  1. Vikings Valhalla Season 3: Set The Bar High To Fumbled Its Finale - REVIEW@skiptvads695d
    Source

The last season of the show based on Norse mythology is out and it is not the grand finale that the audience expected. The third season of the show ties up the loose ends of the story that was started in the first season and this is a great shame because the final season is rather a mess. This being a fan of the show since the beginning, I couldn’t help but feel let down and annoyed by how the events unfolded. The season is rather packed and the writers seem to have tried to fit in as much as they could, which left many story arcs feeling rather rushed. It is like watching a marathon runner in the final mile, struggling for breath and getting into a poor running position. Although there are some fun scenes and character interactions, the game is rather rushed and feels like it lacks the polish that could have made it great. In this article, we will be discussing what was good, what was bad, and why this final season is a perfect example of how the series could have been given a much better ending.

    A Rushed Farewell

Too Many Characters, Too Little Time

The main problem with this season is it is filled with too many characters and there are just not enough scenes to give each of them their due, specially when it comes to who is going to rule Kattegat and who is going to rule England once Canute is gone, that scene felt so hard to watch with him trying to make excuses of why and who is going to rule between his sons with Emma and Aelfgifu. It feels as if the show is attempting to do too much at once and in doing so some elements inevitably suffer. There are new villains and side characters that are introduced but they are not given as much time as we would like to know more about them, it is the case of the battle between Mangus and Freidis, felt so lame while on the other side of the world Harald was getting all the attention necessary to develop his story. This is quite annoying because some of the new characters that are introduced appear to be quite compelling but I still felt each episode ran out of time to get to know them before the story shifts focus to another sub plot, probably not know them better say about their past but at least let them take their time to have some real arguments and fights. If we really think about it between Mangus attacking Freidis village and her getting tight to a poll to get burn how many times they did really had an argument or properly fight?, another scene that piss me off was how easy they killed Canute's father when on season one and two the man was a bad ass who out smart most of them.

This is because everything is so fast paced that many of the story development are left rather unexplored, just like Canute's father that show up and then immediately killed. Characters will talk about their goals at the beginning of the season and then either the plot will be wrapped up rather quickly or completely ignored, the case of Canute how he had a great moment when visiting the Pope and starting a fight over there and his second best scene was close to the end when he had to name an heir, what else significant he did? the scene where they had him mimic Ragnar sitting looking at the land was cool though. It's a shame because there are some rather good concepts present here, but they are not given the chance to develop as they should.

The season also has a problem of changing the scenes and story lines too often and too frequently. At one point we are tracking one character and the next we are with another character in the middle of the other side of the world, it is the case of Canute, Harald and Freidis. It gives the story a rather fragmented and confusing feeling at times, especially annoying because in the previous seasons the show seemed to handle multiple story development while still maintaining the flow of the show, they dedicated enough time to each character at a fixed location and not jumping from one place to another, three or five times within the same episode.

    The Good Stuff

    Action Sequences Performances

I have to say that the season does come up with some decent action scenes, most of them from Harald and his glory with the Romans. There is a huge action sequence at the beginning of the episode which somewhat echoes the famous London Bridge fight of the first season, very similar where Leif (Green Lander) use a lot of science unknown for many to breach the castle. It is not as great, but it still has some nice battle strategies and impressive fight scenes, this are some of the moments make me recall why the show is so good when it is at its best, spin off are not always the best, rarely top off the original series and I was never expecting Vikings Valhalla to be the case although adding Valhalla to it sets the bar very high.

The cast still delivers as well as they can with the material they are provided with, the cast is mostly good, especially Harold, Freydis, and Leif’s actors. Despite the fact that the writing is not always on the highest level, the authors succeed in creating rather realistic and interesting characters, the same applies to the secondary characters and the actors representing Canute, Godwin, and Emma gave their best.

    Missed Opportunities

    Character and Plot Development

Everything is so fast that people do not have enough time to build up their characters and become more complex, such as Leif and Freydis, are rather underdeveloped and seem to have little to do in many episodes when they were in the eye of the storm on previous season. It is my opinion their story do not receive the closure they require after three seasons of development. The ending feels like the writers had more seasons in mind but had to rush and tie up the loose ends, this results in some rather cutting corners conclusions and one is left with many questions that will most probably never be answered, all of the sudden we saw Canute having troubles to close his hand and they call it, he is dying because he is old, wtf.

