   Hola amigos de la comunidad de Movies & Tv, espero se encuentren muy bien el día de hoy. Estuve buscando películas y series para ver y me salieron unas cuantas en la red social Tumblr, entre ellas estaba una que llamo mi atención porque la protagonista es Saoirse Ronan y quién tiene un gran listado de películas bastante buenas dónde se destaca por ser una actriz versátil y que cada papel que le es otorgado lo realiza de forma impecable. Está película se llama En la playa de Chesil o en inglés On Chesil Beach, es del año 2017 y está basada en un libro escrito por Ian McEwan quien también formó parte del guión de la película. Es una película no muy conocida pero bastante interesante de ver y que toca temas sobre las relaciones y los conflictos propios como seres humanos.

I was looking for movies and series to watch and I got a few on the social network Tumblr, among them was one that caught my attention because the protagonist is Saoirse Ronan and who has a great list of pretty good movies where she stands out as a versatile actress and that each role that is given to her is done impeccably. This movie is called On Chesil Beach, is from 2017 and is based on a book written by Ian McEwan who was also part of the screenplay of the film. It is a film not very well known but quite interesting to watch and that touches on issues about relationships and conflicts as human beings.

   Está historia comienza en Inglaterra en el año 1962, dónde una joven llamada Florence (Saoirse Ronan) quien viene de una familia de altos recursos y con una educación bastante estricta, además de tener un gran talento musical como violinista pasión que la hace sentir llena de vida y con un propósito. Siendo una mujer tan joven y bastante madura para su edad nunca ha tenido una relación formal o sentimental con un hombre debido a que piensa que no ha encontrado a la persona indicada para hacer su vida junto a él, además de tener un poco de presión por sus padres quienes son personas distinguidas y que desean para su hija un buen partido.

   This story begins in England in 1962, where a young woman named Florence (Saoirse Ronan) who comes from a family of high resources and with a fairly strict education, besides having a great musical talent as a violinist passion that makes her feel full of life and with a purpose. Being such a young woman and quite mature for her age she has never had a formal or sentimental relationship with a man because she thinks she has not found the right person to make her life with him, besides having a little pressure from her parents who are distinguished people and who want for their daughter a good match.

   Con el pasar del tiempo de manera casual Florence conoce a un joven llamado Edward quien es un entusiasta de la lectura y de la historia además de que le apasiona la naturaleza y quién no ha tenido una vida fácil por ser de clase media. Casi al instante de conocerse empiezan una relación, ambos se encuentran muy entusiasmados por crear un vínculo que sea duradero y que puedan llegar a formar una familia. Pero la familia de Florence no está muy feliz de que su hija esté con un joven que no es del mismo estrato social que ellos, aún así Florence insiste en querer tener una relación con Edward que además en un joven bastante inteligente y la trata con gentileza.

   As time goes by, by chance Florence meets a young man named Edward who is a reading and history enthusiast and is passionate about nature and who has not had an easy life because he is middle class. Almost as soon as they meet they begin a relationship, both are very excited about creating a lasting bond and starting a family. But Florence's family is not very happy that their daughter is with a young man who is not from the same social stratum as them, yet Florence insists on wanting to have a relationship with Edward who is also a very intelligent young man and treats her with kindness.

   Aunque todo parece ir muy bien desde el comienzo, la relación empieza a tener ciertos inconvenientes entre ellos está el pasado de Edward dónde tuvo que ver sufrir a su madre un accidente que la dejo mentalmente inestable y quién tiene ciertos comportamientos inadecuados además de que no suele recordar algunas veces cosas tan simples como cuál es el trabajo de su esposo o quien es la pareja de Edward, esto a Edward le genera mucha ansiedad y además tristeza porque nadie quisiera ver a su madre en un estado tan deplorable.

   Por otro lado está la historia de vida de Florence quien creció con dos padres letrados y quienes siempre han querido que ella sea una mujer que pueda realizarse en la vida pero que también tenga una pareja que este a su altura, además tiene una hermana menor que la ve como su ejemplo a seguir sintiendo que esto puede causarle estrés a Florence por querer quedar bien con su familia, con sus amigos y con su pareja y no cometer ningún tipo de error. Aunque ella siempre es una persona artística y risueña siente que le falta ese complemento a su vida amorosa y desea poder estar con Edward o eso es lo que pensaba al comienzo de la relación antes de que se volviera más formal.

   On the other hand is the life story of Florence who grew up with two literate parents and who have always wanted her to be a woman who can be fulfilled in life but also have a partner who is up to her, also has a younger sister who sees her as her example to follow feeling that this can cause stress to Florence for wanting to look good with her family, with her friends and with her partner and not make any mistakes. Although she is always an artistic and giggly person she feels that she lacks that complement to her love life and wishes she could be with Edward or so she thought at the beginning of the relationship before it became more formal.

