Hola, querido hiver.
¿Cualquier tiempo pasado fue mejor? Es el interrogante que Woody Allen busca sembrar en el espectador y que para responderlo nos sumerge en un viaje que cualquiera soñaríamos realizar. Este es mi primer contacto con la obra del aclamado y polémico director, y la verdad es que mi balance es muy positivo.
Gil (Owen Wilson) es un conocido escritor de Hollywood que quiere publicar su primera novela. Aprovechando un viaje de negocios de los padres de su novia Inez (Rachel McAdams) visitan París, esperando disfrutar de unas vacaciones románticas.
Se hace necesario mencionar que los padres de Inez son adinerados y se mueven en círculos de alto nivel. Transmiten desprecio por las tendencias creativas de Gil y se nota desde el primer momento que no lo ven como un futuro marido adecuado para su hija.
En cuanto a Inez tampoco entiende del todo las aspiraciones de su novio. Mucho menos su concepción romántica de la ciudad de París ni considera que los años 20 fueran su época dorada, algo que Gil repite entusiasmado cada vez que tiene la ocasión.
Una noche en la que están con unos amigos de Inez, Gil decide marcharse solo al hotel dando un paseo. En el camino es presa de una especie de hechizo que le transporta a sus anhelados años 20. Allí conocerá a las figuras más relevantes de la época, incluida una bella mujer que le hará replantearse su vida.
La idea argumental en principio no parece muy original, esperas encontrarte con el típico viaje en el tiempo y situaciones cómicas ya exprimidas. Que esté contenida en una comedia romántica acentúa los más que probables recelos. Sin embargo, el mensaje que nos deja la película es potente.
La nostalgia vende. A priori nos parece que todo lo anterior fue mejor que el presente, cuando la realidad es que fantaseamos con escapar del aburrimiento del ahora que asimilamos como imperfecto y anodino.
La película es un homenaje a los felices años 20 parisinos, sí. Y una sucesión de postales de la ciudad tanto de día como de noche, en la actualidad y hace un siglo. Es una delicia pasear por sus calles, reconocer sus más emblemáticos monumentos, incluso tratar de adivinar qué pintor o poeta es el que interactúa con el protagonista en cada momento.
Woody Allen refleja con acierto la atmósfera bohemia y disoluta, germen del arte genuino y vivido, en contraposición con el esnobismo y la hipocresía de los personajes actuales representados la familia y amigos de Inez.
El respeto y admiración por los personajes históricos que aparecen en el film se palpa en el cuidado y mimo con el que están caracterizados y representados. Sus rasgos físicos y de carácter se distinguen sin caer en la caricatura, integrándonos como cómplices en las escenas.
Lo mismo puedo decir de París. Es un personaje más. Allen envuelve parte de su historia y nos la presenta como un regalo que nos hace disfrutar, sin estridencias, dejándonos con una sonrisa en los labios y un poso de felicidad.
No puedo decirte si es mejor o peor que otras comedias del mismo director, pero precisamente eso me da cierta objetividad para decirte que me parece una buena película. Pasarás un buen rato, recordarás su esencia y tendrás unas ganas tremendas de conocer París.

Was any time in the past a better time? This is the question that Woody Allen seeks to sow in the spectator, and to answer it he immerses us in a journey that anyone would dream of making. This is my first contact with the work of the acclaimed and controversial director, and the truth is that my balance is very positive.
Gil (Owen Wilson) is a well-known Hollywood writer who wants to publish his first novel. Taking advantage of a business trip of his girlfriend Inez's (Rachel McAdams) parents, they visit Paris, hoping to enjoy a romantic holiday.
It bears mentioning that Inez's parents are wealthy and move in high-class circles. They convey contempt for Gil's creative tendencies and it is clear from the outset that they do not see him as a suitable future husband for their daughter.
As for Inez, she doesn't fully understand her boyfriend's aspirations either. Much less her romantic conception of the city of Paris, nor does she consider the 1920s to be her golden age, something Gil enthusiastically repeats whenever he gets the chance.
One evening when they are with some of Inez's friends, Gil decides to go for a walk alone to the hotel. On the way, he falls prey to a kind of spell that transports him back to his longed-for 1920s. There he meets the most important figures of the time, including a beautiful woman who makes him rethink his life.
The plot idea doesn't seem very original at first, you expect to find the typical time travel and comic situations already squeezed out. The fact that it is contained in a romantic comedy accentuates the more than likely misgivings. However, the message the film leaves us with is a powerful one.
Nostalgia sells. A priori it seems to us that everything that went before was better than the present, when the reality is that we fantasise about escaping the boredom of the now that we assimilate as imperfect and anodyne.
The film is a tribute to the happy Parisian 1920s, yes, and a succession of postcards of the city by day and by night, now and a century ago. It is a delight to stroll through its streets, to recognise its most emblematic monuments, and even to try to guess which painter or poet is interacting with the protagonist at any given moment.
Woody Allen successfully reflects the bohemian and dissolute atmosphere, the seed of genuine and lived art, in contrast to the snobbery and hypocrisy of the current characters represented by Inez's family and friends.
The respect and admiration for the historical characters in the film is palpable in the care and attention to detail with which they are characterised and portrayed. Their physical and character traits are distinguished without falling into caricature, integrating us as accomplices in the scenes.
I can say the same about Paris. She is just another character. Allen wraps up part of his story and presents it to us as a gift that makes us enjoy it, without stridency, leaving us with a smile on our lips and a trace of happiness.
I can't tell you if it's better or worse than other comedies by the same director, but precisely that gives me a certain objectivity to tell you that I think it's a good film. You'll have a good time, you'll remember its essence and you'll have a tremendous desire to see Paris.
