  1. The Machinist, a masterpiece of psychological horror@ismaca804d
    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=361537)

Brad Anderson has created a truly modern masterpiece of haunting with The Machinist.

Christian Bale gives possibly his most committed performance to date as Trevor Reznik, a man who disappears before our eyes in body and mind.

Shot on an incredibly tight budget with a stripped-down aesthetic by cinematographer Dan Lausten, it is a harrowing and intimate character study.

Kronos Quartet's haunting score keeps the viewer on edge from the start.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=361537)

As Reznik's insomnia accelerates with each sleepless night, he pulls you down the rabbit hole.

Jennifer Jason Leigh and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón are the film's mainstays, perfectly counterbalancing Bale's nerves.

The heartbreaking climax offers an ambiguity with few answers but many questions for the soul.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=361537)

Bale dropped a staggering 63 pounds to fully inhabit Reznik's consumed body, delivering perhaps the most committed performance ever filmed.

The Machinist is a masterpiece of psychological horror that will mark you forever. A film that will get under your skin.

  2. Retro Film Review: The Machinist (2004)@drax839d

    (source: tmdb.org)

In the early 21st Century, Hollywood seemed to have lost its ability to offer anything truly fresh or captivating to audiences. There are scant mainstream films that could be deemed original or exceptional, with The Machinist, a 2004 thriller directed by Brad Anderson, standing out as one of the rare exceptions.

The film centres on Trevor Reznik (portrayed by Christian Bale), a machine shop worker plagued by insomnia, enduring a year without sleep. While his condition doesn't impair his work performance, it manifests in a drastic weight loss and alienation from his colleagues. Bright spots in his life include Stevie (played by Jennifer Jason Leigh), a discount-offering prostitute, and Marie (portrayed by Aitana Sánchez-Gijón), a diner waitress where Trevor frequents nightly. Trevor's routine unravels following an encounter with Ivan (played by John Sharian), a menacing figure claiming to be his coworker. Ivan's presence distracts Trevor, leading to a tragic accident and the discovery of mysterious post-it notes in his apartment. Suspicion grows as Trevor believes everyone around him is part of a conspiracy.

Despite being set in an unnamed American city, The Machinist exudes a distinctly European feel. Barcelona serves as a backdrop, with numerous nods to European cultural heritage, particularly the works of Kafka and Dostoyevsky. The latter provides a crucial clue for the plot's resolution. The dark cinematography by Xavi Jiménez and Charli Jiménez creates a surreal ambiance akin to the 2001 Spanish thriller Intacto. Roque Baños' musical score, inspired by Bernard Herrmann's masterpieces for Hitchcock's films, further enhances the film's atmosphere.

The performances are stellar across the board. John Sharian, resembling Marlon Brando's Colonel Kurtz in Apocalypse Now, delivers a compelling portrayal. Jennifer Jason Leigh breathes depth into her character beyond clichés. However, it is Christian Bale who steals the show with his remarkable physical transformation, resembling teenage models and concentration camp survivors due to drastic weight loss. Bale captivates not only with his appearance but also with his acting prowess, convincingly portraying an individual's descent into madness.

On the downside, screenwriter Scott Kosar's efforts fall short in delivering an impressive plot resolution that feels simplistic and somewhat disappointing. The anticipated plot twist lacks originality, potentially leaving genre enthusiasts underwhelmed. Nevertheless, the dedication evident in The Machinist warrants recognition and recommendation. This film may even influence colloquial language by replacing "going De Niro" with "going Bale" in cinematic vocabularies.

    RATING: 6/10 (++)

The soundtrack serves as an element that produces a lot of intrigue and that gives the film that strange essence that remains present throughout the film, excellently reinforcing this feeling.

The construction of the world is strange and with multiple twists that do not seem to make sense at first, however these are later used to give meaning to various events that the plot houses, so each of these small details that are found in the scenery take on a notable importance as the film progresses, so considerable relevance is given to this section. In order to only focus on the setting, it can also be noted that a feeling of both disorder and bewilderment is palpable, adding a chaotic touch, which makes a lot of sense once you understand the reason behind it.

