My Octopus Teacher (documentary) : Absolutely beautiful and touching@netflixr748d
I'm a bit late to the party on this one because this one is several years old and I recall when it first dropped on streaming. I think I started to watch it, got bored, then walked away because I wasn't in the right environment to watch a documentary. This time, I was in my bedroom with tons of pillows and a phone in the other room so that I wouldn't be disturbed. This was the perfect environment for me to engage in a documentary that is at first, slow to get going, but then totally ropes you in.
This is a story about a long-term film maker, director and editor, who after getting burned out on the stresses of the industry returns to a childhood area on the coast of South Africa and decides to step away from having anything to do with the film industry and just live life for a while.
During that time he finds solace in cold water free-diving in the kelp forest off the coast and starts to fall in love with the peace that it brings him. It is during that time that he starts to engage with a female octopus and follows her every move for a while, eventually getting his underwater cameras involved.
He starts the journey out knowing about as much about octopuses as you or I do, but by the time it is all finished he has discovered things about the species that no one else in the world has ever witnessed before. It is truly remarkable footage that is also just beautiful to look at, even if you aren't interested in the scientific aspects of it.
During his time with his octopus teacher, he sees how challenging the nocturnal and isolated life of an octopus actually is, and also how dangerous it can be for an animal with little in the way of defenses, to survive in the wild.
The best part of it all is when after a certain amount of time the octopus has grown accustomed to the human's presence and stops seeing him as a threat and then the octopuses curiosity sets in and starts to accept him as a friend. The touching music in the documentary certainly helps add to the emotion that you feel during this production, but there is no denying the amount of time that was put into this especially when you consider that the entire project could have been ended any day if the octopus were to lose in one of the games of cat and mouse with the many shark encounters that happen throughout.
This is probably the closest that anyone has ever come to having an octopus as a friend or pet and the reason why the creator calls it his "teacher" is because the creature cured his disdain for film-making and inspired him to do great things again. Considering the amount of awards and accolades this thing has received, I would say that the octopus was a magnificent teacher indeed.
Should I watch it?
I think for people that enjoy nature documentaries, and especially something that isn't just done by everyone, that this is going to be a winner. Not only does it reveal stunning underwater environments and information about this creature that no one actually knew before but it also reveals something about humanity that you may not have really thought about. It's difficult to imagine a documentary making you feel sad, but that is precisely what happens here. This is a very well-done, powerful, and emotional ride, and I consider it to be one of the best nature documentaries ever made.
Due to the wide range of content on more and more digital platforms, one sometimes misses out on quality proposals because they go unnoticed in the face of the publicity given to the movies and series of the moment.
One of those many pieces of content is My Octopus Teacher which came to Netflix in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, and won the Oscar in 2021. The documentary managed to have an echo in traditional media, but for a short time, to then get lost in the immense catalog of good content that nobody knows about, that Netflix has.
My Octopus Techer is a documentary that shows us the unusual personal journey experienced by its protagonist, a documentarian who, worn out by work, seeks to reconnect with himself and with life, and achieves it thanks to the relationship that sets out with a female octopus that lives in a kelp forest near his home on the coast of South Africa.
Seeking to reconnect with himself through diving, our protagonist one day comes across an octopus with unusual behavior, which arouses his interest and he decides to start looking for it daily. Guided by curiosity, a relationship of mutual trust suddenly emerges between the octopus and the protagonist, allowing the filmmaker to reassess what is known about these amazing marine animals, which for many scientists are among the most intelligent on the planet.
The surprise of the discoveries, however, slowly gives way to what could be considered a friendship, and the protagonist rethinks his own life based on the "teachings" that the octopus gives him based on the way in which she adapts to the circumstances of her life, overcomes adversity and fulfills her life cycle.
The documentary features Emmy-nominated photography, an engaging and endearing story, and allows us to re-evaluate what we know about octopuses, and about ourselves. It's available on Netflix, and for those who are still hesitant to watch it, here's the trailer for the movie.

Son documentales de tipo informativo-educativo que llegan al gran público y que los disfrutamos como curiosidades de un mundo que, la mayor parte de las veces, nos resultan ajenos.
