The first season of The Buccaneers wasn't exactly a hit on my list of favorites, but it wasn't lousy either. It had its twists and turns, its touch of drama and, above all, enough spark to leave me curious about what would come next. And of course, when the second season arrived I thought: "ok, this is where the story can take off"... but what I found was something very different.
For me it didn't take off, it sank. Because yes, although the actors did a decent job, their characters came close to being unbearable (and some of them did it effortlessly). And it's a shame, because it was a story that promised quite a bit, but in the end it got caught up in its own drama without knowing where to move forward.

The story doesn't feel stagnant or padded, it simply moves awkwardly towards a denouement that does little to justify everything that has dragged up to that point.

This constant double standard turns her into a self-made victim, with an attitude that ends up being so unbearable that it borders on the ironic: everything she tried to avoid in order to protect her sister, ends up happening precisely because of her selfish actions.
The problem is that there is never a moment to empathize with Nan. There is no redemption, no growth, not even a hint of self-criticism. If in the first season she was just an immature and indecisive girl who wanted everyone to like her, in this second season, having more power, she only became more arrogant and haughty. Instead of evolving, she became a character that scares the viewer away, and whose presence is so heavy that it makes you want to leave the series.... But, as I like gossip, obviously I had to end it.
It is important to clarify that this is an opinion of Nan St. George's character, and it is necessary to know how to separate the character from her actress. The actress is not to blame for having been given a bad script.

Theodore, Duke of Tintagel
Theo is, ironically, my "least crumbly" friend. All it took was for an attractive woman to pay attention to him, for him to be half in love. And yet, I never disliked him. He tried with Nan, but I wouldn't stand living with her either😬 What hurt me is that Theo was a puppet inside the story: his mother, his wife and even his best friend pulled the strings at their convenience, without giving him the place he deserved. Still, I agreed with the final decision he made, and although I don't know if there will be a third season, the only thing I hope is that the narrative justice he was denied so far will come in the form of genuine happiness.

The same thing happened with the soundtrack: although it accompanied the important moments, on several occasions it felt anticlimactic, as if it didn't quite fit with what was happening.
On the other hand, the subplots were a pleasant surprise. In this season they felt more genuine, better constructed and with an emotional touch that really hit home. There was even one scene in particular that broke me and made me cry, because not only was it well written, but it conveyed pain and truth. Those kinds of moments are what elevate the story and make watching it not completely a waste of time.
