(Skyscraper, 2018)@panza2846d

    Skyscraper1.jpg IMG

  2. Skyscraper (film): Proof that the Rock can make money in just whatever@gooddream2869d

The fact that movies like this make loads of money actually makes me a bit upset. This movie is just awful aside from the huge budget and well, go ahead and watch. It will make several hundred million dollars which will only insure the fact that they will continue to make this sort of garbage.

    200x200.png

I don't think i really need to get into the storyline to let anyone know what is happening here. There is a skyscraper, there is fire, and the Rock is involved. I am sure you can put the rest of the pieces into place. Insert a few bad guys with Eastern European accents and 100 million dollars worth of CGI and well, you have the whole story!

rock-skyscraper-fb.jpg this isn't even a scene from the film, but it may as well be

I don't even want to include other screen captures of this film because honestly it isn't necessary. Dwayne Johnson is going to win in whatever movie he is in and this is not an exception. He has some kids with "Sarah," played by Neve Campbell (welcome back Neve!) and they live in a skyscraper when something bad happens and they have to sort it out.

Honestly, fill in any plot whatevers you want in the middle. It was pre-determined by the fact that the Rock was in the movie and it was called "Skyscraper" what was going to happen in this movie from the moment that any of the however many people it takes to make $300 million. I guess he just has that sort of star power. I would imagine that he gets paid $20 million a movie at this point and for that I say, well done Rock! I'm not going to come down on you for being popular and a tremendous selling point.

However, in the meantime I think I should be entitled to say that this movie is garbage and so are a vast majority of the other movies that Dwayne Johnson is involved in. I watch them only to find fault in them but I guess I am in the minority. Hollywood has found a system that makes them a ton of money and having films with any sort of substance doesn't even factor into their script equation.

This movie proves that Hollywood can take the Rock and put him into any f**king scenario and the film is going to make tons of money, thus insuring that we will only ever get this from him. I mean if I was a business owner and I knew of method of making tons of money where the product was crap, or to make tiny bits of money that took a real thought process, i would go with the former also.

I expect we will see lots of extremely predictable movies with no real substance in the next, I dunno, 10 years or so. Then it will all go away, Dwayne will be a bazillionaire and be replaced by someone else at some point where the entire process will be repeated.

If you are the type of person that wants to watch a movie with the story substance of Transformers and the acting and special effects budget of also Transformers - but without the Transformers, then this movie will be for you.

    4 / 10

it gets the 4 only because well, it keeps moving quickly at least

  3. "Skyscraper" with Dwayne Johnson - movie review@godflesh2902d

Will Sawyer (Dwayne Johnson) is a former FBI agent who, after an incident during a rescue operation, remains disabled and lives with a prosthesis on one leg. Ten years after the event, he is already the owner of a skyscraper security testing company, has a loving wife and two children. Through the intermediary of a friend, he is hired by Asian billionaire Joao Long to test the security system of his new building. The Pearl is a miracle of engineering science with 225 floors with living quarters, offices, a park, and the most secure security system. What Will Sawyer does not know is that he is part of a conspiracy. Joao's enemies engage hired terrorist Corres Botta and his gang and they flood the 96th floor of the building. Their goal is to reach Joao, who closes in his penthouse at the top of the skyscraper. The unplanned event in this plan is Mrs. Sierre and the two children who find themselves in their apartment above the level of the fire and their only way is up. In the rest of the movie, Will has to find a way to enter the burning building and save his family.

    5a843b4e51c5f.jpg

Despite the many weaknesses, the "skyscraper" is not totally devoid of merit. One of its few strengths is its visual effects. In fact, they are the only thing that does not seem to be "caught up" to the narrative, and at times it is a pleasure to see how with the help of technology the imposing tall building, the flames, the shooting and the most impressive - the very pearl on top, optical illusions create the best hiding place. The other good thing at these hour and forty minutes, mostly performed with shot crackling, is Nev Campbell's acting play, played by Will's wife, Sarah Sawyer. Although her performance is far from what she's done in the 21st Years in the Scree, Campbell is one of the few actors in the film to do more than to speak and rely on the atmosphere to build the image. Immediately after her are the two children, but we see too little to forget about the rest of the composition. Dwayne Johnson does neither more nor less than what he has shown so far, and it is not particularly remarkable.

No matter how good the visual effects and Nev Campbell's game is, it can not hide the biggest weakness of the Nebostargaich. This is the scenario - in every aspect. History, dialogue, action development, link between parts, consistency and logic - there are no foundations of any good film. Even "cinema-like" justification can not be used. It could hardly be different when the story recalls some of the best movies in the genre at the first stage (baseline situation). The size in this case really does not matter because the Pearl rose to 10,000 meters, the similarities with "Die Hard" and "Hell under the Heaven" would still be the eyes of the viewer. A man is a hostage in a building and must save his family on the top of it. The building is in flames. In "Die Hard", however, we have Bruce Willis directed by John McCartney, and "Hell in the Sky" has an Academy Award nomination for Best Film ... and Paul Nieman, Steve McQueen, Fay Dunnaway, William Holden and Fred Aster. By the time the story overlaps with the above-mentioned titles, things are in balance, but from one moment on, the film begins to follow its course ... and then both Rousson's Marshal Turburne and his directing dies.

