  1. The Deuce: David Simon paint another picture of the America (ENG - ITA)@serialfiller2258d

    Tunnel Wave.png

The art world is made up of large forgotten works or ones that have never achieved success. The world of TV is no exception, always ready to celebrate the great media caravans, to pump up global phenomena, to shift attention to one genre rather than another, but often too distracted to advertise and reward the true masterpieces of seriality. One of these is represented by a TV series recently finished and whose end probably represents one of the highest summits of contemporary series. We're talking about The Deuce series written and directed by one of the most prolific TV couples: George Pelecanos & David Simon. The creators of The Wire, Treme, Generation Kill and other TV gems this time have ventured into a very risky and neglected story in 3 seasons right away from the general public. Guests of the HBO set their last precious stone in New York. Not the big glossy apple, very high, rich and dazzling today but the rough, lively, dirty, sparkling and colorful New York of the 70s. To make everything even more muddy and reluctant was the theme chosen as the background of this latest story on society and human beings. The world of porn was the thread chosen by the 2 authors to tell the story of the transformation of New York and the world in general in the last decades.

    STEEMPOSSIBLE STORYCHAIN THEMAGAZINE.png

The Deuce is a masterpiece. Don't doubt it. His finale was moving, reflective and piercing in his ability to confront the ineluctable passage of time. Vincent's nostalgia for strolling along the streets of today's New York and remembering the faces and places of his youth, his maturity is something that breaks and devours the soul. And this is where the reflection from micro becomes macro, from inside to narration comes out of the screen. The most beautiful and richest city in the world where did it come from? Has it not become just a big New York window? What happened to New Yorkers? Who really is the Big Apple? The putrid and scum that inhabited the avenues in the 70s have indeed been defeated or only moved out of the center. The Deuce questions but above all answers. Today the big apple, and the world in general, is only a mirror for larks. A small space on earth to show off rolex, pay thousands of euros for a crazy evening, show off wealth and status quo, run towards Bot, securities and financial markets. Out of this bubble remains the scum, the rottenness, the poverty, the anger, the common people. Pelecanos and Simon tell us that in the 70s and 80s the powerful, the rich, the bureaucrats decided that it was time to give that city to the wealthiest and the tourists. To pay the price the Vincent Martino of this world, New Yorkers doc that could have told you about life, death and miracles of every bar, person and street of the big apple. Looking at the world, isn't it what is happening everywhere? In a few to enjoy everything, many to trudge. Vincent Martino was able to console himself with memories. Will we one day be able to say the same about our past? Not bad for a series on the world of prostitution and porn, right ?!

The Deuce è un capolavoro. The Deuce interroga ma sopratutto risponde.

    [Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/65817-the-deuce?language=en-US)

    ¡Corran y vayan a verla YA!

  3. [Films Critics] The Deuce@jsxchemistry2434d

Making series or films that manage to combine sensitive themes in their plots is extremely outstanding because not all directors and scriptwriters manage to fuse complicated themes in a way that neither opaque the other and that the whole production stands out as a whole. Well, The Deuce is a series that fantastically manages to unite in its plot topics such as porn, prostitution, drugs and other abuses in a story with a constant rhythm that in each chapter gives us dozens of intense and fascinating scenes.

    [Source](https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/65817-the-deuce?language=en-US)
    # # Going deeper into story. # As I was saying, successfully combining themes of drugs, prostitution and porn is not easy because they are themes that if are misused usually lead to superficial, rude and empty plots that only seek to take advantage of the taboo that these themes possess, however this series manages to do so splendidly through a rhythm built through a retro atmosphere where we will see the beginnings of the porn industry at a time when prostitution and drugs were totally unleashed. The series focuses on showing us through different characters and stories the beginnings of porn from prostitution all through the particular stories of women who decided to dedicate their lives to give pleasure. It is really incredible and super entertaining to see how the series handles the whole sexual theme that constantly takes over the focus of the story using it simply as a dressing to deeper stories, stories of overcoming that are transmitted through the lives of women who loved what they did and who dedicated themselves to it even knowing all the controversy that existed behind porn and prostitution. Here we don't see the typical helpless and damaged prostitutes who want to change their lives, here we see committed women who use their sexuality to take advantage of a world of men who constantly leave them aside.

In addition to the sexual issue related to porn and prostitution, the plot of this series also stands out for constantly including social nuances related to other real problems of the society of that time, problems that were more serious but that were covered by corrupt people who only focused on hindering the path of "enterprising" women. All the atmosphere that is created from the different subplots of the characters catch us because we constantly see the different problems that arise from a world full of vices and addictions, problems that make the characters shine giving them memorable, emotional and super intense moments where they take over the screen.