The plot is more complex than it seems at first glance and contains very interesting concepts in a subtle way, all of the above requires considerable attention from the viewer in order to be able to understand the various hints and fully understand the end of the work. Narratively the film is a rock star, first I will highlight the fact that it explores in a good way the consequences that insomnia entails, being something that can degenerate an individual both physically and mentally treating this disorder with the seriousness it deserves, added to this, is the fact that it is not truly known if the things that are raised are real or not because for both cases the The film provides enough elements to make them believable and plausible, ergo, the film acquires a certain level of complexity as a result of it, which suits it very well. The length of the film is an absolute success, every minute has a meaning and is important for the final outcome, this means that the film is not boring at any time because it is always adding something or reinforcing a previously established idea.

Trevor is a character with a very interesting background, throughout the film he is explored cautiously by giving subtle data from time to time about him, the interesting thing is that there is no certainty about this information making it have a more than intriguing role. In the face of the character himself, it can be denoted how he gradually becomes more paranoid as a result of the various events he goes through, the attractive thing about this is that elements are provided that can justify or not such behavior being something that is only revealed at the end of the film, in turn, at all times it is kept present how the absence of rest begins to make a dent in him, being noticed both in their physique as well as their behavior. All of the above makes him a complex protagonist with many nuances, which means that during all his time on screen he remains interesting, being able to throw all the weight of the plot on his back without problems.

The Machinist is a film with many extremely interesting plot twists that enrich the initial premise and make it more complex as it progresses by adding various elements that make it even more captivating, the way to develop its premise is excellent due in large part to the excellent performance of the actor. It is for all of the above that it deserves 4.5 stars out of 7, a film that I would gladly see again since I would surely be able to see another well-implemented detail.

  4. The Machinist a spectacular thriller@ismaca1049d

    image.png Image

Good psychological drama thriller with great direction and story.

What makes this movie even better is Christian Bale.

Top notch acting and horrible physical transformations.

According to the review he lost 60 pounds, which brought him down to around 120 pounds, which is inhuman for someone who is 6 feet 3 inches tall.

Bale wanted to get down to 45, but the producers wouldn't let him because it was too dangerous for him.

    image.png Image

Bale then regained weight and gained muscle to play Batman.

The plot revolves around Trevor, who has been unable to sleep for a year.

Fatigue severely deteriorated his body and mind.

One day, his colleagues turn on him because one of them lost an arm in an incident involving Trevor.

When Trevor seems to discover a plot against him, he feels guilty, becomes suspicious and then paranoid.

  5. The Machinist || The reckoning that begins in the conscience rots a person from the inside@cute-cactus1297d

Not sleeping for a long time has positive and negative effects. If I look at the good side, I can say living life to the fullest.

When 1/3 of the day is spent asleep, it can be considered as 8 wasted hours. When we don't sleep, it means an extra 8 hours. In a 24 hour day, who wouldn't want the extra 8 hours they can use?

If we spread the calculation over the long term; In a 60-year life, 20 years of time spent with sleep emerges. Let's think of 60 years as a full life; if it is a full life despite 20 years of sleep, it can be a much fuller life without sleep!

The negative effects of not being able to sleep are endless fatigue, constant weight loss and the psychological inability to distinguish between reality and unreality.

There are probably many other side effects that will vary depending on the individual.

So, what can be considered as factors that can cause insomnia?

Endless soul-searching... is the foremost one.

A good conscience is the most comfortable pillow... Clemens Brentano

Today, I watched a movie that started out good, then got annoying, but for some strange reason I couldn't stop watching it. The movie is called The Machinist

It is about the physical and mental transformation of Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale), who spends 24 hours a day awake and can't sleep, and shows what I think is an excellent example of what can cause this.

