That time has come, the turn was for Shining Girls through Apple TV, a platform that as I have said in other of my posts, is creating high quality productions and I have been more than satisfied with the adaptation. You arrive at the company where you work, you stop in front of your desk, you look a little agitated, you quickly take a look at everything. The pencils are in place, the sheets of paper, the computer, you even look at the ceiling, a leak from the air conditioning duct causes you discomfort. You take a breath to calm your anxiety and go to get a cup of coffee. When you return to your desk another co-worker is sitting at your desk, you ask him what he is doing there and he replies that it is his workplace, your desk is in the other corner. You go to see him and all your stuff is there, what the hell is going on, are you going crazy?
Viewers are going to immediately think that this character is suffering from some kind of disorder. They're going to doubt what he's saying and doing. The other characters that are part of his work and family environment are also going to think that he has problems, because of his strange behavior. Even the police are going to doubt, because she is a survivor of an attempted murder that has left indelible marks, both physically and mentally. Is she crazy? Is it all due to trauma? Is she a reliable narrator? What is the truth?
The first few episodes may be a bit confusing for the viewer accustomed to more conventional and linear stories, but be patient, all will be revealed in due time. Just pay attention to the story.
The sense of loss that the protagonist has, is conveyed to the viewer skillfully, even to me, who had already read the book on which the series is based, I loved that they altered the chronological order that is in the original work and raised small doubts about what the protagonist sees. On an audiovisual level it works and treats the viewer intelligently, showing little by little the main mystery and that they can put together the temporal puzzle that is posed.

Los espectadores van a pensar inmediatamente que este personaje sufre algún tipo de trastorno. Van a dudar de lo que dice y hace. Los demás personajes que forman parte de su entorno laboral y familiar también van a pensar que tiene problemas, por su extraño comportamiento. Incluso la policía va a dudar, porque es una superviviente de un intento de asesinato que ha dejado marcas imborrables, tanto física como mentalmente. ¿Está loca? ¿Se debe todo a un trauma? ¿Es una narradora fiable? ¿Cuál es la verdad?
Los primeros episodios pueden resultar un poco confusos para el espectador acostumbrado a historias más convencionales y lineales, pero hay que tener paciencia, todo se revelará a su debido tiempo. Sólo hay que prestar atención a la historia.
La sensación de pérdida que tiene el protagonista, se transmite al espectador hábilmente, incluso a mí, que ya había leído el libro en el que se basa la serie, me encantó que alteraran el orden cronológico que hay en la obra original y que plantearan pequeñas dudas sobre lo que ve el protagonista. A nivel audiovisual funciona y trata al espectador de forma inteligente, mostrando poco a poco el misterio principal y que puedan armar el rompecabezas temporal que se plantea.
Before I continue with my opinion and the comparison I will make with the original novel, you must ask yourself what is the plot of the series. I made my own synopsis without revealing important details.
What is the plot?
Kirby is a girl working in the archives of the Chicago Sun-Times who always behaves strangely, since several years ago she survived a brutal attack, where they tried to kill her. Her life has completely changed. In addition, she is obsessed with finding the criminal, she is tired of suffering and of everyone thinking she is crazy because she cannot explain certain facts that seem to be a bad play of her mind. The discovery of a girl's corpse will unite her with journalist Dan Velazquez, who for reasons of his past, is now sunk in alcoholism. Both will find details in a large number of crimes committed over many years. She has no doubt that this is a serial killer and the same one who attacked her, but there are also too many things that don't make sense, so it will be difficult to believe him. How will she find the killer? Is he really the same criminal? Why has he never been caught? What was his first victim? What is the connection between all the victims? How do you beat someone who seems to know everything?
When everyone around you, even your own family, thinks you suffer from mental problems as a result of a traumatic event, what is your last resort? Find someone who is as screwed up as you are. It doesn't matter that this other person has a more pragmatic mindset, they are so deep in their own problems, they know what it's like to be a social outcast after being on top, therefore, they are the only person in the world you can make a connection with, to convince them of facts that have no logic.
