Hello everyone! Today I will be sharing this article as part of my entry and participation in the Cine TV and LOLZ community collaborative contest, under the Best Comedy Movie theme. So without further ado let's get started with it!

I'll start by saying that although I don't clearly remember some comedy movies that have had a significant impact on me, there is one of them that made me die laughing in several or in the entirety of the movie, it's The Disaster Artist. A comedy-drama film directed by James Franco and starring himself as the sterile, multi-faceted and eccentric Tommy Wiseau. The film is based on the novel by Greg Sestero who tells the story of how one of the worst movies of all time, The Room, was made by Tommy Wiseau. It is therefore based on real events and I assure you that the premise of the film does not do justice to what you will see on screen for about 105 minutes of film.

To put us in context, Greg Sestero, who wrote the novel, is none other than Tommy Wiseau's best friend and in the movie, he is played by James Franco's brother. A memorable duo. Sestero wrote this novel to document how he met Tommy and the nightmare that was filming The Room. In the film, The Disaster Artist shows us Greg, a young theater actor who dreams of making it in the big leagues of Los Angeles. But Greg is a bit insecure and doesn't seem to be very happy with his acting performance. So in a theater class he freezes up when he doesn't know what to do during the performance of a role. It's not until a tall man with long black hair and strange clothes emerges from the theater seats and walks onto the stage to improvise as Marlon Brandon (in one of his most spectacular performances, "A Streetcar Named Desire") and begins to exclaim the famous lines "Stella!" It's Tommy Wiseau himself! The class is stunned at such a sultry spectacle but Greg can only feel great admiration for the man.

They soon strike up a close friendship where they pledge their loyalty and support to each other so that they can both achieve their dreams. The issue is that Greg and Tommy have big differences. Tommy is a very reserved man, he doesn't talk about his past and makes it clear many times. While Greg is simple, jovial, a little gullible but good. What makes this union special is that they both have something in common; their love for movies and that they are lousy actors. Really, really lousy. And this they will let us know in several unforgettable scenes.

What makes the film comical is Tommy himself. The fact that Tommy claims to be from New Orleans and that he has a thick European accent, has no congruence. He tries to hide his origin. He is childish and nonsensical, innocent, histrionic and unpredictable. Everything about him is a wow factor. The thousands of witticisms are what makes everything about the film funny. But despite that, he firmly believes in his dreams, even though the man doesn't seem to know a damn thing about acting and various things like social relationships. So, having made the decision to travel with Greg to Los Angeles and live together in his apartment in order to have job opportunities, a lot of situations start to happen.

As they are unsuccessful in their acting jobs, Tommy feels it is the ruin of his career. Greg tries to cheer him up and jokingly suggests that he make his own movie. Tommy takes him seriously and it is here that the odyssey to make The Room, a film that Tommy assures will be a world reference in terms of high quality cinema, finally begins.

The Room has a simple plot of drama and romance; Johny is a successful businessman who is betrayed by his wife Lisa and little by little falls into madness until he finally commits suicide. So far so good but out of nowhere Tommy includes a lot of scenes and characters without context, which have no relation to the timeline of the story in question. An example of this is the final scene where Johny shoots himself and falls and then gets up and shoots himself again. In addition, Tommy is bent on being the director, cameraman, screenwriter, lead actor and other roles within the direction of the film. A lot of problems arise due to Tommy's own disarray but, finally, the film is finished.

The movie is a total failure at the box office and although Tommy had a very serious approach (the movie is supposed to be a drama), the viewers take it with a lot of humor when they see the crazy and incomprehensible scenes. But rest assured, Tommy did have a happy ending because The Room quickly became a cult movie and every year it is shown in theaters to a large and loyal following. Tommy didn't hit the big time in the way I had hoped but it found it.

I guess at this point I should say that it would be good to see The Room first in order to understand scenes from The Disaster Artist and also Tommy. Even though Tommy had many obstacles against him he never lost the will to do what he wanted. Despite the mockery and a thousand laughs the man can bring out of us, he has great mettle and merit in doing something few do, fulfill his dreams. Tommy is a misunderstood, sensitive, a dreamer but for whom even one can feel a real admiration and respect. So for me this is one of the best dramatic comedy films (even reminiscent of Ed Wood) where behind the laughs we see a man who evolves and realizes himself. So far this article my friends, I do not leave without recommending you to see it and make your own observations. It has been a pleasure. See you next time!

