Hola Hivers, es un placer estar de nuevo reportandome con otro post muy diferente a lo que estoy acostumbrada pero que tenía mucho tiempo dándole vueltas en mi mente hasta que por fin me animé a redactar sobre ello y compartirlo con ustedes.
Como sabrán la Human Society International (HSI) creo este cortometraje en animación Stop-motion (El Extraño Mundo de Jack, Coraline y la puerta Secreta, etc.) ayudándose de la dirección de Taika Watiti y contando con las voces de Zac Efron y Ricky Gervai. Se volvió increíblemente viral debido al tema tan sensible y crudo que toca el cual es la crueldad animal en laboratorios cosméticos, sin duda un vídeo desgarrador que cuando lo vi no pude evitar llorar por lo fuerte y realista que mostraron al pequeño conejo Ralph y su vida siendo un animal de pruebas.
Quise dar mi opinión al respecto a la vez que profundizar un poco en este tema más allá del vídeo en si. Sin más que decir...

Hi Hivers, it's a pleasure to be back reporting with another post very different from what I'm used to but that I had a long time thinking about it in my mind until I finally decided to write about it and share it with you.
As you may know the Human Society International (HSI) created this short film in stop-motion animation (The Nightmare Before Christmas, Coraline, etc.) with the help of Taika Watiti's direction and the voices of Zac Efron and Ricky Gervai. It became incredibly viral due to the sensitive and raw topic it touches which is animal cruelty in cosmetic laboratories, undoubtedly a heartbreaking video that when I saw it I could not help but cry because of how strong and realistic they showed the little rabbit Ralph and his life being a test animal.
I wanted to give my opinion about it and at the same time to deepen a little in this subject beyond the video itself. Without further ado...

¿De qué trata el cortometraje?
Este video del tipo falso documental que dura 3 minutos nos muestra a un conejo de testeo llamado Ralph que nos da una especie de entrevista o recorrido acerca de su vida siendo sujeto de pruebas para los diferentes químicos y sustancias que se usan en la industria de cosméticos. Es un corto animado por stop-motion que muestra la cruel realidad que se viven en la mayoría de los laboratorios donde desarrollan las sustancias para champú, maquillaje, cremas corporales, perfumes, etc.
What's the short film about?
This 3-minute fake documentary type video shows us a test rabbit named Ralph who gives us a kind of interview or tour about his life being a test subject for different chemicals and substances used in the cosmetics industry. It is a stop-motion animated short film that shows the cruel reality that is lived in most of the laboratories where they develop substances for shampoo, makeup, body creams, perfumes, etc.

Ralph nos narra que lo que hacen con el día a día es completamente normal para el, lo considera su único propósito de vida ya que no conoce nada mejor y cuenta que no le importa estar haciendo eso ya que así brinda a los humanos todos los productos que tenemos en nuestro baño. La crudeza radica en que mientras el conejo nos narra esto su rostro denota tanta tristeza y soledad, ya que a pesar de ser todo lo que conoce no quiere decir que sea feliz haciéndolo.
Ralph tells us that what they do on a daily basis is completely normal for him, he considers it his only purpose in life since he doesn't know any better and he says that he doesn't mind doing that since he provides humans with all the products we have in our bathroom. The rawness lies in that while the rabbit narrates us this his face denotes so much sadness and loneliness, since despite being all he knows does not mean that he is happy doing it.

El trata de tomar a la ligera el hecho de estar severamente lastimado por tantas pruebas que han hecho en el pero en su rostro es claro que está sufriendo y que sin duda el desearía tener una vida mejor y sana pero considera que su propósito es ser un sujeto de testeo y por lo tanto no tiene sentido aspirar a algo mejor. Esto se confirma cuando el dice que sus padres, amigos, hermanos y hasta sus hijos también nacieron y murieron siendo conejos de testeo, por eso lo mismo le toca a el ya que no es diferente de todos ellos.
He tries to make light of the fact that he is severely injured by so many tests that have been done on him but on his face it is clear that he is suffering and that no doubt he wishes he had a better and healthy life but he considers that his purpose is to be a test subject and therefore there is no point in aspiring to something better. This is confirmed when he says that his parents, friends, siblings and even his children were also born and died as test rabbits, so it is the same for him since he is no different from all of them.
El Mensaje
El mensaje que yo interprete, es que la narrativa de Ralph es una representación de como nosotros pensamos en realidad de los animales de testeo, pensamos que son seres inferiores a nosotros y por consiguiente no hay gran problema en hacerles pasar dolor y sufrimiento ya que consideramos que ese es su propósito.
The Message
The message I interpreted, is that Ralph's narrative is a representation of how we actually think of test animals, we think they are inferior beings to us and therefore there is no big problem with putting them through pain and suffering as we consider that to be their purpose.

Las expresiones de Ralph son una representación de la realidad que deberíamos notar, su rostro desolado y triste es lo que en realidad sucede con estas criaturas. Viven en confinamiento sirviendo como herramientas para probar químicos peligrosos hasta llegar a un punto donde no recuerdan que su habitad natural no es esa, que deberían estar en campos, praderas, selvas o bosques y no encerrados en una cámara de pruebas.
Ralph's expressions are a representation of the reality that we should notice, his desolate and sad face is what really happens with these creatures. They live in confinement serving as tools to test dangerous chemicals until they reach a point where they do not remember that this is not their natural habitat, that they should be in fields, meadows, jungles or forests and not locked in a test chamber.