The plot in England with the characters of Canute, Emma and Godwin seems somewhat out of place and separate from the rest of the series, reminds me a lot of Vikings season where Avar goes to Russia and it felt so disconnected from the rest of the original Vikings story but at least he had to much screen time that the episodes were fixed on him giving enough context.

After finish the series I got to the conclusion that his probably was a budget problem, the budget for this season was not as large as in the previous ones. The large scale fights that were a staple of the earlier seasons are not as frequent, been the scenes that cost money, for example when Harald got into Constantinople, the castle look so small, the scenario itself felt cheap. The action scenes are not as frequent and when they do happen they seem to be on a smaller level. From a production perspective it is quite reasonable but as an audience, I felt left feeling slightly deflated as the climax of the series is not as spectacular as I thought it would be.

The third season of Vikings Valhalla seems to be a rather hasty and unsatisfactory finale to what was initially a rather interesting sequel. Although there are some interesting and exciting scenes and some of the cast gives excellent performances, the season is rather poor due to the lack of proper character development, as well as the presence of too many characters and the feeling that the creators were in a hurry. It is annoying because there is so much that could have been done to make it a much better series with a much better conclusion, but instead everything feels like it was just quickly thrown together. If they decide to do another Spin Off I would for sure watch it since I'm a sucker for this type of Viking theme content specially if they mix it with Romans, recently saw Those About to Die (2024) and it felt cheap at first but supper interesting, I will soon do a post about it, if Vikings could find a way to keep creating more Spin Off and interconnecting them like TWD is doing it would be awesome although its a big project that requires lots of budget.

  2. Vikings: Valhalla - Segunda temporada // Vikings: Valhalla - Season Two@erigm1240d

¡Hola amigos!

Hello friends! Today I bring you the review of the second season of Vikings: Valhalla. I'll try not to give too many spoilers although being a second season it's going to be complicated. That's why I leave you the review of the first season in case you want to get into this world and start watching the series. I'm excited that I've been on Hive for a little over a year now and I can start sharing past reviews of the first seasons of the series I watch. Anyway, I won't get sidetracked, let's move on to the plot of this second part.

¿De qué trata? - What is it about?

For those who don't know, this series is set about 100 years after what happened in the Vikings series. Here we continue with the dispute over territories and who rules them. Power is still the main driver of everything, with the difference that the focus is placed between two powers: those who are pagan and idolize many gods and those who are Christians, so they have only one God. There is not so much fight over whether one is a Viking or an Anglo-Saxon, as we can see in other productions of the style. What has more weight here is a theme of religions, and the desire to obtain more power and recognition of feats, of course.

    Vikings Valhalla 1.5.png Source

The plot is divided into several subplots. We can follow that of Leif, who comes from Greenland trying to escape from that hostile land and his violent past, and forge his own destiny. He ends up in Kattegat, without a fixed course after what happened at the end of the first season and with many doubts regarding his pagan beliefs. He is quite lost in many aspects. We have Harald who is determined to be the King of all Norway. However, to do this he needs to gather an army to take on those who rule Kattegat now. And he continues his journey with this goal in mind. Then there is Freydis, she is Leif's sister. She is a very important pillar for the deep-rooted Viking beliefs. In the first season she was named as the Protector of the Faith and that is going to be her role in this new season. Though first she will have to make amends for her past mistakes and believe in herself to accept her destiny.  There is also the plot of Olaf, Harald's half-brother and the most Christian Viking that exists. He is seeking revenge against Freydis for something that happened in the past. His mission is to put an end to all the pagan Vikings and their beliefs, unbelievable, right? And finally, there is the Anglo-Saxon plot. The one involving the political intrigues surrounding Queen Emma of Normandy and her government that they are trying to overthrow. All these plots will be interwoven with each other to the point that at some point they will intersect.

It is a second part that I have been waiting for, although I must say that I did not have such high expectations. While I had liked the first one, there is always the doubt of whether they will be able to improve or, at worst, get worse. I think this time they went for the better or remained stable. What I can tell you is that when I wanted to realize it, I was already on chapter 4. A series that makes me forget about time and keep playing its chapters means that they are doing something good.

