Night Always Comes (2025) || Dark, Raw and Deeply Human@teknon279d
Some films entertain you, some thrill you and then there are the ones that just sit heavy in your chest even after the credits roll. This film belongs to that last category. It’s not the kind of movie you throw on casually. It’s the kind that makes you stare at the screen a little longer than you meant to, thinking about how unfair life can be and how people keep fighting anyway.
Synopsis
The story follows Lynette (played with raw ferocity by Vanessa Kirby), a woman living on the margins of Portland, Oregon. She’s desperate to scrape together enough money to buy the house she’s been renting before developers swoop in and take it. And over the course of one long, restless night, she goes around the city. One full of broken promises, shady characters, and of course old wounds.
My Review and Rating
This movie really captures desperation at its core. Lynette comes off as a heroine because she’s trying to help her family by getting the house so they’re not thrown out into the street but she’s not the typical heroine anyway. She’s messy and bruised and angry, but all the things she does are powered by the hope of having stability; a home, maybe a chance to break the cycle, something better than just scraping by. Even when her choices aren’t nice ones but you understand them. I found myself rooting for her the way you root for someone you know isn’t perfect but deserves a break anyway.
Performance wise, Vanessa Kirby carries this film. I mean she gives Lynette a kind of nervous energy, like she’s one step from breaking but still forcing herself to keep moving. Every look or pause feels layered. The supporting cast adds grit, but make no mistake, this is her show.
The atmosphere is equally gripping. It felt even better because I watched this in the wee hours of the morning. Portland is shot as both familiar and alien. The neon bleeding into shadows, rain-soaked streets that feel claustrophobic, and then there’s this mood that just makes you feel the weight of every locked door Lynette knocks on.
I’ll warn you ahead that this isn’t a slick, popcorn kind of movie. The pacing can feel uneven, lingering longer than you’d expect in some scenes. And the story itself doesn’t give easy resolutions. Not sure it was made to hand anyone comfort. That said, if you go in expecting a very nice, triumphant ending, you’ll be let down. But if you accept the roughness as part of the design, it makes sense.
This one is going to stick with me a little longer because at its heart, it’s a film about survival. It’s not the conventional Hollywood kind with explosions, but the quiet, relentless kind where Lynette’s fight to secure a home for herself and her family feels painfully real, and I couldn’t shake the thought of how many people outside the theater are living that same battle.
This film isn’t an easy watch but it’s a powerful one. It’s kind of a reminder that for some, “making it” isn’t about glory but about getting through the night with something to hold onto.
Rating: 8/10
PS: the movie is based on Willy Vlautin’s novel of the same name. I should add the book to my to-read list to compare how well they carried the story.
Hello Movies & Tv cinephile friends, I hope you are doing well. Yesterday I watched the new movie Night Always Comes a thriller released on Netflix full of drama and a very emotional story in the midst of economic deprivation and the possible lack of losing a place in which the protagonist wants to keep for her mother and older brother who has Down Syndrome. I didn't have much information about this movie but I have seen quite a few people writing their reviews about it and letting me know what they thought when watching it, I didn't really love it but it does keep you intrigued. So I invite you to read my review of Night Always Comes.
The plot directly follows Lynette a young woman who in one day must make important decisions to keep the place where she lives with her mother and brother with a special condition. She is desperate because she must raise $25,000 to be able to keep the house where she lives, which the owner is about to sell. It is not only the pressure of having to leave the place where she has grown up but also the loss of the stability she wants to give to her family and especially to her brother who is for her a person who is worth any sacrifice in order to see him well. So in one night she will take risky decisions and even attempt against her own integrity and her own fears in order to get the money as soon as possible, leading her to wonder many times if so much effort is necessary.
The film was directed by Benjamin Caron based on the novel of the same name by Willy Vlautin and was released this year on Netflix. It features the performance of Vanessa Kirby as Lynette where she stands out for demonstrating in a character the social and human questioning before a situation that unleashes despair in her, while she decides that she must get the money as quickly as possible, she only has one day and it is as if many happen during the two hours of film, her performance was pretty good and you could notice the desperation of the character before such a situation, taking her to her own past where she got money by selling her body and even where she used drug use.
Doreen (Jennifer Jason Leigh), is the mother of Lynette and her older brother Kenny (Zack Gottsagen), who has Down syndrome, despite knowing that she has some responsibility in that she must take care of her son for having a condition, she really shows no interest in giving ideas or doing something positive to avoid being evicted from the house, while Lynette risks more than she should she simply thinks selfishly and even having some of the money she spends it for her own tastes. I feel she was the character I hated the most even though there are several that are secondary characters that I disliked.
The story is filmed in a single night, which maintains the state of tension and loss of emotional stability of the protagonist Lynette, I feel that she really from a very young age looked for a way to make her family well despite having to go over her own values and dignity. It is not very easy to be in her situation and see what you could stay in the street especially having a family member with a condition, Kenny's role as the brother was so sincere and open how people with this syndrome are, even though at some point he was in danger his own innocence did not make him see the seriousness of the reality they were living.
There are scenes where we can see the action within the film, including moments of escapes, sexual scenes, robberies, violence and drugs. Perhaps this is what gives the most serious touch to the situation, especially because we see that the protagonist has been struggling from a very young age with the burden of being the example and support for her own family, many times she needed that hug from her mother that never came and that also hurt her, having to accept that many things can not be changed and in the process seek the welfare of his brother above all things, that showed in her the great responsibility and love she felt towards her family even though the decisions she made were not the right ones but I do not judge her, because in such a serious situation it is difficult to think clearly.
