Edwar Berger made an impact on me with his version about two years ago of All Quiet on the Front Lines. A powerful war film that boosted his international career. Before that he had already made several productions in Germany and had also dabbled in American series. After his previous film, he was looking forward to Conclave.

The Vatican is a place that holds many mysteries. What happens when a pope dies? What is the protocol? How is a new ruler of the powerful Catholic Church elected? Longtime devotees of this faith must imagine something mystical, but most likely it's all very earthly.

Behind those closed doors there must be a lot of conflict and intrigue. Conspiracies. Hypocrisy and the struggle for personal interests will surely prevail. Everything is politics, even down to the election of a new leader of a religion with considerable influence in the world. None of the Popes is appointed by a God, in reality it is a group of men (Cardinals) who meet, supposedly isolated from the outside world, for the necessary days to deliberate and vote which of them will be the one to sit on the throne. A purely political act.

That is what this story offers us. After the death of the Pope. Cardinal Thomas must organize the Conclave to elect the new leader. Berger recreates all the protocol and rituals that are followed when this happens. The pace and tone of the film make it an entertaining thriller. We soon realize that something is amiss. The interests and lust for power of the different cardinals become evident. Infighting and trickery will be used to discredit the others, all under that sacred atmosphere.

Edwar Berger me impactó con su versión hace unos dos años de Sin novedad en el frente. Una poderosa película bélica que impulsó su carrera internacional. Antes ya había realizado varias producciones en Alemania y también había incursionado en series americanas. Después de su anterior película, esperaba con impaciencia Cónclave.

El Vaticano es un lugar que encierra muchos misterios. ¿Qué ocurre cuando muere un Papa? ¿Cuál es el protocolo? ¿Cómo se elige a un nuevo gobernante de la poderosa iglesia católica? Los antiguos devotos de esta fe deben imaginarse algo místico, pero lo más probable es que todo sea muy terrenal.

Detrás de esas puertas cerradas debe haber muchos conflictos e intrigas. Conspiraciones. Seguramente prevalecerá la hipocresía y la lucha por los intereses personales. Todo es política, incluso hasta la elección de un nuevo líder de una religión con considerable influencia en el mundo. Ninguno de los Papas es nombrado por un Dios, en realidad se trata de un grupo de hombres (Cardenales) que se reúnen, supuestamente aislados del mundo exterior, durante los días necesarios para deliberar y votar cuál de ellos será el que se siente en el trono. Un acto puramente político.

Eso es lo que nos ofrece esta historia. Tras la muerte del Papa. El cardenal Thomas debe organizar el Cónclave para elegir al nuevo líder. Berger recrea todo el protocolo y los rituales que se siguen cuando esto sucede. El ritmo y el tono de la película la convierten en un thriller entretenido. Pronto nos damos cuenta de que hay algo que no cuadra. Los intereses y ansias de poder de los diferentes cardenales se hacen evidentes. Se utilizarán luchas intestinas y artimañas para desacreditar a los demás, todo ello bajo esa atmósfera sagrada.

It is impossible to find a candidate who has not yet had a stain from the past. This is what one of the characters says. There is no one who never makes a mistake. There is no such thing as a saint. This is logical. And we live in medieval times, where the power of this aigleis was so great that it plunged the Western world into darkness. Every religious organization is made up of human beings, therefore, no one is free from committing faults. Evidently, the serious thing about them is that they pretend and believe they have the right to be superior, when the truth is that they are only people who aspire to obtain power.

The arrival of a key figure. Cardinal Benmitez, unknown to the rest of the cardinals, is the strongest mystery of the story. There is also a final twist in the whole story that made me laugh out loud. I'm not going to tell you what it's about, but it's the only negative thing about the movie. The movie mesmerized me throughout its story, but I was not very satisfied with its resolution. I knew who might be elected the new Pope, but I didn't imagine the twisted revelation at the end.

A cast with great actors, headed by Ralp Fiennes in the role of Cardinal Thomas. He is the great protagonist and obviously his work is impeccable. Stanley Tucci and John Lithgow also stand out as Cardinals Bellini and Tremblay. The great movie star Isabella Rossellini has a character and is nominated for an Oscar as supporting actress, this if seems a bit over the top to me. Of course I enjoyed watching her, but I think her character only has two minutes and I didn't think it was a masterful performance, just correct.

The costume and set work is very good. Visually it is incredible, especially because it shows a world quite unknown to many viewers.

Es imposible encontrar un candidato que aún no tenga un amancha del pasado. Esto es lo que dice uno de los personajes. No hay nadie que nunca cometa un error. Los santos no existen. Es algo lógico. Y vivimos en la época medieval, donde el poder de este aigleis era tan grande que sumió al mundo occidental en la oscuridad. Toda organización religiosa está formada por seres humanos, por lo tanto, nadie está libre de cometer faltas. Evidentemente, lo grave de ellos es que pretenden y se creen con derecho a ser superiores, cuando la verdad es que sólo son personas que aspiran a obtener el poder.

La llegada de un personaje clave. El cardenal Benmitez, desconocido para el resto de los cardenales, es el misterio más fuerte de la historia. Además hay un giro final en toda la historia que me hizo reír a carcajadas. No les voy a contar de qué va, pero es lo único negativo de la película. La película me hipnotizó durante toda su historia, pero no quedé muy satisfecho con su resolución. Sabía quién podría ser elegido nuevo Papa, pero no me imaginaba la retorcida revelación del final.

Un reparto con grandes actores, encabezados por Ralp Fiennes en el papel del cardenal Thomas. Es el gran protagonista y obviamente su trabajo es impecable. También destacan Stanley Tucci y John Lithgow como los cardenales Bellini y Tremblay. La gran estrella de cine Isabella Rossellini tiene un personaje y está nominada al Oscar como actriz de reparto, esto si me parece un poco exagerado. Claro que disfrute viendola, pero creo que su personaje solo tiene dos minutos y no me parecio una interpretacion magistral, solo correcta.

El trabajo de vestuario y decorados es muy bueno. Visualmente es increíble, sobre todo porque muestra un mundo bastante desconocido para muchos espectadores.
