore, FIFA had to move quickly to choose a new host.

The film depicts the adventures of a fictional character named Martín de la Torre. According to what I've been able to find in historical records, he must be inspired by a certain Rafael del Castillo, who was key to Mexico winning the World Cup for the second time. I don't know much about that real person or if he suffered the same fate as the character in the film.

The film has a humorous and entertaining tone, ideal for pleasing everyone. While it touches on some issues related to corruption, both in FIFA and the Mexican Football Federation, the film doesn't intend to denounce anything. He acknowledges that it's all a racket, but the point is to enjoy the film, seeing how Mexico managed to secure the hosting rights despite strong US interest and its clear advantage. Part of the story is based on real events; the United States already wanted to host a World Cup back then, something they wouldn't achieve until 1994.

I found it an entertaining film, not a masterpiece, but it fulfills its purpose of entertaining and will appeal not only to soccer fans but also to those unfamiliar with the sport; they can watch it and understand it. Because Martín de la Torre's character is a scoundrel, a rogue, a man who will use any trick to achieve his goals. He's like any politician, a born liar.

To direct the film, they sought out Gabriel Ripstein, a filmmaker with a more extensive background in television series. I liked his film 600 Miles, and besides, he's the son of Arturo Ripstein, a Mexican filmmaker with an extraordinary career. Many of his films are essential viewing for anyone wanting to experience Mexican cinema. I still remember when I saw Deep Red and it left me speechless.

Parte de la historia se basa en hechos reales; Estados Unidos ya quería organizar un Mundial en su país por aquel entonces, algo que no lograría hasta 1994.

Me pareció una película entretenida, no una obra maestra, pero cumple su propósito de entretener y gustará no solo a los aficionados al fútbol, ​​sino también a quienes no estén familiarizados con el deporte; pueden verla y entenderla. Porque el personaje de Martín de la Torre es un sinvergüenza, un canalla, un hombre que usará cualquier artimaña para lograr sus objetivos. Es como cualquier político, un mentiroso nato.
