  1. Film Review: Silent Hill (2006)@drax691d

    (source: tmdb.org)

When it comes to film adaptations of popular video games, a director's passion for the source material can be a significant advantage. However, it is not a guarantee that the resulting movie will be an unmitigated success. One such example is Christophe Gans' 2006 adaptation of the horror video game Silent Hill.

The protagonist is Rose Da Silva (played by Radha Mitchell=, a woman whose adopted daughter Sharon (played by Jodelle Ferland) sleepwalks and appears to be plagued by nightmares involving a mysterious place called "Silent Hill". Unlike her husband Christopher (played by Sean Bean), who believes that conventional medicine can cure their daughter's afflictions, Rose becomes convinced that the key to solving this enigma lies in uncovering the truth about Silent Hill. When she discovers that the Silent Hill is real place, a coal mining town abandoned in the 1970s due to catastrophic underground fires, Rose decides to take Sharon there. Along the way, they are pursued by Cybill Bennett (played by Deborah Kara Unger), a policewoman who is convinced that Rose is a child kidnapper. Once in Silent Hill, they find themselves in a strange and frightening world shrouded in fog and covered in white ash, inhabited by zombie-like creatures and monstrous apparitions. They also encounter followers of an apocalyptic cult led by the sadistic Christabella (played by Alice Krige), who seeks to burn witches.

Gans was blessed with a budget of $50 million, which allowed him to create a visually stunning film that captures the dark, depressive, dangerous, yet fascinating atmosphere of Silent Hill as seen in the video games. The Canadian locations and elaborate sets help bring this chilling world to life, featuring some disturbing scenes of graphic violence that are sure to shock audiences.

The cast also delivers strong performances, with Radha Mitchell shining as a determined mother fighting to save her daughter. Jodelle Ferland excels in her dual role as Sharon and her demonic alter ego, while Alice Krige impresses as the power-hungry cult leader. Laurie Holden's character suffers one of the most gruesome demises in early 21st-century horror cinema.

However, the script by Roger Avary, a collaborator of Quentin Tarantino, is where things start to falter. While it takes inspiration from the first game in the series, the plot is largely original and lacks the cohesion that could have made this film truly great. The pacing is uneven, with many scenes feeling repetitive and allowing for plot holes to emerge. The ending, in particular, is disappointing and feels more at home in an episode of The Twilight Zone than a standalone feature film.

Some of these script flaws can be attributed to the producers' insistence on adding an artificial subplot involving Christopher's search for his missing family with the help of a jaded policeman (Kim Coates). This addition, made because producers thought that the script didn’t feature male characters, lengthens the film unnecessarily.

Despite initial box office success, Silent Hill was met with critical disdain and disappointment from fans of the game. Perhaps this is why a sequel, titled Silent Hill: Revelation, was released in 2011 under the direction of M.J. Basset, but failed to match the success of its predecessor.

While Gans' Silent Hill has its merits and moments of brilliance, it ultimately falls short due to its flawed script and pacing issues that prevent it from becoming a true horror classic.

    RATING: 5/10 (++)

  2. (ENG/SPA) Welcome to Silent Hill@promete0sz1218d

Welcome to Silent Hill, Source of Image Edited with Paint

Welcome to Silent Hill, the place of our nightmares. A very tempting premise because I love the horror genre with weight in the psyche of the characters, the film has handled it well because I was quite entertained but falls in different aspects, especially in that psychological element that I know is difficult to handle because it can bore if it is not dosed very well in a general audience.

There's an evil in the town that haunts it creating underworlds of darkness and punishment on everyone who is in it. This element is mastered very well, I liked what I saw, the transitions from anxiety to nightmare are very palpable and it feels like being in the game, this is a film based on a game of the same name, it has its differences as it should be, I am in favor of a director, screenwriters, artists involved in the project put their personal touch to the story that we want to tell, I do not want to see copies and that is a plus in the film from my perspective.

The idea that the film wants to convey manages three very well defined layers using colors, sound effects, soundtrack and atmosphere where all these elements are very enjoyable for the anxiety and stress they generate as the ash fog that does not let you see more than a few meters to the characters.

To my mind I would also say that it is a kind of paranormal film to explain the things that happen, the work of makeup and special effects for the monsters I loved, I got to play the game and if that atmosphere was perceived, if the monsters are not symmetrical so to speak, coming from nightmares are rather asymmetrical and this in some cases I like and in others not.

