Behind the productions that attract great interest from both literature and moviegoers, there is the fact that literary works are transferred to cinema. We don't know how many moviegoers are aware of this in most of the productions adapted from novels. I can say that the productions created especially by being faithful to the book give at least as much flavor as the book, but I should remind you that what I say is in line with my possibilities because I do not always have the comfort of watching both the book and the movie in productions adapted from books.
Watching an amnesiac detective's battle with his own mind and reality while trying to solve a murder from the past has a nice promising effect. The one-sentence plot description definitely makes me feel the tension and triggers my sense of curiosity.
Without further ado, let me share the movie with you; Sleeping Dogs
Russell Crowe gives an outstanding performance as Roy Freeman, a former detective who is torn between his memories and his lost recollections. In the light of new developments, the character is forced to re-examine an unsolved murder case and his methods of coping with his personal health problems; sometimes stagnating and sometimes increasing pace of the movie.
Even though I questioned myself about why I watched the movie during the stagnant scenes, in the end I was glad I did. The character's forgotten memories and fragmented memory force him to confront his own past and solve the mystery of the case. The way the forgotten memories are revealed as clues, like pieces of a puzzle, and the way each piece is carefully put together to reach the big picture, the conclusion, makes for a perfect flow in the story.
At the same time, while you feel the tension in your bones, you feel that your sense of curiosity is triggered as much as possible. I can say that this is both story-driven and character-driven...
...but I would like to add that Russell Crowe has created a character who is a master at creating suspense on his own. The character's psychological turmoil and the ebb and flow of his memories are perfectly and effectively portrayed.
Another element I found remarkable was the gloomy atmosphere of the movie. The atmosphere, which allows the character to reflect his mental turmoil effectively, also contributes to the depth of the story.
I recommend you to watch Sleeping Dogs, which depicts the detective's mental journey, his encounters with suspects and his step-by-step approach to the truth with an impressive fiction. I can guarantee that viewers who love psychological thrillers and detective stories will get extra pleasure. With the addition of Russell Crowe's successful and powerful acting, it is a production that draws the audience in. It is quite possible to experience almost all the emotions in the story at the same time with the characters. This was one of them.
Thank you for being here and reading. Take care and goodbye!
It is a thriller that explores the dark recesses of memory and the impact of Alzheimer's on the life of a former homicide detective.
The plot follows a former detective who, while undergoing experimental treatment for Alzheimer's, reopens an old case involving the brutal murder of a university professor, a case closed ten years earlier.
The detective, who was kicked out of the police force some time ago, visits a black death row inmate, Isaac (Pacharo Mzembe), whom he helped incarcerate ten years ago, after getting him to confess to a murder. Isaac is days away from execution.
The boy now claims he is innocent. But he admits he was in the house the night Joseph Wieder (superb Márton Csókás), a professor at Waterford College, was beaten to death.
The boy claims that Roy knows he is innocent and begs him to review the case. This leads our protagonist into a deep-dive, labyrinthine task that will gradually remind him of things.
As the investigation progresses, new clues and secrets are uncovered that complicate the narrative, keeping the viewer on edge.
Adam Cooper, making his feature film directorial debut, makes it clear from the very first images of the film that the viewer must understand the protagonist's illness.
Russell Crowe's performance is undoubtedly the highlight of the film. Playing a former detective struggling with memory loss, Crowe delivers a compelling and emotional performance, capturing the desperation and determination of his character.
His ability to convey the emotional complexities of a man facing both his inner demons and external danger is remarkable.
Likewise Tommy Flanagan acquits himself well in his role and Karen Gillian acquits herself well in a script that doesn't treat her well.
The film has tension, a surprising story based on a good novel, a genuine, very believable performance from all its protagonists, who are all very good, and above all it is highly entertaining.
The psychological and intriguing atmosphere is another very successful aspect, reminiscent of an old film, very credible.
A serious, suspenseful crime film, well worth seeing.
Many times it is worse to know the truth; that is a bit of the premise of this new film where Russell Crowe shows off his acting chops. The last time I saw Crowe act was in a war film where he was the spark plug to make it work, it was logical that he had to see this new production being the protagonist. The thing is that we are facing a story which is a criminal thriller and even psychological which I assure you will leave you nailed in front of the screen waiting to see what will be the next discovery or page of this plot and is that yes, this is very similar to a detective novel that as we move forward the more everything is tangled and therefore the more interesting the matter gets.
This is the story of Roy Freeman (Russell Crowe), a former police force detective who is retired. The thing about Roy is that he is suffering from Alzheimer's, he is one of those people who has notes taped up all over his house to help him remember things, even the most basic things like his own name. Living alone and apart from everything, he tries to survive as best he can. But that reality is about to change just as his phone rings with a call that will certainly change his life. It turns out that more than 10 years ago he was present in a case whose culprit is on death row waiting for his time and who just now claims he is innocent.
All this makes Roy is "forced" to uncover the case again even though it is one that is closed. The interesting thing about this, if that word fits, is that as I said Roy does not remember anything so he will have to reassemble the case almost from scratch to start the investigation again. Obviously this is something that will help him to improve his brain functions, hence his decision to go ahead. This is where it all basically starts, Freeman begins to get into some murky waters as he discovers new clues and secrets that will lead him to a world where betrayal is the main course. Soon he will also learn that it is often better not to know everything and leave things alone.
As I already mentioned, this is a film full of intrigue where in the end nothing is known for sure, so Roy can only rely on his instinct, which is still intact. It is a film that is very well put together because we are presented as chapters being the characters each one of them. This is very cool because it gives us the necessary context to know the truth of each one, to know how involved they are and that one as a viewer play and draw their own conclusions. Also because this injects a pace not so much frenetic but with enough suspense and even mystery so that the almost two hours of film does not become so long and is very enjoyable.
It's obviously not an action film, in fact there is none of that and it doesn't need it either as it focuses purely on the investigation and how Roy deals with his mental condition on a day to day basis. At times it can seem overwhelming to see how someone with Alzheimer's tries to put all the pieces together without "dying" in the attempt, that drama is interesting to watch because it gives the film one more difficulty and so it's not all so flat. I liked it because it wasn't until the last moment of the film when the whole truth is known, along the way we're being suggested with clues and facts to make us think one way until a plot twist occurs and throws off any theory we may have had.
As for the cast, it must be said that it is very good. In addition to Russell we have Karen Gillan, Marton Csokas and Tommy Flanagan. Crowe's role is top, he is one of my favorite actors for a reason, he adapts to any interpretation. Gillan is also very good, to think that she started doing the typical sitcom comedy and ended up becoming a great actress. Actually all the performances were up to par, I don't have much criticism about it. In fact, I would think that because of the style of the film I think the performances are the ones that carry the weight of the plot, hence its importance and how well they did it.
I'm going to give it an 8/10 because I really enjoyed it. The key for me was or was the ending, at one point I said to myself: "it depends on how it ends I will like it or not" and the ending, personally, I did not expect it, I thought about it but I did not see it coming. It is a thriller that I recommend to everyone. It lasts less than two hours. I leave the trailer below.
