Hello, people of the internet, today I want to talk to you about the movie "Smile", which although a bit predictable, has fantastic cinematography and some good scares, very James Wan style. Read on to find out what it's all about.

The story is repetitive, the typical curse that has a marked pattern and the protagonist must investigate to try to save himself from the curse, sometimes with satisfactory results and sometimes not, "The Ring" style, however, it is how the director and the actors tell the story that makes it special, that in addition to taking advantage of coulrophobia (clown phobia) and one of the most common phobias, make up the charm of the film and its distinctive touch.

What made me fall in love with the film was the cinematography. It has subjective shots (I love these shots for horror) it also has a lot of upside down shots, which makes for a sense of discomfort without us noticing it. The colour palette is very odd for this genre, mostly pop colours (pastels and some vivid ones) reminding us more or less of the 60's era, but given the appeal of the film (the macabre smiles) I feel that in this case the polar opposites are perfect.

As a fun fact, I have to say that this scene scared the hell out of me because I'm terrified of Rokurokubi (a Japanese Yokai) that have very long necks, so I almost had a heart attack when I saw that.

But, if we talk about the soundtrack, I don't think I've heard such a good one since "Babadoock", and the style reminds me of Jed Kurzel (composer of the Babadook soundtrack) or Akira Yamaoka (composer of the soundtrack of the first Silent Hill games) random sounds are what make up each piece, almost in its entirety and each of them generates a very good atmosphere that accompanies the different scenes very well. Among the ramdons sounds I distinguished cat meows, and I love that many of these sounds are heard as with that effect of being underwater, they sound drowned, precisely to generate this feeling. Some sounds go in crescendo, and they are clear pieces that accompany a scene where the terror increases gradually. A work of art.

In general parameters I think it is a very good film, it fulfils its first and biggest purpose, to scare, besides the well used and well distributed resources have activated my faith in the horror genre nowadays (something that only director James Wan provokes in me) and also we have to take into account that this is the first film of director Parker Finn, and he did it very well.

It was trending and everywhere I went was seeing reviews of it. Well, I haven’t read any of them for the fear of getting spoilers so I jumped in to find out myself. In one sentence I would say, "Good one! I have enjoyed watching this with a little bit of exception." Have you seen this film? If yes then can you tell me how you felt about the whole time and did it change in the end? Actually, mine did, just a few violent scenes, in the end, was a little bit of an exaggeration to consume, for me at least. I don't know if I am overreacting over those disturbing scenes. But the whole movie was so enjoyable, the whole time I was thinking of it as a good one, and I was too thrilled thinking about what was going to happen next.

'Smile' is a psychological horror film which is written and directed by Parker Finn and I must admit that he did outstanding. Don't get scared of seeing someone smiling weirdly after watching this film, actually I am thinking about that, lol.

So in the beginning, we get Sosie Bacon as Dr. Rose Cotter who is a psychiatrist, and one of her patients suicides in front of her while an ongoing session. That person's mental state wasn’t stable, she was referring to something like a human but not exactly, it only smiles at her which is not pleasant but the worst she had ever experienced. Coincidentally, she witnessed another suicide of a professor and now she dies. Since her death, Rose Cotter seems to experience such weird things, as if something is chasing her, something that cursed her after the incident she had witnessed. And it continues toward the extreme. She is a psychiatrist, so was she getting crazy, or actually she was speaking or experiencing something paranormal?

To be honest, the story was good enough to enjoy the whole ride. Especially the ending, I was changing thoughts and judgment on the sudden changes, haha. COULD BE A SPOILER AHEAD, you know what, I really loved the different situations and scenarios they tried to portray as of how the story could have turned, showed us a reflection of our thoughts and made it go as they wanted. Btw the most tragic scene was the ending, she tried to avoid it, and even the escape from this chain of madness was so selfish, she didn't choose it, we saw how it could have gone, but she ended up sacrificing the person who did care for her the most. That was the most tragic part of this film, he didn't deserve it.

Btw, the story didn't end, we didn't even get any satisfactory ending, just saw one piece of the ongoing chain so we can expect a sequel for sure, hehe yes we can. So yeah, it was a good one, but whenever I am to suggest this to someone I would definitely warn them about a few of the disturbing scenes in the end, because those may be not pleasant to many. Yeah, we have seen worse than this too but a little bit of warning doesn't cost anything. Go for it if you are planning to go, good one.