   Rápidamente Edward y Florence contraen matrimonio y empiezan a darse cuenta de que la vida como pareja es muy diferente a cuando empiezas a conocer a una persona y sales con ella pero no está la presión de una vida juntos y de manera más formal. Y allí es que empiezan los problemas, sobre todo en su noche de bodas, ambos son inexpertos en cuanto al sexo y pasan un momento bastante incómodo donde se puede notar que es la primera vez que ambos están en esa situación con otra persona, aunque tratan de que sea lo más bonito y natural posible, las cosas no terminan bien y debido a su primera noche juntos empiezan a ver problemas que no imaginaban que iban a tener por el supuesto amor que se tenían.

   Quickly Edward and Florence get married and begin to realize that life as a couple is very different from when you start to get to know a person and date them but there is not the pressure of a life together and in a more formal way. And there is where the problems begin, especially on their wedding night, both are inexperienced when it comes to sex and have a very awkward moment where you can tell that it is the first time that both are in that situation with another person, although they try to make it as nice and natural as possible, things do not end well and because of their first night together they begin to see problems that they did not imagine they would have because of the supposed love they had for each other.

   En esta historia de romance, drama y música podemos ver cómo dos personas que empiezan a conocerse y que rápidamente se comprometen y se casan no ven desde el comienzo que el tener una relación implica algo más que el amor, que posiblemente ambos segados por los momentos románticos que vivieron al comienzo de la relación no supieron entablar una conversación sobre sus historias de vida y sobre que esperaban con el hecho de casarse. Podemos ver que a pesar de que ambos tienen mucho respeto y amor por el otro, son completamente inexpertos en el tema de las relaciones y también tienen algunos asuntos emocionales que nunca han podido expresar de alguna manera lo que les ocasiona el miedo a fallar en la relación, a su primera experiencia sexual y también el miedo a ver cómo fue su proceso de crecimiento y desarrollo que tiene mucho que ver en la manera en que después los personajes se comportan.

   In this story of romance, drama and music we can see how two people who begin to know each other and quickly get engaged and married do not see from the beginning that having a relationship implies something more than love, that possibly both mowed down by the romantic moments they lived at the beginning of the relationship did not know how to engage in a conversation about their life stories and what they expected with the fact of getting married. We can see that even though they both have a lot of respect and love for each other, they are completely inexperienced in the subject of relationships and also have some emotional issues that they have never been able to express in some way which causes them to be afraid of failing in the relationship, of their first sexual experience and also the fear of seeing how their process of growth and development was which has a lot to do with the way the characters behave later on.

   Es una película que no fue de mis favoritas al verla, la verdad tenía ganas de verla por Saoirse Ronan ya que es una excelente actriz y que en esta película también tiene un buen desempeño actoral, además el protagonista que lo interpreta Billy Howle también tiene una buena manera de expresar esas frustraciones de su papel y eso es una de las cosas que me gustaron de la película, además la puesta en escena en la playa de Chesil es una maravilla visualmente y hace que los momentos en los que ellos están en la playa se sientan más íntimos y te adentres más en la historia de los personajes y sus conflictos.

   It is a movie that was not one of my favorites when I saw it, I really wanted to see it because of Saoirse Ronan, she is an excellent actress and in this movie she also has a good acting performance, also the main character played by Billy Howle also has a good way of expressing the frustrations of his role and that is one of the things I liked about the movie, also the staging on the beach of Chesil is a marvel visually and makes the moments in which they are on the beach feel more intimate and you go deeper into the story of the characters and their conflicts.

   La banda sonora también es otro punto a favor de la película pero la duración de esta película me pareció muy larga, casi dos horas en las que la historia iba en una secuencia entre la actualidad y el pasado. Tocaron también superficialmente temas como el abuso sexual y los problemas de pareja, que en parte los temas de abuso sexual son delicados y que en esta película a pesar de que no hablan explícitamente de esta situación si muestran como puede una persona abusada vivir de una manera que a pesar de que no recuerde lo ocurrido, tiene ciertos comportamientos o problemas emocionales que demuestran que el abuso es algo que te marca para siempre.

   The soundtrack is also another point in favor of the film but the length of this film seemed to me very long, almost two hours in which the story went in a sequence between the present and the past. They also touched superficially on issues such as sexual abuse and relationship problems, which in part the issues of sexual abuse are delicate and that in this film even though they do not speak explicitly of this situation if they show how an abused person can live in a way that even though they do not remember what happened, they have certain behaviors or emotional problems that show that abuse is something that marks you forever.

   Para mí está película fue una historia de amor en al que los personajes no estaban preparados para estar juntos o tal vez si hubieran tomado la decisión de conversar y hablar sobre su pasado podría ser que la relación se hubiera mantenido. Me gustó que en los últimos minutos de la película todo como que avanza muy rápido, pasan los años y se puede ver el cambio tanto en la vida de Edward como en la de Florence y cómo a pesar del tiempo y de que cada uno continuó con su vida aún siente ese cariño y admiración por lo que vivieron juntos.

   For me this movie was a love story in which the characters were not ready to be together or maybe if they had taken the decision to talk and talk about their past it could have been that the relationship would have been maintained. I liked that in the last minutes of the movie everything moves very fast, years go by and you can see the change in Edward's life as well as in Florence's and how in spite of the time and the fact that each one continued with their lives they still feel that affection and admiration for what they lived together.