    The Disaster Artist plus points:

-James Franco's excellent performance as Tommy Wiseau.

    -Tommy's unovildable laugh.

-Let's face it, it's impossible not to love Tommy Wiseau, simply the guy is brilliant and a sweetheart with all the merits.

Puntos a favor The Disaster Artist:

The Disaster artist is a 2017 film written, directed, produced and starring James Franco. The extra cinematic events linked to the latter have limited its echo and reduced its chances of winning the 2018 Oscars, events that saw Franco accused (as far as we know unfairly) of harassment and that decreed the end of dreams of glory. Dreams that were shattered on this news shortly before the Oscar nominations with the academy that decided to forget this film despite being given for certain its presence in the main categories except nominating it for the best non-original screenplay. Suffice it to say that just a few weeks earlier Franco had won the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes and if you saw the film you know that the credit for that award was full, crystal clear. The Italian-American actor, today on TV with The Deuce, plays Tom Wiseau, an eccentric and mysterious figure to which is linked one of the most absurd legends of Hollywood. Tom Wiseau is a man whose history is unknown and still unknown. A weird subject with a fixation on cinema and its history and on American culture who, coming out of nowhere, had ambitions to become a Hollywood actor. In the late '90s he moved to Los Angeles where he participated in numerous auditions in order to become a celebrity. The problem is that Tom is a terrible actor, one of those who couldn't even act in a comedy at school. He has no technique, expressiveness, chemistry or preparation and everyone continually rejects him. Tom meets Greg Sestero, played by Dave Franco (James' brother), and from that comes a friendship that will lead the two of them to have a crazy idea of becoming celebrities thanks to themselves. How? By producing their own film. Yes, because Tom is loaded with money and he earmarks $5 million for the production of this film. He's gonna write the script, take care of every detail, hire top-notch people and buy a studio. There's only one problem. Tom doesn't know anything about screenwriting, editing, directing and the inevitable result is that the film is crap. A film so unwatchable that it's called one of the ugliest films in history, if not the worst. At the end of shooting, over 6 million euros will be spent on this film. A terrible film, with absurdities everywhere, bad acting, awful screenplay and all the worst things a film product has to offer. Tom was so far into the part that it is said that he now had a mania for omnipotence, subjecting actors and collaborators to exhausting schedules and situations to satisfy his own confused and absurd vision of what the film should have been like. The film even had its premiere. A film that was supposed to be dramatic became spotty. The audience in the theater, at first disgusted and upset, laughed their eyes out for the duration and Tom Wiseau became a celebrity, an idol. A counterculture in the counterculture, a film so bad that it became cult. Today it has, in fact, become just that: a cult. It's a story that to define incredible is little because there are other incredible stories, the result of effort, passion and sacrifice. This is a meaningless story, beyond imagination. A crazy, rich and unknown guy makes a movie, he even founds his own house and makes an unwatchable movie. People, attracted by ugliness as much as by beauty, end up making it great. The rest is history. James Franco, that talented chameleon, wanted to tell us the stages from the birth of the idea to its realization until the end of shooting. A story that demands little if not to make the world aware of one of the most comic and surreal stories of American cinema. And it succeeds brilliantly.

Come?

    Artist2.jpg IMG

  6. The Disaster Artist (film): extremely good biographical film@gooddream2870d

So a few days ago I reviewed The Room, which is largely viewed as one of the worst films ever made. The Room holds such a special place in people's hearts that the cult following has grown over the years and I was surprised to find out some really interesting things about the making of The Room because of this really wonderfully done documentary of sorts.

    91sGCJkwtuL.RI.jpg

The movie is presented in a way that really shows how independently wealthy Tommy Wiseau (played by James Franco) and Greg Sestero (played by Dave Franco) became friends at a actor training class and kind of hit it off so to speak. They end up being roommates in L.A. and try to make it as actors. It shouldn't be surprising that this is an exceptionally difficult dream to pull off and neither one of them experience any real level of success.