It's not a story I would watch again because after a while it got a bit slow and I didn't have a great impression of the ending, I really felt they could have made the ending different, how to leave a more important message than just the way they developed it but that's my opinion though, I think it's a story with good actors and with a main actress who gave her all to make you feel the desperation and the lack of support in situations like these, I felt very sad to see everything she had to do to be able to keep her family together and give them stability, losing herself in the process and not seeing that maybe in the end the best thing was to let everyone take the responsibility that corresponded to them. I hope you can watch this movie and if you already have, leave me your comments about what you thought 👀.

Vanessa Kirby is an actress who has been making waves lately with her roles, her latest being in "Fantastic Four." This is very common when any actor suddenly experiences these peaks in popularity, where they're suddenly everywhere with two or more films at the same time, and in this case, it doesn't bother me because Vanessa is an extraordinary actress who's a joy to watch on screen. In this film released by Netflix, she's the center of everything, an intense and tension-filled drama where we see what she's truly made of to get what she so desperately needs.
Lynette (Kirby) is a woman who apparently hasn't fared very well in life (her backstory is quite dense), so she's currently paying the price. She lives with her mother and brother. The problem here is that they're about to lose their house, something that doesn't seem to bother her much. In order to continue living where they've been, they need to take out a loan, and to do so, they have to pay 25,000 dollars. As I told you, her mother isn't very interested in the situation, so she leaves the entire burden on Lynette; the problem? She needs that money by first thing tomorrow morning, and it's 6 p.m. This is where this woman's odyssey begins.
I won't mention her brother because he has a condition (Down syndrome), which makes the situation even more traumatic and emotional for Lynette. From here on, we'll see everything this woman is willing to do for her future and that of her brother; after all, he's the only one she cares about. As I said, her past is very murky, which allows her to use connections on the street to achieve her goal. Basically, the plot is a race against time; in fact, the film itself makes this clear by setting the time of each event in each scene. This only adds to the viewer's tension, as the question of whether she'll finally get all the money she needs is latent.
The premise is very powerful: a desperate woman who has little more than 12 hours, at night, to get a lot of money on the streets of Portland. These are the times when people are the least helpful; everyone calls themselves friends until a pressing situation like this one arises, something Lynette will experience firsthand. The snowball begins to grow when she's left alone in front of a safe; from here, everything goes downhill in terms of danger and desperation. The plot never gets boring because something is always happening. Lynette has to improvise a lot on the fly because things don't go as she expects, which puts her life in serious danger more than once, which ultimately keeps the film's tension from dropping.
Lynette is portrayed as a woman who seemingly can handle anything (she has two jobs and isn't fooled by anyone), but deep down, she's deeply vulnerable because of everything she went through in her adolescence/young adulthood. There's also the element of desperation that makes her do unimaginable things. In fact, I'm truly amazed at how far she becomes and the things she goes through in just a few hours. Add to this the whole setting. It's a very dark environment where it's made very clear that the streets aren't a safe place, much less the people. There's a lot of betrayal and people trying to be clever. In the end, if you go in with a clear objective, I imagine you're kind of invincible (I suppose).
Vanessa Kirby is a great actress, as she proves here. She dazzles throughout the entire film. At times, it seems as though she's too good an actress for the scenes she's assigned to play, as if she falls short. The plot falls a bit short, with many gaps, but she makes it work. It's a film to watch on a day when there isn't much to see. I give it a 6/10. The tension that is felt at times is interesting; I also think it could have been much better than it was. It's less than two hours long and you can find it on Netflix. I've left the trailer below.
›Night Always Comes (2025) Review: A Gripping Tale of Desperation@papamogambo316d
I recently watched a movie on Netflix titled Night Always Comes. This movie features Vanessa. You might have seen Vanessa previously in Marvel’s Sue Storm role. We have also seen her in Tom Cruise’s Mission Impossible movies.
Story Overview
This movie is a crime drama thriller, in which we get to see Vanessa’s story, where she wants to buy a house. If she doesn’t buy a house soon, she will lose custody of her brother. Her brother is mentally and physically disabled. There’s a specific term for this, which I’m forgetting right now. Aamir Khan’s movie also covered a similar theme.
Vanessa’s brother has physical and mental disabilities, which is why, to keep his custody, she needs to have at least a house. She had worked hard and saved money for this, but her mother spent all that money on a car. Now, she has only one day left. She must arrange the money somehow, or she will lose her brother’s custody forever.
How she manages to arrange the money is what you’ll see in the movie. To gather the funds, she resorts to various methods. Because of this, the movie becomes an adult film. You cannot watch it with family. However, it doesn’t show too much of that content. For those who are fans of such content, this movie isn’t for you.
What did I think of the movie?
The most interesting part for me was when Vanessa is ready to do anything for money. She has a specific goal and will do anything to achieve it. But it’s shown in a very realistic way. There’s no excessive motivation or exaggeration.
It shows how dark things can get in America, portrayed from a girl’s perspective. While trying to fix things, how she gets trapped deeper into trouble is depicted very well in the movie.
Therefore, I’d say it’s a decent story. Not overly amazing, but definitely worth watching once. If you like crime thriller movies, this is for you. By crime thriller, I mean you won’t see too much crime. There’s hardly any action in it.
Mainly, you’ll see drama. The pain and helplessness of a girl are portrayed. It also shows, both indirectly and directly, what’s happening in America very well.
Acting & Performance
All the actors’ performances were impressive to me. Especially Vanessa, whose character is the main focus. Vanessa has done remarkable acting. In terms of production value and acting, this movie is great.
Final Verdict
My final verdict is that it’s a one-time watch movie, through which you can pass your time well. I liked the movie decently. It was engaging from start to finish. Therefore, I’d rate this movie 7 out of 10.