   La frase inicial del libro marca el tono y revela el espíritu de la historia: _“Eran jóvenes, instruidos y vírgenes aquella noche, la de su boda, y vivían en un tiempo en que la conversación sobre dificultades sexuales era claramente imposible”_ (pág. 11) Inglaterra, a inicio de los años sesenta. Edward es un historiador de clase baja, aldeano, que sabe de flores y de pájaros, aprecia el Blues, es franco y en apariencias, un joven simple. Florence proviene de una familia adinerada y es torpe e insegura, excepto en lo que respecta a su música: es una virtuosa violinista que domina su arte. Se conocen en una manifestación contra las armas nucleares y se enamoran en una época en que _“ser joven era un obstáculo social […] un estado algo vergonzoso cuya curación iniciaba el matrimonio”_ (pág. 14) y por ende, tras un breve y necesario noviazgo, deciden casarse. Allí comienza la cuenta regresiva hacia el momento definitorio de la historia.

   

   Florence le tiene miedo al acto sexual, del cual no conoce más que lo que ha leído en algunos libros. Está aterrada por la penetración y por eso retrasa el momento de la consumación de su matrimonio. Desde el principio de la relación ha estado huyendo hacia adelante: entregando un poco más cada vez para satisfacer a Edward, caricias, insinuaciones, porque verdaderamente lo ama, pero sabiendo que cuando llegue el momento decisivo, no podrá hacerlo. Tiene miedo pero no sabe cómo decirlo. A su vez, Edward quiere estar a la altura de la experiencia, evitar la precocidad y no mostrar a Florence una virginidad que ella ignora.

   La época y las normas sociales los presionan aún estando solos. Las expectativas y la inexperiencia de ambos les juegan en contra. En el momento del acto sexual, Florence se esfuerza en vencer la repulsión, el asco, le apremia el sentido del deber. Él soporta la dilación; ve en la timidez de Florence una ventaja ante su propia falta de experiencia. Cuando se materializa el peor de los temores de Edward, Florence huye a la playa.

   

   El horror, la vergüenza, la repulsión hacia el semen de Edward que cubre su piel le impide calmarse, pensar las cosas. Hasta este punto la película se mantiene bastante fiel al libro, tiene buenas actuaciones y una hermosa fotografía; pero en los últimos minutos introduce dos hechos que cambian completamente el sentido de la historia: Edward conoce por casualidad a la hija de Florence y años más tarde asiste a su último concierto cumpliendo una promesa de amor que en el libro no se materializa. Sorprendentemente el guionista de la cinta es el mismo McEwan que, supongo, quiso dar un final más hollywoodense a la trama pero que a mi criterio perjudica el alma de la novela.

   Así que, una vez más, el libro es mucho mejor que la película. Léanlo y estarán de acuerdo conmigo.

   For almost its entire length, this adaptation of Ian McEwan's 2007 novella is close to perfect: the beautifully-modulated, restrained story of a strait-laced couple in the still strait-laced early '60s who look back on their often idyllic courtship from the claustrophobic environs of their honeymoon suite.

   McEwan and director Dominic Cooke don't change much of the book: they and their cast just subtly externalise feelings that were elucidated as thoughts on the page, and cast off a few memorable moments that might alienate or unwittingly unnerve a cinematic audience (a spasming muscle, jizz on the face).

   The leads are brilliant, particularly Saoirse Ronan as the sexually repressed violin prodigy Florence, and if a couple of elements don't quite work − McEwan's slightly embarrassing fixation with Edward (Billy Howle) liking a good ruck, and Anne Marie-Duff's simplistic scenes as his mother, which are tonally off − those are offset by passages of understated lyricism and rich, convincing romance which clash gloriously with the hysterically uncomfortable wedding night, from the inedible none-more-1962 meal (rendered gloriously on the screen: slice of melon with glace cherry, anyone?) to Edward rolling off the bed because he can't have sex with his shoes on.

   When the explosion comes, and it does, it's heartbreakingly portrayed, and one of those sequences that works so well because it's so faithfully rendered. Then McEwan starts to write new scenes that were merely summarised in the book, and all bets are off. The first three − dealing with Edward and his family − are minor but quite satisfying, especially the one with his father, and the fourth is an absolute belter, a slightly obvious but incredibly affecting scene set in a record shop in 1975.

   If only they'd ended the film there, as the next has Edward explaining not just the moral but also the text of the story, before a closing sequence set in 2007 that has some of the worst Old Person Make-Up that I've seen: he looks like he's been badly burned, and the rest of the cast are only slightly less ridiculous. Yes, the moment that it's all leading up to got to me, even while I knew I was being manipulated, but from Edward's risible stance at the crease onwards, it's an embarrassing and completely unnecessary coda.

   Look, lads, you've got a while till the general release, how about heading back and having another go? Because most of this movie is bloody brilliant.