After being shamed in public by a Hollywood bigwig Tommy is brooding when Greg gives him the idea to just make his own movie. Now I don't know if this is actually true but it certainly would be a defining moment in Tommy's life. If he hadn't decided to make his own movie there is an absolutely wonderful chance that no one would ever know who he is.

james-franco-as-tommy-wiseau2.jpg they did a really good job making Franco look like Tommy

I had previously said that watching this movie without seeing The Room first would make it very difficult to understand what is going on. I want to withdraw that comment. After watching I realize that the film is made very well and actually stands on its own, it is not necessary to have seen The Room (although i still highly recommend that you do.)

As The Disaster Artist progresses, you can't help but feel bad for Tommy as he seems like he is a genuinely good guy who just isn't willing to accept the fact that he doesn't have any real acting ability or know a great deal about the film industry. The people he hires have no choice but to listen to him as he is the sole financier of the movie, but the rest of the cast and crew start to lose their patience with him over time as the filming goes way over schedule entirely because of Tommy's actions such as turning up late or insisting on certain scenes be a special way in his bizarre vision.

21-disaster-artist-oral-history-feature.nocrop.w1600.h2147483647.jpg such as this scene where Tommy laughs about a story Greg is telling him about domestic abuse and insists that it is part of the film

Overall, i would say that this movie is actually one of the better movies I have seen in a while and I believe that since it is based on a book by a guy that was actually there for all of the actions the movie depicts, we can believe that it is not a work of fiction.

I was happy to learn at the end of the movie that The Room, despite making $1800 initially against a budget of $6 million, has made its money back over time and routinely sells out midnight showings at theaters around the world.

  7. The Disaster artist [Recensione film]@noemilunastorta2884d

  8. Some thoughts about "The Disaster Artist"@godflesh3029d

"The Disaster Artist" has three sources: The Love Tragedy "The Room" (2003), Greg Sistero's autobiographical book, one of the central roles in it, and an excellent article in Entertainment Weekly, which describes how improbably film has become a permanent object of viewing cult. Author and protagonist in the Room, a miracle of lacklusterity, fed with the slop of the TV melodrama and mistaken at every level from a storyline to a soundtrack, is someone named Tommy Wiseau. "Someone," because his name is certainly invented and, apart from being disastrously unarmed, almost nothing else is known to him. Enigmatic type of vague origin at the age of 40 at the time of the narrative events, with a broken English and a rough German-speaking accent, with long black hair, laughing and rotating robot movements, dark glasses, lightly dirty clothes and a completely vague past, , opinions, environments - Wiseau, who dreams of being an actor, but he does not find expression, collects a team and makes himself a film to play by producing it with an incomprehensible six million dollars. The premiere of "The Room" forces spectators who have not left the gym in a hysterical laugh (and to remind: we are talking about a tragedy ending with death), something is crawling and people start to share with each other, watch the second, fifth and eighth time, invent their rituals, recite the lines with the characters, turn the screenings into small noisy feasts ... and here, 15 years later, "The Room" continues to be programmed once a month at certain theaters in the States and collecting old and new fans like "Rockie Horror Show".

    the-disaster-artist-posters.jpg

I watched Rocky Horror a long time ago at the Munich Lichtspill Museum in Munich, where she screened it every week on June 24, 1977. This is far from being the only place in the world with this tradition, but it is one of the oldest and the viewing in the gym is fundamentally different from the one on the Internet: real fans come in disguise, throw things, sing and scream with the actors, and when the youngster Susan Sarandon is running away from the foolhardy owner of the castle where she is home (a mad scientist with "low morale and high persuasiveness", who is a seductive transvestite with mesh socks and an alien from the Transylvania galaxy) around the rows in cinema solidly at least one or two girls goes away. The film is a madhouse, the experience is a madhouse, but the childish joy of the whole saves him from sour sober judgments. I assume that the merry screenings of the Room attract such reasons (because there is nothing in the world that justifies the appearance of the entire "movie" in private with the computer screen) and since I know that unlike Rocky Hurray there is neither eccentricity, neither talent nor content, I also admit that the special ingredient in chemistry between the public and the author is the perfect impossibility of putting Tommy Wiseau into any coordinate system. "The room" provokes mockery, but also sympathy and sharp curiosity, and that is what keeps it in the poster. Obviously, James Franco was attracted to the mystery to wish to walk through Tommy Wiseau's footsteps with his rhythm. However, "The Disaster artist" - infinitely more professional and more secure than "The Room", of course - simply plays everything familiar rather than unraveling the rest. It is a great magnifying glass that goes down over curious life fact and does not analyze, does not color, does not mix like a kaleidoscope but only increases the facts.

