My Stepmother Is An Alien came out in 1988 during a stretch where Dan Aykroyd had become a star, making several movies where he was the lead. His best parts were where he played nerdy, misunderstood scientists. Dan Aykroyd plays nerdy, misunderstood scientist very well.

In this one, he is trying to send a signal out of the solar system. Things go wrong and his signal leaves the galaxy. He’s fired and shortly a beautiful woman shows up, seeking his attention. Turns out that she is an alien from a planet in the galaxy his signal went to and she is there to get him to recreate to save her world. Hijinks ensue.

Kim Basinger is the alien. Alyson Hannigan is his daughter and Jim Lovitz is his brother.

I haven’t seen this one since 1988 so I didn’t know what to think of it as I revisited for the first time in thirty years. It’s got a silly charm though that was kind of cute.

    The Good...

Like I said, it had a nice charm. Aykroyd and Basinger had an interesting and fun chemistry and some funny lines.

    It was sweet.

    The Not So Good...

Jon Lovitz was sort of grating after a while.

It was fun. I liked it.
