I didn't believe people when they said this was a great movie. At best I expected something passable and fun, but I concede that the popular opinion on this one is right. Despite dropping Sonic into the real world, in a lot of ways this still ends up feeling like Sonic. Despite my original reservations on casting Him Carry, he manages to feel like Robotnik. So, that said, what is this movie even about?

Well, Sonic is now on Earth after being sent away from his home. He is trying to keep himself secret so that no one will try to make use of his incredible power. However, he is discovered by the smartest man in the world, Dr. Robotnik. The plot itself revolves around Sonic trying to get his rings back to travel to a new world and escape capture. There isn't anything interesting plotwise happening, but that's okay. What carries this show is two things: action and characters.

The movie has a lot of fun animating the scenes with Sonic running around as everyone else is seemingly unmoving. Even though it's exactly what you would come to expect out of a scene like this in a comedy, the spots are really funny and when it calls for it, the action is legitimately intense. I was not expecting as much visually pleasing destruction as I got going into this movie. And it helps that Sonic himself is a lot of fun, so it's easy to enjoy seeing him playing around with the environment in a way only a speedster could do.

If you are going into this movie expecting anyone to act like a person would act in these scenarios, you are in the wrong movie. You have to kind of forget how people actually are and how anyone would reasonably act in a given scenario because if things like that bother you the movie will quickly fall apart. The movie relies entirely on you liking the characters to keep you invested, and frankly, it does that very well. Sonic is easy to care about with how funny he is, and being able to understand that he's just been alone for a while. Sonic was never a very in-depth character, but he always did have a certain cool guy charm to him.

But that isn't what makes the movie, what makes the movie is Jim Carry. As mentioned I seriously underestimated his ability to be Robotnik, and in hindsight, I shouldn't have. Robotnik is always portrayed as, to some degree, an eccentric goofball. And while the movie is nothing but real-life actors and Sonic as the CG element, everyone in this movie acts more like they are in a cartoon. Of course, Jim Carry was going to nail someone like Robotnik. Yeah, there's a certain quick wit he can have that wasn't part of the original character, but I'm not going to begrudge a movie for taking a few liberties. At the end of the day, he still feels like Robotnik.

My favorite scene in the movie isn't even relevant, it's just Robotnik dancing around weirdly to Where Evil Grows while he's waiting for an energy analysis to complete. But he's just so in love with himself and having so much fun it's hilarious to watch.

It's one of those movies that there isn't a lot to say about it, because it's not trying to be much. What it wanted to be was a movie where Sonic was in the real world and got up to some crazy shenanigans with some bizarre characters, all while trying to keep the feel of the characters intact. It was better than anyone thought it was going to be, and honestly, I think it ranks up there as one of the best live-action adaptations of any video game, possibly the best. Even if you don't know anything about Sonic, it's a lot of fun, and if you do there are enough moments that make you feel like the people behind this movie cared at least a little for the little guy. The movie is definitely worth a watch.

NOte: Images used in review were grabbed from IMDB, I was having issues grabbing shots from Amazon directly.

  2. Sonic was a fun watch!@trumpman1717d

This movie kept popping on my Netflix feed for weeks now, but I kept ignoring it.

As a kid born in the late 80s, I spent a large chunk of my childhood playing Sega games and I have plenty of sweet memories involving Sonic the hedgehog. Usually movies like that tend to be dog shit cash grabs so I avoid em.

Anyways, today with nothing better to watch I decided to give it to go. And to my surprise it wasn't that bad. I actually enjoyed it! In my opinion the only serious problem with the movie is the autistic acting by Jim Carrey in the role of doctor robotnik.

Overall, a fun yet forgettable film based on a video game character that doesn't suck balls. Can't wait for the sequel, as the film leaves plenty of material to work with :)

    I will give it a 6.5 out of 10.

Computer games adaptations have a bad reputation, but Sonic the Hedgehog breaks that bad streak.

Sonic the Hedgehog is a super cute and fun movie! I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. The movie had to go through a major character re-design after the first terrible trailer, it's usually not a good sign. But, this movie listened to the audience, changed the way Sonic looks. In return we got a fun, great looking, upbeat movie.

Sonic the Hedgehog was directed by Jeff Fowler. This is his theatrical directorial debut and he only directed short movies prior to this movie. But you couldn't tell that from this movie, it is fantastic. The movie is based on the beloved computer game character Sonic. It is a children's movie, but adults are going to enjoy this one as well. It is just great fun all around.

Sonic, who is voiced by Ben Schwartz, is a cute and fast alien from another planet that escapes from his home world to Earth. He stays pretty much to himself and just watches others until one unfortunate day he draws the attention of the government. In a not so brilliant move the government decides to send Dr. Robotnik to figure out what is going on. I don't think I've seen Jim Carrey connected with audiences in a role so wonderfully in a really too long time. But now the adorable and hyper active Sonic must join forces with Officer Tom, who is played by brilliantly by James Marsden, to evade Dr. Robotnik and get Sonic out of Earth. The plot is simple, but the movie is great.

Obviously, the heart of the movie is Sonic. He is just adorable. He is like a little hyper active kid. Ben Schwartz does a brilliant job voicing him, even though usually I don't like Schwartz. Sonic is just a lonely hedgehog on Earth, you can sense him loneliness. And you can also sense his enthusiasm when he finally gets to have friends and meet people. Even though he is a CGI character, there is a lot of heart to him.

James Marsden has the hardest job in this movie. He needs to play a friend to a CGI character, which means that throughout most of filming he was working alone. Doing all of these fun, comical or emotional scenes on his own with no one to act against. He is a police officer who has to break the law in order to help him new alien friend. Obviously, he is not going to betray his friend. Even though he has his own adorable family and career to think of. He just brings so much heart to his character and movie, in a very fatherly way.

Now Jim Carrey is brilliant in this movie. Everything he does just works. He looks ridicules on purpose. He is socially incompetent on purpose. He is super smart in an evil fun way. And most importantly, he is over the top acting in the way that only Jim Carrey can act. He is cartoonish, funny, charismatic and over the top in a brilliant way that reminds you of how much you used to love his comedic performances. You will love him in this movie for sure.

Sure, there are a few fart jokes that are meant for the younger ages, but this family film will warm the hearts of all viewers of all ages. It is fun, fast paced, entertaining, heartfelt and just a really cute movie to watch. It's not a masterpiece, but if you are looking for a feel good movie for the family, or just for you, you should totally check it out.

This movie came out in the middle of February when the pandemic was starting to make waves, so you might have missed it and you should fix that mistake. I did. Luckily, despite the fact that the movie was hurt from the pandemic, we are getting a sequel even though it did just ok business at the box office. Which I am really happy about. This movie is just so cute and fun. You should totally watch it.

  5. All The 'Sonic The Hedgehog' Design Changes They Made For The Live Action Film | Pop Culture Decoded@cryplectibles2418d
In April of this year, Paramount released a trailer for their live-action take on SEGA’s "Sonic The Hedgehog" franchise. Fans hated it. They attempted to make Sonic more “realistic” but ended up creating something fairly disturbing. Due to the backlash, the film’s director, Jeff Fowler, promised fans he would change Sonic’s design to make him more like the iconic character we all know and love. The newly released trailer has received a much warmer response. Watch as we break down the differences between Paramount’s first and second version of "Sonic the Hedgehog."
