It is quite difficult for me to find a movie or series to watch among the variety of titles that streaming platforms nowadays present us with. That's why when someone recommends something to me I try to pay attention and watch whatever it is they have recommended. TikTok, for example, has become for me a guide to decide what kind of content to enjoy.
In this case I looked for a review to help me choose. I am very passionate about the history of mankind in its entirety. So when looking for what to watch I came across a movie in the Netflix catalog that touched on the topic of nuclear plant disasters, I knew that would be a wise choice.
There are several elements that make this topic quite interesting to me. The first, of course, had to be the Chernobyl nuclear disaster that occurred in 1986 and the other event, a bit more recent to the popular imagination, was the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011. So, all in all, I knew that if the film was going to go that way and I was going to enjoy it quite a bit.
A 2016 Korean film, although I was initially looking for something Japanese to watch, because I love films from the land of the rising sun, I ended up settling on this dramedy and thought it would be the one. Pandora starts off showing a lot of what I feel South Korean culture movies portray: exasperating mothers, kids with social pressure that is hard to bear and a lot of drama, so much so that it makes any drama a caricature.
I'm not a big fan of what they do in those parts, but I must admit that I have been seduced by several of the proposals that come out of this country. Es por eso que cuando alguien me recomienda algo trato de hacer caso y ver lo que sea que me hayan recomendado. TikTok, por ejemplo, se ha convertido para mí en una guía para decidir qué tipo de contenido disfrutar.
En este caso busqué alguna review que me ayudara a elegir. Yo soy un gran apasionado de la historia de la humanidad en toda su extensión. Así que cuando buscando que ver me topé con una película en el catálogo de Netflix que tocaba el tema de los desastres en plantas nucleares, supe que esa sería una opción acertada.
Son varios los elementos que hacen de este tema algo bastante interesante para mí. La primera, por supuesto, tenía que ser el desastre nuclear de Chernóbil ocurrido en 1986 y el otro evento, un poco más reciente para el imaginario popular, fue el accidente nuclear de Fukushima en 2011. Así que, en definitiva, sabía que si la película iría por ese camino y yo la iba a disfrutar bastante.
Un filme coreano de 2016, aunque al principio estaba buscando algo japonés para ver, porque me encantan las películas del país del sol naciente, me termine quedando con este dramón y pensé que sería la indicada. Pandora comienza mostrando mucho de lo que a mi parecer retratan las películas de la cultura de Corea del Sur: madres exasperantes, chicos con una presión social difícil de soportar y mucho drama, tanto que hacen de cualquier drama una caricatura.

In a small Korean town, the residents see the local nuclear power plants as a threat to their lives; on the one hand, they can get hundreds of jobs for a region far away from the city, and on the other hand, they know the dangers they are exposed to in case of a nuclear accident. A young dreamer, Kang Jae-hyuk(Kim Nam-gil), who lost his father and brother during a nuclear accident knows all too well how dangerous it is to work at the plant, but he doesn't have much choice.
In fact, she has lost all the compensation she received from her mother Suk from the state as a result of the death of her husband and son. Failed by the bankruptcy of a restaurant in which he invested all that money, he returns to the village to work in the same nuclear plant that had caused so much suffering to his family. The nuclear power plant, for its part, has expired its operating time, but bureaucracy and capitalist interests end up postponing its definitive closure.
This makes the road to an accident much more propitious and soon a nuclear disaster with catastrophic consequences for more than 3 million people begins to claim lives. Pyeong-seok (Jeong Jin-yeong) had warned everyone about the dangers of working at this plant and works hard to prevent the accident from claiming more lives.
But, the nuclear reactor heats up and all the workers are exposed to high levels of radioactivity, while the protagonist's mother and his girlfriend, sister-in-law and nephew try to escape the approaching poisonous cloud, the poisoned workers will have to decide whether to go back and try to put an end to the disaster brewing in the bowels of the nuclear plant or simply run away and leave the entire population surrounding the plant exposed.

Pandora is weak, so much so that the film only begins with the disaster, the pre-crash is pathetic and full of absurd situations. Boring and quite discouraging. Although, I must admit that it seems to work well when the director decides to delve into the waters of criticism towards nuclear energy in his country and the rest of the world. It gives the impression that with Fukushima being so close to our memories, the director is trying to fill the void and answers that Japan has failed to solve.
The narrative is one of the worst I've seen, the characters are the typical ones presented in this kind of Korean content, but they seem to be loaded with all the stereotypes we know. However, I enjoyed viewing the film from every angle. We got to see the prime minister deciding to cease plant operations and the underlying political turmoil. I could also feel the fear of those fleeing the disaster, of the relatives of those who remained at the plant.
I could also feel the spirit of bravery that characterizes the fire department in disasters of this kind, giving one's life for others is the bravest thing a human being can do. But, as the film ended and we were inundated by director Park Jeong-woo, with sequences that promised to make even the toughest of men cry, I was bored by the over-the-top exaggeration of the performances.
And when Kang Jae-hyuk immolates himself for the sake of his community and millions of others, we were thankful that such a long scene of suffering was finally over. The film is two hours long, entertaining, yes, but with the worst ending I have ever seen. But the message that it wanted to leave us to protocolize society in catastrophic situations such as these, has its effect. Even with the open wounds of the nuclear accidents of recent times, you decide if it is worth watching Pandora.

Da la impresión que, estando Fukushima tan cercana a nuestros recuerdos, el director intenta llenar el vacío y las respuestas que Japón no ha podido solventar.
La narrativa es de lo peor que he visto, los personajes son los típicos que se presentan en este tipo de contenido coreano, pero pareciera ser que están cargados de todos los estereotipos que conocemos. Sin embargo, me gusto visualizar la película desde cada ángulo. Pudimos ver al primer ministro decidiendo cesar las operaciones de la planta y el revuelo político subyacente. Pude también sentir el miedo de quienes huían del desastre, de los familiares de los que se quedaron en la planta.
También pude sentir el espíritu de valentía que caracteriza al cuerpo de bomberos en desastres de este tipo, dar la vida por los demás es lo más valiente que un ser humano puede hacer. Pero, mientras la película terminaba y nos inundaba el director Park Jeong-woo, con secuencias que prometían hacer llorar hasta el más duro de los hombres, yo estaba aburrido por la excesiva exageración de las actuaciones.
Y cuando Kang Jae-hyuk se inmola en favor a su comunidad y de millones de personas, dimos gracias porque al fin tan larga escena de sufrimiento se haya acabado. Dos horas dura este filme, entretenida, eso sí, pero con el peor final que jamás haya visto. Eso sí que el mensaje que quería dejarnos de protocolizar a la sociedad en situaciones catastróficas como estas, surte su efecto. Aun con las heridas abiertas de los accidentes nucleares de los últimos tiempos, decidan ustedes si vale la pena ver Pandora.
