This time, I’m pleased to share with you a review of an anime that I really liked, Chi: Chikyū no Undō ni Tsuite, known in English as Orb: About the Earth's Movements, a historical, science fiction and mystery series created by Japanese mangaka Uoto, best known for combining surreal horror, psychological drama, and social criticism.

En esta ocasión es un placer para mí compartir con ustedes una reseña sobre un anime que me gustó mucho, se trata de Chi: Chikyū no Undō ni Tsuite, que en español se conoce como Orbe: Sobre los movimientos de la Tierra, una serie de género histórico, ciencia ficción y misterio creada por el mangaka japonés Uoto, mejor conocido por combinar terror surrealista, drama psicológico y crítica social.
It should be noted that this anime about astronomy has been ranked as one of the best of 2024. The story begins by showing the life of Rafal, a 12-year-old teenager with a brilliant mind who is destined to study theology, as was common for a boy like him at that time and place. However, everything changes for him when he meets a scholar named Hubert, who discovers the heliocentric theory, which proposes that the earth revolves around the sun. Cabe destacar que este anime sobre astronomía ha sido catalogado como uno de los mejores del año 2024. La historia inicia mostrando la vida a Rafal, un adolescente de 12 años con una mente brillante que está destinado a estudiar teología, ya que era lo más común para un chico como él en esa época y lugar. Sin embargo, todo cambia para él cuando conoce a un erudito llamado Hubert, quien descubre la teoría heliocéntrica, que propone que la tierra gira alrededor del sol. Para la época histórica, este tipo de teorías eran consideradas blasfemia por la iglesia, que tenía un gran poder político y en todos los estratos de la sociedad. Hubert por tanto es considerado un hereje. Lo fascinante de la teoría heliocéntrica despertó el interés de Rafal, lo que lo llevó a profundizar en la investigación sobre el tema y por ende a enfrentar grandes consecuencias.
Los eventos se desarrollan en la Europa medieval, específicamente en Polonia, y aunque es una historia ficticia se nos presentan hechos que pudieron tener lugar hipotéticamente en la vida real. La serie avanza años, y vamos viendo como esta teoría se va relevando de persona a persona, y cada una de estas tiene un aporte hacia la teoría así como también deben correr con las consecuencias de sus estudios e investigaciones por el bien de la ciencia y de la verdad.
The Inquisition by the Church plays an important role in this anime, and those who dared to investigate or study the celestial bodies and the movements of the Earth in order to understand how they work faced great dangers and threats of death at the stake, or at the very least terrible torture by the inquisitors, who were especially ruthless in the service of the clergy.
It must be said that this anime is not for everyone, as it can be a bit slow and also has a lot of philosophical content. I would say it is more for people interested in the specific subject matter. Personally, I found it fascinating because it combines some history with very interesting plots about innovative astronomical theories for the time.
La inquisición por parte de la iglesia juega un papel importante en este anime, y quienes se atrevían a investigar o estudiar los cuerpos celestres y los movimientos de la tierra para trata de comprender su funcionamiento se enfrentaban a grandes peligros y amenazas de muerte en la hoguera, o mínimo terribles torturas por parte de los inquisidores quienes eran especialmente despiadados al servicio del clero.
Hay que decir que este anime no es para todos, ya que puede resultar un poco lento y además tiene mucho componente filosófico, diría que es más para personas interesadas en la temática específica. A mí en lo particular me pareció fascinante porque combina algo de historia con tramas muy interesantes sobre teorías astronómicas innovadoras para la época.

Today I want to talk to you about this anime, which has been ranked as one of this year's best. I've taken the time, as much as I can, to watch anime; it's a hobby I'm getting back into and which I consider harmless. But I'm especially watching these anime that are starting to rank as the best. We've had several this year, and now it's this one's turn.

Yo me he tomado el tiempo, en la medida que puedo, de ir viendo anime, es un hobby que estoy recuperando y que considero inofensivo. Pero, especialmente estoy viendo estos animes que empiezan a clasificar como los mejores, este año hemos tenido varios, ahora le toca el turno a este.
Orb: On the movements of the Earth is available on Netflix and is an astronomy anime, basically. The series begins by following Rafal, a rather brilliant young man of just 12 years old. Rafal at that time lives governed by a kind of philosophy that is to do what is most convenient for him but that allows him to have an easy life, so to speak, he was “destined” and determined to study theology, since it was the right and convenient thing for him... However, everything changes from one moment to the next when he meets Hubert, this man is a scholar who discovers the heliocentric theory, which proposes that the Earth revolves around the Sun. This theory is considered blasphemy by the Church, consequently Hubert is also considered a heretic for having come up with that theory.