    # # Exploring the Characters # When I began to see this series I immediately fell in love with the plot thanks to the characters because the characters here are deep, real and above all offer a human value that few series manage to develop. No character is used in a passing way, here the characters stand out at all times being them who make the stories interesting through situations that leave us impacted by the quality so great they offer.

The different sub-plots allow us to see the constant evolution of the characters until reaching that peak of success for which they had worked so much, to see how a prostitute becomes such a respected and powerful figure in the world of porn after having had to go through such humiliating and intense moments that put her on the verge of a psychological collapse is simply fascinating because it allows us to explore the different facets that a character can develop if given enough time to do so. No character seems accelerated each one is evolving or regressing organically to the rhythm it deserves, allowing us as spectators to form a connection with them, even the vilest characters in the series become essential elements of the plot because they give it an added value that no other element can give it.

    Source

    # # Final Thoughts # This is undoubtedly one of my favorite series of the present time, a series that recently ended its season in a wonderful way showing us extreme nuances of all this world of porn, where we could appreciate the different negative and positive contrasts that an industry so powerful has, an industry that besides generating millions of dollars is also capable of drying lives and corrupting everything it touches.

For me this series deserves awards for the way in which it manages to include different themes so complex and often grotesque in a light plot that never tires and that constantly offers us memorable scenes full of a plot climax worthy of the most dramatic and intense superhero movies. During the chapters we will become addicted to this series and its characters because we will connect with their lives, with their problems and above all with their dreams. What else can I say? This series has it all, a super entertaining plot, some intense, dramatic and funny characters and a retro staging that gives it that 80's touch where we can appreciate all the contrasts of the time in an incredible way.

Run and go see it NOW!

    My Score: 8,4/10

  4. The Deuce Season 2 Review@moon32walker2788d

    cover.jpeg

Is this series good or what!? HBO never disappoints with shows centered around crime, drama or sex. Everyone who follows this show knows that The Deuce has everything mentioned in abundance, and then some. After the rise of prostitution, porn and illegal brothels in season one, in season 2 everything seems to have grown, well everything instead of pimping.

Those guys on the street corners are having a tough time, and one of the worst ones is slowly loosing the grip on his "bitches". There is a new movement centered around helping women that are trapped inside the prostitution circles, and the pimps do not like it.

    duce.jpg

James Franco is great in this season again, he plays 2 parts in this show. Twin brothers, one a great businessman, other one a moron, what can I say he does both parts great. What this season mostly focuses on is a slow but sure corruption of almost every character, not strange considering a fuckload of money is being made and the mobsters are involved with everything.

Attention to details and the porn industry at the time is what this show does best, filming of a porn version of Red Riding Hood took a lot of time, and I must say that was one of the more interesting parts in season 2. It ends violently for some of the characters, but I will leave that part for you to discover. Score: 8.8/10.

  5. The Deuce - CinemaBun Series Suggestion@maxjoy3000d

There is an excessive amount of mediocre content in this day and age. So how do you know what movies to see? This is where we come in. We don't waste time reviewing movies we don't like. Instead we only recommend good films.

CinemaBun is the channel that brings you only good movies for you to watch.

Have you seen the movie? Did you like it? Are you going to give it a try?

As always thank you for your time.

  6. / The Deuce / History of Pornography / HBO series / review@marinauzelac3156d

The Deuce is a new series on HBO that does not lack nudity, violence and colorful scenes of sex, but we have already been used to it. The subject that deals with this new work by David Simon and George Pelecanos.
(the two who has generously given us The Wire)

Namely, the series goes into the heart of prostitution that flourish in the streets of New York in the '70s, on Times Square itself, and in the bustle of pornography. We are embroiled in a world of pimps, cheap hotels, a world where raids are just agreed routines, the world of getting prostitutes to passers-by, suspicious locals, and ultimately to sets of early pornographic films. It's difficult to determine which is dirtier - the streets or moral of characters, but one thing is certain - all cards are on the table. From prostitutes who like to spend leisure time by reading or dreaming about a film career to excellent female students who drop out of college, this series has them all.

The Deuce doesn't have time to waste and immediately deprives us of the industry and the characters it deals with. Vincent Martino (James Franco) is a family man who has to work on two jobs to feed his family, at the same time fighting his unbelieving wife and angry New York gangsters who think he is Frankie (again James Franco), Vincent's twin brother , a gambler who owes half of New York. Thanks to that attack on Vincent at the very beginning where he can distinguish Vincent and Frankie from scratching on the forehead because they both follow the latest fashion of the '70s and are decorated with thick mustaches and equally slanted hair. We will soon find out that Vincent is a talented businessman who can easily find ways to earn as much money as possible.

