Hello movie fans. Today I want to talk to you about a classic of both the science fiction genre and the horror genre itself. A jewel at the time criticized but that today has become a cult work for a not small group of fans. This is a movie I've heard a lot about on the internet and I wanted to give it a chance now with this special we have on aliens, invasions and sci-fi style stuff. Functioning as a remake of the then famous 1951 film "The Thing From Another World", this movie was directed by the great John Carpenter, who in turn was a fan of that classic film and decided to recreate it, this time based on the well-known 1938 novel by John W. Campbell Jr. called "Who Goes There?". It stars the then young actor Kurt Russell, along with Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, among others. Although the film was a total failure at the box office, in addition to being the victim of strong criticism at the time, today it is remembered as a hidden gem of the genre, with practical effects and a level of suspense and graphic horror that is simply incomparable. Hola fanáticos del cine. El día de hoy les quiero hablar acerca de un clásico tanto del género de la ciencia ficción como del mismísimo género del terror. Una joya en su momento criticada pero que a la fecha de hoy se ha convertido en una obra de culto para un grupo no pequeño de fanáticos. Esta es una película de la cual he escuchado hablar mucho en internet y que quería darle una oportunidad ahora con este especial que tenemos de aliens, invasiones y cosas del estilo de ciencia ficción. Funcionando como remake de la aquel entonces famosa película “The Thing From Another World” de 1951, esta película fue dirigida por el gran John Carpenter, quien a su vez fue fan de dicha cinta clásica y decidió recrearla, basándose esta vez en la conocida novela de 1938 de John W. Campbell Jr. llamada “Who Goes There?”. Está protagonizada por el aquel entonces joven actor Kurt Russell, junto con la participación de Wilford Brimley, T.K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, entre otros. Si bien la película fue un total fracaso en taquilla, además de ser víctima de fuertes críticas en aquel entonces, hoy se recuerda como una joya escondida del género, con efectos prácticos y un nivel de suspenso y horror gráfico que es simplemente incomparable. Plot
The film opens with a few seconds showing us the dark void of space with the credits, and then we see how a computer-made flying saucer flies close to earth about to crash. We then move to what appears to be a very cold place in Antarctica, far away from civilization. In an aerial view of mountains and snow-filled spaces, we see a sled dog being chased by a helicopter, in which there is a gunman trying to shoot the dog, while the dog nimbly dodges and runs towards what appears to be a U.S. research station. Here we meet a group of Americans who see both the dog and the helicopter coming towards them. The animal hides among them while those in the helicopter come rushing down armed with bombs, causing an explosion. The one with the gun approaches the base while firing at the dog, which causes several of the members to be wounded by the bullets. In the end, one responds by firing behind a window into the head of the guy who is not American, apparently. The Americans discover that they are Norwegians and are coming from a base they may have nearby, several miles from where they are and think they may have been victims of insanity from being in this cold, desolate place for too long. The pilot of the team along with a doctor decide to visit the base and find out what happened there, but this visit will not be at all pleasant for our American friends.

Maybe talking about this film now is for those who follow me like taking a huge leap if we compare it with the previous films that I have brought you in recent weeks. The science fiction genre has been one of the most exploited and produced of all in the world of cinema, with a list of tapes that approaches a hundred years of history. But, throughout all these years, very few films of this genre have impacted me as much as this tremendous gem did. And I say this speaking only of the science fiction and horror genre, since this combination has brought us many unforgettable films, but very few manage to generate a level of tension and horror both visually and psychologically as this film did. And if you give it a chance, as I did recently, you will realize how incredible this film is in many aspects.

