  1. The Defenders Episode 8 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3154d

    The Defenders.jpg

This episode lived up to my none-expectations at this point. The only thing it did right is set-up the next seasons of the individual character. This made me think that we will have a Marvel phase 2 problem - when the individual shows will return, we will all wonder why are the defenders are not teaming up again to solve their problems.

Now back to the episode, the last group fight made me cringe in a way that almost no show made me. Probably because Marvel-Netflix decided to save money and make a cheap show. The camera work wasn’t good, the song choice – I couldn’t think of anything worse to put in that fight scene and the chorography wasn’t impressive at all. It felt so unrelated to the rest of the show that it was distracting. Also, there was some huge inconsistences in the powers of our four heroes from the previous episode, that it was really annoying.

The best thing about this show was Luke Cage, Claire, Jessica Jones, Matt Murdock, Nelson and Karen. That’s it. At the end I couldn’t connect with Electra as the villain and didn’t understand her plan. The Hand was super disappointing after all this build up in Daredevil. They didn’t feel menacing or threatening. The Kingpin and Killgrave are way better villains.

I’m a bit biased in stating that Jessica Jones is my favorite character, but I basically watched this show to see Jessica Jones laugh at the other heroes and the unyielding woman did not disappoint. She has great chemistry with everyone and she got to kick ass her own way.

Matt Murdock made this show. The Hand felt like his fight a lot more than it felt like Danny Rand’s fight. His feelings towards Electra is the only thing that made me care on this show. That and how his friends love him.

Luke Cage and Claire felt like the heart of the show. Claire knows everyone, and Luke Cage is motivated by caring too much and yet being rational at the same time.

Danny Rand is just a plot device and doesn’t even feel like real character. I cared more about Misty Knight than I did about him.

But, the show did have a really good ending. So, I was left sort of satisfied with that.

You can skip this one. Although it might be difficult to understand the next seasons of each character as they will probably refer to the events happened in this show.

  2. The Defenders Episode 7 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3164d

    The Defenders.jpg

Just when I think this show is getting better, it falls into the trap of lazy writing. The episode started out great. There is a small time gap between the last episode and this one so there are a few things that audiences need to figure out. Our heroes are in trouble, the kind where they need to use their brains to figure their way out. However, they still manage to get out using their fists. The moral lessons were a bit cliché. Also, this show makes the police look really bad, from incompetent to standing in the way, this is bad PR.

They also does not know how to use Jessica Jones. Other than some sarcastic remarks and alcoholism, this show does not get her. She’s the detective, she should be figuring things out, not being led around or letting others figure it out.

Also, I don’t get Elektra or her point. There is an unnecessary flashback that tries to explain her, but fails in my opinion. Honestly, I hope she dies in the finale episode and it will not be Matt who kills her, because that will also be a cliché.

The hand again has proven that they are not a serious threat, but rather just an annoyance.

Still this episode had its good moments as well. The best by far is the fighting sequences at the end. It was very entertaining, and it was fun to see our heroes go all out. Also, Madame Gao is super fun and I feel she is the best villain in this show. There were some funny moments that made me laugh out loud. I felt that it was a fun and entertaining episode, but not on the level of an episode before the finale should be.

It’s a real shame the episode ended with a cliché. It would have been so much better without it, or if it was done differently. But, I could see it coming a mile away. It was just bad and lazy writing. It’s never good to finish an episode with a none-plot twist that just leaves you disappointed, without it, it would have been a rather good episode.

    I give it an 7/10.

  3. The Defenders Episode 6 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3198d

    The Defenders.jpg

This should have been episode 2 of this series. It had almost everything I wanted from the show.

    Let’s start with the bad:

Villains – Alexandra is just not working for me as a villain or as the leader of the hand. The role is just empty. We never see her do anything more worthy than the other leaders of the hand.

Elektra – Her search for her place in the world feels cliché.

The Hand – What is it that they do? I understand what they want, and their plan. But as an organization, they don’t feel very intimidating to me.

Jessica Jones – Matt gets to detective work and not Jessica? It’s her job!

    The good:

Jessica Jones and Matt Murdock – They don’t make a good team. He does almost everything. But she brings in the humor, which is important for us viewers. While from some reason he gets to play detective.

Danny Rand and Luke Cage – I like their talks and bantering. I can see them bonding and their differences makes them an interesting pairing in the show.

Fights – I don’t want to spoiler anything, but there are some interesting fighting scenes in this episode.

Plot twists – at last! Something happened in this episode that I couldn't guess it. Most viewers probably will, but I was surprised. Or thoughts it will come later on. And the show also gave us a new mystery to think about for the next episode. I must say, I am intrigued.

    I give it an 8/10.

  4. The Defenders Episode 5 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3202d

    The Defenders.jpg

The show finally shifts gears. Yes, at last we get more of everything. More action, actual answers and not just questions, reunions, and more of the supporting characters. Yet, somehow, all of this doesn’t feel enough.

The answers and events are not exactly satisfying. Alexandra is not the villain I was hoping for. Madame Gao is cooler and better than her in every single way. The Hand doesn’t feel like a very impressive organization, just super ninja, super stalker. Nothing we haven’t seen before.

I guess what I am trying to say is, that I feel that the heroes are totally safe and totally equipped to handle this treat. The mystery wasn’t mysterious enough. And Jessica Jones’ sarcasm can’t hold an entire show together.

The Elektra side plot was cheesy in a bad way. I do believe in cheesy in a good way. But they could have done so much with her, or do it in so many different ways.

For the first few minutes I thought the show was finally going to setup its game, but alas, false alarm.

