  1. Sing Sing (2023): Rehabilitation Through the Arts | rehabilitación a través de las artes@cristiancaicedo515d

Nominated for 3 Academy Awards | Nominada a 3 premios de la Academia

Art is necessary. There are millions of people who see artistic expressions (dance, theater, literature, poetry, painting) as hobbies, as an additional element to normal life or as an eccentricity. For a long time, people have labeled artists and fans of some type of art as somewhat odd individuals (crazy, bohemian, sensitive) who deviate from the things that - according to them - truly matter, such as the news, the market and what they call "reality". But art is not an extra or the extravagance of strange people: art is a necessity for every human soul.

A poem cannot stop a bullet, but it can move the shooter to the point of preventing him from doing so. A painting cannot solve the economic crisis of a country, but it can serve as inspiration, reflection and consolation for those who contemplate it in their despair. Although many refuse to see it, the arts are necessary for the life and development of human beings and their life in society. That is one of the premises on which Sing Sing is based, a film directed by Greg Kwedar that is nominated for three Oscars: Best Lead Actor, Best Original Song and Best Adapted Screenplay. The film tells the story of a small group of prisoners at the Sing Sing Correctional Center, that world-famous maximum security prison in New York State, who find in theater a way to reconnect with their humanity. The protagonist is John "Divine G" Whitfield, played by an extraordinary Colman Domingo, one of the founders of Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA), a program directed by Brent (Paul Raci) in which prisoners have the opportunity to participate as actors and stage plays each semester and then perform them for the public. Thanks to his intelligence, emotional depth, acting quality and the time he has as part of the program, Divine G is respected and admired by all the other RTA participants and they greatly trust his ideas and leadership.

    The actors | Los actores

After having staged some famous pieces, including several Shakespeare plays, the group is looking for ideas to put on a new production and to do so they also need to include more interns, which is why they begin to review the candidates and thus Clarence is added to the program "Divine Eye" Maclin, a man with a violent and difficult personality who, despite wanting to be part of the theater group, has many prejudices about the process of putting together a play and about the exercises suggested by Brent. Also, he doesn't seem to like Divine G very much at first.

Throughout the entire film we will see how the different stories develop. On the one hand we have the theatrical production of an original work, written by Brent himself, the exercises, rehearsals, costume tests, until the final performance, just like any theater company. But we will also learn more about the life of Divine G, Divine Eye and other inmates like Mike Mike, Dap, Preme and JJ, why are they imprisoned? what was their crime? what is their sentence? Since Sing Sing is a maximum security prison, we presume that these men must have committed serious offenses, but is there hope that they will ever get out of there? All these questions and the anecdotes that the characters tell make us reflect on many topics, but the most evident is the greatest value of human beings after life: their freedom. Being deprived of that, being locked up for years without being able to go anywhere else, has to be one of the most traumatic and limiting experiences that a human being can experience. It's not about feeling sympathy for a group of criminals (remember that these men are drug dealers, murderers, abusers), but about recognizing how incarceration can kill what remains of humanity within these individuals. And the RTA program seeks precisely to rescue that, that humanity, that sensitivity, to rehabilitate these inmates and prevent them - between their violent past and their confined present - from ceasing to feel like human beings.

Scene from the movie | Escena de la película

There are some differences, but Sing Sing is based on a true story. The RTA exists and they not only carry out theater workshops but also have programs related to music, dance, visual arts, poetry, all with the intention of offering inmates the possibility of rehabilitating themselves through these artistic expressions. And an additional fact: Colman Domingo and Paul Raci are the only professional actors in the film. The others are ex-convicts who were part of the program in real life and play themselves.

So, Greg Kwedar not only decided to bring this inspiring true story to the big screen, writing the script with Clint Bentley and John H. Richardson, but also decided to include in the film several people directly involved in the story, from Brent Buell's original work to the performances of Clarence Maclin (Divine Eye) and John Whitfield (Divine G) who has a small cameo in one scene and the participation of other interns. Thanks to that and Domingo's great performance, Sing Sing is believable, relatable, inspiring and tremendously moving. From the streets to the prison, from the prison to the theater, from the theater to life and from life to the screen, this is a story worth seeing and spreading. But beyond the subject or the story, the film is also very well done in the technical aspects, the photography, the script, the direction. That's why it strikes me that despite its three Oscar nominations, it has not been nominated in the Best Picture category, where Nickel Boys, another prison drama, directed by RaMell Ross and written from a novel by Colson Whitehead, is nominated, which only has another nomination (Best Adapted Screenplay), so, according to the Academy, what does it take to be nominated for Best Picture? what makes a film a better film? its story, its screenplay, the technical aspects? It's not clear to me. What I am very clear about is that Sing Sing is a great movie with a great message and that everyone should see it, how many of you have already seen it? I'll read you in the comments.