    9179842-3x2-940x627.jpg

In 2013, Kanye West made a new video, Bound 2, which was such a peak of bad taste that it was always screaming to be ridiculed. The parodies were not late and one of them was James Franco and his indivisible friend, Seth Rogen: it was called Bound 3, and a frame shot copied the original - gestures, choreography, atmosphere. Franco copied the angry manner of Canyon, and Rogen, with bare hair, shoulders and fluffy frowning flesh - the sexy postures and smiles of Kim Kardashian. The replacement of the woman with a man and the black rapper with an actor played by James Dean was the only deviation, but it was the necessary step from the unconscious to the sought-after mockery. And Bound 3 gets terribly ridiculous. "The Disaster Artist" is lacking any interference, the incomplete picture of reality is given one to one. There is no shifting and step forward, there is no replenishment of the story, no creative participation. At one point in the The Disaster Artist, the assistant director (Seth Rogen, of course) asks Tommy Wiseau (James Franco): well, the decor here reproduces the alley in front ... why do not we shoot straight in the alley? "Because it's a true Hollywood cinema!" Answers Tommy. The "The Disaster artist" reproduces exactly the part of "The Room" and the few known events before, during and after the filming. And Franco is Tommy's remarkably accurate imitator ... Still: is this the actor mastery for which he rewards? The difference between Elvis Presley's impersonator and Elvis Presley's actor is probably the fact that the first one repeats it, the second interprets it. From the first he is expected to be like Elvis through a swing of the pelvis and a gelosan perch, from the second - to be Elvis by exploring and understanding.

"The Room" is fun, there is no controversy. I am sure, however, that at least half of the gynec records can also make more cussing situations for filming: the story of the woman most able to wear her eyes, that of the man with the longest nails on the left hand, -the high-rise lamas. In any case, however, the value of possible stories will not come from makeup and special effects of eyes, nails, and jumps, but from placing them in context, from burial in their motivation, from processes behind the facts. "The Disaster Artist" is a filthy film about the interesting fate of a bad movie, without which the "The Disaster Artist" is not so interesting. The problem is that once a person passes through the two films, articles, and interviews (because curiosity stays hungry), the feeling is finally too much of a waste of time.

(The Disaster Artist, 2017)@panza3032d

    Artist.jpg IMG

  10. 'The Disaster Artist' Review@namiks3036d

    The Disaster Artist.jpg

Based on the 2013 non-fiction book of the same name, The Disaster Artist is a visual retelling of the cult-flop film The Room, released by two ambitious filmmakers in 2003.

The film shows the two filmmakers in their earliest days; Greg Sestero as a young adult attempting to break into the world of acting, but failing due to his constantly nervous state when put on the spot, despite being relatively decent at acting. And the infamous Tommy Wiseau, who is ambitious but downright terrible at acting.

We see how their friendship grew, and how Wiseau managed to influence Sestero to continue perusing his dreams in Los Angeles, but became awfully strange and jealous of any successes Sestero was managing to obtain without him, whether it be relationships or a spark towards an acting career.

While the film often displays Wiseau's lack of talent as comedy, it's particularly difficult for that comedy to connect given the additional backstory we see into Wiseau's incredibly uncomfortable levels of secretiveness regarding his age, and origin of birth. We see his manipulative ways take control of another person's potential to succeed as a result of his own selfishness and failures.

That said, there are elements that are rather enjoyable, detailing the sheer stresses of working alongside Wiseau for the shooting of The Room, and how both he and others acted on set; seeing how heated things could get, it's a surprise that the film was successfully made in the first place. These moments are often displayed as comedy, being self-aware of the complete ridiculousness of particular events, such as building an entire set of an alleyway instead of just filming in an alleyway.

The Disaster Artist tries to end itself with this ambitious belief that The Room was a success; and how even though it was laughed at and hated, the fact that the two followed through with their dreams and made a film should be celebrated. It's hard to follow that after seeing just how awful of a person Wiseau was to the crew, and how he was a result of many lost opportunities for many during the production.

