Hello, Movies & TV friends! I've been watching some Ryan Gosling movies that are a bit old by now but were unknown to me. He isn't one of my favorite actors, but I feel he is a great actor and has movies that are truly worth watching—not just because of his work developing different characters, but because there is creativity and different ideas in every movie I've seen him in. Today, I would like to recommend one that is quite old, from the year 2005 if I'm not mistaken, called Stay. I didn't know about this movie, and in fact, it was my sister who recommended it to me. The plot seemed quite interesting and it falls within the movie genres that I like, so I decided to watch it 👀🎬.
Stay takes us into the life of Dr. Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor), a psychiatrist who happens to meet a new patient referred by a colleague. The patient is named Henry Lethem (Ryan Gosling), a young university art student who is visibly affected emotionally and psychologically. When Dr. Sam meets him, he realizes that he is an extremely depressed patient, with suicidal thoughts and with voices that the patient himself claims to hear, not knowing whether they are real or not. But the premise of the story is that Dr. Sam practically risks his life to keep his patient alive, as Henry has already made the decision to commit suicide.
This movie was directed by Marc Forster and written by David Benioff; it is a story that mixes thriller, suspense, and drama. The Doctor and the patient are the main protagonists of the film, and both build a relationship that leads them to test their own mental limits. Henry Lethem is a deeply disturbed patient, which can be seen in his actions, his way of speaking, how he expresses himself about life, and the feelings of guilt he carries as a result of a traumatic event he claims to have experienced in the past. It is difficult because, as a patient, he appears, says disturbing things, and then disappears, which keeps Dr. Sam constantly on alert for any sign of danger or self-harm from Henry.
It should be clarified that although this movie is very short and might seem easy to watch, it actually mixes many events together to reach its final conclusion. It starts with the patient-doctor relationship, and then becomes chaotic due to the doctor's obsessive fixation on the fact that Henry might hurt himself. But at the same time, Sam is experiencing chaos in his own life; he is in a relationship with a woman who is also unstable, whom he met as a patient and who became his partner. He is also highly alert due to the lack of news from his colleague, who was the person treating Henry before.
It's incredible that this movie didn't get more publicity, perhaps because of the year it came out and the lack of social media that we have today. The themes, the scenes, the actors, the music—everything makes it a movie that is truly worth watching, keeping you alert and drawing conclusions long before it ends. It plays with the viewer's mind and makes you think you know what you are watching, or that you have an idea of where the story is going, and then everything ends completely differently. I found it incredible and highly recommendable.
The performances were undoubtedly key to making the movie feel real, carrying that pressure of experiencing an anxiety where you don't know what is going to happen. Ryan Gosling plays the role of a completely depressed young man with an altered perception of reality, carrying a lot of guilt for something that happens in the story—which is key to understanding the ending later on. He is definitely a great actor, and it's a shame I hadn't seen more of his work before, but I'm excited to watch more movies he has participated in. Ewan McGregor's performance is also very good; he deserves immense credit for making you feel the desperation of a doctor who doesn't know how to help Henry, nor how to help himself.
In this movie, nothing is really what it seems. It is a story that might be a bit dense, but I liked the performances and the way the scenes were shot, making you feel even more tense while watching them. I would say it's almost a cult movie, and since I like these types of stories, I liked everything right up to the end—which I understood much better after talking to my sister. It is totally worth watching, especially if you are interested in these kinds of stories with psychological themes and a development that makes you doubt even your own conclusions. Hola amigos de Movies & TV, estuve viendo películas de Ryan Gosling que ya son algo antiguas pero que no conocía. El no es de mis actores favoritos pero siento que es un gran actor y que tiene películas que valen la pena ver, no solo por su trabajo desarrollando diferentes personajes sino porque hay creatividad y ideas diferentes en cada película que he visto donde aparece él. Hoy quisiera recomendarles una que es bastante antigua, del año 2005 si no me equivoco llamada Stay. Esta película no la conocía y de hecho mi hermana fue quien me la recomendó, la trama parecía bastante interesante y entra dentro de los géneros de películas que a mí me gustan así que decidí verla 👀🎬.