Cuando hablamos de “clásicos”, ya sea dentro del género de la ciencia ficción como del mismo género del terror, seguramente una de los nombres que más recordarán es el de esta película. “The Thing” es, sin duda alguna, una joya que ha impactado bastante tanto en el mundo del cine como en la misma cultura popular, influenciando muchísimo en obras populares y actuales que seguramente conocemos. Puede que hablar de esta película ahora es para los que me siguen como dar un salto enorme si lo comparamos con las anteriores películas que les he traído en estas últimas semanas. El género de la ciencia ficción ha sido uno de los más explotados y producidos de todos en el mundo del cine, con una lista de cintas que se acerca a los cien años de historia. Pero, a lo largo de todos estos años, muy pocas películas de este género me han impactado bastante como lo hizo esta tremenda joya. Y esto lo digo hablando únicamente del género de ciencia ficción y terror, ya que esta combinación nos ha traído muchas películas inolvidables, pero muy pocas llegan a generar un nivel de tensión y horror tanto a nivel visual como a nivel psicológico como lo hizo esta película. Y es que si le dan una oportunidad, como yo hice hace poco, se darán cuenta de lo increíble que es esta cinta en muchos aspectos.

Let's start by talking about the story we are told in this film, which focuses on a not small group of several members of a U.S. research base located in Antarctica, one of the coldest places in the world. The first few minutes that I have described above put us in context an introduction that for anyone is the strangest. To see two Norwegians in a helicopter armed to the teeth in hot pursuit of a sled dog makes no sense at all. But, as one of the team explains it to us, this may have been due to some sort of hysteria caused by too much time in this cold place. When we visit the base of these crazy Norwegians, that's when the horror begins. We see what seems to be the perfect place for a horror scene, a place completely desolate, abandoned, destroyed and full of blood and ice everywhere, in addition to certain slaughtered bodies and a half-burned one at the entrance. But, what catches the attention of the traumatized Americans is this body resembling a human being, but with long and horrendous limbs and two completely deformed faces.
It is at this point that one begins to think, leaving aside the madness we saw at the beginning and analyzing everything that these researchers are discovering in this abandoned Norwegian base. Personally, I ask myself the following question: Why on earth in this type of movie, instead of leaving things as they are and leaving or burning everything to prevent any disease that has been discovered among all the ice and fossils that must be in this place, the best thing they can think of is to take the deformed and charred body to their base, risking themselves and the other members of the team? But well, these are the typical things we see in this kind of movies. After this "wise" decision and a horrendous series of events not at all pleasant for our team, it is evident the result that comes after and at the end of all this. I understand and accept that, being researchers and Americans, these people have to take the risk of messing with these things. But in this case it is evident that it was their worst decision, a decision that cost them a lot, to be honest. What we learn from all this is one of those lessons that one heard since childhood: "don't mess with what you don't know", or "the curiosity killed the cat".
This film is a clear example that sometimes it is better not to mess with things you don't know. However, it is curiosity itself that motivates us to go beyond what we should and to know more we experiment with things we do not fully understand. Everything we see happening in this film is the result of an investigation, a kind of contact with a species that is obviously not of this world and much less a friendly species, so to speak. This type of creature we see in this film is very different from the typical aliens or green Martians we have seen or talked about in previous science fiction films. Much less is it a bacteria or fungus, no, it is something far, far worse. And it is this that completely captured the attention and horror of more than one generation, watching this film in their homes, with the lights off and without any company. Despite the era, this film contains one of the most horrifying, terrifying and disgusting beings I have ever seen in my life. A creature that tries to adapt and take the form of any living being it has near it to the point of replicating it completely. But it is in the midst of the development of imitation and/or transformation that causes horror to a completely grotesque point.