La serie empieza siguiendo a Rafal, un jovencito bastante brillante con apenas 12 años, Rafal en este entonces vive regido por una especie de filosofía que es hacer lo que es más conveniente para él pero que le permita tener una vida fácil, por así decirlo, él estaba destinado y decidido a estudiar teología, ya que era lo correcto y conveniente para él… Sin embargo, todo cambia de un momento a otro cuando conoce a Hubert, este hombre es un erudito que descubre la teoría heliocéntrica, donde se propone que la tierra gira alrededor del sol. Esta teoría es considerada blasfemia por la iglesia, por consiguiente Hubert también es considerado un hereje por haber venido con esa teoría.
This is how this anime is presented to us. All of this takes place in what would be 15th-century Europe, obviously not the real one but rather a fictional one, and if we pay attention to the details, we'll see that it's in Poland where all of this takes place. The series actually progresses quite a bit in each chapter, even advancing years and years. We see how this theory is passed on person to person, each of whom has a contribution to the theory.
Así es como nos presentan este anime. Todo esto viene a desarrollarse en lo que sería una Europa del siglo XV, obviamente no la real sino mas bien una ficticia y si prestamos atención a los detalles, veremos que es en Polonia donde transcurre todo esto. La serie realmente en cada capítulo va avanzando bastante, incluso avanza años y años, vamos viendo como esta teoría se va relevando de personas, donde cada una de estas tiene un aporte hacia la teoría.
That is to say, what we'll see here is an anime that doesn't focus on a single character but on multiple characters. There really are no protagonists here, just story, experience, and knowledge.
Until I finished watching it, I considered it a rather debatable anime, especially because of its ending, since there are many theories about it, even I have my own. Honestly, it's not an anime for everyone; it's not that easy to digest, nor is it complicated, but it's certainly possible that many people won't like it because it's not typical. It's as if it portrays something historical where dogma and science collide. It's much slower-paced and also more philosophical, but I think it was a really good anime. I did like it, but it leaves a lot to think about and reflect on.
Es decir, lo que veremos aquí es anime que no se centra en un único personaje sino en múltiples, realmente no hay protagonistas aquí, solo historia, experiencia y conocimientos.
Hasta que termine de verlo fue que lo consideré un anime bastante debatible, especialmente por su cierre del final, ya que hay muchas teorías al respecto, hasta yo tengo la mía. Sinceramente no es un anime para cualquiera, no es tan sencillo de digerir, tampoco es complicado pero ciertamente es posible que a muchas personas no les guste porque no es lo típico, es como si retratase algo histórico donde entran en conflicto el dogma y la ciencia, es muchísimo más lento y también más filosófico, pero considero que fue realmente un buen anime, sí me gustó pero deja mucho que pensar y reflexionar.

