  1. Film Review: Remember the Titans (2000)@drax1113d

    (source: tmdb.org)

What do you do when you are producer of immensely successful action blockbuster, yet at the same time vilified by critics that accuse your films as reduced to lowest common denominator? You might try to win them over by re-enacting heart-warming real life story with important social message. Jerry Bruckheimmer did exactly that when he produced Remember the Titans, 2000 period sports drama directed by Boaz Yakin.

The plot is set in Alexandria, Virginia in 1971, during the time when civil rights movement created great chasm between city’s black and white community, further escalated with the Supreme Court decision mandating inetgration of school previously segregated on racial basis. In order to placate black community, civic leaders recruit Herman Boone (played by Denzel Washington), expert coach from North Carolina, who happens to be black, to lead football team in recently integrated T. C. Williams High School. This represents painful blow for school’s white coach Bill Yoast (played by Will Patton), but also to white students who threaten that would rather leave school than allow themselves to be coached by a black man. Knowing that many of those boys would lose opportunity for sports scholarships, Yoast swallows his pride and agrees to Boone’s offer of continuing work as his assistant. Two of them begin to prepare the team for the season and during those preparations that would have to work not only differences between themselves, but also between black and white team members. Despite initial difficulties, when the season starts T. C. Williams team begins with a series of incredible victories. This gradually makes both black and white citizens to see the team as their pride and joy and Titans become symbol of successful racial integration. However, just before their greatest triumph, team is struck by tragic event that would represent its greatest challenge.

Story about overcoming racial prejudice and triumph over adversity presented vision of America as Americans would like to imagine. As such, Remember the Titans appealed not only to ordinary Americans, leading to very good results at box office, but also to President Clinton and other members of political establishment that were praising Yakin’s work. Script by Gregory Allen Howard, on the other hand, sticks firmly to formula and cliches and, in a old Hollywood tradition, sacrifices a lot of historical accuracy for the sake of melodrama. Yakin as director doesn’t offer anything remarkable, but his work is solid and allows audience to enjoy it the film. The best work belongs to cast, most notably to Denzel Washington who, by that time, could play charismatic authority figures in his sleep. His efforts are helped by always dependable character actor Will Patton, while Wood Harris and Ryan Hurst are effective in the role of teenagers who must find way to become effective team mates. But the most pleasant surprise is young Hayden Panettiere as Yoast football-obsessed daughter. Remember the Titans, despite its manipulative nature, is well-made and entertaining film that might help restore at least some faith in humanity.

  2. CineTv Contest: Remember The Titans (2000)@marriot54641128d

    Wikipedia

This movie I'm about to review today on this week's contest is one movie that I'll term as "Uniting Hearts, Inspiring Change". Because that's just how I felt after seeing the movie. It's is one beautiful inspirational movie.

In a world where we're divided by race, one particular football team strived to challenge and change that status quo. "Remember the Titans, (2000)" is one a cinematic masterpiece which was directed by Boaz Yakin and was released in the year 2000. That's about decades ago. This particular movie will take you on an unforgettable journey through the rough roads of triumphs and tribulations of a racially divided high school football team in 1970s Virginia faced or passed through.

With its powerful and incredible performances, very compelling narrative, and with a timeless message of unity, this movie stands out as a shining example of how the power of sport, especially American football, can bridge even the deepest gap.

Plot: "Remember the Titans" is a movie based on a real life story of a team named T.C. Williams High School's football team. This team faced various racial discrimination and abuses following the closure of two schools. Denzel Washington played brilliantly the character of Coach Herman Boone, as he is tasked with leading the team through this rigorous transformation.

As the racial tensions grow and run high and community resistance becomes an obstacle trying to tear them apart, Coach Boone, along with his counterpart Coach Bill Yoast played by Will Patton, must scaled through the storms and race against racism to inspire the players to rise above prejudice and become a united force on the field and off the field.

It is one movie that teaches us that unity and strength can be found in diversity, and that by embracing our differences, we can create a more inclusive and harmonious world.

Casts and Crew I must commend the zeal the whole cast in the movie put in to make it one great emotionally inspiring movie. You could literally feel what every cast was feeling at a given scene. And the film's casting is nothing short of exceptional.

With Denzel's playing of Coach Boone is a tour de force. He radiates strength, determination, and his unwavering belief in the true power of unity.

Will Patton too delivered quite beautifully. He gave a nuanced performance as Coach Yoast, adding the very depth needed to the story with his own struggles and his journey of growth.

The other casts in the movie, talented young actors such as Ryan Hurst, Wood Harris, and Hayden Panettiere, infuse the required ingredient needed to the movie with genuine authenticity, spirit and heart, making each character relatable, feel-able and memorable.

