I tend to go against the grain of the opinions of many of the professional critics, so I waited to see this series to have my own verdict because after an episode of the series was screened at the last Cannes Film Festival, the reviews were terrible.
I am not going to qualify the series as bad, detailing the production as a whole, it has positive aspects, but I am going to define it as a failed series. Something that could have been really transgressive, falls halfway. It is a rocket that does not end up taking off that from my point of view has a big culprit.
I was optimistic when I saw the first promotional images, it had already started that broadcast stage, when it abruptly suffered a delay in its premiere date. This was a red flag. Filmmaker Amy Seimetz, who was originally directing the entire series, dropped out of the project. Then, one of the creators, Sam Levinson, ordered scenes to be reshot because Seimetz's approach was supposedly not the right one.
Levinson is already known for being the creator of Euphoria. I like that other series, which has also been controversial for its sexual content, although in Euphoria that does not bother me, on the contrary, all that content that scandalizes the most puritanical, I see it justified there. Although the problems with part of the cast and creative team have always been present in that set, precisely because of the vision of the writer and director.
There are many articles circulating on the Internet about Sam Levinson's controversies, his conflict with Barbie Ferreira in the series Euphoria being one of them. There are also reports that the director is not so intransigent and that if any actress or actor tells him that a certain nude scene is not appropriate, he has no problem to accept it and change the scene. What is true and what is a lie? That's only known by the crew, the actors and everyone involved, unfortunately I don't work there. Now, what is true is that Levinson has used sex to shock, it has worked for him with his previous productions, but in The Idol it seems he went too far and it hasn't worked out as he had hoped.
Many will point to him as the culprit of the failure, he is the showrunner and director, but for me the big culprit is the other creator of the series, who apparently was the one who had the most problems with Amy Seimetz and also reserves the role of the male protagonist... the millionaire and very famous singer Abel Tesfaye, better known internationally as The Weeknd.

No voy a calificar la serie de mala, detallando la producción en su conjunto, tiene aspectos positivos, pero sí voy a definirla como una serie fallida. Algo que podría haber sido realmente transgresor, se queda a medio camino. Es un cohete que no termina de despegar que desde mi punto de vista tiene un gran culpable.
Era optimista cuando vi las primeras imágenes promocionales, ya había comenzado esa etapa de difusión, cuando abruptamente sufrió un retraso en su fecha de estreno. Esto fue una señal de alarma. La cineasta Amy Seimetz, que originalmente dirigía toda la serie, abandonó el proyecto. Entonces, uno de los creadores, Sam Levinson, ordenó volver a rodar escenas porque supuestamente el enfoque de Seimetz no era el adecuado.
Levinson ya es conocido por ser el creador de Euphoria. Me gusta esa otra serie, que también ha sido polémica por su contenido sexual, aunque en Euphoria eso no me molesta, al contrario, todo ese contenido que escandaliza a los más puritanos, lo veo justificado alli. Aunque los problemas con parte del reparto y equipo creativo siempre han estado presentes en ese conjunto, precisamente por la visión del guionista y director.
En Internet circulan muchos artículos sobre las polémicas de Sam Levinson, siendo su conflicto con Barbie Ferreira en la serie Euphoria uno de ellos. También hay informaciones que afirman que el director no es tan intransigente y que si alguna actriz o actor le dice que una determinada escena de desnudo no es apropiada, no tiene ningún problema en aceptarlo y cambiar la escena. ¿Qué es verdad y qué es mentira? An overly high ego makes many people not realize their limitations (I should do a post about that). Fame, money, power within a certain industry, make stars like Tesfaye, believe that they are excellent in everything they do, when the reality is different. I can't give an opinion about his music, since I haven't listened to it much, but his success, fans and awards won, show that he does have a great talent for it. Having the money and also being the creator of the series, he has insisted on being an actor, but there are people who do not get to develop that talent.
Tesfaye is the ballast of this story. In every scene he appears in, his acting is a disaster. What's worse is that he seems to think he's making an impact with his character, when in reality what he's doing is making us not want to see him anymore. I even laughed at how he says his empty dialogue. Of course there will be no shortage of defenders of his work, many of his diehard fans because of his music, must see him as that idol that gives the series its title, a musical messiah like the one he plays.
Show business has always been linked to scandals, alcohol, hard drugs, sex, etc. and the American music industry is a pioneer in all of this. The story tries to be a chronicle of the moral depravity within that world, of how they devour their own idols, taking them to the top or sinking them into the abyss. Unfortunately, everything is set up with the typical clichés, with scenes seen many times in other productions, diverting all the attention in a toxic romance, where the sotf porn scenes try to be scandalous, but they don't succeed, at least in my case. I'm not a puritan and I don't mind scenes with erotic content, but in this case, I find them excessive and unnecessary, I wanted to see the behind the scenes of the music industry, something that HBO knew how to do very well in the only season of the series Vinyl.
Un ego demasiado elevado hace que muchas personas no se den cuenta de sus limitaciones (debeo hacer un post sobre eso). La fama, el dinero, el poder dentro de una determinada industria, hacen que estrellas como Tesfaye, crean que son excelentes en todo lo que hacen, cuando la realidad es otra. No puedo opinar sobre su música, ya que no la he escuchado mucho, pero su éxito, fans y premios ganados, demuestran que sí tiene un gran talento para ello. Teniendo el dinero y siendo además el creador de la serie, se ha empeñado en ser actor, pero hay gente que no llega a desarrollar ese talento.
Tesfaye es el lastre de esta historia. En cada escena en la que aparece, su actuación es un desastre. Lo peor es que parece creer que está impactando con su personaje, cuando en realidad lo que está haciendo es que no queramos verlo más. Hasta me he reído de cómo dice sus diálogos vacíos. Por supuesto no faltarán defensores de su trabajo, muchos de sus fans acérrimos por su música, deben verlo como ese ídolo que da título a la serie, un mesías musical como el que interpreta.
El mundo del espectáculo siempre ha estado ligado a escándalos, alcohol, drogas duras, sexo, etc. y la industria musical estadounidense es pionera en todo ello. La historia intenta ser una crónica de la depravación moral dentro de ese mundo, de cómo devoran a sus propios ídolos, llevándolos a lo más alto o hundiéndolos en el abismo. Por desgracia, todo está planteado con los típicos clichés, con escenas vistas muchas veces en otras producciones, desviando toda la atención en un romance tóxico, donde las escenas sotf porn intentan ser escandalosas, pero no lo consiguen, al menos en mi caso. No soy puritano y no me molestan las escenas de contenido erótico, pero en este caso, me parecen excesivas e innecesarias, yo quería ver los entretelones de la industria musical, algo que HBO supo hacer muy bien en la única temporada de la serie Vinyl.
Not everything is bad. It is fair to point out the positive aspects of the series. The setting manages to show the sordid life of the protagonist Jocelyn and her relationship with the guru Tedros (I laugh at the memory). Like all HBO productions, the technical aspect always stands out and is noteworthy.
There is also no denying that all the supporting actors do an outstanding job. Hank Azaria as Chaim, Jocelyn's manager, in his few scenes adds some interest. As do the rest of the characters who manage Jocelyn's music career, with the hypocrisy, falsehood and frivolity that they all carry in their DNA and makes them kings within the industry that they manage at will. All that part and that in the first episode is where it has greater presence, was what I wanted to see in depth. Also noteworthy is the work of actresses Rachel Sennot, whom I remember from Bodies Bodies Bodies Bodies and Suzanna Son. The former plays Leia, Jocely's friend and personal assistant, the voice of sanity in the midst of madness, and the latter plays Chloe, one of the members of Tedros' cult.
Continuing on the acting level, Lily-Rose Depp fits perfectly in the role of Jocelyn, the musical star who is preparing her new album, but the events of her personal life make her mentally unstable. Johnny Depp's daughter has been a great advocate for the series and the work of the creators, she gives her all with her character, although she doesn't have an extensive filmography and is making her own name, she has difficult scenes on her shoulders and comes off well, especially when compared to Tesfaye, who looks like an expressionless mannequin next to her.