  3. Smile | First movie that scared the shit out of me in a while@jauregui981327d

I knew absolutely nothing about this film, the only thing I knew was that there were people who smiled and that for some reason was scary, that was the only thing I knew, so I saw it without any expectations, I did not know what I was going to see, what the plot was, much less the plot, everything was behind a veil of absolute ignorance that made the time the film lasted very pleasant because even understanding what it was all about and creating several ideas about the possible ending, it manages to satisfy, it manages to surprise, and in my particular case, it managed to scare me, for a short time, as nothing had done in a long time, I felt tiny, small, helpless, I did not enjoy it, but the adrenaline I felt afterward I did enjoy it, I am here smiling remembering the movie.

Smile is about many things, but the main thing is that Dr. Rose, a therapist, one day a possible patient comes to her who reveals that she is seeing someone or something that takes the appearance of the people she knows and torments her, because she always has a terrifying smile, after an alarming conversation, the patient ends up committing suicide while smiling; later Rose will begin to experience the same type of hallucinations, which little by little will take her to the limit of everything she can bear, while she is searching for answers to what is happening to her in the hope of finding a solution to her situation.

    image.png

I don't know if it was for drugging me to get rid of my cat allergy, but I saw this movie in a state of calm and peace that I haven't had for days, from the opening scene I was already loving the movie (damn the rooster of my neighbors who seems to have tuberculosis and scares me every time he tries to sing, I hate him, he scares me and scares me more than the movie, I calm down), and the movie has a very calm pace, and that's one of its strong points, there are an infinite amount of horror movies that have a very fast pace, that try to scare so constantly that they only create fear and end up boring or being too predictable, Smile is not, Smile is calm, even if you are dying of fear, you will do it calmly, slowly, observing very well all the elements that make you feel that way. Smile has an excessive amount of scare jumps, almost that there is one every ten minutes, or less time, but it's more or less like that, and while I hate scare jumps because they are rarely well done and give more laughter than fear, with this movie I could not wait for them to happen, I wanted the scare jumps at all times, I could not stand it, and this is because of the calm pace of the movie, usually the moments of the scare jumps are very loud, and suddenly everything calms down and that's when the scare jump takes place, well not here, here the rhythm never accelerates, here there is never a sudden silence before the scare jump because there is always calm and quiet, even if you know that a scare jump is coming, you can still get scared and surprised, because they are all different, they have different elements and are magnificently created, I loved them, and I hate them in almost all the movies.

It was very weird to see A-Train from The Boys as Rose's fiancé, it was very weird, I never got used to it, it was a completely useless role in itself that never served any purpose. Another one that was never useful was Rose's sister, I don't even remember her name, damn, I didn't like her from the first moment I saw her, and later when we learned about the history of the two of them with their mother, I didn't like her, and that's another drama, Rose has a giant secret that has its origin with the death of her mother, and that has generated more problems than she can imagine, than we can imagine, I think that only Rose's ex-boyfriend was useful for something in the movie.

The movie is a marvel in showing the mental and physical deterioration of someone when something in our mind begins to affect us and completely alters our lives. The initial image of Rose is correct, with everything in its place, she trying as much as possible to show herself as serene, stable, a person who can be trusted, and in the course of the movie we will see how everything goes to hell, how she even stops trusting herself, it's horrible, that affected me more than it should have, but not as much as it could have.

    image.png

The ending is a cradle tale of terror that only serves to traumatize children and make them grow up with fears they should never have. I loved it. The ending was not what scared me, if not what is before the ending, fuck, what they show, the way they portray it, all that made me feel 8 years old again as I watched in fear my father trying to defend me when I knew he was never going to listen to me and would only make things worse my attempt to defend myself; I felt like that again and almost cried, it was a very horrible feeling, but then it all went away and I could smile remembering the scene, a very childish smile comported with the terrifying scene that almost didn't let me sleep yesterday.

The trailer is very weird, even after watching the movie I didn't understand it, it makes very clear everything that happens, but it has an excessive amount of unconnected scenes that just confuse, well, that's after I watched the movie because I don't know what my perspective of the trailer would be if I had seen it before watching the movie. This movie is very good, but if you don't like calm things, you won't enjoy it, because it's not slow, that should be made clear, it just has a much calmer pace when compared to the rest of horror movies of this type. I loved it. The cat didn't deserve the ending it got.

    image.png
