    Basic Plot Story

Arata Kaizaki, 27 years old, is unemployed and unable to find a job. To get by, he works a part-time job at a convenience store. One day, a mysterious person named Ryo Yoake offers him a deal: if he works as a test subject for ReLIFE Laboratory for one year, they will arrange a job for him. The task he is asked to do is a very interesting one.

    My Review

In one word, I would say this is the best anime I have ever watched. The thing I liked most about this anime is that the characters are written very beautifully. The aspect of friendship feels absolutely amazing. The animation is also fantastic. The piano sound BGM was a bit jarring at the start, but as I got attached to the story, the BGM started feeling more and more amazing. The soundtrack is truly very good.

The opening and ending songs were crafted with great care. Even now, when I listen to the opening with headphones, my eyes somehow well up, and an emotional feeling takes over. The art style mesmerized me. There are some moments that I cannot express in words. Every episode is good, but the final episodes were an intense emotional rollercoaster and left me completely empty by the end. ReLIFE reminded me that life is wonderful, and friends are amazing. If only I could be a test subject for ReLIFE Laboratory.

    My Opinion

I won’t say ReLIFE is a solid 10/10 series. Maybe it’s an 8/10 or 9/10. But the ending was so good that I couldn’t help myself. Yes, it’s a masterpiece.

Though ReLIFE’s story seems simple, it’s not that simple. It’s a high school romance anime with some sci-fi elements and keeps a mystery until the end about what’s going to happen. It also gives many life lessons. It’s the kind of anime that, if you’re in a bad mood, you can start watching without any expectations, and a slight smile will appear on your face, I’m sure. The comedy works very well, and the entire series has a very innocent vibe.

    4 OVA Episodes Review

The best aspect of this series is that all the characters are lovable. But in the OVAs, everyone except the two main characters was ignored. There was no intention to answer what happened to them. My heart couldn’t accept this at all. Haha, but it’s okay. Because covering so much in four episodes isn’t possible. In that sense, the studio did a fine job. I felt satisfied. To those who have watched ReLIFE but haven’t seen the four OVA episodes yet, I’d say, please watch them. You’ll get a Your Name-like feel. And yes, the budget was very low, which will be noticeable, but it’s still good.

If you haven’t watched ReLIFE, you’re missing a gem. It’s one of the best slice-of-life anime.

At the end I would say, why is this anime so underrated.

Hello everyone, dear friends of The Anime Realm community. I hope you are feeling great today... this time I want to share with you all a new review of a series that I saw some time ago, but that was very important for me at the time, because I identified myself a lot with the things that happened in this story. So today I will tell you about my opinions about the anime ReLIFE. This anime left me with many emotions, it made me laugh and in some other moments it allowed me to reflect deeply about certain topics. It is one of those series that have a special charm... they present a story that could be a little short, but I felt it was very complete... As I was saying, I feel that this anime surprised me in many aspects, and I am sure that many of you will find that special something in it if you give it a chance.
The plot starts with Arata, a 27 year old man who has lost the direction of his life, I'm sure many of us, came to feel that way, or we probably do, right. He is stuck in a loop of low paying jobs and feels he has no future in Japanese society.. this is something quite common for many young adults in Japan, however, his life takes an unexpected turn when he meets a young guy who is a representative of a secret project called ReLife.. this young guy offers Arata the chance to go back in time, literally. Giving him some sort of medicine or pill that will rejuvenate him to the point of being 17 years old again, so that he can re-experience high school life and have a new perspective with which he can change his future.
The premise sounds simple and a bit crazy, but I think the concept of “starting over” carries an emotional weight that the anime manages to explore in a very good way. Through the 13 main episodes and the 4 ovas that conclude the story, ReLIFE takes us on a journey through the difficulties of adolescence and the regret we may have when we reach adulthood. We are presented with two stages that sometimes are not fully understood until they have already been lived, but are very necessary for each person and can shape our lives in a way that we may not have expected.