Al igual que el resto de personajes que gestionan la carrera musical de Jocelyn, con la hipocresía, falsedad y frivolidad que todos ellos llevan en su ADN y les convierte en reyes dentro de la industria que manejan a su antojo. Toda esa parte y que en el primer episodio es donde tiene mayor presencia, era lo que quería ver con profundidad. Destacar también el trabajo de las actrices Rachel Sennot, a la que recuerdo de Bodies Bodies Bodies y Suzanna Son. La primera interpreta a Leia, la amiga y asistente personal de Jocely, la voz de la cordura en medio de la locura, y la segunda a Chloe, una de las integrantes de la secta de Tedros.
Siguiendo en el plano interpretativo, Lily-Rose Depp encaja a la perfección en el papel de Jocelyn, la estrella musical que está preparando su nuevo disco, pero los acontecimientos de su vida personal la hacen mentalmente inestable. What is the plot?
Jocelyn is a successful singer, idol of many young girls. Recently, her mother has died of cancer and, as she prepares to record her new album, she finds herself stuck, not feeling well, unfocused, unable to find her inner voice, unable to be herself. Those managing her career fear that her money-making machine will derail and she will enter a depressive phase, so the leak of a very explicit photo could cause chaos. Between Jocelyn and him they will start a romance, where manipulation, extreme situations and danger will be present. Will these broken idols manage to stay on top?
The idol consisted of six episodes, but by surprise, last Sunday, at the end of the fourth episode, it was announced that the fifth episode would be the last. Another sign that nothing went as expected. Needless to say, it will not have a second season and next Sunday we will see an episode that leaves some plots open. Perhaps with the passing of time, the perspectives on this production will change, but for the moment it will be remembered as a tremendous failure.

No hace falta decir que no tendrá segunda temporada y el próximo domingo veremos un episodio que deja algunas tramas abiertas. Quizás con el pasar de tiempo, las perspectivas sobre esta producción cambien, pero por los momentos será recordada como un tremendo fracaso.
