    Introduction

"Laugh and the world laughs with you. Weep and you weep alone"

This phrase, which is repeated by the protagonist numerous times, captures the essence of a manga-inspired work whose originality lies less in the plot (which includes an endless examination of the origins of the spirit of vengeance and a frantic search for the significance and justification of it) and more in the mise-en-scène, a skilled mixing of hyperrealism and nonsensicality where the alternation of tears and blood keep the viewer glued to his chair for all the duration of the movie.

    Revenge

Oh Dae-su is unsure of why someone would wish to keep him imprisoned for such a long time, and he is unsure of when and if his imprisonment would end. This time has such an experiential value that it leaves the protagonist's body with an imprinted trauma. The main character's body transforms; he has tattoos on his hands that indicate the passage of time; he has scars from a failed suicide attempt; and he starts working out in an effort to transform his slender physique into a fighter capable of facing anything. The fifteen years drastically alter Dae-su, leaving society with a totally different individual who is not necessarily better than the egotistical, drunken employee we are familiar with from the prologue: It is constantly remarked that Dae-su appears like a monster, a type of creation created by a Dr. Frankenstein whose motives are unclear. Once free, Dae-su walks like a blank-eyed automaton and hardly talks; his hair is frizzy and disordered. But after being humiliated and traumatized, Dae-su develops into a figure that other people can find fascinating. The movie embodies the concept of "Han", which permeates Korean culture and denotes a sense of pain, suffering, as well as resentment and grudge, and whose original nucleus in a colonialist stereotype dating back to the era of Japanese domination. Although this emotion is typically considered passive, in "Old Boy," it causes an indignant response, and Dae-su's parable brilliantly captures a personality trait that is today thought to be innate to Koreans.

    Good and Evil

Thanks to a clockwork screenplay that channels a series of twists and turns, some of which are truly shocking and brutal, until the epilogue, Oldboy is a box, a Pandora's box that when opened can reveal the worst fears, a clever and cruel interlocking game that has revolutionized the entire cinematic thriller panorama. A complex and Machiavellian revenge drama in which the 'villain' himself exhibits motivations and reasons that are perhaps aggravated but not wholly inexplicable, all connected to a long-forgotten secret from the past that is progressively exposed. Unsustainable boulders for the two rivals to carry, providing a 360-degree view of good and evil, without black or white but with a varied shade of grey that accurately captures the most human motivations. The choice of the epilogue in this revenge/redemption story is intriguing; it increases awareness more in the audience than in the protagonist, giving viewers more food for thought on subjects that are undoubtedly complicated psychologically. And while some sequences may upset the stomachs of someone,  the violence, which is a dominating and important element here,  hurts more from an introspective point of view than from a physical/visual one. Oldboy is an intense journey into the darkest corners of the human soul, accompanied by a score that both fascinates and unnerves. It flawlessly combines the action thriller element with a dramatic charge of unparalleled power, shocking and conquering, bewitching and destroying, a rapacious predator ready to leave victims in its path, in an inferno of rage and pain that perhaps only oblivion can finally erase.

    Plot

Oh Dae-su is kidnapped after being arrested for public drunkenness. Dae-su finds himself in a kind of tiny cell apartment when he awakens, complete with a bed, a bathroom, and an outdated TV. He learns through a media report about the murder of his wife that he is the suspect, leaving him trapped and devastated. Days, weeks, and months pass in between. Dae-su harbors resentment, rage, and insanity year after year in between failed suicide attempts and impossible escape plots. Then, one day, fifteen years later, he gets released.

    Conclusion

Old Boy, the film that first made Park Chan-wook's brilliance known to the world, is a must-watch for everyone who likes this genre of movies. The director and script do an amazing job of guiding the viewer through Dae-Su's suffering. Old Boy, which continues to set the bar for revenge movies, does not currently appear to have aged. a genuine work of modern art.