  2. 🎬 2025 Movie #5 | Sing Sing (2023)@screenjournal530d

    Image

This blog is a personal journal of all the movies I watch during a year which enhances my overall viewing experience. The ratings that I give are fully based on my personal preference and enjoyment at the time of watching and I'm writing spoiler-free reviews.

I went into this movie only really knowing that it was a prison movie about inmates who did something around theater and acting which was exactly what it was. I had good hopes as I generally enjoy Prison Movies with the Shawshank Redemption as one of my all-time favorites. It gets a 7.7 on Imdb while I saw it in some list this or last year. At the same time I don't really have anything with theater and generally dislike movies that have too much of that in them. I remember watching Theater Camp last year which ended up as one of my least liked movies as it was basically 80% of the time some kids doing weird acting.

    Sing Sing (6.0/10)

    Spoiler-Free Movie Plot:

"Divine G, imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn't commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men in this story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art. The movie is supposed to be based on real-life events and many of the actors used to be real inmates."

So I guess the main theme of this movie is that art in whatever form matters and can help people in many different ways. I did really like the main actor in the film but overall purely on personal preference, this simply wasn't for me. I in a way felt it was similar to Theater Camp where most of the movie this time were some inmates trying to do some silly acting. I missed the feeling of a real prison life as it could have been just taken place inside of an acting school without that the movie being that much different. I also didn't really get the main message the movie was trying to communicate.

Trailer: I actually didn't watch the trailer before watching the movie but I can say it perfectly embodies the actual movie and doesn't really spoil anything.

So I can't say I overly enjoyed Sing Sing, this is purely subjective while I get that some people really are into something like this which the ImDb score also indicates. I'm personally giving it a 6.0/10

    # 2025 Watched Movies Score
    #01 Heretic 7.8/10
    #02 A Different Man 6.9/10
    #03 Look Back 6.9/10
    #04 Caddo Lake 7.5/10
    #05 Sing Sing 6.0/10

  3. Sing Sing And Kraven@steemychicken1540d

    SING SING

Serving his sentence in the maximum-security Sing Sing Correctional Facility for a crime he didn’t commit, Divine J. finds meaning in life by joining the prison’s theater group alongside fellow inmates. Worth watching?

    🟢🟢🟢🟢
    • Colman Domingo is FANTASTIC. I’m almost certain he’ll get an Oscar nod.

    • Honestly, I didn’t expect much going in, but it feels like a dramatized documentary. I was pleasantly surprised.

    • The approach is quite realistic overall.

    • Something I didn’t know (and found impressive) is that most of the lead cast are actual inmates from the correctional facility.

    • It has a more "poetic" tone, aiming to break the stigma surrounding this social group.

    • Strikes a good balance between the drama of the inmates’ lives and their humorous way of coping.

    🔴🔴🔴🔴

    • It sticks to a somewhat predictable framework.

    • A bit more melodramatic than I’d like—probably because it’s chasing awards—and takes itself too seriously at times.

    • Some parts are boring 🤷‍♂️. Feels like one of those films you either love or forget.

    • It drags in places.

    • Has an old-school vibe in its direction.

    KRAVEN

Kraven’s complex relationship with his ruthless father drives him down a path of revenge with violent consequences, pushing him to become the world’s greatest hunter. What can I even say? It feels like Sony is doing this on purpose … Aside from the Spider-Man films, it’s like they’re actively trying to ruin anything related to the Spider-Verse. The result here? Below average.

    🟢🟢🟢🟢

    • Aaron Taylor-Johnson is probably the best part of the movie. He has the presence of a leading man, but there’s no script to support him.

    • The R rating allows for raw violence… and while it’s there, it doesn’t bring anything extra to the table.

    • A couple of well-shot stunt scenes, but that’s about it.

    • The character of Foreigner seemed interesting, but he wasn’t developed enough. 🔴🔴🔴🔴

    • The biggest issue is the script. It’s a chaotic mess—poorly written, incoherent, and riddled with clichés.

    • Ariana DeBose is wasted in a purely decorative role.

    • Russell Crowe? Completely forgettable.

    • The CGI is bad—both for the animals and Rhino.

    • Directing is subpar.

    • The main villains are bland and unmemorable.

    • Sony keeps making the same mistake: turning characters who are antiheroes in the comics into heroes, and doing it poorly. Plus, they don’t connect them to their main adversary, Spider-Man. If they did, I think the audience would care more.

    • Zero chemistry between the cast members.