Stay nos lleva hacia la vida del Dr. Sam Foster (Ewan McGregor) un psiquiatra quien tiene la casualidad de conocer a un nuevo paciente derivado por una colega. El paciente se llama Henry Lethem (Ryan Gosling) quien es un joven estudiante de artes en la universidad, pero que se ve visiblemente afectado emocional y psicológicamente. El Dr. Sam cuando lo conoce se da cuenta que es un paciente sumamente deprimido, con ideas suicidas y con voces que el mismo paciente dice escuchar y no entender si son reales o no. Pero la premisa de la historia es que el Dr. Sam se juega casi la vida por mantener con vida a su paciente, quien ya ha tomado la decisión de suicidarse.
Esta película fue dirigida por Marc Forster y escrita por David Benioff, es una historia que mezcla el thriller, suspenso y drama en la historia. El Doctor y el paciente son los protagonistas principales de la película, ambos crean una relación que los lleva a medir sus propios límites mentales. Henry Lethem es un paciente sumamente perturbado, se puede notar en sus acciones, en su manera de hablar, de expresarse sobre la vida y sobre las ideas de culpabilidad que siente producto de un evento traumático que según él vivió en el pasado. Es difícil porque el como paciente aparece y dice cosas perturbadoras y luego desaparece lo que hace que el Dr. Sam siempre este alerta ante cualquier indicio de peligro o autolesion de Henry.
Hay que aclarar que está película aunque es muy corta y parezca fácil de ver, realmente mezcla muchos eventos para poder llegar a la conclusión final. Empieza desde la relación entre paciente y médico, luego se vuelve caótica producto de la idea obsesiva que se hace el médico ante el hecho de que Henry pudiera hacerse daño. Pero al mismo tiempo vive un caos en su propia vida, tiene una relación con una mujer también inestable que conoció como paciente y que se convierte en su pareja. También está muy alerta ante el hecho de no tener noticias de su colega, quien era la persona que veía antes a Henry.
Es increíble que está película no tuviera más publicidad, tal vez por el año en que salió y la falta de redes sociales que hoy en día existen. La temática, las escenas, los actores, la música, todo hace que sea una película que realmente vale la pena ver y que te mantiene alerta y sacando conclusiones desde mucho antes de terminarla. Juega con la mente de quién está mirándola y hace que pienses que sabes lo que estás viendo o que tienes una idea de por dónde va la historia y luego todo termina de otra manera. Me pareció increíble y realmente recomendable.
Las actuaciones fueron sin duda clave para que la película se sintiera real y con esa presión de vivir una angustia donde no sabes que va a suceder. Ryan Gosling hace un papel de un joven totalmente deprimido, con una percepción de la realidad alterada, con mucha culpabilidad por algo que sucede en la historia y que es clave para entender luego el final, es sin duda un gran actor y que pena que no hubiera visto más de sus trabajos antes, pero estoy emocionada por ver más películas donde el participó. También la actuación de Ewan McGregor es muy buena, el se lleva por demás el crédito de hacerte sentir la desesperación de un doctor que no sabe ni cómo ayudar a Henry y tampoco como ayudarse a sí mismo.
Realmente en esta película nada es lo que parece, es una historia tal vez un poco densa pero me gustaron las actuaciones y la manera en la que grabaron las escenas, te hacen sentir aún más tenso mientras las ves. Es una película casi que de culto diría yo, y como me gustan este tipo de historias me gusto todo hasta el final que luego hablando con mi hermana comprendí mejor. Vale totalmente la pena verla, sobre todo si les interesan este tipo de historias con temas psicológicos y con un desarrollo que te hace dudar hasta de tus propias conclusiones. Les recomiendo verla 🫣🎬.