Narrative issues aside, the performances are excellent, incredibly well done and believable; James Franco's performance alone shows hours upon hours of research and refining the uncanny nature of Wiseau to the point where it's close to identical in comparison. The accuracy alone makes The Disaster Artist a fun viewing experience.

  11. 'The Disaster Artist' (2017)@showflix3096d

I believe that to produce a good work needs 3 elements: resources, passion , and talent. Like the Fire Triangle, it will not work when there is one less element. The Room movie written, directed, and starring Tommy Wiseau is what happens when he has no last element. I'm not exaggerating, because the fact is. The Room was named one of the worst films of all time. So, until now the movie is still regularly held by the fans, often attended directly by Wiseau.

Problem of "worst" predicate, a movie would not be a legend if just bad. There is such a bad movie as a migraine angler and there are also movies that are so bad to watch it so entertaining. I'm sure people keep talking about it even after 15 years, not because of Wiseau's incompetence but because of how his attitude is so passionate about the movie. Wiseau believes that he made the best film. The energy is contagious.

Quite a matter of The Room ; this is a review of The Disaster Artist . The Disaster Artist is a comedic approach that tells about how The Room can exist. The movie runs in a thin line between mockery and appreciation. How else try to make a movie about it if not through comedy. Even a serious movie would be funny when we see the behind-the-scenes chaos that occurred during the filming of The Room and the absurdity of Wiseau's personality.

While performing to demonstrate his acting skills in front of a theater class, Tommy ( James Franco ) enthusiastically shouted "STELLA! STELLA! AAKK!" as if possessed. No normal human being considers this a real acting. But Greg Sestero ( Dave Franco , his brother James) was poisoned by Tommy's spirits, for he himself did not have that kind of trust. Even in the restaurant, Tommy was not shy about challenging Greg to bring a loud drama dialogue as if he were the orator of the demo.

Sharing the same dream to become a Hollywood star like James Dean, both set off for the city of Los Angeles. Capitalized handsome face, Greg managed to get an agent though not so with work. Plus, Greg can name his girlfriend Amber ( Alison Brie ). Another story with Tommy who fared badly. He was rebuffed when approached a producer.

If Hollywood is not ready to accept us, how about if we make the film itself? That's about Greg's suggestion. Well, what's interesting is that Tommy has resources. The money is so plentiful that he wants to buy a camera instead of hiring it as most directors do, building their own sets instead of using real-world properties, and recruiting anyone who wants to join his project, a script we later recognize as "The Room" which Tommy claims to be Tenessee Williams's most powerful drama.

Tommy is a mysterious figure and the film is not trying to solve it. At the end of the movie, we still will not know where the source of his wealth is, where his hometown (Tommy tells New Orleans but his accent suggests that he may have come from drakula castle), or how old he is (he claims to be 20 years old but his face does not say that). The film, written by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber directly from memoir Greg Sestero , still treats it as an enigma, as most fans see the original Wiseau.

The film takes a simple approach, focusing more on the events behind The Room's production. The more insight-focused part of Wiseau is simplified by the conflict of how Greg keeps supporting Tommy when he realizes that Tommy obviously does not know what he's doing or how Tommy always nged when Greg brought his girlfriend around. No one understands Tommy, not even Greg. Dave Franco looks good as a friend who tries to understanding.

The film is directed by James Franco, but obviously he is more stable as an actor than as a director here. With long hair and make-up help, Franco really looks and sounds like Wiseau, including his odd accent and his strange laugh. We can feel how hard Franco studied his original character. But he did not just make fun of it, but also catch his spirit and vulnerability. Front plate and Tommy's gaze was pitying.

The Room's production process turned out to be a mess and this is where The Disaster Artist is really funny. The madness at the shooting location is of course sourced from Tommy, while the crew, among whom Seth Rogen, Jacki Weaver, Josh Hutcherson, Zac Efron , et al, are aware from the outset that the situation will get worse. Franco re-created and provided background not many people know about some of the key scenes from The Room (yes, for example, why Tommy holds a mineral water bottle fit the "Oh, hi Mark" scene). To showcase how detailed the results of his work, at the end of the film Franco insert repeated iconic scenes that are placed adjacent to the original scene.