We are used to watching wildlife documentaries where man acts as a keen observer trying to capture the habits and relationships established between the different species in their different environments. They are informative-educational documentaries that reach the general public and we enjoy them as curiosities of a world that, most of the time, is alien to us.
Mi maestro el pulpo es un documental que rompe el esquema, en él, hombre y animal silvestre establecen una relación tan íntima en un medio poco convencional, para el humano, cómo lo es el mundo marino lo que hace más inverosímil tal relación.
My Octopus Teacher is a documentary that breaks the scheme, in it, man and wild animal establish such an intimate relationship in an unconventional environment, for humans, as the marine world is, which makes such a relationship even more unlikely.
Es una historia que, de muchas maneras, estamos acostumbrado a ver desde la imaginación y la creación humana a través de dibujos animados, humanizando los personajes. Sin embargo, en Mi maestro el pulpo nos encontramos con un film de escena reales, de vivencias en un ecosistema, no propiamente apto para humanos, lo que despierta admiración. Toda la producción es un gran logro por parte de este cineasta que narra su historia y experiencia con un molusco.
It is a story that, in many ways, we are used to see from the imagination and human creation through cartoons, humanizing the characters. However, in My Octopus Teacher we find a film of real scenes, of experiences in an ecosystem, not properly suitable for humans, which arouses admiration. Every production is a great achievement on the part of this filmmaker who narrates his story and experience with a mollusk.
Como toda buena historia tiene sus tres grandes momentos. Un preámbulo que nos contextualiza en la necesidad del protagonista, su momento de quiebre que lo lleva a replantearse la vida, un vacío interno que después de 20 años de trabajo no encuentra la motivación para seguir haciendo lo que tanto ama. Es retornando a su mundo de la niñez donde se reencuentra con lo que lo mueve y define, como dirían los japoneses encuentra su Ikigai. En el desarrollo de este proceso va estableciendo la relación con el pulpo.
La relación antes de consolidarse tienen sus encuentros y desencuentros y la narración va hallando sus recovecos para involucrarnos en ella y crear un toque de aprehensión y clímax donde entra en juego la lucha por la supervivencia llegando a un desenlace tan emotivo como natural.
Like any good story, it has its three great moments. A preamble that contextualizes us in the need of the protagonist, his moment of rupture that leads him to rethink his life, an inner emptiness that after 20 years of work does not find the motivation to continue doing what he loves so much. It is by returning to his childhood world where he finds what moves him and defines him, as the Japanese would say, he finds his Ikigai. In the development of this process he establishes a relationship with the octopus.
The relationship before consolidating has its encounters and misunderstandings and the narration finds its nooks and crannies to involve us in it and create a touch of apprehension and climax where the struggle for survival comes into play, reaching a denouement as emotional as it is natural.
Decirlo de esta forma puede sonar como muy elemental, sin embargo, hombre y animal van estrechando unos lazos donde sentimientos y emociones se mezclan para ofrecernos una gran enseñanza que tiene que ver no solo con las conductas que tenemos unos y otros sino en la necesidad afectiva que, parece ser, es propia de todo ser vivo y que existen innumerables maneras para comunicarlas, demostrando que lo que se requiere es paciencia, cariño, entrega para lograr ese acercamiento y abrir nuevas relaciones de insospechadas naturalezas.
To say it in this way may sound as very elementary, however, man and animal are tightening bonds where feelings and emotions are mixed to offer us a great teaching that has to do not only with the behaviors that we have each other but in the affective need that, it seems, is characteristic of every living being and that there are countless ways to communicate them, demonstrating that what is required is patience, affection, delivery to achieve this approach and open new relationships of unsuspected natures.

El documental “Mi maestro el pulpo” tiene un gran valor para la humanidad no solo por el conocimiento científico que aporta sino porque se adentra en un mundo de vínculos insospechados, lenguajes desconocidos pero comprensibles que realmente lo hacen merecedor del gran premio.
The documentary "My Octopus Teacher" has a great value for humanity not only because of the scientific knowledge it provides but also because it delves into a world of unsuspected links, unknown but understandable languages that really make it worthy of the great award.
