Plot
The film takes us to the city of Johannesburg, South Africa, where a spaceship has been suspended in the sky. For some time without seeing any alien activity coming out of the ship, the armed forces decide to break through and enter the huge saucer only to find a million insect-like aliens all malnourished and completely disoriented. While they initially received humanitarian aid from the government, they began to roam the city, scavenging through garbage, stealing and trading their alien weapons for cat food (that's right, they love cat food). This brought them rejection and hatred from all over the world, seeing this alien species as troublemakers. The government then decides to gather all the aliens in one place, a militarized and isolated place called "District 9". After several disagreements with the United Nations, this district was left in charge of a private organization called Multi-National United (MNU) and this is where Wikus van de Merwe, our protagonist and field manager of this organization takes action and performs an operation to transfer the aliens to another isolated site called "District 10". But, on the way he will meet an alien very different from the others that will cause him a lot of problems.

Of all the movies I have seen in my life, very few have left me as amazed and shattered at the same time as this film did. A story that illustrates very well and in a surreal way a reality that in the world is seen very often from many years ago until today. With excellent production work as Peter Jackson knows how to do well, with visual effects well ahead of its time and with a script that develops in a deep and well-felt way the main characters of this film; it is no wonder that we are facing one of the biggest hits of the time. It also has action, drama and a very fictional way of accurately depicting how governments and society itself reacts to certain circumstances. The way in which they handle issues such as xenophobia or the discrimination of a species or race alien to ours is shocking to say the least. Apart from entertaining in a very different way from what is normally found in science fiction films, this film also manages to hook each viewer very well, making them feel very identified with both the protagonist and the other characters. This is a very raw film, which I would not recommend to everyone, but it is well worth seeing.

Una historia que ilustra muy bien y de una manera surrealista una realidad que en el mundo se ve muy seguido desde hace muchos años hasta el día de hoy. Con un excelente trabajo de producción como Peter Jackson sabe hacer bien, con unos efectos visuales muy adelantados a su época y con un guión que desarrolla de una forma profunda y bien sentida a los personajes principales de esta película; no es de extrañar que estemos ante uno de los mayores éxitos de la época. También tiene acción, drama y una forma muy ficticia de representar de manera precisa la forma en la que los gobiernos y la misma sociedad reacciona ante ciertas circunstancias. La manera en la que manejan temas como la xenofobia o la misma discriminación de una especie o de una raza ajena a la nuestra es cuanto menos impactante. Aparte de entretener de una forma muy distinta a lo que normalmente se puede encontrar en el cine de ciencia ficción, esta película logra también enganchar muy bien a cada espectador, haciéndolo sentirse muy identificado tanto con el protagonista como con los demás personajes. Esta es una película muy cruda, que no se la recomendaría a cualquiera, pero que vale mucho la pena ver.

But in the end it is the way we see these aliens, the treatment they receive, the way they are excluded from the world that makes us reflect on society itself and the way we see and treat people of other races. But, beyond that, it is the very transition and development of the protagonist, all the suffering and changes he has gone through in his life that teaches us more about this film than the obvious. Personally, it is one of those protagonists that has the best character development that can be found to this day.
Sometimes we complain about our current situation, wishing for something better, a better job or a better life, until everything changes and we fall into a deep hole that we have a hard time getting out of. It is there where we start to miss what we were or what we had in the past, regretting not having made the best decisions of our lives. But all these failures and downfalls are part of our lives and help us to improve and be excellent hosts for others. Without a happy ending, but with a series of lessons that make us think and reason a lot, this movie has everything that any sci-fi movie fan is looking for today. Being also a great classic, this movie is one of those that doesn't bore me every time I watch it on TV. Whether for having an excellent production, an excellent script or excellent characters, this film surely changed the world of cinema completely, with a heartbreaking, deep and quite dramatic story. Raw, bloody, cruel and at the same time fictional, this movie is one of the best I have ever had the privilege to see in my life.

Todo inicia con una supuesta invasión de extraterrestres en los años 80s, un acontecimiento que cambiaría por completo a la humanidad, haciéndolos ver que no están solos en el universo. Y es esto en lo que el director se inspiró para escribir esta película, dándole a su vez un toque de ficción y acción, con momentos emotivos que son prácticamente inolvidables. Pero al final es la forma de ver a estos aliens, el trato que reciben, la forma en la que son excluidos del mundo lo que nos pone a reflexionar acerca de la misma sociedad y la forma en la que vemos y tratamos a las personas de otras razas. Pero, más allá de eso, es la misma transición y desarrollo del protagonista, todo el sufrimiento y los cambios que ha pasado en su vida lo que nos enseña más de esta película que lo evidente. En lo personal, es de esos protagonistas que tienen el mejor desarrollo de personaje que se puede encontrar hasta el sol de hoy.
A veces nos quejamos de nuestra situación actual, deseando algo mejor, un mejor puesto de trabajo o una mejor vida, hasta que todo cambia y caemos en un profundo hoyo en el que nos cuesta mucho salir. Es ahí donde empezamos a extrañar lo que éramos o lo que tuvimos en el pasado, arrepintiéndonos de no haber tomado las mejores decisiones de nuestras vidas. Pero todo estos fracasos y caídas son parte de nuestra vida y nos ayuda a mejorar y ser unos excelentes anfitriones para los demás. Sin un final feliz, pero con una serie de lecciones que nos hace pensar y razonar bastante, esta película tiene todo lo que cualquier fanático del cine de ciencia ficción busca al día de hoy. Siendo también un gran clásico, esta película es de esas que no aburren cada vez que la veo en la televisión. Fuera por tener una excelente producción, un excelente guión o unos excelentes personajes, esta cinta seguramente cambió por completo el mundo del cine, con una historia desgarradora, profunda y bastante dramática. Cruda, sangrienta, cruel y a la vez ficticia, esta película es de lo mejor que he tenido el privilegio de ver en mi vida.

Con efectos visuales y un CGI bastante bien hechos como para pensar que fue estrenada hace ya 15 años, esta película tiene de los mejores trabajos que se pueden encontrar en el cine de la ciencia ficción. En su totalidad, esta película tiene todo lo que un buen cineasta busca ver y disfrutar al día de hoy.