  2. Cine TV Contest #35 - A Villain without Morals or Conscience Kyung Chul.@nbarrios671347d

A villain is a person who generally acts in a dastardly and cruel way with a psychopathic personality.

Movies are full of them: Lord Valdemort (Harry Potter), Hanibal Lecter (Silence of the Lambs), Annie Wilkes (Misery), Darth Vader (Star Wars), The Joker (Batman), Hans Gruber (Die Hard), Damien (The Prophecy) and countless other characters.

The importance of villains is that without them there would be no reason for the protagonist to act heroically, the villain confuses and seduces, also reflects on screen all the evil that the viewer represses.

There is a 2010 film called I Saw the Devil from South Korea directed by Jee-woon Kim that at the time left me in a state of shock, and even now has the power to do this, given its high doses of violence.

In this film we see a psychopath who has in check the Korean police who kills for the pure pleasure of killing, does not stop to think about the victims, he does not care if they are women or children, old or young, and also does it with an excessive cruelty. But one day he meets the daughter of a retired police chief, who is also the fiancée of a secret agent, who will not stop until he finishes him off by all means.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHgqp9tqPk4)

Kyung Chul is a single father with a stable job and a house of his own. But inside him lurks a shadowy psychopath representative of pure evil. He smokes as if he were possessed, drinks like a maniac and insults constantly. The human race means nothing to him.

The actor who plays this diabolical villain is Choi Min-sik (star of the original and highly recommended Old Boy), his performance is really sublime, showing us a terrifying look, seeing his character produces animosity, it is as if it were an avatar of the devil.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6QvqHloB4k)

This evil villain makes his antagonist Kim Soo-hyeon, an agent of the NIS (Korean Intelligence Service), enter the side of darkness, of evil because of his desire for revenge. This role is played by Lee Byung-hun who masterfully plays the villain, although he is often inexpressive but only with his eyes he manages to convey the sadness and despair he feels.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dvTa2rc9nw0)

Kyung Chul manages to inflict pain on the agent's soul, and the agent, feeling the urge to make the villain suffer the same pain he has caused, bludgeons, releases and returns to pursue the killer again and again. This provoked vengeance turns the avenger into a being as dangerous as the killer himself, and although much pain is inflicted on the criminal, the avenger's soul never seems satiated.

In this film, the devil turns the hero of the film into a character as evil and immoral as he is, and this to me is a perfect example of evil, of villainy, even though we have seen in the film many atrocities when these two characters come face to face the devil himself can be sympathetic, and the most perfect man on earth can seem a terrible bad guy, where these two extremes are almost equal, and, without words show us that evil ends up begetting evil.

    [Source](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYzfTBKHgZw)

At no time would I want to meet any of these characters given the high level of evil projected by the villain of the film, and how contaminated with anger and violence is our supposed hero.

This Korean cinema is very different from what we are used to see, often surpassing Hollywood cinema in content, action and violence. This is already a cult film and in this case at least for me, this is one of the villains that has given me more fear, for the human of his reactions and for showing low passions that contaminate another human being, activating unsuspected levels of evil given the thirst for revenge that is generated in a hero who after all is the same as the villain of the film.

This is my participation in the initiative Cine TV Contest #35 - Favorite Film Villain Link Here.

    Good luck to the participants.

  3. Oldboy: One of the best South Korean movies in suspense and drama (2003) Review [ENG - Esp]@stairway2heaven1561d

The first time I saw this movie in mid 2018, it was due to the personal recommendation of a Youtuber who generated or made video game content, but in that video in question he was playing various topics with his subscribers (it was an interactive live back then) while interacting with them, and he recommended this movie when they addressed the aspect of cinema or series, so well I decided to give it a chance, since he recommended it and gave a facial reaction not only something murky but also of "what the fuck did I just see" well personally I interpreted it that way, so the next day I decided to give it a chance and watch it in the evenings.