One of the strong points of this series is that we see how the protagonist, with his adult mind and some more years of experience, faces the reality of being a teenager again... throughout the episodes, we will appreciate how he tries to adapt to an environment that in theory should be familiar to him, but it is not at all. The difficulties of studying, socializing and fitting in with a group of teenagers who are concerned about problems that to an adult's eyes seem trivial, but for them are the center of their universe, becomes a great challenge for this character, there is a certain interesting contrast of ages that is handled brilliantly in the series, with very funny situations, with Arata thinking like an adult when he should behave in a certain way as a teenager, having to act many times in a way that may not be the one that comes naturally to him... this ends up being a funny resource that does manage to get some laughs out of you.
There are also moments where the adult side of Arata has a unique ability to offer honest advice to his classmates as they face their own insecurities... I consider him a character that while he seems a bit silly at first, he ends up being very complex. He learns from his mistakes and I think that's exactly what makes him more relatable... one of the surprises I got while watching this anime is the depth with which the issues of the Japanese work system are addressed, it's not just about Arata's personal redemption, but this story also serves as a subtle critique of how Japanese society perceives success and failure...

Arata's story is that of someone who was forever labeled as a “failure” after leaving his previous job due to a certain traumatic event, and has since struggled to integrate back into a society that seems to look down on him somewhat, and this causes him to constantly fail. This focus on all those job expectations and societal pressure to “fit in” is something that resonated strongly with me, as it is something I have experienced in some way.

This anime makes it clear that life is not simply a straight path and that success has no universal definition, but shows us how one “mistake” can perhaps taint a person's future, something that feels quite unfair, but is a sad reality that is very present in Japanese work culture.. this criticism makes the series feel much more mature than it appears at first glance. For me, the real heart of this series also lies in all the interesting relationships that Arata forms throughout his “second adolescence” we see how he meets the shy Chizuru and also befriends the friendly Oga, among others, each character has their own internal conflicts that they resolve throughout the series. I feel that the way these secondary characters evolve through interactions with the main character and each other were great, especially Chizuru, who I found to be a fascinating character and quickly became one of my favorites.
She is a girl who is socially awkward and struggles to understand human emotions a bit better, which makes her a person who is easy to empathize with, the relationship she forms with Arata builds gradually and naturally, avoiding any kind of cliché coming from other types of genres... I think their dynamic in this series feels really authentic and we can see how they both help each other to be able to grow and be better. This is something that I quite liked, as it doesn't feel forced, but rather the group of friends that is forming really could be formed in any type of institution.

And well, speaking of the secondary characters, it's worth noting that they also get their moment to shine... this series takes its time to explore all those conflicts of school life, academic rivalries, romantic insecurities, and the desire for social acceptance. While at times the drama can seem a bit over the top, it's always interesting how the main thing comes back to focus on the message of ReLIFE, i.e. the importance of learning from mistakes and taking advantage of safe opportunities. As for the technical aspects, for example, the animation here in this anime is not the most impressive of all.. it has a clean, affectionate style that fits well with the light, emotional tone the anime is trying to convey, the facial expressions are funny, entertaining, and the comic scenes are very well animated..
The color palette is vibrant, but not overwhelming at all, which makes it an easy series to watch.. it has normal, decent animation, I liked it, it delivers. I also liked the music quite a lot... both the opening and the endings seemed to me to give a unique touch to the series... also the soundtrack in the episodes have certain melodies that are very nice and that serve perfect to accompany, and achieve establish the right atmosphere, this I always appreciate...

ReLife is an anime that strikes a perfect balance between comedy, drama, and teaching, with characters that are sure to make you laugh and make you think at the same time. Despite being a slice of life/school type anime, it feels very fresh and different, with a premise and approach that focuses on much more adult themes, such as failure, redemption, and finding purpose in life. I give it a 9/10 rating. At times the pacing can be a bit slow, and the ending, while satisfying, will probably leave you wanting to see much more.
As I was saying, this anime has only one season, and then, some years later, they finished the story through some ovas, so it feels like it was a bit short, but I have to be thankful that they at least bothered to finish this story. So don't forget, if you decide to watch it, don't look for a second season, because you won't find it... on the contrary, look for the final ovas that adapt the end of this story. I consider it a series that can make you rethink your own decisions and how to face certain obstacles in life.... It has an interesting mix that certainly invites you to value time and appreciate opportunities, both the first and the second, so it's a series that I would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to be entertained and at the same time reflect. And well, that's all for today. I'll leave you the opening of this anime down here... see you in the next reviews. Take care. Bye Bye.

Bye Bye.

