To wrap up the week, I want to share something I saw yesterday that truly surprised me. It turns out there's a universe where certain Disney characters (Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Bambi, or Pinocchio) aren't as we know them (the Twisted Childhood Universe), and this originated with the film "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey." I knew of these films' existence, but I'd never seen them until yesterday. Rhys Frake-Waterfield is the creator/director of this series of independent films, and their genre, in case there's any doubt, is horror/slasher, but with a distinct edge. It's worth noting that, being independent, it might falter in certain aspects, but the essence is clear: to make you squirm in your seat when you see what ultimately happens to the characters.
Para cerrar la semana quiero compartir con ustedes esto que vi el día de ayer y que la verdad me dejó sorprendido. Resulta que existe un universo en el cual ciertos personajes de Disney (Winnie the Pooh, Peter Pan, Bambi o Pinocho) no son como los conocemos (Universo de la Infancia Retorcida), siendo el origen de esto la película "Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey". Si sabía de la existencia de estos films pero nunca los había visto hasta ayer. Rhys Frake-Waterfield es el creador/director de esta serie de películas que entran en la categoría de cine independiente y cuyo género, por si quedan dudas, es el terror/slasher pero bien marcado. Hay que decir que por ser independiente puede que flaquee en ciertas cosas pero la esencia es clara: hacer que te retuerzas en la silla cuando veas lo que termina pasándole a las personas.
Everyone knows the story of Pinocchio, the wooden puppet, guided by Jiminy Cricket, who came to life and, if he was good and honest, could become a real boy. Well, this is the complete opposite. We have Geppetto, the puppet maker, and his grandson James. This boy has suffered greatly in his short life because he has lost important people in his life, so his grandfather decides to build him a puppet to be his friend forever, and yes, that is Pinocchio. His appearance is quite repulsive, but inside he is a simple boy who only wants to be James's best friend. At first, everything is joy and happiness, but as Pinocchio gets to know the world around James, something in him gradually changes; everything takes a turn for the worse.
Todos conocen la historia de Pinocho, aquel muñeco de madera, guiado por Pepe grillo, que cobró vida y que si era bueno y honesto se podría convertir en un niño de verdad. Pues esto es todo lo contrario. Tenemos a Geppetto, el que hace los muñecos, y a su nieto James. Este niño ha sufrido mucho en su corta vida porque ha perdido a personas importantes para él por lo que su abuelo decide construirle un muñeco para que sea su amigo para siempre, y si, ese es Pinocho. De por si la apariencia es bastante repelente pero en el interior es un simple niño que lo unico que quiere es ser el mejor amigo de James. Al principio todo es alegría y felicidad pero conforme Pinocho va conociendo el mundo que rodea a James algo en él va cambiando poco a poco, todo se va retorciendo.
Pinocchio is ultimately innocent, a child, and therefore easily influenced. This is where the sinister Jiminy Cricket comes in, a character who begins to twist things so that Pinocchio acts badly in the name of his friendship with James. Precisely because he wants to protect him, Pinocchio embarks on a wave of deaths and atrocious crimes to also resemble his friend and become human. I think the main thing about this film is the horror of being at the mercy of a puppet with a very naive yet extremely visceral and evil demeanor. Watching a wooden puppet with a child's voice and laughter graphically murder people is incredible. And no, Chucky is a baby compared to how Pinocchio kills.
Pinocho al final es inocente, es un niño, por lo que es fácil de influenciar. Acá es cuando entra el Pepe grillo siniestro, este personaje que comienza a tergiversar las cosas para que Pinocho actúe mal en nombre de la amistad que tiene con James. Precisamente por querer protegerlo Pinocho empieza una ola de muertes y crímenes atroces para también parecerse a su amigo y convertirse en humano. Creo que lo principal de este film es el horror que supone estar a merced de un muñeco con un comportamiento muy ingenuo pero al mismo tiempo extremadamente visceral y lleno de maldad. Ver como un muñeco de madera con voz y risa de niño asesina muy gráficamente a las personas es increíble. Y no, Chucky es un bebé al lado de como mata Pinocho.
The warning I give you: it is very graphic and open with the deaths. If they have a weak stomach, I don't know if I would see it. Personally, I enjoy this because the genre is like that, slashers are as bloody as they go and the more explicit they are, the better. In addition to the fact that the deaths are very creative, this is another important point, the more absurd they are, the more colorful they will be. The first deaths are in a gym, if you have already seen the movie you will agree with how unique they were, and if not, when you see them you will remember this. As far as the plot is concerned, it's cool because towards the end it takes an interesting turn that changes the perspective of everything, the reality is that the real villain was another character who just decided to look the other way. There is no way you can get bored of this, you have to remove your cynicism with certain things and just enjoy.
La advertencia que les hago: es muy gráfica y abierta con las muertes. Si son de estomago débil no se si la vería. En lo personal disfruto de esto porque el género es así, los slasher son sangrientos hasta más no poder y mientras más explícitos sean, mejor. Además de que las muertes son muy creativas, este es otro punto importante, mientras más absurdas sean, más vistosas serán. Las primeras muertes son en un gimnasio, si ya viste la película estarás de acuerdo con lo únicas que fueron, y si no pues cuando las veas te acordarás de esto. En lo que a la trama se refiere pues está cool porque hacia el final da un giro interesante que cambia la perspectiva de todo, la realidad es que el verdadero villano era otro personaje solo que uno decidía mirar para otro lado. No hay manera de que aburras de esto, hay que quitarse el cinismo con ciertas cosas y simplemente disfrutar.
The downside is that the "independent film" feel was quite noticeable in some shots—not many, but there were things that looked a bit odd. Ultimately, it's not a big deal because I think that's the magic of these kinds of productions, how raw they can be. As for the characters, they're good because, as I haven't mentioned, the plot has a lot of comedy, so certain interactions were really good. You genuinely laugh at some things, especially Pinocchio's behavior when he was killing and Dudley's, one of James's friends. In short, this is a good example of a horror film that makes some references to great classics, in a satirical way, like Jaws or The Shining. Lots of blood, teeth, organs, bones, and deaths of all kinds. Recommended if you want to move away from paranormal horror and delve into the rawness of physical horror. Lo negativo es que a veces se notaba mucho ese factor de "cine independiente" en algunas tomas, pocas, pero si había cosas que se veían un poco raras. Al final no es grave porque creo que esa es la magia de este tipo de producciones, lo rudimentaria que pueden ser. En cuanto a los personajes están bien porque algo que no les dije, la trama tiene mucha comedia por lo que ciertas interacciones eran muy buenas, genuinamente te ríes con algunas cosas, sobretodo con la forma de ser Pinocho cuando mataba y la de Dudley, uno de los amigos de James. En fin, estamos ante un buen ejemplo de película de terror la cual hace algunas referencias a grandes clásicos, en forma de sátira, como Tiburón o El Resplandor (The Shining). Mucha sangre, dientes, órganos, huesos y muertes de todo tipo. Recomendada si quieres salirte del terror paranormal y caer en la crudeza de un horror físico. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
