A couple of days ago I decided to give "Mother!" a chance again. From Darren Aronofsky, one of the strangest movies I've ever had the opportunity to see in my entire life, and one that I honestly had a hard time making up my mind the first time.
Starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem (who also do a wonderful job and this is undeniable, regardless of whether we liked Mother! or not), we are facing a work that exists in a constant limbo between the realistic and the abstract, where we follow the story of a couple whose patience is tested when they begin to receive a series of unexpected visitors.
He is a well-known writer who seems to have been facing a creative block for some time, desperate to find "something", a spark that will awaken his creativity and allow him to continue his work.
She, on the other hand, is a woman who lives to support him, spending all her spare time rebuilding the house they both live in, the childhood home of her husband and an earthly "paradise" in progress.
The dynamics of this couple change when they receive a man who is obsessed with the works written by him, who, in the midst of his creative impotence, decides to host him at his home to see if this is the solution to his blockage, however, little by little this man will attract more and more private visitors.
Although there is a facade of reality in "Mother!" Since the beginning of the film there are multiple elements that make it clear that this is not a story precisely based on our reality, this is reinforced with the ambiguous use of visual details such as the spontaneous destruction of certain areas of the house, as well as the sample regular beating of a heart that we do not know clearly what it implies.
However, as the story progresses we understand that we are actually dealing with a religious allegory, something increasingly evident due to the lack of visual and narrative subtlety that tarnishes the film.
You see, she (or "mother" as many prefer to call her) is a human representation of mother nature, obsessed with creating the perfect home to share with God (El).
When you begin to understand this, the perspective with which you review the events that occur in "Mother!" It changes completely, from the obsession that he has with receiving all the strange visitors (humanity) despite the fact that each time they do more and more damage to his home (Earth).
This is a very divisive film and it's easy to understand why, as Mother! It has a lot of great ideas on paper that lack the focus to make them work properly, yet when you put that tedious lack of subtlety aside, it's easy to feel trapped by its second hour, one of the most powerful and heartbreaking audiovisual pieces I've ever owned. the opportunity to witness in front of a screen, although many times they are no more than the monotonous repetition of an idea that was already very clear.
"mother!" It can work from many angles and leads us to question the role that humanity has in existence as a whole, something that does not even have to be anchored to any religion to work.
As his home is being destroyed, we are seeing how this bunch of men and women are being dictated by their own egoism, creating absurd symbolisms and clinging to material things, disconnecting from what gave meaning to "El's" words. first of all.
Undoubtedly, a rather polarizing film, but it honestly deserves a chance considering how well done it is, despite its flaws I loved it.

Hace un par de días decidí volver a darle una oportunidad a "Mother!" De Darren Aronofsky, una de las películas más extrañas que he tenido la oportunidad de ver en toda mi vida, y una en la que honestamente se me hizo complicado forjar un juicio la primera vez.
Protagonizada por Jennifer Lawrence y Javier Bardem (Quienes aparte hacen un trabajo estupendo y esto es innegable, independientemente de que nos haya gustado Mother! O no), estamos frente a una obra que existe en un limbo constante este lo realista y lo abstracto, dónde seguimos la historia de una pareja que ve probada su paciencia cuando empieza a recibir una serie de visitas inesperadas.
Él, es un escritor muy reconocido que parece enfrentar un bloqueo creativo desde hace un tiempo, desesperado por encontrar "algo", una chispa que despierte su creatividad y le permita continuar con su trabajo.
Ella, por otro lado, es una mujer que vive para apoyarle, y pasa todo su tiempo libre reconstruyendo la casa en la que ambos viven, el hogar de la infancia de su esposo y un "paraíso" terrenal en progreso.
La dinámica de esta pareja cambia cuando reciben a un hombre que se encuentra obsesionado con las obras escritas por él, quien, en medio de su impotencia creativa, decide hospedarlo en su casa para ver si está resulta la solución a su bloqueó, no obstante, poco a poco este hombre irá atrayendo más y más visitantes particulares.
Aunque existe una fachada de realidad en "Mother!" Desde que empieza el filme existen múltiples elementos que nos dejan claro que está no es una historia precisamente asentada en nuestra realidad, esto re refuerza con el uso de ambiguo de detalles visuales como la destrucción espontánea de ciertas áreas de la casa, así como la muestra regular de un corazón latiendo que no sabemos con claridad que implica.
No obstante, mientras la historia va avanzando vamos comprendiendo que en realidad nos encontramos ante una alegoría religiosa, algo cada vez más evidente debido a la falta de sutiliza visual y narrativa que empaña la película.
Verán, ella (O la "madre", como muchos prefieren llamarla) es una representación humana de la madre naturaleza, obsesionada con crear el hogar perfecto para compartirlo con Dios (El).
Cuando empiezas a comprender esto, la perspectiva con la que revisas los eventos que ocurren en "Mother!" Cambia totalmente, desde la obsesión que tiene él con recibir a todos los visitantes extraños (humanidad) a pesar de que cada vez le hagan más y más daño a su hogar (La tierra).
Esta es una película muy divisiva y es fácil entender por qué, ya que Mother! Tiene muchas ideas estupendas en papel que carecen del enfoque necesario para que funcionen correctamente, no obstante, cuando dejamos de lado está tediosa falta de sutileza, es fácil sentirse atrapado por su segunda hora, una de las piezas audiovisuales más potentes y desgarradoras que he tenido la oportunidad de presenciar frente a una pantalla, aunque muchas veces no sean más que la repetición monótona de una idea que ya estaba muy clara.
"mother!" Puede funcionar desde muchísimos ángulos y nos lleva a cuestionar el rol que tiene la humanidad en la existencia como un todo, algo que ni siquiera debe estar anclado a ninguna religión para funcionar.
A medida que su hogar se va destrozando, vamos viendo cómo este montón de hombres y mujeres van siendo dictados por su propio egoísmo, crean simbolismos absurdos y se aferran a lo material, desconectandose de aquello que me dió sentido a las palabras de "El" en primer lugar.
Sin duda, un filme bastante polarizante, pero que honestamente merece una oportunidad tomando en cuenta lo bien hecho que está, a mi a pesar de sus fallas me encantó.