Hi everyone! Guess who’s here with insights on another coincidentally found anime, mind-blowing, at least in my opinion, the worth of which will be decided by you all, my dear readers.
Starting off with how I came across this anime, short background story time, I suppose. So, one day I randomly opened the feed that shows up on the Google page, the one you get when you swipe left on your Android phone, and it showed me this CBR article on this amazing underrated anime. After taking a look at it (which means I Googled the anime and checked out the first few images), they looked decent enough for me to give it a try. And so, here I am, writing a review with positive results. So no, it didn’t disappoint at all, and yes, I’m glad I came across this anime.
Good old Foolish times
So, the setting of the anime is in the 15th century, and yeah, you guessed it, I’m a sucker for those old-age anime, where they take you back to those Stone Age eras, make you go through the fun part of imagining and hypothesizing different concepts in the past, times when things weren’t as advanced as they are now, and how it could have been. And because the past is the past, and there is no way of knowing most details for certain, you can add whatever you like in those old stories, and with just a pinch of truth, they become interesting enough to be both real and imaginary at the same time, captivating my interest. So yeah, from the get-go, you have my attention in this setting, where they are showing an old era where the church has the ultimate rules and so popes and bishops are the rulers in a way.
The Specific setting within the old times
So, the highlighted part among all this is that they believe in the geocentric theory, meaning they believe that Earth is special and that it is at the center of everything, and so everything revolves around Earth. Obviously, this is quite foolish, but from a point of view where the church rules, I guess it is more convenient to believe that and keep the people under their influence. And so, in this age, they have associated this theory with the religious teachings in a way, and anyone who defies this theory is going against the faith or the church's rulings, and so it is considered an act of blasphemy.
The irony in having no freedom of Belief
I mean, come to think of it, imagine being burned on a cross for thinking the Earth revolves around the sun, LOL. But yeah, seeing this being implemented, and having serious consequences for holding this belief, which they refer to as heliocentrism, makes it understandable and even more interesting to watch. And so, the anime starts with the main character realizing heliocentrism is real, but due to the strict laws, he must carry on his research in confidentiality to avoid being burned, and also to avoid this nosy church dog sniffing around.
The truth precedes all
Despite the strict laws that put one’s life at stake, like literally, the main character is still drawn to the truth. And while it would be easier for him to lie to himself and make everything work out for the better, he still ends up choosing to continue his dangerous research. It’s exciting watching someone work for something they are passionate about, despite the environment demotivating them in every way.
Main concept rather than Main Character Energy
Another unorthodox approach in this anime, which I haven’t seen in many others, but which suits the theme and feeds the purpose of the anime so well, is dividing it into arcs. For each arc, we have new characters, yet they are all connected through this common theory. The purpose and the remnants of the previous arc or era carry on in one form or another. This approach helps make the purpose and theme more highlighted and focused upon, while the characters are merely catalysts for the events happening, furthering their cause with each arc and event.
No Absolute outcome, History continues
The anime does not have an absolute outcome, as they barely depict some events that may have happened in a fictional past setting. The history carries on, and the whole concept portrays only a part of that history. Hence, having no absolute outcome and leaving it somewhat open suits the plot and theme of the anime. However, we do get our answers and the right conclusive mindset by the end of the anime. For me, it was a good watch and a fitting ending.
Recommendation x 100 times
It's really clear from the whole content, but I urge you all to watch this anime. In case you have similar taste to mine, you're bound to enjoy the anime a lot, or at least the first few arcs for sure, if not the final ones. Also, the anime has a lot of talking and spilling one’s way of thinking, but again, that’s typical in anime either way. Despite that, I would still recommend this anime!

Plot
The story is based on the time of the 15th century, specifically in Poland, while the custom at that time was to execute or burn those who possessed heretical ideas. El problema es que su investigación va en contra de lo que enseña la Iglesia Católica Europea. Cerca de ser ejecutado, le enseña y le deja su investigación al joven prodigio que por su parte ha logrado avanzar en tan poco tiempo. Cuando el encapuchado es ejecutado por un verdugo peligroso llamado Nowak, Rafal decide seguir con su investigación. No obstante, alguien le informa a la iglesia sobre esto y Nowak captura al joven quien en la cárcel decide quitarse la vida antes de sufrir el horrible trato que los herejes reciben antes de su ejecución. This is the first time I've seen an anime of the historical genre that has fascinated me so much. And despite its mixture of fictional characters with scientific and astronomical elements and themes that at the time were only theories related to the earth and the way it moves, I found it quite interesting to watch because of the way the story was told and the way the characters were developed in such an authentic way. Not to mention the impressive audiovisual work it has, a merit that goes to one of the biggest and oldest studios in the anime world. However, despite all this, the anime is definitely not made for all audiences. Being a Seinen, it is common for it to possess a much darker and cruel tone of one of the most difficult times in human history. The good thing about it is that realistic tone of showing the cruelest and bloodiest side of humanity itself, curiously by one of the largest and seemingly "saintly" organizations in the world. Without further ado, let's begin to break down the masterpiece we have on this occasion.