  3. Let's Take A Look At ReLife@youloseagain660d

ReLife is one of those series that is hard to tell which is better between the Manga and the Anime series. If I am honest, I actually can't decide. They were both pretty damn amazing and kept the same feeling for me through both adaptations.

I did read the Manga first and from start to finish it is brilliant. How they translated it on to the screen was perfection as well. Sadly though, it is a series I would love to read and watch again without knowing what happens. There are parts that did get me right in the feels, and being the big macho man that I am (lies) it actually made me feel for the characters. I felt their pain and disappointments, but also when things went well I genuinely felt happy for them. Which is something that rarely ever happens to me!

The story starts with Arata Kaizaki, the 27 year old who is bouncing around between jobs after quitting his first proper job. The responsibilites of being an adult, the nasty and ugly side of corporate life and the sheer harshness of life, really took it's toll on Arata.

One night while returning home from his part time job, Arata is approached by Ryou Yoake, a member of the ReLife Research Institue. Ryou offers Arata a once in a lifetime opportunity, the chance to go back and change his life for the better. All he has to do is take the mysterious pill that this complete stranger is offering him!

Arata awakens the next day to find that he has changed back into a 17 year old! Along with this fun discovery, Arata finds that he is now part of an experiment and must pass high school all over again as a transfer student for one year. He believes that this will be the easiest thing ever, but he soon finds out just how much has changed in the 10 years since he was last in high school.

    ¡𝐇𝐞𝐲, 𝐇𝐢𝐯𝐞!

Personally I watch a variety of genres, however, unlike the series or doramas that I watch constantly, in anime I'm more of a Slice of Life and school life preferably. I think it's great how they can create appealing stories of the basic or most common problems of adolescence, either in their personal or school lives, they always make me get attached to a character, make me reflect on past actions or identify with someone, which is like a breath of fresh air.

ReLIFE is a rather sober anime in the slice of life category. It was recommended to me by a close friend, and I decided to give it a chance, as I hadn't watched anything for a while out of my own interest. It tells the story of Arata Kaizaki, a 27 year old unemployed man who meets Ryo Yoake, a member of the ReLife research institute, who offers him to be a guinea pig for his latest project: a drug that will make him look like a 17 year old student, his adventure will begin when he learns that he has to go back to high school, having a second chance to rectify his past mistakes.

Released during the spring of 2016 it perhaps didn't get the attention it deserved because of the huge success of Boku no hero at the time, but this TMS Entertainment produced story is an adaptation of a manga with an interesting presentation of problems. It has several gaps that could enhance the experience, but I focused more on what its characters had to offer, which I appreciated quite a bit.

Arata represents very well the common NiNi that abound in a society in which they fail to adapt for different situations and end up living on temporary jobs or their relatives, something that no one wants to live, but that can end up happening despite the efforts. Our protagonist shows us ways to face such a situation far from the prejudices conceived in an interactive way, presenting a kind and thoughtful personality, which even at his age is still in the process of learning. The truth is that you never stop learning.

This plot has a mix of other genres such as comedy, school life and romance, although without focusing on any one for too long, rather they are complements to keep other sub-plots of the characters interesting. Chizuru, a student quite applied but without any communicative skills, Arata, another applied student with personality problems and Ohga, a gentle and striking boy lacking in expressing his feelings, are the ones who will steadily give movement to the story and will develop changes full of experiences and empathy.

The series is quite simple at the animation level and handles a very clean conceptual art, its development is understandable with a direct message to self-confidence and those around you. It focuses a lot on the versatility of thought, thanks to Arata who, not being a real teenager, does not show the "traditional age" fears and prejudices, so his approach and vision is much more complete.

I recommend it, even though it could be better, I was moved by its plot, and I liked its development. This anime consists of a live-action of the same name aired in 2017 and later 4 OVA's were released in order to give closure to the story under the name of *ReLIFE Kanketsu-hen.

  6. Anime review: ReLife@thatanimesnob3123d

ReLife is yet another show that is more about themes that execution. As long as you like its premise and find the characters likable, it doesn’t matter how it plays out. For example, many people found it very relatable because they could really understand the problems the characters are facing. I found nothing relatable in it; I hated high school and the idea of having to relive it is horrifying.

But first things first. The premise is about a NEET who is given the chance to become younger with super technology and go back to high school. Supposed, the only way he can find meaning in adult life is by repeating the boring and aimless routine of going every day to the same place and learning about things he will forget as soon as the exams are over, while being surrounded by people with half his knowledge and experience.

