I must admit that my expectations with My Big fat Greek Weeding were quite low, since although I usually greatly appreciate romcoms from the early millennium, I remembered a couple of somewhat bitter opinions regarding this film that made me doubt a little.
However, although in general terms this film does not offer anything out of this world, honor where honor is due: it is a light and fun experience that knows how to tell a very typical story, moving away from the most bitter clichés of the genre.
Starting from the fact that all the main and secondary characters are excellently cast (Especially Nia Vardalos and John Corbett, who play the main roles and have incredible chemistry), My Big Fat Greek Weeding takes a simple premise and dedicates itself to exploiting it in every way. very appropriate way.
The key? Although its humorous approach lies in the cultural contrasts that exist between a Greek family and the average American, I feel that there is a certain universality in this idea, allowing that regardless of our background we can feel identified with everything that a cultural shock of this type implies. Whether because we are migrants, because we are part of a different religion, or because we simply grew up in a different socioeconomic context.
Despite its simplicity, it is refreshing that instead of forcing a temporary conflict between its protagonists (something very common in current romantic comedies), My Big Fat Greek Weeding focuses almost its entire duration on showing us the sacrifices that Toula and Ian go through. to find harmony between their very different lifestyles and families, thus becoming a textbook comfort movie.
Is it the best romcom in the world? Personally I feel no, but I would also totally understand if someone thinks the opposite, it is a work that ironically feels timeless (despite having a strong nineties aesthetic), has a very efficient script and it feels warm and moving.

Debo admitir que mis expectativas con My Big fat Greek Weeding estaban bastante bajas, ya que a pesar de que suelo apreciar muchísimo las romcom de principios del milleniol, recordaba un par de opiniones un tanto amargas respecto a este filme que me hacian dudar un poco.
No obstante, aunque en términos generales está película no ofrece nada del otro mundo, honor a quien honor merece: es una experiencia ligera y divertida que sabe narrar una historia muy típica alejándose de los clichés más amargos del género.
Partiendo por el hecho de que todos los personajes principales y secundarios están excelentemente casteados (Especialmente Nia Vardalos y John Corbett, quienes interpretan los roles protagonistas y tienen una química increible), My Big Fat Greek Weeding toma una premisa simple y se dedica a explotarla de forma muy apropiada.
¿La clave? Aunque su enfoque humorístico radica en los contrastes culturales que existen entre una familia griega y el americano promedio, siento que existe cierta universalidad en esta idea, permitiendo que independientemente de nuestro background podramos sentir identificados con todo lo que implica un choque cultural de este tipo. Ya sea porque somos migrantes, porque formamos parte de una religión diferente, o porque simplemente crecimos en un contexto socioeconómico distinto
Pese a su simpleza, es refrescante que en vez de forzar un conflicto temporal entre sus protagonistas (Algo muy usual en las comedias románticas actuales), My Big Fat Greek Weeding enfoca casi toda su duración a demostrarnos los sacrificios por los cuales Toula e Ian pasan para encontrar una armonía entre sus estilos de vida y familias tan diferentes, convirtiéndose asi en una comfort movie de manual.
¿Es la mejor romcom del mundo? Personalmente siento que no, pero también entendería totalmente si alguien piensa todo lo contrario, es una obra que irónicamente se siente atemporal (pese a contar con una fuerte estética noventera), cuenta con un guión muy eficiente y sabe wer cálida y conmovedora.