    Vikings Valhalla 3.5.png Source

The truth is that all the plots were interesting to me, there are always some that stand out more than others but they were all very good. Maybe I felt a little weak the Anglo-Saxon plot that in the previous season I had liked quite a lot, Emma had seemed to me a quite strategic character. I put my chips on her because I had liked that she will think with her head and be strong from that side, bringing out the ability of Viking warrior women, I liked that she was smart and that is her power. However, this time she got a bit of a jab at that character, I still feel she has a lot more to show and even though she made some mistakes, she's on the right track. She is the one who may end up unmasking another character very close to her.

    Vikings Valhalla 4.5.png Source

On this occasion I could see the growth of Freydis, she stopped being a child and hiding to begin to show her face and fight for her people. She became a fair, honest character, who wants to unite her people, to make them participate, since no one is less and all deserve the grace of their gods. While his path diverged from his brother's, and even Harald's, he did quite well and is building his own destiny. I don't know what will be in store for him now that he has fulfilled one of his promises and seems to have closed a crack. We shall see.

    Vikings Valhalla 5.5.png Source

Although one of my favorite plots was that of Leif and Harald, the two of them embarked on a journey together to Constantinople with a rather varied group of people. It was a good plot, with a lot of knowledge for Leif, who moved away from killing and brute force to be interested in learning the art of letters from Mariam, a scholar who accompanied him on this journey. And we have Harald, who brings the right dose of humor to the series, plus none of this would have happened if he was not put in his head that he had to go on this dangerous journey to get the money to buy an army.

    Vikings Valhalla 6.5.png Source

I also liked the new characters, especially the women, I had told you before that I usually pay special attention to them, I'm looking for the next Lagertha maybe. If they do a third season I'd like to keep seeing more of any of them.

    Vikings Valhalla 7.5.png Source

The scenery and setting of this series still brings me nostalgia of other similar ones, I love the music and the action scenes, although there weren't so many this time. There wasn't much carnage, I'm happy with this because I didn't have to mourn any deaths that I will care too much about but at the same time upset because I was expecting a little more of this (well but agree hahaha). However, it was a good second part and it makes me think about the situations that could happen in a next season, if it happens. I'm curious what they're going to put the focus on this time, I'm guessing trying to get Kattegat back again, for once a million times.

In short, I recommend this series to all lovers of Vikings and history, as the historical facts that occur are also interesting to watch even if they are told in a way that makes it appealing to the viewer of the series. Thanks for coming this far and reading. See you next time!

  3. Vikings: Valhalla - ¿Otra serie de vikingos? // Vikings: Valhalla - Another viking series?@erigm1553d

¡Hola querida comunidad!

Hello dear community! How are you? I hope very well. In these last weeks a couple of series that I was waiting for were released and will be released. So as soon as I can watch them I will tell you about them.

In the meantime, today I bring you the review of Vikings: Valhalla, created by screenwriter Jeb Stuart.

Ever since I saw Michael Hirst's Vikings, I was fascinated with the Viking world, so I followed the whole series of Ragnar and his sons until it came to an end. But, it wasn't the end of the Viking Age.

So, since there is more of the historical facts left to tell, this sort of sequel came out, even though it's not really.

    Separadores-72.png

    Trama

    Plot

Viking: Valhalla is set about 100 years after the events that took place in Vikings. Here we have as protagonists some of the grandchildren of those characters who, obviously, are no longer around.

One of them are the brothers, Leif Erikson and Freydis Eriksdotter, sons of Erik the Red. The two of them embark from Greenland, along with a group of friends, to the coast of Kattegat in search of revenge against a Christian Viking who raped Freydis when she was younger and left a Christian cross branded on her back.

On the other hand we have Harald Sigurdsson, a Christian Viking who grew up in the lands that were ceded by the Anglo-Saxons to the Vikings, in those first Viking invasions, with the motive of bringing peace between the peoples. But, King Aethelred II, got tired of having to share lands with the Vikings so he ordered a massacre on St. Britius day.

Harald Sigurdsson managed to survive, and in order to seek revenge he joins King Canute of Denmark to gather an army of Viking warriors and go for the head of King Aethelred.

He is counterattacked in the Anglo-Saxon kingdom by Emma of Normandy, wife of King Aethelred, his wise queen, and Earl Godwin, an ambitious Anglo-Saxon advisor.

In a new world, where several Vikings are turning to Christianity and abandoning their old gods and pagan rites, a new struggle of religions also begins.

    Personal opinion

I was excited to see this new generation of Vikings, new adventures, new challenges. In these series there is always something that catches me, I don't know why I like them so much, I think it's because they are historical fiction, this combination of real facts with fiction is an attractive mix for me.