    1527097504381_4978_cops_5.jpg

The original "knot" was obviously too difficult to "unravel" because the concealment is not simply impossible (it could be swallowed), it is illogical to the last second. On the other hand, any illogical effect may be on average 3 kicks, 10 bullets, 1 explosion and 1 detachment of Will's artificial prosthesis. All this robbed the last opportunity to immerse in the story. But at least we can see the miraculous power of the Chinese tape which is strong enough to keep the body of the Rock on the walls of the skyscraper ... and a revolutionary sprinkler system that works hours after the fire broke. Here are the limits that should not be overtaken even by such a film. The quality of each film is measured against the bar to which it is intended. In the case of the Skyscraper, however, it can not even reach that of the summer action that the viewer quickly forgets. Until now, the film has a revenue of nearly $ 70 million against a $ 125 million budget. The only reason to be seen is short-lived entertainment, but for this purpose there are far more valuable films in the same style that would give much more to the viewer.

  4. Skyscraper - Movie Review@coldsteem2905d

Some of us are old enough to remember an old movie called The Towering Inferno. Released in 1974, the film was set atop a massive tower that was poorly constructed. When the building catches fire, the occupants become trapped above the fire line. It was possibly last in a sequence of disaster films that were popular in that era. The concept was renewed in 1988 with Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Skyscraper appears to revisit the genre with a new twist. Not necessarily better, just bigger.

Will Sawyer (Duane Johnson) is a former FBI HRT Team member. When a suicide vest takes his right leg, his career is ended. Ten years later, Will is married to the combat medic who treated him following the explosion. He and Sarah (Neve Campbell) have two twins, Georgia (McKenna Roberts) and Henry (Noah Cottrell). Will's small security firm has been hired to conduct a full security assessment of the world's tallest skyscraper, called the Pearl. His former partner Ben (Pablo Schreiber) helped him land the deal which will put Will's company on the map. Will's assignment requires him to pair with a state-of-the-art security software that will allow him full access to the systems to conduct his review.

Will doesn't realize that the job is a set up. His tablet is taken by shady underworld figures so they can hack the building security systems and set it ablaze. The organized crime bosses from three syndicates are working together to retrieve a software drive that contains information on syndicate members. Will's family becomes trapped in the building, which is set ablaze to flush out the building's owner, Zhao Long Ji (Chin Han). Will must find a way to get above the fire line (nearly 100 floors above ground level), and save his family. Will's heroics belie the fact that he has a synthetic leg as he engages in death-defying (and reality defying) antics to rescue his wife and children.

Skyscraper would have us believe that gravity doesn't exist. It was suggest that duct tape can keep you clinging to a building a thousand feet off the ground. It would suggest that a raging fire through a hundred floors of a building would not cause it to crash to the ground. It would make us believe that a thousand vertical feet of fire could be extinguished nearly instantly without depriving the building of all oxygen (otherwise our lead characters would be dead). This is not a story that even remotely attempts to be credible. It is completely ridiculous. So, can a film completely throw reality out the window and be engaging? Of course. It happens all the time. Skyscraper manages this feat by giving us plenty of action and great CGI along with an interesting concept for a backdrop. The characters are a bit flat, there are clear lines of good vs. evil, and the struggles are external. The film goes to great lengths to contrive action, but this is an action film that will take your breath away with the incredible visual qualities. If you are expecting something mentally stimulating, forget it. This story is tripe. But if you like good suspense, action and visuals, this film delivers.

Duane Johnson can carry a film that has little value. He creates likable characters who are generally just a little bit self-depreciating. I like Johnson and tend to view his films through the same lens. He has done some good ones, but he is in a lot of mediocre films. His recent release Rampage is a good example, although I gave that film a non-recommendation. On the other hand, I really liked Jumanji. Johnson is the star of this film. The casting around him was solid. The characters were flat but believable. I particularly like Campbell as his wife, even though we don't see much of her.

Skyscraper received a PG-13 rating from the MPAA. The film has a smidgen of strong language but mostly tense action sequences and violence. There are several shooting sequences and a suicide bomber in this film. The rating seems to stem mostly from the violence, although the tension from the visual qualities of this film stem from a ridiculous budget that hit 125 million dollars. That's insane to me. With that kind of budget on the line, they should seriously have considered improving the script. Grant it, this film was largely saved by the visual qualities and action. But that kind of budget for a mediocre film blows me away. Any age should be fine for this film. The gore factor is low, the action factor is high.

Skyscraper has an imperfect script. The dialogue is cheesy at times, the concept is derivative, the characters are hackneyed, the action beyond credible. Throw science out the window. Remove yourself from the real world, and you may enjoy this film. The budget allowed for some incredible action sequences with visual qualities that will have you gripping the edge of your seat. The actors are likeable, adding a bit of extra value to an otherwise mediocre film. If you are looking for mindless fun with lots of action, this is it. This film could have been so much better. As is, I give Skyscraper a mild recommendation. 6/10.