Two losers, who at one point in their lives could have succeeded, but fate snatched them away, must support each other to discover the identity of a serial killer, who turns out to be another loser, in this case by birth, a guy who was destined to be a nobody, until luck made him stumble upon something he could never have imagined. That's why he releases all his frustrations, he becomes a cruel being, who, seeing himself rejected by everyone, can't stand to see bright people, those who are happy and have what he can never have. That is why he becomes an exterminating angel, taking away the brightness of the chosen ones.
Antes de continuar con mi opinión y la comparación que haré con la novela original, debes preguntarte cuál es la trama de la serie. Hice mi propia sinopsis sin revelar detalles importantes.

Kirby es una chica que trabaja en los archivos del Chicago Sun-Times que siempre se comporta de forma extraña, ya que hace varios años sobrevivió a un brutal ataque, donde intentaron matarla. Su vida ha cambiado por completo. Además, está obsesionada con encontrar al criminal, está cansada de sufrir y de que todos piensen que está loca porque no puede explicar ciertos hechos que parecen ser una mala jugada de su mente. El descubrimiento del cadáver de una chica la unirá al periodista Dan Velázquez, que por razones de su pasado, está ahora hundido en el alcoholismo. Ambos encontrarán detalles en un gran número de crímenes cometidos durante muchos años. A good adaptation
Book adaptations always raise some debate among readers. I always try to differentiate the works. I don't go to the extreme of readers who want to see everything just as it is in the novel. No, dear reader, the very word adaptation says it all, it is a reinvention of the story, with necessary changes. Of course, some adaptations work better than others. In this case, I can say that the series is as good as the original text.
There are many changes, but they enrich the story, bringing a new reading of the facts. Among the added changes, the most notable is the way the central mystery is revealed to us. We don't see the big reveal in all its splendor until the sixth episode, when the series already has the viewer hooked, eager to shape the mystery of the story. In the book we find out in the first two episodes. The change for me is totally valid, the book needs to capture our interest immediately and the series prefers to play first with our perception of the events.
Another big difference with the novel, is that the book involves us more with each victim of the serial killer, we know the life of each of the luminous girls who will have a fatal destiny. I would have liked to see that in the series, but I understand that it would force the story to drag on and the adaptation prefers to focus entirely on Kirby, how it has affected him and his attempt to stop the killer before he continues to kill innocent young people and disrupt his life each time he does. We will only know a little more about Jin-Sook, whose profession has been changed, but that is meant to explain that part I don't want to tell.
The book is also more explicit in describing each murder. All those chapters were the ones I loved when I read it. In the series, just as we don't delve into the lives of the victims, we also don't see very disturbing scenes of the girls' murders. But I'm not complaining about that plot decision; those responsible for the adaptation would have their reasons. In perspective, those scenes would not have altered anything, Harper's ruthless and sadistic mind is made very clear to us in the first sequence.
The denouement of the series, occurs differently from the book and at this point I can say that I liked the denouement of the series better because it brings another vision of everything exposed from the beginning. Everything closes in a circle, giving it a different nuance, more interesting for the multiple variables that can be given from the final plane. It also seems to me an ending more in line with our times, remember that the novel will be ten years after its publication and society has changed a lot. When you see the series you will understand what I mean.
Serial killers
The number of novels and audiovisual productions about serial killers is too large. In that aspect the story handles the classic elements of the genre, with suspense and mysteries to be solved. What makes this production different is the mixture with another genre that I will not name so as not to ruin the viewing. Not that it's totally original either, other stories have done similar combinations, but it helps a lot the well constructed characters played by some excellent actors. Jamie Bell is great as Harper. The coldness in his gaze and the ecstasy that gives him the power to end the life of anyone he chooses make him a fascinating killer.
The lead creator of the series, Silka Luisa, is a filmmaker I had never heard of, only this year, with the Halo series and now Shining Girls, have I seen her name in the credits of those productions. I love how she has adapted this novel, bringing complexity and the message of how the victims of attacks who manage to survive, must then go through hell to try to overcome all the mental disorders that will mark them for the rest of their lives. I already have Silka Luisa on my list of filmmakers to follow.
