Hello friends from Hive, this time I present my participation for the Holos&Lotus community contest about Films that inspire, in which we must write about a movie that through its message has represented a change in our life, either by a reflection, something that has inspired us to achieve or something that has changed us for the better.

For this I had to meditate a lot about which movie has been so relevant as to say that it has changed my life in some way, or rather my way of seeing life, because I am not a person who usually connect intensely with film stories, I love movies, yes, they give me hours of entertainment, and I always share with my friends recommendations and stories, but in that sense I connect much better with music than with movies.

However, there is one film that makes me think about many things and reflect on life every time I watch it or when I remember it, and that is Mr. Nobody.

This is a Belgian film produced in 2009, directed by Jaco Van Dormael and starring Jared Leto. It tells the story of Nemo, a 118-year-old man who wakes up in a medical center in the year 2092, and he is the last living mortal, so he is subjected to a series of questions from others to learn about his life, and he begins to tell his life as a child. However, his story is bifurcated in different parallel timelines, which arise from a very important decision when his parents separate, does he go with his mother or does he go with his father, so we are shown how his life was in both timelines, what we do not know is which of them is the one that really happened or even if any of them happened.

This movie marked me, because it made me aware of how we build our life with every decision we make no matter how small. The only thing we don't decide is where to be born and who our parents will be, as well as our first years of life completely dependent on our parents, from then on we are responsible for our destiny, destiny is definitely built.

All this makes me reflect about my life, and makes me think about what would have happened if... At my 33 years old I have had many experiences that have arisen from important decisions, and others have happened because somehow the universe seems to be set to happen. For example, a few days ago I was talking with my two best friends from Univeristy, and I was telling them, what would have happened if I had not taken a sabbatical year when I graduated from high school to later enter the university to study journalism, we would not have coincided and studied together, and although I probably would have met them, I would not have had the wonderful experience of having their friendship in such a way, and enjoy so many great experiences, classes, trips, parties, meetings, experiences that even today after 15 years keep up together strongly. And maybe if it had not been like that, surely they would be other people, but they are the ones I love, I feel fortunate and I would not change anything at all.

    nobody.jpg Source

I have always been a sensible and coherent person, so most of my decisions have led me on a good path, although I have possibly missed opportunities to experience great moments as a consequence of my decisions, because sometimes I think I am not very risky, and I keep myself in a certain comfort zone. Still, if I am to relate my life to this movie, I feel that so far I have lived one of the most beautiful timelines that life could have offered me, where of course many of my decisions have played a fundamental role. Of course, if I could go back in time, I would like to make other decisions regarding some events, but it has forged in me an experience and I am sure that if similar events are repeated I will make the right decisions this time.

    Source

So that, sometimes when I have to make an important decision this movie comes to my mind, and I imagine a little of what the decision I take can lead me to, I imagine the ideal scenarios or harmful scenarios, I put in a balance what I have to lose and what I have to gain.

I highly recommend this movie, it will make you see life differently, it will make you meditate on what you have lived so far, and surely it will make you value much more what you have and your reality, or so I hope, because life can be very hard for many.

Thank you very much for your attention, I hope you have liked my participation, I invite @mairene1 and @mariavargas

What would you do if you could recall your past and think about the possible lives you could have lived? It's a question that makes many of us think about what was and what could have been. Drama, Romance and Science Fiction, combined with complex philosophical themes that bleat within this film, director Jaco Van Dormael has surprised us before with these themes, so here, at its most powerful peak, he invites us to reflect on multiverses of possibilities.

At 9 years old and suffering from his parents' divorce, little Nemo must make a decision, whether to stay with his mom or his dad, from this moment on, the film is divided into two parts: The life he would have if he had stayed with his mother (Natasha Little) and the life he would have if he had stayed with his father (Rhys Ifans). At the beginning of the film, Nemo explains that before birth, children can know what will happen after they are born, but the Angels of Oblivion erase the memory of children before conception, however, the Angels overlook Nemo so he can see possible futures of his life according to the decisions he will make.

From this point on, the film is divided into three parts: one when Nemo is 9 years old, one when he is 15 years old and one when he is 34 years old. In these three phases, Nemo meets the three loves of his life: Anna, Elise and Jean. Deciding to stay with his mother and her new husband Harry, Nemo meets Anna (Juno Temple) at school and falls in love with her. Later, as a teenager, he realizes that she is the daughter of Harry, his stepfather, and the two have a relationship, but Nemo's mother and Harry separate and Harry moves to New York City with Anna. Years later, Nemo and Anna (Diane Kruger) meet and have a passionate moment, but Anna is not ready to start the relationship right away and leaves her phone number with Nemo telling him to wait for her at a lighthouse, but Nemo loses her number because of a rainstorm that leaves the paper unreadable. Nemo waits for Anna at the lighthouse every night but she never arrives.