I think The Disaster Artist owes much to The Room and Wiseau. This movie will not be funny if the source is no more funny. Watching The Room will make you appreciate The Disaster Artist , and vice versa. But I can not say that this movie is a tribute to Wiseau and The Room . The film closes with the ending that positions the creator and his creation as an object that makes the audience burst out laughing. What are they laughing at? The absurdity of the movie or the silliness of someone so passionate of creating something without talent?

Everyone hyped up this movie so much. It was an OK movie. If you don't know it is supposed to follow the making of the best worst movie, the Room. I think I would rather watch the original Room movie than this. That insane train wreck would be better to watch than this bland movie.

The trailers for The Disaster Artist did not appeal to me. I ran into a friend at our screening of Water Wheel and he couldn't say enough good things about the movie. He explained that the film was about the making of a movie called The Room, which has been called "the worst movie of all time." Based on his recommendation, my wife and I went to see The Disaster Artist two nights ago. The bright spot? We have moviepass, so it didn't actually cost us anything to see this film.

The Room is a 2003 film that was produced, financed, written, directed and starring Tommy Wiseau. Tommy is a bit of an enigma. His claim to be from New Orleans is betrayed by his thick eastern European accent. He sees himself as a leading man, but his appearance and dress lends themselves more to a sinister role. No one knows his age, but he definitely is not the same age as his friend and co-star, Greg Sestero. The pair met in acting class and decide to train together. When neither of them have any success landing a role in Hollywood, Tommy decides that he is going to create his own film. Rather than renting equipment, he buys everything, shoots in dual formats and hires a complete staff to work on the film. Tommy does not take any advice from the pros. He makes the film he wants to make, rents a theater for two weeks and does a full premiere. The film is horrible, but it becomes a cult classic. There is no way a film this bad should ever recoup the 6 million (estimated) it cost to create the film. But it manages to eke out the money from a cult following. It is set to be re-released in 2018, too.

    image.png

The Disaster Artist tells the backstory of The Room. James Franco takes the role of the enigmatic Tommy while his brother Dave Franco plays Greg. The film follows the story from the day the pair meet to the premiere of the film. The story is mostly a character study where Greg is probably considered the lead character. Even though the film is essentially about Tommy. It was an interesting way to present the story, but I think it allows for a more introspective study of the Tommy, who appears to have used the film to tell his own story. Tommy is a bit tormented. But he is also very true to his own vision. To a fault. His worldview does not have a foundation in reality. The film ends with the final screening and audience reactions, as well as some facts about The Room. The credits are cut with dual scenes that were reproduced from the original film. That may have been the best part of the film.

    image.png

I am being a bit harsh on this film. It did have redeeming qualities. Franco delivered a flawless performance. He really nailed his part. It was just tedious for me to watch at times. It is more the subject matter than the delivery. A film about the making of the worst film ever could have been worse. But Tommy is so bizarre that the role tested my patience at times. If he weren't a real person, I would say the character was overdone. But having seen some interview footage of Tommy, I don't think it was. The acting was good, the cinematography was good, as a biography, it appeared to be pretty accurate. From a cinematic perspective, the film was everything it should be. It was just the story itself that didn't really capture my attention.

    image.png

The Disaster Artist is a one hour, 44 minute film that received an R rating from the MPAA. The rating is based on language, sexuality and nudity. The nudity is James Franco, who does a fully nude scene, with just his genitals covered with a sock-like device. I believe this was true to the real film. Tommy thought the audience needed to see his buttocks to sell the film. The reaction of the audience during the final screening was possibly the highlight of the film. This is not a film for kids, and probably not for a lot of adults. It's not my cup of tea, even though IMDb currently has the film at 8.1.

    image.png

As a film buff, The Disaster Artist is a film I should like. It is a film about the process. It is a biography about the making of an infamous film. But I just didn't see the appeal of this film. While it superior from many technical aspects, particularly the acting, the story itself was just average for me. I didn't hate the film. I just would never have paid to see it in the theater. Even with my free moviepass, I did not intend to see this film in the theater. Based on IMDb, there are a lot of people raving about this film. You may think I'm crazy for giving it a significantly lower rating. But I can only muster a mild recommendation. This is more for hard core movie fans, I think. 6/10.

  14. The Disaster Artist--Movie Review--An ode to the clueless dreamers.@mctiller3119d

James Franco’s The Disaster Artist is like watching a slow inevitable crash.

And you can’t wait for it to crash.