The premise completely ridiculous. If you have psychological problems, you go to a psychiatrist, you join a therapy group, or you talk about it with friends and family. You don’t run back to a lifestyle when all your needs were taken care by adults and the worst thing that could possibly happen to you is your school club losing in some competition.

My point is, the show pretends to be about healing one’s mental wounds, when it’s closer to escapism, not any different from most other anime that take place in the golden years of one’s life. Which for some reason is high school, where everybody is a hormone crazy asshole, and not elementary school when everything is simple and the whole world is a magical playground. Why ain’t those years the most relatable?

I will tell you why. Because no sex. We can’t have romantic interests and intercourse without being sleazy pedophilia. The truly most relatable years are sacrificed for the sake of shipping wars and sexual tension, the stuff that attract most people to anime. I mean, hearing about the premise of the series you would immediately expect the protagonist to be constantly trying to have sex with girls half his age. That’s what the average male would try to do first, if he is amongst naïve and easily exploitable schoolgirls. But, just like in any non-hentai series, nothing happens besides a lot of cock-teasing.

Of course that’s not how the show is presenting itself as. Since we see everything from the perspective of an adult, means that everything is far more self-aware about what is going on. Which is completely not like any other school comedy, since those are written and voiced by teenagers thus are not self-aware, am I right? Having an adult amongst teenagers is nothing more than a running joke. Oh look, he is not allowed to smoke or drink alcohol, so funny. And look, he gets tired way faster during gymnastics, this is hilarious.

What’s even worse is that the show is hardly about the protagonist retracing his footsteps. Most episodes are about normal teenagers having typical teenager problems you can find in any run of the mill series with a school in it. The very theme is not explored much.

What’s even worse than that is the magic pills which are used for kick-starting the plot. I find nothing relatable in a premise that is based on a ludicrous usage of high-tech. I mean, holy shit, you discovered a drug that makes people look young. This could revolutionize the cosmetics industry and open up a dozen philosophical schools of thought, concerning the importance of aging when it’s no longer visible. The entire human history would change forever! And instead of that, they use it for letting a few NEETs run back to high school, with the hopes of becoming better people by reliving it.

And the magic technology does not even stop there. No matter what happens, everybody will forget the protagonist after one year. They literally reset everything at the end, so there won’t be any actual repercussions for his actions, and then they insist this is not about escapism. And holy shit, how do they expect people to get better out of this project when they know the friends they made, the experiences they had, and the things they learned will be all wiped out at the end? What kind of a NEET would become a better person this way? He is just going to waste his time not studying or making friends and will instead be fucking school girls. And when it’s all over, he is just going to be an expelled sex offender, begging to be given more pills, so he can continue doing the same shit for eternity.

And wait a second, if you have mind-wiping technology, why are you using it like this instead of taking away the devastating memories from tortured victims, or the memories that made someone a criminal, thus giving them a second chance in a normal life? Why are you instead making hundreds of normal people to forget someone and risk causing some sort of a mental disorder? They did many things together and all of a sudden they won’t be able to remember who was sitting right next to them for a whole year. Hundreds of innocent people will go nuts!

But it’s not like we get a conclusion to realize that, since the show has no ending and there is not much source material out for a second season. There is not going to be a sequel for many years, and by the time it does nobody will care about it anymore. All they give you at the very end is a last moment plot twist about a girl in the class being another guinea pig with the same age as the protagonist. And so conveniently happens to be the one the protagonist tries to have sex with first.

This convenience allows us not to consider him a manipulative asshole who is boning girls half his age. It’s also lazy writing but it’s not like anyone gives a shit about that. All it matters is to be relatable by having an adult pretending to be a teenager and offering shallow meta-commentary about stuff you get in any run of the mill school comedy. Boring!

There were similar anime in the past, all about guiding a hopeless generation, from Great Teacher Onizuka, to Welcome to the NHK. None of them had such illogical stuff in their premise to break the immersion right away. Although they were usually pretty optimistic and naïve, I never felt like they were bullshiting the viewer to this degree. ReLife is just pandering a core audience and then pretends to be smart and different. It’s not, it’s another shitty school comedy with awful messages that go against the very life lessons it’s trying to teach.