After watching it let me tell you, I don't blame him at all for making that face when talking about this movie at the time and now I understood everything, you see there are many aspects that I liked a lot and how it was approached mainly the choreography, the theme and the suspense, the violence can become too graphic and above all "why" things happen to him or in this case to our protagonist in question and why everything happened that had to happen but I will touch these points calmly later, so others and gentlemen this time I bring you Oldboy.

Before I begin to touch the highlights that make up the film in a comprehensive manner, I must say and I think this is the first time I say this in the various reviews that I have come to do, whether animated series or movies, and is that this film in question I do not feel that it is for everyone or for very sensitive people, and I do not mean only by the strong scenes of fighting, the symbology involved in the conduct of our protagonist and others, or other secondary characters or the mental or psychological psyche or however you want to call it, which are clearly things that will be present and I will not exaggerate are not excessively and grotesque in a very graphic way, but rather by the way it unfolds and intertwines everything part by part until the end, I feel that there are two sides those people who saw it and loved it or hated it I include myself in being in a middle ground the truth, strange as it sounds I like certain aspects but hate others I will only say that, if you ask me.

If in such case you are a more rebellious person or stronger to topics and very sensitive issues that for others, that can not get to take very well I invite you to give it a chance and draw your conclusions with all this, personally despite the warning and opinion that I said a moment ago, for me it is a great South Korean film touching strong and quite questionable and visceral themes, apparently this director is a guy who likes to meddle a lot in psychological or mental issues, and dig a lot and develop from there to use the strongest and deepest of those points and take advantage of them in a negative way in suspense, drama or horror.

The film enjoys a good choreography and acting by the actors, mainly in my opinion in the combat scenes, which there is a particular scene that looks in a linear way that for me, was very cool and the best you will see what I mean when you see it, on the part of the other conflicts that end in fights are not bad and you can get to notice the fluidity in that section, the performances at this point are very good, each actor in my opinion did a great job mainly our main character, showing us as viewers the helplessness, he felt for having to go through all this living without knowing exactly why this was happening and to us as viewers as time passes is a doubt that is fed over time and we also want answers he knows how to convey all this, it made me very anxious about why all this was happening at the time.

We are immersed in a muted atmosphere much of the time or gloomy accompanied by a melancholic factor and doubt and uncertainty, as well as revenge for our protagonist which is very consistent with the plot in question. As I mentioned it is a film that at first instance I do not feel that it is for everyone, of course there are much worse current films and more of South Korea and although this is a film of 2003, until today that have been presented other films a little stronger does not cease to be raw and touch very sensitive points, beyond this by the sections that I mentioned above is good as far as it goes and keeps you under a great doubt and suspense before the situation of the main character in question, and even a secondary that has much weight and a great relevance.

And with this ends this review in question, I hope you enjoyed the reading and thanks for getting to this point, you are warned to see the movie hahaha I am not responsible, thanks for getting here and until next time.

  4. Oldboy 2003- An unforgettable film that portrays revenge on the other side of the review ESP/ENG@kapitanrosomak1820d

    64B14B26-778C-4817-8D8E-696674202B04.jpeg

There were many movies about revenge in the cinema, some old paths that you have to avenge someone and the movie was based on how death wish others are extraordinary stories. Oldboy is such a movie.

The story of every revenge leads to the abyss. The movie begins when Oh Dae-su is kidnapped one day in 1988. He could not even say goodbye to his wife and little daughter. From now on, his life is in a small room with a TV set. This is where he learns what is currently happening in the world, but he cannot figure out why he was kidnapped and is not tortured, he only sits in a room with a small TV set. After 15 years, it is suddenly released in a quite specific way while being in a suitcase. Oh Dae-su, who is 15 years older, decides to find the perpetrators who locked him up and took his life and his wife. When it seems that Oh Dae-su is completely free, he receives a mysterious call from a stranger and a bundle of money. Things get even weirder when someone calls the number and offers to reveal to them why they were kidnapped if they found him within 5 days. A lot is complicated, but the caller knows from the beginning how to play with OhDaesu, giving him instructions every now and then to follow the string to the lion's cavity.

