Rush Hour

It is high time one should say something about the unpleasant happening going on currently between Russia and Ukraine. Yeah, I know that this should be a movie review on an action movie but guess what? When I decided to brainstorm on an interesting movie that is fully action packed, the first movie that popped into my mind was the movie Rush Hour created by Ross LaManna and directed by Brett Ratner. Also, I must say a big shout out to @namiks for inspiring me to link my movie review to the current situation between Russia and Ukraine.

The movie Rush Hour is filled with lots of funny scenes and mind-blowing action, because of the presence of two talented actors as the lead characters in person of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. These are two iconic personalities known for their brilliant performance in various Hollywood movies which has made them one of the popular and well respected actors in the world as of today. Their outstanding roles in the movie Rush Hour is not what makes the movie a must watch for me every single time, it is the way they are able to combine action and comedy at the same time, which has gradually become a recurring preoccupation in contemporary movies of today. Directors and producers now seek to fuse in a bit of comedy into their movies in order to avoid making the thematic atmosphere of the movie too serious for their viewers, thereby giving the viewers a glimpse or taste of comic relief by providing comic-relief characters or acting out serious scenes in funny ways, just for the purpose of keeping the feelings flowing. A funny scene in the movie Rush Hour that the creator and director makes use of to send across a message that “war cannot be used to solve anything” is the scene where Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker dance and sing the song “war, huh yeah, what is used for? Absolutely not!!!! which was initially sang by the American singer and song-writer, Edward Starr.

Now, this scene is what remains constant in my head whenever I think of the movie Rush Hour. As funny as the scene maybe, it actually can be used to relate to the crisis the world is experiencing today through the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. It simply boils down to the fact that war can’t solve anything if you really take time to look at it. Instead it will only cause more damage and ruin more lives either directly or indirectly. Directly in the sense that people will die for a cause that could be solved diplomatically and indirectly in sense that those who are still alive after the crisis will not find it easy to move on after the tragedy they have encountered.

The action comedy film centers on two police officers, one from the Chinese People’s Armed Police Force and the other from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Jackie Chan plays Chief Inspector Lee, the Chinese cop from Hong Kong and Chris Tucker plays Detective James Carter from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Together, these two build a bond that is stronger than friendship, something like a brotherly bond which plays a major role in the development of their partnership and fighting crimes. At first, they both started off on the wrong foot because of the interracial factor which played a major barrier in their communication. Detective James Carter assumes on their first encounter that Inspector Lee does not speak English because he is Chinese and has probably spend most of his lifetime in China speaking Chinese. But unknown to Detective James Carter, the Chinese guy actually speaks English, which took a while for the Detective to realize because he failed to ask. But the mission of rescuing the Chinese Ambassador’s daughter and bringing down the perpetrator of the kidnap were the main reasons that force Detective James and Inspector Lee to work together.

The movie which was released for theatrical viewing from 1998 to 2007, was a huge success at the box office, bagging in a gross total of $245,300,000 US Dollars worldwide because of Director Brett Ratner’s brilliant idea to include Jackie Chan’s marital art skills he had seen from Jackie Chan’s previous movies. The movie also includes the lovely female actress, Late Elizabeth Pena who played the role of Detective Tania Johnson. Elizabeth Pena was a Latin actress who built a name for herself in the movie industry by appearing in several movies like El Super, Times Square, They All Laughed, Crossover Dreams, Hill Street Blues, Crossover Dreams and many more. In the movie Rush Hour, she exhibited brilliant acting by showing the feminine power women have within them because of their high emotional intelligence of things and she displays this when she tells Detective Carter to man up and stop acting like baby. Elizabeth Pena did not only establish herself as a renowned actress, she was also a founding member of the Hispanic Organization for Latin Actors. The Hispanic Organization for Latin Actors is an organization built in the 1975 for actors and actresses with an Hispanic background and happen to reside in the United States of America as well . For the purpose of promoting the Hispanic culture, traditions and education, this organization was founded and the organization also harnesses the power of media and entertainment to enhance the service and works of Hispanic actors and actresses.

In Conclusion...

Rush Hour can be considered to be an old movie due to the release date but I tell you, the movie is the bomb when it comes to premium action, comedy, suspense and showcasing the irrelevance of war and I will forever stand by these words. For me, the actors, scenes and the funny reactions from Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker in the movie will always remain amusing and entertaining to me even if I can wholeheartedly narrate every single scene from the beginning to the end, because of the numerous times I’ve watched. So it will only be appropriate to say, I am glad Ross Vaughan and Brett Ratner made a movie called Rush Hour , cause it did a good job as the movie to watch during family night.

Además, debo agradecer a @namiks que me haya inspirado para relacionar mi crítica de la película con la situación actual entre Rusia y Ucrania.

La película Rush Hour está llena de escenas divertidas y de acción alucinante, gracias a la presencia de dos actores de gran talento como protagonistas en la persona de Jackie Chan y Chris Tucker. Se trata de dos personalidades emblemáticas conocidas por su brillante actuación en varias películas de Hollywood, lo que les ha convertido en uno de los actores más populares y respetados del mundo en la actualidad. Sus extraordinarios papeles en la película Rush Hour no es lo que hace que la película sea una visita obligada para mí cada vez, sino la forma en que son capaces de combinar la acción y la comedia al mismo tiempo, lo que se ha convertido gradualmente en una preocupación recurrente en las películas contemporáneas de hoy en día. Directamente, en el sentido de que la gente morirá por una causa que podría resolverse diplomáticamente, e indirectamente, en el sentido de que a los que siguen vivos después de la crisis no les resultará fácil seguir adelante tras la tragedia que han vivido.

Rush Hour puede considerarse una película antigua debido a la fecha de estreno, pero os digo que la película es la bomba en lo que respecta a la acción de primera calidad, la comedia, el suspense y la exhibición de la irrelevancia de la guerra, y mantendré siempre estas palabras. Para mí, los actores, las escenas y las divertidas reacciones de Jackie Chan y Chris Tucker en la película seguirán siendo siempre divertidas y entretenidas para mí, incluso si puedo narrar de todo corazón cada una de las escenas desde el principio hasta el final, debido a las numerosas veces que la he visto. Así que sólo cabe decir que me alegro de que Ross Vaughan y Brett Ratner hayan hecho una película llamada Rush Hour , porque hizo un buen trabajo como película para ver durante la noche en familia.