Es la primera vez que veo un anime del género histórico y que a la vez me ha fascinado tanto. Y es que, a pesar de su mezcla de personajes ficticios con elementos y temas científicos y astronómicos que en aquella época eran solo teorías relacionadas a la tierra y la forma que tiene de moverse; me resultó bastante interesante de ver por la forma de contar dicha historia y desarrollar personajes de una manera tan auténtica. Eso sin mencionar el impresionante trabajo audiovisual que posee, mérito que se lleva uno de los estudios más grandes y antiguos del mundo del anime. Sin embargo, a pesar de todo esto, el anime definitivamente no está hecho para todo el público. Siendo un Seinen, es común que posea un tono mucho más oscuro y cruel de una de las épocas más difíciles de la historia humana. Lo bueno de esto es ese tono realista de mostrar el lado más cruel y sangriento de la misma humanidad, curiosamente por parte de una de las organizaciones más grandes y aparentemente “santas” del mundo. Starting with the story they try to tell us, this anime seems to have different parts or different protagonists that we will get to know throughout the chapters. These characters mostly do not relate to each other or meet together on the same date, but they are several decades apart. However, what unites them is one thing in common: heliocentrism. As I mentioned above, what made both Hubert and young Rafal sacrifice their own lives was the investigation of a new way of looking at the world. An investigation that was called heliocentrism and that since then has been persecuting those who investigate and defend that belief. This is because it goes against what is taught in the Catholic Church, which makes it count as heresy. During the 25 episodes of this anime we will meet different characters who investigated, defended and inherited these teachings from generation to generation.
For those who are wondering, no, they are not real characters who have existed in history, but fictional characters who, in one way or another served as messengers for one of the most brilliant minds we know of that time. Beyond being a historical or scientific lecture, this anime is more a fictional work that represents all that it entails to follow and walk in the path of truth. It is a lesson and an example of what happens when a person goes against the teachings, traditions or beliefs of society, religions or governments. Brilliant minds that turned the way of seeing the world upside down and sacrificed themselves to delegate the responsibility of revealing the truth to the world. Nowadays, in the information age in which we find ourselves, it is curious to see these types of stories because they reveal a way of thinking and acting very different from what we know now. To see how extreme and cruel they were back then with those who went against what was believed is more than enough to make us think and reflect.

Empezando por la historia que nos intentan contar, este anime parece poseer distintas partes o distintos protagonistas que iremos conociendo a lo largo de los capítulos. Estos personajes mayormente no se relacionan entre sí o se encuentran juntos en una misma fecha, sino que se encuentran entre varias décadas de diferencia. Sin embargo, lo que los une es una sola cosa en común: el heliocentrismo. Como ya les mencioné arriba, lo que hizo que tanto Hubert como el joven Rafal los llevara a sacrificar sus propias vidas fue la investigación de una nueva forma de ver el mundo. Una investigación que se llamó heliocentrismo y que desde entonces se ha estado persiguiendo a quienes investigan y defienden dicha creencia. Esto es debido a que va en contra de lo que enseñan en la iglesia católica, lo cual hace que cuente como una herejía. Durante los 25 episodios que posee este anime conoceremos a distintos personajes que investigaron, defendieron y heredaron estas enseñanzas de generación en generación.
Para los que se estén preguntando, no, no son personajes reales que hayan existido en la historia, sino personajes ficticios que, de alguna u otra manera sirvieron como mensajeros para una de las mentes más brillantes que conocemos de aquella época. Más allá de ser una cátedra histórica o científica, este anime es más una obra ficticia que representa todo lo que conlleva seguir y andar en la senda de la verdad. Es una lección y un ejemplo de lo que sucede cuando una persona va en contra de las enseñanzas, las tradiciones o las creencias de la sociedad, las religiones o los gobiernos. Mentes brillantes que dieron un vuelco a la forma de ver el mundo y que se sacrificaron para delegar la responsabilidad de revelar la verdad ante el mundo. Actualmente, en la época de la información en la que nos encontramos, es curioso ver este tipo de historias ya que nos revelan una forma de pensar y actuar muy distinta a lo que conocemos ahora. Ver lo extremistas y crueles que eran en aquel entonces con los que iban en contra de lo que se creía es más que suficiente para ponernos a pensar y reflexionar.

Something that fascinates me about this anime is the particular way it develops its characters. Being several protagonists, each one differs in age, education, profession and upbringing. They all have very different ways of thinking and reasoning, but what unites them in a single path is heliocentrism. We can see how such research completely changes their lives, leaving aside their personal preferences, dreams or desires. It even gave some of them hope and a brighter and happier way of looking at the dark and cruel world they lived in back then. And speaking of how cruel this time was, another detail that I really like is the crude way of representing how the catholic church was back then with the heretics. More especially with the executioners, being the special antagonist Nowak, a character that came to stand out as much as the protagonists themselves due to his deep development and history, not to mention his influence and what he did with the practitioners and defenders of heliocentrism.
Although the anime has raw, bloody, cruel and even heartbreaking elements and moments; one of the things that fascinated me is how well set that era was, even more so with the way the main characters saw and studied the stars, for example. Also the construction of symbolic elements, phrases, monologues and different opinions about such research are elements that stand out quite a bit in this story. I'm not surprised that this anime was liked by so many people considering all this. But the best part is how it all centers around a battle between the church and the truth and how these clash time and time again until it finally concludes in an awesome way. The perfect blend of drama, suspense, action and history that this show has is impeccable. With that in mind, this series also has a way of surprising us with plot twists and conclusions so unexpected that it's hard not to be fascinated.