The film perfectly shows revenge, as a viewer we think that the whole film is based on the revenge of the main character, and the finale turns everything over 180 degrees, adding an extraordinary amount of depth.

    4976BF96-133F-4937-9DC9-CBF23E4084DD.jpeg

How much we are able to do to take revenge on this question I am trying to answer the film in its slightly twisted way. The main character is so lost in finding this perpetrator that he does not even see that he has fallen into a trap from which he will never come out.

This is the only film that teaches that revenge will never bring satisfaction, and we will always feel bad with it. Strong cinema, some scenes downright shocking, but that's how it was supposed to be.

The viewer was to be surprised from the beginning to the end and helplessly watching the main character get into worse and worse trouble at his own request. The film is great, but the finale shows all the artistry, giving us an amazing work full of sad, pathos and references.

    41048EFE-1B87-4F19-A91B-7FF89F3C3395.jpeg

It is a film that has become a cult movie not because of brutality, but how the story is led, how the hero wants love, revenge, normality, and when we get to the finale, we do not know who to sympathize with, which side was in a worse situation and which revenge hurt more.

The film Chan-wook Park is a work that is simply surprising in its simplicity, yet extremely meaningful. The music that is played here soothes all the tones of brutality. This is a movie that works from the very first minutes, even the action scenes are made so that we watch the movie all the time in shock (the cult scene with a hammer)

Every aspect of this movie is a small masterpiece, so the Americans decided to make their own version, but it lacked this the poetry of this melancholy, giving an action movie without much revelation.

It is this movie that we will think after many years and we will have it somewhere deep in our head when we think about some revenge, because every revenge always has two ends.

    B0EDD32D-875B-496D-AAC7-2876715B147B.jpeg

When it comes to acting it is amazing, every person plays here with such commitment that it's hard to believe that this is just a movie.

The film has no disadvantages, although they may depend on how we receive the film and the final. 10/10 although in this case it is definitely too low grade

  5. Oldboy (Korean): hands down one of the best@gooddream2948d

This was the first Korean movie that I had ever seen and I have been relatively hooked on Korean cinema ever since. Oldboy is the second in the Vengeance Trilogy and just like in the original star wars films from the 80's, the 2nd one was the best.

    69503a39b0e2e829b2bbd4ebeebe0727.jpg

It stars a team of very talented actors including my personal favorite, Choi Min-sik.

    05b81ee2e2494aa38cabb847bd785ce9.jpg

You don't need to just take my word for Choi Min-sik's talent though, as he is widely regarded as one of the best actors in Korea of all time. He spends a great deal of the time in "Oldboy" acting alone, which most actors would agree is the most difficult type of acting to do (Just ask Tom Hanks or James Franco.)

Choi Min-sik plays Oh Dae-su, who starts the film out drunk and getting bailed out of jail by a friend. Then while attempting to call his daughter at a pay phone he is inexplicably kidnapped and is being held prisoner in what appears to be a hotel room. He spends years in this cell and is never told why he is here and he never has any other contact with other people. He spends his time watching TV and of course, trying to escape.

He is eventually released and then spends his time trying to find his captors and also his daughter. I hesitate to tell much more because like most Korean films there are surprise moments that if someone tells you about it kind of ruins the whole film. Even the trailer is extremely vague for the same reason.

I don't want to talk about the USA remake of this movie directed by Spike Lee because it really gets on my nerves when Hollywood remakes epic films and then ruins them. Watch the Korean one, even though you will have to read it. The overdubbed version of it is dumb, because so much of the emotion is conveyed in the actor's voices, even if you don't understand the words.

Overall, this movie started a wonderful habit in my life because before watching it I have never considered watching Korean movies or even knew how great they were. This one is ranked by many major publications as being one of the top 100 movies ever made. CNN ranked it in the "top ten Asian movies of all time."

If you only take one piece of film advice from me ever it would be to watch this movie. I can find no flaws in it at all.

    10 / 10