    I give it a 6.5/10.

  5. The Defenders Episode 4 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3227d

    The Defenders.jpg

    Alright I am slightly intrigued.

This episode opens the mythos of the wars between the hand and the chased. We only get basic information and not in an interesting way. There is some mystery around the Iron Fist and how the Hand can use him, but honestly, I don't feel emotionally invested. Surprisingly, it's not Danny Rand's fault. I love Sigourney Viber, but we barely see her in this show. I know that we should feel some sympathy towards her character, but I don’t. Occasionally she’s just there and she’s impressive and she impressively wears cheap Versace knockoff. But as a character, as the leader of the Hand, I don't find Alexandra to be impressive at all. It's Marvel-Netflix fault that has got me used to high standard in villains like the Kingpin. For now, she's not there.

My MVP for this episode again is Jessica Jones. She always says exactly what I think about this show. Well, aside from the alcoholic sociopath parts. When she comments about the other characters and the events going on around her, that when I love her the most. Also, her fighting style is exactly right for her powers, evasions and force. I usually don't notice such things, but it is so different from the rest of the characters, and different from the last episode where she was really bad at evasion. But her best moment for me is the end of the episode, the way she shows up made me laugh and clap my hands at the TV screen for the first time during this show.

Luke Cage redeemed himself in this episode in my eyes by being reasonable, while Danny acts like the spoiled child that he says that he is not. Still, my second favorite character is Matt Murdock. His chemistry with Jessica is great, but his grief makes him a very compelling character.

I like the way this episode ended, I hope the show is moving in the correct direction.

I give it a 8/10. Just because of Jessica Jones.

  6. The Defenders Episode 3 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3228d

    The Defenders.jpg

Slow is the name of the game. Too slow apparently.

I must admit I am disappointed by a lot of things in this show. First, the show looks cheap. Alexandra is meant to be the head of a major cooperation, in reality she looks mediocre. Why? Because she is dressed like an aunt. Even the fancy offices, don’t look fancy to me. Sometimes the blood looks like cheap barbecue sauce, seriously, brown blood? The characters have moments when they are acting out of characters, because these are clearly not their show runners. The choreography is underwhelming as well. Going into to episode 4 I feel that the show is not a mystery, but doesn’t have a clear direction.

On the positive side, I still love the characters. Well, I love Jessica Jones. I love her interactions with Matt Murdock. Surprisingly, my least favorite character is Luke Cage. You have superpowers, you have seen some very strange stuff, how hard is it to believe in what your told? His attitude is all wrong and gets everyone into trouble, but not the kind that even moves the plot forward. Even Danny Rand is more likable than him. I didn’t watch Iron Fist, but he seems alright in this show, your average clueless rich boy in terms of character archetypes. The interaction between the characters is the only the thing that is keep it together, and Jessica Jones and Matt Murdock are keeping it fun.

    I give it a 7.5/10

  7. The Defenders Episode 2 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3234d

    The Defenders.jpg

The show is slowly picking up steam. The episode picks up a few hours after the cliffhanger of the previous episode. This episode is also more of a set up, but not just for our heroes, but also for out villains.

As for our heroes, each of them is still living in their own show. Matt Murdock is struggling with his Daredevil persona as if he’s a recovering alcoholic, just dying to put on the suit. Jessica Jones is head over heels with a case she took in the previous episode. Luke Cage is trying to help a kid in his neighborhood and Danny Rand is still looking for the hand. Similarly, to the last episode, only with slight shifts, but these shifts were enough to make me feel like the plot is moving forward and that the mystery is building.

There is also some set up for our villains. We get to get see the extent of their power, their influence, some of their goals, some of the soldiers, all just pieces of the puzzles, but not enough to put it together just yet.

This time the episode doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, but in a much more satisfying way. Which still didn’t get me to binge watch the show, but I am definitely on board.

    I give it a 7.5/10

  8. The Defenders Episode 1 Review – No Spoilers@readingdanvers3235d

    The Defenders.jpg

It’s a set up episode! Yes, I can’t binge watch. I’m incapable of it, sorry.

They are back! Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand. I’ve missed Jessica Jones’s sarcasm, anti-social behavior and her heart. I even missed some of the villains and I hope we get to see some more of them along the way.

Yes, it’s a set up episode. Some of it is good and some of it is bad. It was a slow episode, but I think it was to be expected from the tone of the previous shows. I think we are in for a more mystery season, than an action packed one, although there is some action in this episode. Also, I think we will see how some elements that were placed in Daredevil and Iron Fist will come together at last, giving the views a sense of good world building.

I don’t think that you must watch all of the characters shows before watching The Dedenders. I will be honest, I did not watch Iron First and Luke Cage and I felt that if I haven’t read what their shows were about, I wouldn’t understand this episode quite as well, but reading an article was enough for me. On the other hand, we see Matt Murdock again, and if you are waiting, like me, for some resolve of on a big issue from his show, I think you’ll have to wait for season 3. So, even though these are Daredevil show runners, I think he’s part of the episode was the most confusing part.

    Alexandra.jpg

Sigourney Weaver as the main villain is just a pleasure to watch. As Alexandra her motives are clear from the start, you can understand her and even identify with her to a certain limited extent. I think we are in for another excellent Marvel-Netflix villain.

It was still strange how when the camera focused on each character, the background lightening and music was different, it made you feel like the characters are still in different shows. It’s original, but strange on the eyes.

As all good episodes in a binge-watching format it ended on a cliffhanger. Not interesting enough to make me watch the next immediately.

    I give it 6/10.
