Plot
The film begins with a man waking up in a bathtub in a dark room, chained up and completely disoriented. He screams for help, but another person answers him, saying that screaming won't do any good since they are alone there. When the lights come on, we see that they are in a large, old, completely abandoned public bathroom. Both are chained at opposite ends of the room, and right in the middle between them is what appears to be a blood-covered corpse, with a gun in one hand and a mini-cassette player in the other. Let's take a moment to talk about science fiction movies, since October is here. For many, this month may not be that important, but for me, it has become a very special month. And speaking of special things, what could be better than the "Month of Horror" special I have prepared for you? This is something I have done in previous years. This will be the third year I've done it (and the second year doing it here at Hive). Last time, I talked about some horror movies that marked my childhood and pre-teen years, but that was nothing compared to what I have for you this month. Curiously, I became familiar with watching horror movies such as thrillers with gore and things like that. But Saw was something else that I never quite understood. Even today, it may be difficult for me to catch up and fully understand the entire series. And it's not just that, but the way they are made.

Recuerdo haber tenido en mi poder una cinta con las cinco primeras películas de la saga de Saw (lo que actualmente sería la mitad de la saga completa). Curiosamente me familiaricé viendo películas de terror tipo thrillers con gore y cosas por el estilo. Pero lo de Saw fue otra cosa que no terminé nunca de comprender. Aún en la actualidad puede que sea complicado para mí ponerme al día y entender bien toda la saga. Y no solo es eso, sino la forma en la que están hechas.

While I like psychological horror, Saw goes even further by turning its own film series into a complete puzzle due to how messy each film is. When I saw the second, third, and fourth films, I found it more difficult to follow the storyline, and now, more than ten years later, finding out that this first installment isn't even the beginning convinced me that I had no idea what I knew about Saw until now. Maybe if I give it a chance someday in the near future, I'll get a taste for watching the whole saga just to satisfy my curiosity. Surely many will recognize it for the doll riding the little tricycle or for some Hollywood comedy parody made by some brothers with a very dark sense of humor (Scary Movie). Be that as it may, I think it's unlikely that there is anyone in this readership who doesn't know or has never read or heard of this horror gem. The reason I reiterate this is so that you can fully understand the popularity of this work after its theatrical release and its cultural impact.

What many people probably think is a simple gore film with graphic scenes and people dying in rather unpleasant situations is actually something more. It is not just another horror thriller, but a huge puzzle that is worth following and putting together in order to finally understand what is being conveyed by everything that happens in this disgusting place. What fascinates me about this film is that it makes good use of every element, every object in the bathroom where our protagonists find themselves, to tell us a story.

Saw posee una historia que, al igual que toda su saga, es un completo rompecabezas que se va armando a cada minuto, en cada acto para culminar de una manera que es simplemente sorprendente. Conocerlos y conocer al que está detrás de todo esto es vital para poder comprender la magnitud de esta historia. Lo que para muchos seguramente piensan que es una simple cinta gore con escenas gráficas y gente muriendo en situaciones bastante desagradables, es en realidad algo más. No es un thriller de terror del montón, sino un enorme rompecabezas que vale la pena seguir y armar para al final entender lo que se busca transmitir con todo lo que sucede en este asqueroso lugar. Lo que me fascina de esta película es que aprovecha bastante bien cada elemento, cada objeto que hay en dicho baño en el que se encuentran nuestros protagonistas para así contarnos una historia.

We know that one is a freelance photographer and the other a renowned oncologist, while the person who brought them here is a psychopath with a rather twisted view of society. This "game" that the "Jigsaw Killer" is playing is his way of teaching these two victims and the world that life has a much greater value than many people believe it to have. We see how both try to do everything possible to get out of that disgusting abandoned bathroom, but every clue they find only divides them more and more. The worst part is that it's not complex manipulation techniques or tricks to deceive them, but the very truth behind everything, behind both of them, behind each one of them, that divides them. There are also some secondary characters who do not take on much relevance until the end, when everything is revealed and the puzzle is completely put together. They are all just victims of the ingenious tests carried out by our psychopath to reveal who they really are. It's no surprise that Jigsaw is one of the most iconic antagonists of the last century, given everything he has achieved throughout this film series.

While it has the occasional jump-scare, grotesque scenes, and a lot of gore, what definitely grabs people's attention is the way the antagonist ends up executing each plan and each "game" in such an ingenious way that he ultimately gets away with it as usual. And speaking of the ending, once again, the feeling those last few minutes evoke is... complete madness.
Last but not least, let's talk about the audiovisual aspect. It's definitely the best part of the whole movie, as both the visual aspect, with its fixed and moving camera styles, fast cameras, and environments with cold or dark lights and tones, is top-notch. The same goes for the sound effects, which are quite accurate and sometimes loud enough to play with the atmosphere or situation at hand. The quality of the details and the ingenious use of practical effects and makeup deserve a 10. The soundtrack, for its part, is very original, especially when it often sounds like you're listening to heavy rock or something similar. In short, this film is perfect for those who like puzzles and blood.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 in terms of the horror, psychological suspense, gore, and mystery genres.

Si bien tiene uno que otro Jumpscare, escenas grotescas y mucho gore; lo que definitivamente hace que se lleve la atención de la gente es la forma en la que el antagonista termina ejecutando cada plan y cada “juego” de una forma tan ingeniosa para al final salirse como siempre con la suya. Y hablando del final, una vez más, la sensación que causa esos últimos minutos es… una completa locura.
Por último, pero no menos importante, hablemos de su apartado audiovisual. Definitivamente lo mejor de toda la película ya que tanto en el aspecto visual con los estilos de cámaras fijas y en movimiento, cámaras rápidas, ambientes con luces y tonos fríos o oscuros es de lo mejor. Lo mismo sucede con los efectos de sonido, bastante exactos y a veces fuertes como para jugar con el ambiente o la situación del momento. La calidad de los detalles y el uso ingenioso de los efectos prácticos y maquillajes es como para un 10. La banda sonora, por su parte, es muy original y más cuando suena muchas veces como si escucharas rock pesado o algo parecido. En resumen, esta película es perfecta para los que les gustan los acertijos y la sangre.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror, suspenso psicológico, gore y misterio.