Eileen "Candy" Mergell (Maggie Gyllenhaal), unlike other girls, works alone, that is, she does not belong to any pimp, although they are trying hard to get her. Her little son lives with her mother, who doesn't approve the choice of her career, but just as she is stubborn with pimps, Candy is equally stubborn with her mother. Candy, however, is very well informed and familiar with other girls, their pimps and the general atmosphere in the streets, and soon she meets a new growing pornographic industry. The series offers us a few more gorgeous characters, which give us a more complete impression - the perversions of C.C. (Gary Carr) and Larry (Gbenga Akinnagbe) are both attractive and intimidating, and the girls who work for them, such as Dominique Fishback and Lily (Emily Meade), do not lag behind with their personality and individuality. There is also Abby (Margarita Levieva), a student at the NYU who only decides to give up a college one morning and hook up with Vincent.

It is precisely the integrity of characters that is one of the first things that The Deuce separates from the rest of the material currently offered to us on television. The pilot episode in its hour and a half exposes the playful characters of the Russian realistic novel and do not rush to enter the center of the action. Each major character gets his five minutes, ensuring that the viewer will not forget it. So we find out who we are dealing with and get an idea of who is moving in what direction. The authors thus create a solid foundation that will then either be upgraded or dismantled.

Because of their brutality, the characters act extremely realistically, and even James Franco doesn't overstate his acting, but rather tolerates and controls his double role. The next two episodes of characters slowly enters a large network where everyone will know each other and be able to exploit the talents they possess.

''The Deuce is richly atmospheric, whether it’s all those contrasting theater marquees (ranging from Patton to The Conformist to Mondo Trasho) to Vincent’s bustling Hi-Hat bar, site of a killer version of “96 Tears” in Episode 8. There’s also an all-hours diner suitable for gathering characters. And each hour’s blazing horns, during the closing credits, are a weekly must-hear.

The dialogue is sharp and suitably dicey, as when a pimp says in Episode 4, “I personally don’t mind a little ketchup on my hot dog.” No, he’s not talking about either food or condiments. And in the concluding episode, it’s something of a revelation to Candy and Harvey when a mobster tells them, “Lesbian sex. That’s a punch way above its weight class” in terms of audience appeal.

Simon has shown time and again that he knows how to make an audience cringe while also contemplating the impacts of his dramas’ oft-unforgiving surroundings. In that sense, The Deuce is the dirty lowdown, with much of the action below the belt. There’s nothing pretty here. But in the eyes of this beholder, you’ll otherwise know great drama when you see it.'' (1)

  7. The Deuce (Season 1) Review@liberosist3163d

I'm aware this may be an unpopular opinion, but the television industry has gone the same banal way of Hollywood this decade. Sure, there's plenty of good shows out there, but there's nothing quite exciting, nothing innovative. Stuff like Fargo and Game of Thrones, while well done, are ultimately pure formula.

Nothing like the "Golden Era of US Television" through the 2000s. The Wire, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica, Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and so many others. Not to mention some brilliant shows made outside of the US during this era.

Perhaps the only innovative show in this era is Rick and Morty, but this fall, we may have another.

The Deuce, a TV series about the prostitution industry and the rise of pornography, set in 1970s New York, with two James Francos. Of course, a lot of people dismissed that premise as something that'll inevitably turn sleazy. Of course, that's the challenge that George Pelecanos and David Simon took up.

Narrative fiction in general - whether it be books, movies/TV, or games - always ends up being a gross approximation of reality. This is a given, of course, but we have seen a trend in recent times towards what I would only call "two-dimensional". In trying to be realistic, the artifice shows even further, and ends up making a mockery of the issues it tries to deal with. Even the great shows ultimately end up being pastiches of themselves.

But The Deuce is no great show. There are no easy narrative conveniences, no formulae, no neatly pleasant packages designed to manipulate or gratify the audience.

The setting in The Deuce does not attempt to be beautiful. Neither does it attempt to be realistic. Instead, the 1970s New York is portrayed exactly as The Deuce - the show, not the actual 1970s Deuce locality - needs it to be. The costumes, the hair, the make-up, the locations - are all impeccable. To the point that the audience simply never questions or notices it.

That's why there's no other show like The Deuce on television or film. This is a show that is in such strong confidence and command of itself, that it simply does not even try and impress the audience. Stuff like Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones - great shows in their own right - constantly have a layer of artifice to them.

Not so with The Deuce, it is a show that understands the medium so well, and delicately straddles the very thin line between reality and fiction.

Continuing on my thoughts about the costumes etc, the same goes for the casting. It's all near perfect. We have seen James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaal in big budget Hollywood blockbusters, but they seem born to play Vinnie and Frankie Martino; and Miss Merrell respectively. These are the roles and performances of a career; of a lifetime. The same holds true for every minor character, down to the extras you see for not more than minute.

