I saw it a few days before the Goya ceremony, although it did not win in the main categories, it was recognized for its art direction and costumes, among other categories where it stands out for its careful work to recreate the convulsive decade of the seventies.

The first film I saw of filmmaker Alberto Rodríguez was Siete Vírgenes, I began to follow his trail, it took me a while to get hold of his previous works, but I was sure that he was a filmmaker whose career would be quite successful. I think it was with Grupo 7 that he consolidated his career, then came the also excellent La isla Mínima. These two films are among my favorites of his filmography.

In this opportunity they work again with Javier Gutiérrez, an actor who every year releases a large number of films and always offers an interpretation worthy of recognition. Alongside Gutiérrez is actor Miguel Herrán, known worldwide for playing Rio in the series La Casa de Papel. I never liked his character in that series, but a while ago I saw him in the film Hasta el Cielo and the young actor is showing his desire to grow. In Prison 77 he manages to convince me and make me forget the character in the series.

It is because of the chemistry between the two actors, the good work in creating believable secondary characters and the rhythm that the director injects, making the film thrills us catch, although before its last part I felt a bit of exhaustion, so I do not perceive it as the best film of the filmmaker, but it is a production worth seeing.

Prison 77 is a prison drama with all the good and bad that goes with it. Each genre has its own codes. There is nothing innovative in the structure and narration of the story, we will find many situations seen hundreds of times in other films set in prisons. Injustice, torture, death, betrayals among inmates, power struggles, escape attempts, corruption, drugs, etc. The success of these productions lies in knowing how to combine all these elements and not let the pace drop.

I know there are viewers who don't like the prison genre, you can't do anything, it will be difficult to capture the attention of a viewer with prejudices against that genre. Now, if you are one of those who do enjoy them, the film will leave you satisfied, because all the codes are handled effectively, demonstrating the mastery of the director to tell stories that will keep us interested until the last minute.

La vi unos días antes de la ceremonia de los Goya, aunque no ganó en las categorías principales, fue reconocida por su dirección artística y vestuario, entre otras categorías donde destaca por su cuidadoso trabajo para recrear la convulsa década de los setenta.

La primera película que vi del cineasta Alberto Rodríguez fue Siete Vírgenes, empecé a seguirle la pista, tardé en hacerme con sus trabajos anteriores, pero estaba seguro de que era un cineasta cuya carrera sería bastante exitosa. Creo que fue con Grupo 7 con la que consolidó su carrera, luego vino la también excelente La isla Mínima. Estas dos películas están entre mis favoritas de su filmografía.

En esta oportunidad vuelven a trabajar con Javier Gutiérrez, un actor que cada año estrena una gran cantidad de películas y siempre ofrece una interpretación digna de reconocimiento. Junto a Gutiérrez está el actor Miguel Herrán, conocido mundialmente por interpretar a Río en la serie La Casa de Papel. Nunca me gustó su personaje en esa serie, pero hace un tiempo le vi en la película Hasta el Cielo y el joven actor está demostrando sus ganas de crecer. En Modelo 77 consigue convencerme y hacerme olvidar el personaje de la serie.

Es por la química entre los dos actores, el buen trabajo en la creación de personajes secundarios creíbles y el ritmo que inyecta el director, haciendo que el film nos emocione atrape, aunque antes de su última parte sentí un poco de agotamiento, por lo que no la percibo como la mejor película del cineasta, pero es una producción que merece la pena ver.

Modelo 77 es un drama carcelario con todo lo bueno y lo malo que ello conlleva. Cada género tiene sus propios códigos. No hay nada innovador en la estructura y narración de la historia, encontraremos muchas situaciones vistas cientos de veces en otras películas ambientadas en prisiones. Injusticia, tortura, muerte, traiciones entre reclusos, luchas de poder, intentos de fuga, corrupción, drogas, etc. El éxito de estas producciones radica en saber combinar todos estos elementos y que no decaiga el ritmo.

Sé que hay espectadores a los que no les gusta el género carcelario, no se puede hacer nada, será difícil captar la atención de un espectador con prejuicios contra ese género. Ahora, si eres de los que si las disfrutan, la película te dejará satisfecho, porque todos los códigos están manejados con eficacia, demostrando la maestría del director para narrar historias que nos mantendrán interesados hasta el último minuto.

Unlike American prison dramas, this one is highly politically charged. It is set in Spain in the late 1970s. The story begins in the last months of 1976, when the citizens of that country were living the years of transition, with the elections that would take place and the enactment of some laws that would give way to the democratic period.