My General Thoughts On The Movie: "Remember the Titans" is inspirational in every sense. The movie seamlessly blends, hard-hitting every social commentary with its own moments of humor, humanity, and hope. It also tackles the strong issues of racism, prejudice, and discrimination in full force. Viewers have no choice but to be confronted on screen with the uncomfortable realities of our times. However, it does so with ease and grace and smooth sensitivity, at the end it delivers its powerful message, which is unity, compassion, and the transformative power of working together as a team.

Right from the opening scenes to its heart-pounding, adrenaline game sequences, "Remember the Titans" keeps the audience fully glued, engaged and emotionally invested in it. The tension between characters, the evolving relationships between teammates fills the viewer with a rich combination of emotions that effortlessly leaves a lasting impact.

The pacing of the movie is impeccable and just the right amount needed. Balancing intense football action with poignant personal life moments, at the same time still maintaining it's sense of urgency and purpose.

The cinematography did well too. It beautifully captured the essence of the 1970s era, soaking the viewers in an atmosphere and social climate of the set time. I loved the vibrant colors, the retro fashion they gave the movie. A true depiction of the 70s era and again the nostalgic feels you get from the soundtrack. It is just like transporting you back in time, enhancing the originality of the story. The incredible attention to slightest details.

So this review should be a recommendation to all lovers of good movies. Remember the titans is worth your time.

  3. [Films Critics] Remember the Titans@jsxchemistry2437d

The movies with sports themes are undoubtedly my favorite because they generate a natural emotional response, especially when they are seasoned with racial or dramatic themes that increase the intensity of the story making it more credible and above all mature. One of those stories is without a doubt Remember the Titans, a film that makes use of sport as its main element and shows us in detail the way in which a group of young people managed to defeat racism and unite a people under the unbridled song of victory, a group of young people who joined as brothers and got everything they wanted to do.

    # # Going deeper into story. # Remember the Titans is a film that lets us explore the true story of one of the most successful college football teams in history, a team that was formed through sacrifice, discipline and acceptance. The plot lets us see the whole process of union of a group of young white boys who had to accept as part of their college football team a group of young black boys who by the work of "fate" joined them under the leadership of a new coach with the fervent goal of winning and being the best in the country. Do not think that everything was easy after all the story is set in an era where freedom of speech and class was not common, an era full of racism and social prejudices that dictated the standards of society. Basically through the film we see how a group of young people, black and white, manage to bond under the command of a tough and disciplined coach without any filters when it comes to acting, a coach who forced them to bond through psychological strategies that allowed them to return to the group of young people in brothers of different colors. #

    # That is precisely what makes this film intense and interesting, the constant class struggle that is reflected in young athletes but that little by little we see fall thanks to the success of a team that was able to unite people of all classes and colors, different people who through the furor of the victory managed to live together in peace. But do not believe that this is only an intense film about the struggle and victory over racism, this is also a film with tremendous sporting passages where we see the path that must have taken a team of young people to win and be respected by all.

A plot where not everything is victory, racism and struggle; this is also a film full of emotion reflected in the feeling of brotherhood that a group of young people developed and had to protect, a group of young people who joined outside the camp to share important moments and moments of sadness where tragedy hit them. This is undoubtedly a film that manages to make several stories work in the same atmosphere.

    # # The Titans # Undoubtedly the highest point of this film is the American football team, as they are the driving element of the plot, these young men are who throughout the film highlight all the good and bad aspects of people. The way in which the scriptwriters designed characters with different personalities so that we have a wide range of opinions is sensational and make us connect in a fantastic way with the story. Here we do not have a cliché character, in this film athletes are exposed as people off the field, people who must constantly face intense realities that affect their performance in the field but in the end make them stronger and above all capable of achieving anything. The fact that the film is from the 2000 year allows us to see brilliant and recognized actors of today shining in incredible roles with performances that marked the tempo of the plot filling it with unforgettable moments. This film does not lower its tone at any time, is basically a complete festival of high notes where we will always be witnessing something memorable, something that contributes to the story is different and exciting. #

    # Not only the work of the young people who play the titans is great, but also Denzel Washington characterizing the coach is something vital and incomparable, he becomes the father figure of a group of young people with problems that needed discipline and that someone believed in them, Washington manages to extract the best of the young people forcing them to be better through union and brotherhood. The way in which this man partially transforms himself into an unbreakable, hard man, but who loves his players is fascinating, because it makes different nuances of a perfectly constructed character stand out. # # Final Thoughts. # Without a doubt this is a film that is in my top of films because it manages to show a deeper side of sport, turning it into a determining element for the union and coexistence of the classes that regularly hate each other and are at war with each other. This film undoubtedly constitutes a great sample of what success and victory can do with the most closed minds, minds that are forced to change and adapt to the general clamour.

This is a film that using a very well constructed plot through racism and sport manages to make an outstanding social critique focusing on more positive elements, thus allowing the plot to be enjoyed with intense moments that do not tarnish it but make it better.

An excellent script combined with very good performances and sports scenes make this film a real jewel worthy of being seen hundreds of times.

    My Score: 8,4/10