We start by seeing how the Vikings who lived in the Anglo-Saxon lands, in peace, were brutally massacred by orders of the King, who believed that there were no survivors but just that day a group of warriors had embarked to go to another place. Among them was Harald Sigurdsson, one of the main characters.

    vikings-valhalla-sam-corbett-1638725941.jpg Image

Then we meet Leif and Freydis, who come sailing from Greenland and arrive in Kattegat after a relentless storm that would have knocked down any ship, so they are surprised that they were able to get there.

It brought me a lot of nostalgia to see the shores and the city of Kattegat because it's the same as the one in Vikings, I know I don't have to make comparisons because they are two different series, but sometimes it's hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.

    vikings-season-1-cast-photo-1645803820.png Image

    Personajes/Characters

In all these series I usually pay a lot of attention to the women because I want to find out who I'm going to admire next. I thought it was going to be Freydis, but I feel like she still has a lot to learn, she's a little immature, and she's very much on her own. I kind of haven't connected with her yet, but I'm putting my chips on her. She has courage and tenacity.

    frida-gustavsson-as-freydis-in-vikings-valhalla-1646069524.jpg Image

On the other hand, the one that surprised me a lot was Emma from Normandy, that's the kind of character I love, so calculating, with so much cunning, who knows how to use her head more than the strength or the position of power she's in. I feel she's a worthy character and hopefully she can continue to grow. Plus, she has Viking blood in her.

    fotonoticia_20220227130946_1200.jpg Image

I also liked the character of King Canute of Denmark, he has this dream of being the king of all Vikings and conquer many seas and lands. But he also has a head, he is a strategic character.

    AAAAQR74F3cMCGUXasvVRYkHln11mirfDyX-nDn2y7pN1bve0Dv2krKzX5kYeMJjmvV-QDe5DTXWCurLsXlklAVJTThy7oW0dBazZYiVOaSDVluPvYeVZ-6Kk9NknFt4GnY0r15CKaflCGltZHW4Spwf-ZlO.jpg Image

Then we have Leif, Freydis' brother, who tries to forge his own name, because everyone knows him and treats him as the "son of...". For those who don't know, Erik the Red was exiled for being a traitor. So he carries that burden of being compared to his father. So he is seeking recognition for what he is and what he is worth. He's an exceptional navigator, that was demonstrated over the course of the series, he's also a great fighter. But at some point, his life will take a significant turn and he will begin to doubt his own beliefs regarding the gods.

I do not want to forget Harald Sigurdsson, a Christian Viking. Being raised in Anglo-Saxon lands and baptized in the Christian faith, Harald is a Viking and a warrior as such, but he does not believe in gods, but in only one God. Here they come into conflict with the other Vikings, of pure stock let's say, since when Canute sends to gather men from everywhere, the pagan Vikings do not want to fight together with the Christian Vikings, and the Christian Vikings want to convert the pagans.

Harald has a half-brother who is a very orthodox Christian Viking, he wants to unify the religions, that is to say, to convert all the Vikings into Christians, for that reason they are not so welcome in those lands, but at the same time they are necessary for the Anglo-Saxon invasion.

These were the characters that caught my attention the most and that's why I dedicate these lines to them. I feel that Harald will be a key character, he is the one I had the hardest time to get his character. At one point I didn't know which side he would be on. There is material to exploit here.

Of course, there are also many other characters that have their contribution and important part. I'll leave that for you to discover, if you are interested in watching this series. They are all characters that really existed. That's the interesting thing about these stories. You know more or less what direction they can take if you know a little bit of past history. And if not, it is also a source of learning.

    Historia/History

The story of the series as such I feel it still lacks a lot of development, it's only the first season and it only had 8 episodes. It didn't attract me immediately but later I found myself looking forward to the time when I could sit down to watch an episode. But it's like it lacks a little more hooking, getting to know more of the characters, a little more blood too. I'm sorry, but I only expect these series to make me suffer, because I'm always a masochist.

The scenery was wonderful, the music could have been better, I like when there are such particular melodies and rhythms.

All in all, I feel it has room for improvement. But it's good to pass the time and for fans like me of this kind of stories. I really hope they do another season to see if it picks up, especially now that The Last Kingdom also ended and I think it would be the only series of this Viking themed series left, at least for now.

Have you seen it? Are you looking forward to seeing it?

    We are reading each other!