Elizabeth Moss
About the fabulous actress I have said it all in other reviews. There is nothing more to add, just to repeat that everything she is involved in, you have to see it. She is a phenomenal actress and she takes the lead role playing Kirby, this woman who seems to be going crazy, who is only looking for justice to be done and to get the peace she needs. Every day for her is a nightmare, from the moment of the attack she has been linked to the killer and her perception of reality seems to have altered. Although I imagined a very different Kirby physically, Elizabeth Moss takes ownership of the character. Now I can't imagine anyone else in that character. Just as Jamie Bell is perfect as the assassin, they fit well as a representation of the alpha and omega.
It's worth noting that her name appears in the opening credits of the series as an executive producer, as well as directing one of the episodes, not only is she the lead actress, but she was involved in other aspects of the adaptation. The episode she directs has an extraordinary cliffhanger. There's a big Hollywood star who serves as producer, but I won't tell you, I'll wait for you to read it when you watch the credits of the first episode. I'll give you a hint: he's very handsome and last year they were telling him: don't look up, in a movie.
Shining Girls is an eight-episode series that tells us a puzzle-style story, with jumps to various eras, to unravel the mystery surrounding the killer and, as the fragile survivor, she must face her fears to find the culprit of her misfortunes and stop him to save the lives of all the luminous girls. A story of a wolf hunting lambs, only we won't know until the end who the wolf in this adaptation really is.
I have gotten this far without telling the most important part of the story, it was hard not to make any spoilers. I suggest you don't watch the trailer. Look for the series and enjoy its episodes, if you already did, tell me what you thought, I want to know your opinion.
For those who want to read the book, I also recommend it, as well as the other novel by the author entitled Broken Monsters, where she tells us again another murder story, this time set in Detroit and I hope that some production company will adapt it soon in a miniseries.
Una buena adaptación
Las adaptaciones de libros siempre suscitan cierto debate entre los lectores. Yo siempre trato de diferenciar las obras. No me voy al extremo de los lectores que quieren ver todo plasmado tal cual en la novela. No, querido lector, la propia palabra adaptación lo dice todo, es un reinvención de la historia, con cambios necesarios. Por supuesto, algunas adaptaciones funcionan mejor que otras. En este caso, puedo decir que la serie es tan buena como el texto original.
Hay muchos cambios, pero enriquecen la historia, aportando una nueva lectura de los hechos. Entre los cambios añadidos, el más notable es la forma en que se nos revela el misterio central. No vemos la gran revelación en todo su esplendor hasta el sexto episodio, cuando la serie ya tiene al espectador enganchado, deseoso de dar forma al misterio de la historia. En el libro nos enteramos en los dos primeros capítulos. El cambio para mí es totalmente válido, el libro necesita captar nuestro interés inmediatamente y la serie prefiere jugar primero con nuestra percepción de los acontecimientos.
Otra gran diferencia con la novela, es que el libro nos involucra más con cada víctima del asesino en serie, conocemos la vida de cada uno de las chicas luminosas que tendrán un destino fatal. Me hubiera gustado ver eso en la serie, pero entiendo que obligaría a alargar la historia y la adaptación prefiere centrarse totalmente en Kirby, en cómo le ha afectado y en su intento de detener al asesino antes de que siga matando a jóvenes inocentes y alterando su vida cada vez que lo hace. Sólo sabremos un poco más sobre Jin-Sook, cuya profesión ha sido cambiada, pero eso tiene el propósito de explicar esa parte que no quiero contar.
El libro también es más explícito en la descripción de cada asesinato. Todos esos capítulos fueron los que me encantaron cuando lo leí. En la serie, al igual que no profundizamos en la vida de las víctimas, tampoco vemos escenas muy perturbadoras de los asesinatos de las chicas. Pero no me quejo de esa decisión argumental, los responsables de la adaptación tendrían sus razones. En perspectiva, esas escenas no habrían alterado nada, la mente despiadada y sádica de Harper nos queda muy claro en la primera secuencia.