Empecemos hablando de la historia que nos cuentan en esta película, la cual se centra en un grupo no pequeño de varios integrantes de una base de investigación estadounidense situados en Antártida, uno de los lugares más fríos del mundo. Los primeros minutos que les he descrito arriba nos ponen en contexto una introducción que para cualquiera es de lo más extraña. Y es que ver a dos noruegos en un helicóptero armados hasta los dientes persiguiendo con afán a un perro de trineo es algo que a la vista de todos no tiene sentido alguno. Pero, como nos lo explica uno de los miembros del equipo, esto pudo deberse a una especie de histeria causada por mucho tiempo en este frío lugar. Al visitar la base de estos locos noruegos, es cuando el horror empieza. Vemos lo que parece ser el sitio perfecto de una escena de terror, un lugar completamente desolado, abandonado, destruido y repleto de sangre y hielo por todas partes, además de ciertos cuerpos degollados y uno semicalcinado en la entrada. Pero, lo que les llama la atención a los traumados americanos es este cuerpo parecido al de un ser humano, pero con largas y horrendas extremidades y dos caras completamente deformadas.
Es en este momento en el que uno empieza a pensar, dejando de lado la locura que vimos al principio y analizando todo lo que están descubriendo estos investigadores en esta base noruega abandonada. En lo personal, me pregunto lo siguiente: ¿Por qué rayos en este tipo de películas, en vez de dejar las cosas como están e irse o terminar de quemar todo por cualquier prevención de alguna enfermedad que ha sido descubierta entre tanto hielo y fósiles que deben de haber en este lugar, lo que mejor se les ocurre es llevarse el cuerpo deforme y calcinado a su base, arriesgándose ellos y los demás miembros del equipo? Pero bueno, estas son las típicas cosas que vemos en este tipo de películas. Luego de esta “sabia” decisión y una serie horrenda de sucesos para nada agradables para nuestro equipo, es evidente el resultado que se viene después y al final de todo esto. Entiendo y acepto que, por ser investigadores y americanos, esta gente se tenga que arriesgar en meterse con estas cosas. Pero en este caso es evidente que fue su peor decisión, una decisión que les costó muchísimo, la verdad. Lo que aprendamos de todo esto es una de esas lecciones que uno escuchaba desde pequeño: “no se meta con lo que no conoce”, o “la curiosidad mató al gato”.
Esta película es un ejemplo claro de que a veces es mejor no meterse con cosas que uno no conoce. Sin embargo, es la misma curiosidad ese medio que nos motiva a ir más allá de lo debido y por conocer más experimentamos con cosas que no comprendemos completamente. Todo lo que vemos que ocurre en esta película es el resultado de una investigación, una especie de contacto con una especie que evidentemente no es de este mundo y que mucho menos es una especie amigable, por así decirlo. Este tipo de criaturas que vemos en esta película es muy distinto a los típicos aliens o marcianos verdes que hemos visto o hablado en películas anteriores de ciencia ficción. Mucho menos se trata de una bacteria o un hongo, no, es algo muchísimo peor. Y es esto lo que capturó por completo la atención y el horror de más de una generación, al ver esta película en sus casas, con las luces apagadas y sin ninguna compañía. A pesar de la época, esta cinta contiene uno de los seres más horrendos, aterradores y desagradables que he visto en mi vida. Una criatura que intenta adaptarse y tomar forma de cualquier ser vivo que tenga cerca hasta tal punto de replicarlo por completo. Pero es en medio del desarrollo de imitación y/o transformación lo que causa horror a un punto completamente grotesco.

Although this time it not only answers the typical "are we alone in the universe?" question, but also makes us doubt even our own confidence. What appears to be a very dangerous invader from space is actually a kind of copycat, seeking to perfectly replicate any species of life that exists in the universe. This, coupled with the fact that we are talking about a team of American researchers in the middle of nowhere in Antarctica, does not paint a good picture of what will result in this film. And after realizing what this thing is or what it is trying to be, the Americans begin to doubt and distrust each other, if their partner is really him or an impersonator, an impostor (remember the famous game "Among Us"? Where do you think they were inspired?).
In the middle of all this mess, the trust they have for each other is lost, making them commit the most risky and crazy decisions that can be seen in this movie, letting themselves be carried away by the same anxiety and fear of being replaced. All this theme can make us think a lot about a doubt that strikes me a lot that at the end of this movie made me reason a little: What makes us different from ourselves and a copycat? What do we have or do that makes us different or unique in the universe? This doubt may get us thinking quite a bit, it may even leave us more traumatized than any horrific scene or transformation we see in this movie. Undoubtedly, if this were real, it is alarming how many people could be replaced without us even realizing it. But well, leaving aside all this psychological and existentialist theme, let's go back to the main point of the movie: what was that thing we see from space? What is it really? It is a doubt that the film leaves us with along with its name. But well, whatever it is, there is no doubt that it is one of the worst aliens that exist in the wide world of science fiction cinema.