In another reality, Nemo, after being rejected by Elise, marries the first girl who danced with him at the prom, where he meets Jean and dances with her. Years later, the two become engaged, get married, have two children and Nemo becomes a rich man, but he is unhappy and bored with his marriage, so he leaves all his possessions to Jean (Linh Dan Pham) and leaves his family. At the airport, Nemo makes a random decision by flipping a coin, pretends to be a passenger with another name and a driver takes him to a hotel. In the room, Nemo is killed because his killer thought he was someone else.

At the end of the story, the elderly Nemo Nobody explains to the journalist that none of them exist, that they are just the invention of a 9-year-old boy who has to decide which parents to stay with. After this revelation, the world falls apart, bringing the story back to the beginning.

The film forces the viewer only to reflect and it is not the first time that the director, Van Dormael, writes and directs stories of this type with deeply philosophical themes, such as The Brand New Testament (2015), which talks about God as a cynical and malicious writer who lives in the city of Brussels, Belgium, with his 10-year-old daughter Ea, but this rewrites the history of the world revealing to each human being the time he has left to live. Or the film Toto, the Hero (1991), a tragicomedy that tells the story of an old man who begins to reminisce about his past life, thinking about the possible lives he could have lived; a story quite similar to that of Mr. Nobody.

As you can see, Dormael has that filiation of creating thought-provoking films in an extraordinary way, and with Mr. Nobody he was put back in the game, taking 7 years to finish it due to its complex script, something that we can appreciate when watching this masterful work. It has been quite satisfying to find so many aspects that make you admire the film, such as the music with Pierre Van Dormael in charge. The colors and paintings made by Christophe Beaucarne. So many elements well invested with a budget of 37 million euros.

A plot that invites you to think with more than detailed elements, a story of romance that never came true but could. Mr. Nobody, is one of those works that are hard to find nowadays, fine tuning the details and rethinking them over and over again. I give it a rating of 9/10, I've seen it several times and always get something new to analyze.

  3. Mr. Nobody: very confusing but worth watching@gooddream2955d

I have to admit that I quite like Jared Leto and didn't even know he was in the film when i decided to watch it because it is new-ish and I like science fiction. The fact that he was the star was just an added bonus.

The movie isn't science fiction in a spaceship sense (for the most part) as it mostly takes place in modern times (or even the past.) The movie has lots of bizarre moments but also a really touching love story mixed in, which I'm not afraid to admit, i quite enjoy from time-to-time.

    Warning: Spoilers ahead

    mr-nobody-movie-poster-2009-1020768753.jpg

First off, i don't want a character being named Nemo if they aren't in charge of a submarine or they happen to be a fish. They lose at least half a point for that blunder even though it is simply personal on my part.

Nemo in this film (Jared Leto) is a 118 year old person and is apparently the last remaining mortal on the planet. His brain seems to a be broken as he is attempting to recall his life through being hypnotized by a tattoo covered Ban Kingsley. Only then do we get to see a glimpse into Nemo's past, of which, he appears to have 3. This is where it gets really confusing.

The story jumps from life to life which is mostly focused on him being in love with or married to 3 different people.

One is Jean, who you just end up feeling sorry for because Nemo doesn't seem to be particularly dedicated to her despite the fact that she is a really lovely person. She isn't featured in the film very much.

    020-mr-nobody-theredlist.jpg

The second love interest is Elise. Who has quite extreme emotional issues and is a real handful both in the youth sequences and the adult ones.

    10002044365_89f2dde848_b.jpg

Elise is bedridden with depression for the most part and is prone to emotional outbursts that make her the most terrifying character in the movie. Nemo is an extremely loving partner and father and this makes her even more difficult to tolerate in the movie.

The last, and most important love interest is Anna. Anna actually ends up being Nemo's stepsister by his mom her dad getting married (I think, it isn't defined.) The two of them develop a relationship but end up getting split up because Anna's father moves to New York after he and Nemo's mom get divorced / separate. A lot of the rest of the film is dedicated to their longing for one another and even some sort of a psychic connection they share and also how fate intervenes to keep them apart at times.

    300cedfc72e1c4dcd89a1bb9f9baa847.jpg

I'm gonna have to nitpick about the casting here for a second. Anna's father is Canadian, yet Anna has a British accent as a child (living in Canada, with a Canadian father) but completely loses her U.K. accent by the time she is an adult. I can't figure this one out because we all end up adapting the accents of our parents and for the most part they stick with us forever. Perhaps they were the only 2 actresses that could be found that look enough alike. I don't know.

Ok, that is the main focus of the film but parts of it actually function almost like a documentary where Jared is explaining mysteries of the universe in an almost Neil deGrasse Tyson type way. Therefore, presuming that what they are saying is true in those portions of the film, you may actually end up learning something by the end of the movie.

The film is confusing because there doesn't seem to be any particular timeline or any one set of "truths" in the story-line. You exit the film not really knowing what actually happened or if any of it is actually real. It is stated by 118 year-old Nemo that "all of this is in the head of a 9 year-old boy." I guess that is ok, it doesn't really matter.

Overall i would say this is a very entertaining movie and it is up to the interpretation of the viewer as to what the heck is actually going on. So this means the movie makes you think about it long after you have seen it.

    My vote is 8 /10.

As always, i welcome and look forward to your comments.