So, back to what The Deuce is about - sex. There's a lot of it, of course, but it's all treated in an absolutely refreshing manner. If there were aliens - or Gods - they would look down upon humans as this absurd species which is driven entirely by sex. Every bit of crime, every bit of corruption, every virtuous act, every declaration of War, has ultimately one driving force - the act of copulation. The show portrays sex as just an act, where a penis penetrates a vagina several times. Something that most humans seem to be addicted to, for some reason or another. Of course, it need not be a penis and a vagina. It could be any combination thereof, or none at all.

I found that odd, at first. Surely, the folks in the 1970s weren't as liberated, considering the general prudishness of the population in this date. In my lifetime, there has been an enormous change in understanding of sexuality and various orientations and genders, but the people in The Deuce seemed to have much of it figured out way back then. As it turns out, after some research, it really was the case. Not exactly a depiction of history, but very much in the spirit of.

But of course, it isn't really about sex. It is about America, it is about freedom, capitalism, everything good about it, and everything flawed about it that ultimately corrupts. Mind you, it is not a political show at all, but the undertones are undeniable.

This would be a good place to recommend people easily offended by sexuality in its various forms to kindly stay away.

The characters in The Deuce come from a wide swath of backgrounds. Though the focal point is clearly the rise of the pornographic industry, there are people and stories of all types. The Deuce flirts so closely with the feeling of - "wow, I can feel this must have happened" - that often times as an audience, I question - "Why is this not happening?". Lo and behold, it does. The Deuce is a wide panorama of every nook and cranny of the human condition in this context, which somehow seems impossible to achieve in a mere 8 hours.

People do bad things, people do good things, but no one is judged upon. The best shows do have characters with shades of grey, but they often burdened with sanctimonious back-stories and justifications. Not in The Deuce. Every single character are just people, getting by.

A common wisdom goes like so - you make your characters likeable, or no one will like your work of fiction. Of course, this is The Deuce, and there's absolutely no attempt to make anyone likeable. People are complicated, and depending on who you are, you'll warm to like someone or the other - but rarely would it be the same person. That makes it all the more fun to discuss - as everyone has a different view of a different character.

And so it is, at every turn, there's utmost respect for the audience. The audience must pay attention and engage with the show, and by doing so it becomes an utterly spellbinding 8 hours of entertainment.

This is without doubt the finest Season 1 in television in this decade, and may even be one of the finest in television history. The porn industry is just getting started, and so is The Deuce. If it keeps firing at this rate in subsequent seasons, this might just end up being one of the finest pieces of fiction humankind has produced. Hyperbole, of course, and have rambled on for quite a while, but I don't care. I just had to write about it.

  8. 🎬Watching novelties: The Deuce and Ghosted@weeklystats3200d

    The Deuce

Plot: In the center of the plot is Frankie Martino. He works in a bar in Manhattan, his wife constantly cheats him, and his twin brother threw in debts. The city was swept by a wave of sex industry, drugs and rock and roll. Cast: James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Carr, Margarita Levieva, Lawrence Gilliard Jr.

My opinion: If you are interested to watch the 70-80's in the USA and like the Vinyl series, then The Deuce is unequivocally for you. I was not interested in the plot, but I can not help but note that the series is devilishly cool. First, you get confused in a lot of the main characters. And it's okay they would simply pass by, but all are well spelled out characters, you watch them as if you watch a documentary movie. I was surprised by the thoughtfulness of details, spectacular sex scenes and there are a lot of sex in The Deuce. The play of Maggie Gyllenhaal is perfect. She is a great prostitute. And Franco coped with the role of twins. His characters are similar because they are brothers, but they have different characters. You watch their conversations, skirmishes without stopping. Franco generally revealed to me as a good actor, recently. As I said, the plot is not exactly for me, I'm bored. But I hope you enjoy The Deuce.

    Trailer

    Ghosted

Plot: The secret research bureau asks the former detective, and now the guard, Leroy Wright and the former astrophysicist, and now the seller of books, Max Jennifer, to find the missing office employee. In the process of searching, they face paranormal phenomena. Cast: Craig Robinson, Adam Scott, Ally Walker, Amber Stevens West.

My opinion: As you understand from the description, Ghosted is a comedy. On the first series, it is difficult to say something, but I almost did not laugh. Let's see what will happen next. The most important plus - the episode duration is 20 minutes. Ghosted is just a waste of time, you can turn on the background, watch a couple of minutes of the entire duration of the series and you will not lose anything. I would have characterized Ghosted like that. I hope to change my mind, but something suggests that I won't be given such a chance).