Si, tal y como toda película de contactos con extraterrestres o cosas por el estilo, nunca falta ese nivel de suspenso psicológico que nos pone a pensar y razonar sobre nuestra propia existencia en este mundo. Aunque esta vez no solo nos responde a la típica pregunta de “¿estamos solos en el universo?”, sino también que nos pone a dudar incluso de la confianza en sí. Lo que parece ser un invasor muy peligroso del espacio es en realidad una especie de imitador, buscando replicar perfectamente a cualquiera especie de vida que exista en el universo. Esto, sumado a que estamos hablando de un equipo de investigadores americanos en medio de la nada en Antártida, no pinta para nada bien lo que resultará en esta película. Y es que luego de darse cuenta de qué es o qué intenta ser esta cosa, los americanos empiezan a dudar y desconfiar entre ellos, si realmente su compañero es de verdad él o un imitador, un impostor (¿se acuerdan del famoso juego de “Among Us”? ¿De dónde creen que se inspiraron?).
En medio de todo este meollo, la confianza que se tienen entre el otro se pierde, haciendo que cometan las decisiones más arriesgadas y locas que se pueden ver en esta película, dejándose llevar por la misma ansiedad y el miedo de ser reemplazados. Todo este tema nos puede poner a pensar bastante en una duda que me llama mucho la atención que al final de esta película me hizo razonar un poco: ¿Qué nos diferencia de nosotros mismos y un imitador? ¿Qué tenemos o hacemos que nos hacen diferentes o únicos en el universo? Esta duda puede que nos ponga a pensar bastante, incluso puede dejarnos más traumados que cualquier escena o transformación horrenda que veamos en esta película. Sin duda alguna, si esto fuera real, es alarmante la cantidad de gente que podrían ser reemplazados sin que nos diéramos cuenta. Pero bueno, dejando de lado todo este tema psicológico y existencialista, volvamos al punto principal de la película: ¿Qué era esa cosa que vemos del espacio? ¿Qué es en realidad? Es una duda que nos deja la película junto con su nombre. With a limited budget only directed to the construction of the creature we see in the film in all its phases, it is spectacular the result we see and how it has aged so well since then. This is not to mention what they spent on what are the explosions we see throughout the film, as well. The sound effects that this movie has give a very very necessary and useful extra plus to every scene and transformation, generating that grotesque and horrifying feeling that we see from this thing. The soundtrack, on the other hand, works as an air freshener worthy of a classic 80s film and more so if it's horror and sci-fi. Overall, if you're a fan of cinema, classics and aliens, you can't miss this gem of the seventh art.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating for the sci-fi, horror and suspense genre.

Para finalizar, hablemos del lado técnico de esta película, la cual recordemos en qué fecha fue estrenada. Es por eso que no nos debe de sorprender de que la calidad que vemos en esta cinta no sea la que acostumbramos a ver en la actualidad. Pero, aún con eso en cuenta, si nos basamos en los efectos prácticos, el uso de cámaras fijas o los planos en movimiento, soy todo un fan. Sobre todo de cómo utilizan estos elementos en esta cinta, la cual la convierte en toda una joya del cine. En una época en la que los efectos hechos por computadora escaseaban bastante, este tipo de películas son muy conocidas por usar efectos prácticos y maquillajes super elaborados. Con un presupuesto limitado únicamente dirigido a lo que es la construcción de dicha criatura que vemos en la película en todas sus fases, es espectacular el resultado que vemos y cómo ha envejecido tan bien desde entonces. Esto sin mencionar lo que gastaron en lo que son las explosiones que vemos a lo largo de la película, también. Los efectos de sonido que tiene esta película le dan un plus extra muy pero muy necesario y útil a cada escenario y transformación, generando esa sensación grotesca y horripilante que vemos de esta cosa. La banda sonora, por otra parte, funciona como un ambientador digno de una cinta clásica de los 80s y más si es de terror y ciencia ficción. En general, si eres fanático del cine, de los clásicos y de los extraterrestres, no te puedes perder de esta joya del séptimo arte.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de ciencia ficción, terror y suspenso.
