Despite the unremarkable title, My Policeman, this drama directed by Michael Grandage with an adapted screenplay by Ron Nyswaner (based on the novel by Bethan Roberts) has interesting elements. To begin with, the story is told in parallel in two stages. In other words, current events alternate with others that occurred at the end of the 1950s, so that the viewer has to put the story together a bit as if making a drawing of a person starting simultaneously with the hat and the shoes, addressing towards the central part to complete the work. In the present time, Tom, Marion and Patrick are older adults. The first two are married and Patrick is ill, which is why Marion puts him up at her house despite Tom's initial refusal, prompting the first questions, who are they? why didn't Tom want to receive patrick if they are supposed to be friends? how and where did they meet? why is Marion hosting Patrick? Doesn't he have more relatives? And that's when the flashbacks begin and the story begins to unravel.
A pesar del título poco llamativo, My Policeman, este drama dirigido por Michael Grandage con guión adaptado de Ron Nyswaner (basado en la novela de Bethan Roberts) tiene elementos interesantes. Para empezar, la historia se va contando de forma paralela en dos tiempos. Es decir, se van alternando los sucesos actuales con otros ocurridos a finales de los años cincuenta, de manera que el espectador tiene que ir armando la historia un poco como si realizase el dibujo de una persona empezando en simultáneo por el sombrero y los zapatos dirigiéndose hacia la parte central para culminar la labor. En la época actual, Tom, Marion y Patrick son adultos mayores. Los dos primeros están casados y Patrick está enfermo, razón por la cual Marion lo aloja en su casa a pesar de la negativa inicial de Tom, lo que origina las primeras preguntas, ¿quiénes son ellos? ¿por qué Tom no quería recibir a Patrick si se supone que son amigos? ¿cómo y dónde se conocieron? ¿por qué Marion aloja a Patrick? ¿acaso no tiene más familiares? Y es entonces cuando comienzan los flashbacks y se comienza a hilar la historia.
Tom (Harry Styles), Marion (Emma Corrin), and Patrick (David Dawson) met in the late 1950s. The first two when they began their adulthood and the third a little later. Tom was a policeman and Marion a school teacher. Being young and in love, wanting to see the world, they met Patrick, older than them, who worked as a museum curator.

Tom era policía y Marion una maestra de escuela. Siendo jóvenes y estando enamorados, con ganas de conocer el mundo, conocieron a Patrick, mayor que ellos, quien trabajaba como conservador de un museo.
Patrick's appearance changes everything. On the one hand, he is an older person, with an air of the world and a more refined knowledge of certain subjects that young lovers ignore. Patrick knows art, painting, opera, classical music, wine, and when the three begin to spend a lot of time together, the first thing Marion thinks is that maybe Patrick doesn't have many friends his age. Then the question is if maybe he's in love with Marion, don't they have similar interests? Isn't Patrick the one who invites them both to the opera and recitals even though Tom falls asleep at the performances? But the truth is different and if I dare to reveal it, it's not to ruin the surprise with a spoiler, because this fact is seen in the promotional trailer for the film: Patrick is homosexual and his romantic interest is not Marion, but Tom who is also gay.
La aparición de Patrick cambia todo. Por un lado se trata de una persona mayor, con aire de mundo y un conocimiento más refinado sobre ciertos temas que los jóvenes amantes ignoran. Patrick sabe de arte, de pintura, de ópera, de música clásica, de vinos, y cuando comienzan a pasar mucho tiempo juntos los tres, lo primero que piensa Marion es que quizá Patrick no tiene muchos amigos de su edad. Luego, la duda es si quizás esté enamorado de Marion, ¿acaso no tienen intereses similares? ¿no es Patrick quien los invita a ambos a la ópera y a los recitales a pesar de que Tom se queda dormido en las funciones? Pero la verdad es diferente y si me atrevo a revelarla no es para arruinar la sorpresa con un spoiler, pues este hecho se ve en el avance promocional de la película: Patrick es homosexual y su interés romántico no es Marion, sino Tom quien también es gay.
Let's remember: they are in post-war England, in the fifties. Homosexuality is condemned not only morally but also criminally (let's remember the case of Alan Turing) and those in charge of persecuting and capturing people with inappropriate sexual conduct are the police. And in the middle of this drama, Patrick, who is on the run from the police and has to hide his homosexuality from the law, falls in love with an officer who is also gay and who now has to live torn between his duty and his nature. Being a policeman and gay in those years was an important social contradiction and Tom decides to lead a double life: marrying Marion, he wants to have children, start a family; but he doesn't want to give Patrick up, or stop seeing him. At this point, while it's easy to sympathize with a relationship that was condemned by society for an unfair reason (we always ingratiate ourselves with tragic lovers), it's also easy to recognize that Tom was wrong to lie to Marion for so long. Gay or not, Tom was unfaithful to his wife and had a prolonged affair with someone else after marrying the woman he publicly claimed to love. That's cheating. And it's not okay.
Recordemos: están en la Inglaterra de la posguerra, en los años cincuenta. La homosexualidad es condenada no sólo moral sino también penalmente (recordemos el caso de Alan Turing) y los encargados de perseguir y capturar a las personas con conductas sexuales inapropiadas son los policías. Y en medio de este drama, Patrick que huye de la policía y tiene que ocultar su homosexualidad ante la ley se enamora de un oficial que también es gay y que ahora tiene que vivir dividido entre su deber y su naturaleza. Ser policía y gay en esos años era una contradicción social importante y Tom decide llevar una doble vida: casarse con Marion, quiere tener hijos, formar una familia; pero no quiere renunciar a Patrick, ni dejar de verlo. En este punto, si bien es fácil sentir simpatía por una relación que estaba condenada por la sociedad por un motivo injusto (siempre nos congraciamos con los enamorados trágicos) también se reconoce que Tom actuó mal mintiéndole a Marion durante tanto tiempo. Gay o no, Tom le fue infiel a su esposa y tuvo un prolongado affair con otra persona después de haberse casado con la mujer que decía publicamente amar. Eso es engañar. Y no está bien.
Generally speaking, the film is well done. It's a romantic drama, part of the story is set in a past that is colorful on screen, the acting is good, the romantic and erotic scenes between Tom and Patrick are both passionate and tense. However, I think there are mistakes in the script, why is Marion surprised to read Patrick's diary if parts of that same diary she had already heard it read fifty years before? Patrick and Tom's secret was no longer a secret for her, so that shock can be felt by the public (who still doesn't know it), but not by a character who already knew the truth. And like that, there are a couple more details that take points away from the story originally written by Bethan Roberts and that is already available on Amazon Prime Video, have any of you already seen it? En términos generales, la película está bien hecha. Es un drama romántico, una parte de la historia se ambienta en un pasado que resulta vistoso en la pantalla, las actuaciones son buenas, las escenas románticas y eróticas entre Tom y Patrick son a la vez apasionadas y tensas. Sin embargo, creo que hay errores en el guión, ¿por qué se sorprende Marion al leer el diario de Patrick si partes de ese mismo diario ya lo había oído leer cincuenta años antes? El secreto de Patrick y Tom ya no era ningún secreto para ella, entonces ese shock lo puede tener el público (que aún no lo sabe), pero no un personaje que ya conocía la verdad. Y como ese hay un par de detalles más que le quitan puntos a la historia originalmente escrita por Bethan Roberts y que ya se encuentra disponible en Amazon Prime Video, ¿alguno de ustedes ya la ha visto?