The film focuses more on horror, suspense and it's a pity I forgot the psychological factor because that is the biggest strength of the monsters, I like the way they look, it's definitely a yes BUT some of them have a background, I wanted to see that and there is a void in the film.

The above may vary greatly from person to person, it is already being very detailed and applies in the case of those who played the games but where it fails is in the villain and the girl, especially the latter because her performance does not convey much to me and being a fundamental piece of the plot, the film in my case falls and quite a lot.

I give it a score of 6.5 out of 10 because I had a good time, in fact I can watch the movie many times, I don't get bored because there are scenes that I enjoy enormously and I never get tired of watching but I always come to the same conclusion, its potential falls because of the Alessa factor and although I love Rose, I always have that feeling that something is missing.

Rose The Mother, Source of Image

The spoiler zone begins in order to explain what most caught my attention and what took me out of the film. Let's start with the positives, since this is a beaten film and in these cases I prefer to highlight what I liked.

The choice of Rose as the main character instead of the father factor seemed to me to be a total success in the film, I know that many people because of the influence of the games would have preferred the male version but in my case I played it and I remember that the main character had a TOO passive attitude, an element that corresponds more to a woman that by adding the touch of Unconditional Protection which is a trait that is perceived more in the Mother, I think it fits correctly.

Actress Radha Mitchel gives a very strong performance, from being bathed in blood to other different scenes where her character conveys strength to me, the opposite of her original influence from the games where the man was too much of an asshole for my taste. I see a strong protagonist who will do whatever it takes to rescue her daughter and I believe in that conviction of the character.

A counterpart of the above is what would be if Sean Bean who plays as Sharon's father would be the main character, I will not deny that after seeing him in Game of Thornes, I wonder what would be this film with him as the main character because the actor transmits a lot of power, his emotions, decisions etc, I leave this detail to know what you think about this because it will remain forever the curiosity to see Sharon's father as the main character.

Cybil Bennett is an Angel of Protection, Gif of Peakd

Laurie Holden in my opinion fulfills the role of Cybil Bennett, as such does not have a background, she falls in Silent Hill to follow Rose to protect the girl because she sees some suspicious attitudes on the part of the mother.

Her way of dying seems to me a bestiality, I can bear to see that kind of scenes but it gives me much regret the suffering with which she dies burned at the stake as if she were a demon or witch, a character who is an Angel of protection to perish like that, I liked this because it generated in me that feeling of pity for her.

Let's go with the negative points that are the villain and her cult that I do not see them purpose in the film apart from dying spectacularly, his death I liked, I highlight that, chopped in half but argumentatively Silent Hill at the general level suffers in this aspect because it is not very consistent story.

This also affects Alessa but to a lesser extent because her suffering in the hospital with Lisa, the nurse who takes care of her, pleases me, what I did not like at all is the performance of Jodelle Ferland, her innocent part I do not see so much detail but as Alessa she needs to convey evil, revenge, hatred because I do not see these attributes in the character and it affects me a lot when watching the film.

Pyramid Head and The Sexy Nurses, Source of Image

Now let's go with something quite positive which are the monsters, the visual representation of these through makeup and practical effects seems to me a total success, the different monsters with their individual forms seemed to me disgusting, which is attractive in the film because that's the way it should be.

The butchery applied by Pyramid Head as he flays alive one of the cult followers is an exquisite scene to watch over and over again, the way he grabs her by the chest and lifts her up with his brute strength to then tear her skin off in the flesh, that is a delight. The evil of the monsters is present and having very strange shapes, they become very striking.

What would greatly enrich the film is to have given some backstory to some of these monsters, mainly to Pyramid Head and the Nurses, guys these characters alone have a lot to give and give them a basis or past plot of why they exist and are so I think it would help a lot to the Silent Hill concept that means Punishment to the Conscience of the people.

Visually the nurses amazed me, the choreography with which they move and moan is to see again and again, I remember when I saw it that I placed that scene several times, I was like a child in a cycle of fun that I could not leave, they are sensual, their breasts look beautiful even though their faces are horrible, they do manage to generate an attraction to them, I emphasize this because they influenced me visually and for their erratic movements.

With them I say goodbye to this review that I hope you have enjoyed, based on all the above, I give 6.5 out of 10 to the movie because I found it entertaining and these nurses are a plus that makes me raise more points despite the plot not so coherent that I perceived, this could have been much better if the argument was worked with more details in the psyches of monsters.

Dedicated each and every one of my posts and videos to my little dog named princess that we called her chiquito who is no longer with us but from heaven she will see that her existence was valuable and the most beautiful thing that will exist in my heart and soul.