El desenlace de la serie, ocurre de forma diferente al libro y en este punto puedo decir que me ha gustado más el desenlace de la serie porque aporta otra visión de todo lo expuesto desde el principio. Todo se cierra en un círculo, dándole un matiz diferente, más interesante por las múltiples variables que se pueden dar desde el plano final. También me parece un final más acorde con nuestros tiempos, recordemos que la novela va a cumplir diez años de su publicación y la sociedad ha cambiado mucho. Cuando veas la serie entenderás lo que quiero decir.
Asesinos en serie
El número de novelas y producciones audiovisuales sobre asesinos en serie es demasiado amplio. En ese aspecto la historia maneja los elementos clásicos del género, con suspenso y misterios por resolver. Lo que hace diferente a esta producción es la mezcla con otro género que no nombraré para no arruinar el visionado. Tampoco es que sea totalmente original, otras historias han hecho combinaciones similares, pero ayuda mucho los personajes bien construidos e interpretados por unos excelentes actores. Jamie Bell está genial como Harper. La frialdad de su mirada y el éxtasis que le da el poder de acabar con la vida de quien quiera lo convierten en un asesino fascinante.
La creadora principal de la serie, Silka Luisa, es una cineasta de la que nunca había oído hablar, sólo este año, con la serie Halo y ahora Shining Girls, he visto su nombre en los créditos de esas producciones. Me encanta cómo ha adaptado esta novela, aportando complejidad y el mensaje de cómo las víctimas de atentados que consiguen sobrevivir, deben luego pasar por un infierno para intentar superar todos los trastornos mentales que les marcarán para el resto de sus vidas. Ya tengo a Silka Luisa en mi lista de cineastas a seguir.
Elizabeth Moss
Sobre la fabulosa actriz lo he dicho todo en otras críticas. No hay nada más que añadir, sólo repetir que todo en lo que ella interviene, hay que verlo, Es una actriz fenomenal y se lleva el protagonismo interpretando a Kirby, esa muer que parece que se está volviendo loca, que sólo busca que se haga justicia y conseguir la paz que necesita. Cada día para ella es una pesadilla, desde el momento del atentado ha sido relacionada con el asesino y la percepción de la realidad parece tenerla alterada. Aunque me imaginaba a una Kirby muy diferente físicamente, Elizabeth Moss se adueña del personaje. Ahora no puedo imaginar a nadie más en ese personaje. Al igual que Jamie Bell es perfecto como el asesino, encajan bien como representación del alfa y el omega.
Debo destacar que su nombre aparece en los créditos iniciales de la serie como productora ejecutiva, además de dirigir uno de los episodios, no sólo es la actriz principal, sino que se involucró en otros aspectos de la adaptación. El episodio que dirige tiene un extraordinario cliffhanger. Hay una gran estrella de Hollywood que ejerce de productor, pero no te lo diré, esperaré a que lo leas cuando veas los créditos del primer episodio. Te doy una pista: es muy guapo y el año pasado le decían: no mires arriba, en una película.
Shining Girls es una serie de ocho episodios que nos cuenta una historia al estilo de un rompecabezas, con saltos a varias épocas, para desentrañar el misterio que rodea al asesino y, como la frágil superviviente, debe enfrentarse a sus miedos para encontrar al culpable de sus desgracias y detenerlo para salvar la vida de todas las chicas luminosas. Una historia de un lobo cazando corderos, sólo que no sabremos hasta el final quién es realmente el lobo de esta adaptación.
He llegado hasta aquí sin contar la parte más importante de la historia, era difícil no hacer ningún spoiler. Te sugiero que no veas el trailer. Busca la serie y disfrutad de sus episodios, si ya lo hiciste, cuéntame que te ha parecido, quiero saber tu opinión.
Para los que quieran leer el libro, también lo recomiendo, así como la otra novela de la autora titulada Monstruos rotos, donde nos vuelve a contar otra historia de asesinatos, esta vez ambientada en Detroit y que espero que alguna productora la adapte pronto en una miniserie.