We will experience this change in Spanish society from the point of view of the incarcerated. During the Franco dictatorship, very harsh sentences were imposed on people who even committed minor crimes. This can be a topic of heated debate. Some may take the position that they favor harsh punishments regardless of the magnitude of the crime. It is an issue that inevitably divides sectors of society in any country.

In one part of the film there is a reference to the Vagrancy Act that was used to incarcerate. That reminded me that, in my country, in the past, there was a law with the same name and it was also used as a tool to punish many times unjustly people who ended up being victims of the corruption of the system itself.

In Franco's time, any excuse was valid to persecute opponents of the dictatorial regime. All totalitarian governments act in the same way, whether right-wing or left-wing, dictators are tyrants who only seek to perpetuate themselves in power and subjugate an entire country. In Latin America we are experts in electing dictators, especially leftists.

The character Manuel will be arrested in a robbery, not having money to hire a private lawyer, he must settle for public justice. It is through his point of view that we are told the story of how the transition to democracy was lived inside Spanish prisons. Almost the entire film takes place inside the prisons, and we see the outside world as the prisoners see it, from a distance, leaning out of a window.

Story-wise, this is the novelty of the film, the socio-political component of how the prisoners fight for their rights, receiving help from the Coordinadora de Presos en Lucha, which offered legal advice and tried to pass changes in the laws, get amnesty for many prisoners and improve conditions inside the prisons. But one thing is what one wants and another is reality. Every rotten system is full of worms that protect each other.

I have told you in previous reviews that one of the things I love about movies is their ability to encourage me to learn about the political and social environment in which a story takes place. I hope that many of you who see the film will be interested in learning a little more about the Spanish transition period, no matter what country you are from, knowledge enriches us.

A diferencia de los dramas carcelarios estadounidenses, éste tiene una fuerte carga política. Está ambientada en España a finales de los años setenta. La historia comienza en los últimos meses del año 76, cuando los ciudadanos de aquel país vivían los años de la transición, con las elecciones que tendrían lugar y la promulgación de algunas leyes que darían paso al periodo democrático.

Viviremos este cambio de la sociedad española, desde el punto de vista de los encarcelados. Durante la dictadura franquista se impusieron penas muy duras a personas que incluso cometían delitos menores. Este puede ser un tema de acalorado debate. Algunos pueden adoptar la postura de que están a favor de castigos severos independientemente de la magnitud del delito. Es una cuestión que inevitablemente divide a sectores de la sociedad en cualquier país.

En una parte de la película se hace referencia a la Ley de Vagos y Maleantes que se utilizaba para encarcelar. Eso me recordó que, en mi país, en el pasado, existía una ley con el mismo nombre y también se utilizaba como herramienta para castigar muchas veces injustamente a personas que acababan siendo víctimas de la corrupción del propio sistema.

En tiempos de Franco cualquier excusa era válida para perseguir a los opositores al régimen dictatorial. Todos los gobiernos totalitarios actúan de la misma manera, sean de derechas o de izquierdas, los dictadores son tiranos que sólo buscan perpetuarse en el poder y someter a todo un país. En América Latina somos expertos en elegir dictadores, sobre todo de izquierda.

El personaje Manuel será detenido en un robo, al no tener dinero para contratar un abogado particular, debe conformarse con la justicia pública. Es a través de su punto de vista que se nos cuenta la historia de cómo se vivió la transición a la democracia dentro de las cárceles españolas. Casi toda la película transcurre dentro de las cárceles, y vemos el mundo exterior como lo ven los presos, desde la distancia, asomados a una ventana.

A nivel de historia, ésta es la novedad de la película, el componente sociopolítico de cómo los presos luchan por sus derechos, recibiendo ayuda de la Coordinadora de Presos en Lucha, que ofrecía asesoramiento jurídico e intentaba aprobar cambios en las leyes, conseguir la amnistía para muchos presos y mejorar las condiciones dentro de las cárceles. Pero una cosa es lo que se quiere y otra la realidad. Todo sistema podrido está lleno de gusanos que se protegen unos a otros.

En críticas anteriores les he dicho que una de las cosas que me encantan de las películas es su capacidad para animarme a aprender sobre el entorno político y social en el que se desarrolla una historia. Espero que muchos de los que vean la película se interesen por aprender un poco más sobre el periodo de la transición española, no importa de qué país seas, el conocimiento nos enriquece.