Algo que me fascina de este anime es la manera tan particular de desarrollar a sus personajes. Siendo varios los protagonistas, cada uno se diferencia entre edad, educación, profesión y crianzas. Todos tienen formas de pensar y razonar muy diferentes entre sí, pero lo que los une en un solo camino es el heliocentrismo. Podemos ver cómo dicha investigación les cambia por completo la vida, dejando de lado sus preferencias, sueños o deseos personales. Incluso hasta les dió a algunos una esperanza y una forma más brillante y alegre de ver el mundo tan oscuro y cruel en el que vivían en aquel entonces. Y hablamos de lo cruel que era esta época, otro detalle que me gusta mucho es la manera tan cruda de representar cómo era la iglesia católica en aquel entonces con los herejes. Más en especial con los verdugos, siendo el antagonista especial Nowak, un personaje que llegó a destacar tanto como los mismos protagonistas debido a su profundo desarrollo y su historia, sin contar su influencia y lo que hizo con los practicantes y defensores del heliocentrismo.
Si bien el anime posee elementos y momentos crudos, sangrientos, crueles y hasta desgarradores; una de las cosas que me fascinaron es lo bien ambientado que estaba dicha época, más aún con la forma en la que los personajes principales veían y estudiaban las estrellas, por ejemplo. También la construcción de elementos simbólicos, frases, monólogos y opiniones distintas sobre dicha investigación son elementos que resaltan bastante en esta historia. No me sorprende que este anime haya gustado a tanta gente teniendo todo esto en cuenta. Pero lo mejor es cómo todo se centra en una batalla entre la iglesia y la verdad y como estos se enfrentan una y otra vez hasta que finalmente concluye de una manera impresionante. La perfecta mezcla de drama, suspenso, acción e historia que tiene esta obra es impecable. Con esto presente, está serie también posee la forma de sorprendernos con giros de trama y conclusiones tan inesperadas que es difícil no quedarse fascinado.

Last but not least, let's talk about the technical aspect of this anime. Having the great studio Madhouse as the producer and animator of this great series, it is to be expected that it has a level of animation far above most anime nowadays. The highly detailed animation style, the character designs, the use of dark, cool and varied color palettes and even the different panels or styles of movement and visuals that this anime possesses is jaw-dropping. I quite like how they play very well with the styles and effects to offer us sequences that, in moments where only the dialogue is the protagonist, we remain absorbed with the view that they show us. Here the soundtrack also plays a lot, which is also very well done and manages to perfectly set these moments with melodies and background music that convey very well the emotions that this work possesses. It may not be an anime for everyone, but for those interested in this kind of stories it is a perfect choice.
Personally, I give it a 10/10 rating as far as the story and drama genre is concerned.

Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos del apartado técnico de este anime. Contando con el grandioso estudio Madhouse como la productora y animadora de esta gran serie, es de esperarse que tenga un nivel de animación muy por encima de la mayoría de animes de la actualidad. El estilo de animación tan detallado, los diseños de los personajes, el uso de paletas de colores oscuros, fríos y variados e incluso los diferentes paneles o estilos de movimiento y visuales que posee este anime es para quedarse boquiabierto. Me gusta bastante cómo juegan muy bien con los estilos y efectos para ofrecernos secuencias que, en momentos donde solo el diálogo es protagonista, nos quedamos absortos con la vista que nos muestran. Aquí juega mucho también la banda sonora, la cual también está muy bien hecha y logra ambientar perfectamente estos momentos con melodías y música de fondo que transmiten muy bien las emociones que posee esta obra. Puede que no sea un anime para todo el mundo, pero para los interesados en este tipo de historias es una perfecta elección.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 10/10 en lo que respecta al género de historia y drama.