    Source

Tommy Wiseu is a middle-age man after nearly being killed in a car crash decides to focus on the thing that brings him the most joy in life—acting.

Unfortunately he is a terrible actor.

Greg Sistero is a 19 year old model who wants to be an actor, but doesn’t have the courage to actually emote when standing in front of an audience.

One day during an acting lesson Greg is rightfully chastised for his performance of a scene from Waiting for Godot.  The instructor, played Melanie Griffin, asks Greg if he even wants to be an actor.  “Because it sure doesn’t look like it,” she scolds him in front of the class.  After he sits down the instructor asks if there is anyone else who has brought a scene to share.

Tommy Wiseu calls out from the back of the class, saying he has brought one.  He walks slowly and deliberately to the stage.  He brings an unprepared female classmate to the stage with him.  James Franco keeps Tommy’s face hidden as he readies for the scene.  He reveals his face by yelling “Stella!”

For the next minute, Tommy, thinks he is doing A Street Car Names Desire, is really just screaming “Stella!” as he throws chairs, props and climbs the scaffolding by the stage.  He ends the scene on the floor as if he has had a heart attack.

Greg is so taken aback by Tommy’s boldness, he asks Tommy to do a scene with him in a future.

“You wannda a scene with me?” Tommy asks in his clearly Eastern European accent.

    “Yes,” Greg replies.

“Okay.” Tommy replies and walks off to his car.

The next day Tommy unexpectedly drives by Sistreos house.  Wiseu takes Sistreo to a restuarant for lunch.  In the car, we learn something very important about Tommy.

    “Never ask anything about me.”

Greg is not allowed to know anything about Tommy, unless Tommy tells it to him.

This is the basis for the entire friendship.

Where Wiseu asks him why he wants to do a scene with him.  Greg tells him he wants to have the fearless he showed in class.  To show Greg how to do it, he makes him perform a scene at the top of his lungs right there in the restaurant.  After getting finishing the scene Greg is elated and feels more alive than ever before.

Tommy and Greg’s strange friendship grows.  Tommy reveals that he owns an apartment in LA, and he invites Greg to move to LA with him.

They move to LA, and Greg slowly gets an agent and more work.  While Tommy invariably continues to struggle and not find work.

One day, deep in depression, Greg finds Tommy standing at the top of their apartment complex.  While complaining about the difficulty of trying to make a career in LA, Greg off handedly says, “If only we could make our own movie.”

And the light bulb goes off for Tommy.  Mysteriously he can afford to make his own movie. And this is before the days of Youtube.  He becomes the ultimate in choosing yourself.

So that’s what he sets out to do.  He types, yes, types on an actual typewriter an incoherent script.

Tommy asks Greg to read the script, and in spite of his clear dislike of the script, he tells Tommy that it’s great.

    source

Tommy uses his never explained inexhaustible supply of money to buy a camera rental store for the cameras, to shot the movie on both 35mm and HD digital.  Clearly unfamiliar with how a movie is made Tommy plows ahead.

    source

The production surprisingly begins well.  But as time marches along, Tommy becomes more and more erratic.  Sensitive to the supposedly hidden criticisms about him and the movie.  Fights begin on the set, crew are fired and replaced.

Greg and Tommy’s friendship ends as the movie reaches it’s production.  After several months, Tommy reaches out to Greg to come to the premiere of the movie.  Again, using his money, Tommy buys out a movie theater for the premiere.

The movie is not received in the way Tommy thought it would be or the way he wanted it to be.  As the audience begins to realize how terrible the film is, they begin to cheer it on in its ineptitude.  Distraught Tommy leaves the theater.  Greg comforts him.  Reminding him that he made an actual movie.  Something that few people have actually done.  And though it may not be how he thought it would be received, the audience is clearly enjoying themselves.

    Final Thoughts

James Franco directed the movie in character as Tommy Wiseu.  Not sure what that was like for everyone else.

The movie praises the idea of following your dream, but cautions us to be aware that the result of the dream may not be what we thought it would be.  This is an ode to all the clueless dreamers.

I would recommend the movie, especially if you are fans of James Franco’s and Seth Rogen’s other movies.

The movie is rated R for nudity, and language.

Stay for the end scene after the credits, for me it's more enjoyable than any end scene done by Marvel.