Este contraste entre expectativa vs realidad es los que debería hacernos reflexionar acerca de estas prácticas que sin duda no traen más que daño al ecosistema y a su fauna.
This contrast between expectation vs. reality is what should make us reflect on these practices that undoubtedly bring nothing but harm to the ecosystem and its fauna.
La realidad de los animales de testeo
Sin duda alguna, para desarrollar productos ya sean médicos o cosméticos es necesario realizar pruebas ya que no se puede distribuir un producto al público sin conocer sus efectos, tampoco podemos negar que las pruebas han sido en cierta manera beneficiosas ya que gracias a estas se han podido descubrir cantidad de curas y vacunas para muchos tipos de padecimientos. La cuestion está en que para poder realizar estos procedimientos hay que pensar siempre en el bienestar de la criatura que se usa para sujeto de pruebas. Esto se hace siguiendo la regla de las tres R's:
Refinamiento: Asegurar un ambiente libre de estrés y sufrimiento, nada de dolor debe ser inflingido en la criatura y hay que garantizar su seguridad en todo momento.
Reducción: Tratar siempre de usar la menor cantidad de criaturas posibles para estas pruebas, y las que usen para eso deben estar sanas y bien cuidadas.
Reemplazo: Siempre usar otra alternativas primero, y tomar a un animal como sujeto de pruebas solo si es estrictamente necesario y no hay otras opciones por supuesto, respetando las dos R's anteriores.

Lamentablemente muchas industrias sobre todo cosméticas, ignoran las tres R's en favor de comercializar sus productos y nosotros debido a la desinformación terminamos consumiendo estos productos ya sea por su buena calidad o su accesibilidad sin conocer la verdad que se esconde detrás.
The reality of animal testing
Undoubtedly, to develop products, whether medical or cosmetic, it is necessary to carry out tests since it is not possible to distribute a product to the public without knowing its effects. We cannot deny that the tests have been beneficial in a certain way since thanks to these tests it has been possible to discover a number of cures and vaccines for many types of ailments. The question is that in order to carry out these procedures one must always think of the welfare of the creature that is used as a test subject. This is done by following the three R's rule:
Refinement: Ensure an environment free of stress and suffering, no pain should be inflicted on the creature and its safety must be guaranteed at all times.
Reduction: Always try to use as few creatures as possible for these tests, and the ones you use for that should be healthy and well cared for.
Replacement: Always use other alternatives first, and take an animal as a test subject only if strictly necessary and there are no other options of course, respecting the two R's above.

Unfortunately many industries, especially cosmetics, ignore the three R's in favor of marketing their products and due to misinformation we end up consuming these products either because of their good quality or their accessibility without knowing the truth behind them.

Por supuesto, no todo es así de oscuro. Hay muchas industrias también que respetan las tres R's y garantizan que sus productos están libres de crueldad animal, que usan productos completamente inofensivos y no dañinos para la salud y por lo tanto no necesitan testearlos en seres vivos.

Of course, not everything is that dark. There are many industries also that respect the three R's and guarantee that their products are free of animal cruelty, that they use products that are completely harmless and not harmful to health and therefore do not need to test them on living beings.

Estos productos usualmente vienen con un sello o logo oficial que identifica que están libres de crueldad animal y para lograr que una marca consiga algún sello de estos debe pasar la prueba de los 5 años (pasar al menos 5 años de producción sin testeo en animales), aunque estos productos no siempre son accesibles ya sea por su escases, sus precios o que simplemente no llegan a la región donde estamos (en mi país es muy difícil conseguir un producto con algún sello de estos) pero al menos sabemos que existen y en algún momento podremos conseguirlos.
These products usually come with an official seal or logo that identifies that they are free of animal cruelty and in order for a brand to get one of these seals it must pass the 5-year test (at least 5 years of production without animal testing), although these products are not always accessible either because of their scarcity, their prices or simply because they do not reach the region where we are (in my country it is very difficult to get a product with one of these seals) but at least we know they exist and at some point we will be able to get them.
Conclusión
No podemos hacer milagros para detener la crueldad animal debido a que el poder que poseen las industrias es muy grande pero ya conociendo la realidad y teniendo la información adecuada podemos hacer cambios progresivos y poco a poco ir erradicando está situación. El primer paso es estar conscientes de lo que sucede y entender que está mal, correr la voz y lograr que más allá de hacer publicidad comercial se haga llegar el mensaje principal y ese es "la naturaleza y todo lo que la conforma merece respeto" porque gracias al ecosistema es que tenemos equilibro pero lamentablemente nosotros mismos hemos creado un desbalance al poner por debajo de nosotros a la flora y la fauna y usarlos para nuestro beneficio, esto es algo que debemos cambiar.
Conclusion
We can not do miracles to stop animal cruelty because the power that industries possess is very large but already knowing the reality and having adequate information we can make progressive changes and gradually eradicate this situation. The first step is to be aware of what is happening and understand that it is wrong, spread the word and get beyond commercial advertising to get the main message and that is "nature and everything that makes it up deserves respect" because thanks to the ecosystem is that we have balance but unfortunately we ourselves have created an imbalance by putting below us the flora and fauna and use them for our benefit, this is something we must change.