If I were to pull out the annoying moments in the movie with the help of tweezers, I could make an 'excellent' comment about the movie, but since it is not possible to tweeze the bad from the good and the good from the bad, I will keep my personal opinion short by saying that it was an enjoyable movie to watch.

    [source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/67TIS4o1pZPzgkHxQC09b0Zf8bL.jpg)

Every movie, music, play, etc. has its own audience, listeners and users. Saying that a movie is 'very good' or 'very bad' is just reflecting a personal point of view. I don't like to be too extreme and talk too much in order not to affect the thoughts in general. Even if it's a simple movie review, a review of the match watched or a political comment...

Going back to the beginning, you don't need to be very clever to know how a showdown of conscience can keep you up at night. Anyone with a healthy conscience has experienced restless and sleepless moments when subjected to momentary, hourly or nightly soul-searching.

But over a long period of time, I have no preconceived idea of how many people can experience this. The movie The Machinist showed me a preconception that I didn't have, a preconception that gave me a good chance to observe how a conscience can destroy someone from the inside.

    [source](https://www.themoviedb.org/t/p/w500_and_h282_face/ugAd0tf30p5pqusmGjrXJAPo5VL.jpg)

The choice to watch/not watch is always one's own decision. There is always the possibility that what one person likes, someone else may not like. If you don't have a good idea of what happens when judgment starts in the conscience, the movie can help, or if self-interest overrides conscience, maybe you want to balance the race!

  6. CineTV Contest: My favorite movie about work // The Machinist 2004.@ksmith71332d

Once again it is very pleasant for me to participate in another of the interesting and enjoyable contests of the film community of our platform; I think that now the crush has been practically instantaneous, because when I read this new topic about a movie, with which we identify ourselves in the workplace, it comes to my mind one of which I made a publication a year ago. I'll explain why and I hope you like it too, so join me.

    18399925.jpg-r_1280_720-f_jpg-q_x-xxyxx.jpg [Source Image](https://www.sensacine.com/peliculas/pelicula-52316/fotos/detalle/?cmediafile=18399925)

Given the above and the dynamics of the contest, I identify very much with the film "The Machinist" by American director Brad Anderson; this in reference to the work environment in which the plot develops, which tells us about a guy named Trevor Reznik, whose feeling of guilt surrounds him in a world of psychosis and parallel reality, to the point of affecting him physically and mentally. Hey! but that's not what happens to me ha,ha,ha. But rather to the theme of night shifts.

I must say that I like the realism that Christian Bale transmits when I see him operating machines on a production line; and in my case, although I am not a direct operator in my job, in my role as supervisor there are times when I do have contact with them and with the operators who handle them on a daily basis. And speaking of the day, my work includes the famous rotating shifts; something that in turn translates into night shifts; that is, one week during the day, the other in the afternoon and the other at night, just like Trevor.

    18821561.jpg-r_1280_720-f_jpg-q_x-xxyxx.jpg [Source Image](https://www.sensacine.com/peliculas/pelicula-52316/fotos/detalle/?cmediafile=18821561)

Of course, the strongest week is the five consecutive nights, taking into account that my functions are not limited only to the packing area, but I must make tours of the plant, where it is totally normal that there is equipment on, moving and causing a lot of noise (high decibels), so I must use hearing protectors, as in the attached image. I also remember the scene in which the workers argue because Trevor has changed his attitude; since in my work there is a very similar locker area ha,ha,ha,ha.

    IMG_20221102_181430.jpg

One of the acts in the movie that had the greatest impact on me is when Trevor gets distracted and is overcome by sleep, then accidentally activates the power button of a machine that cuts part of his partner's hand, while he was making a repair. Although it may seem impossible, I have seen similar accidents in which people are seriously injured; one of them happened to a friend who had been working 12 by 12 (continuous hours) for several months, he told me that he walked like an automaton and while checking a piece of equipment, he unconsciously brought his hand closer, losing the phalanx of two of his fingers.

    el-maquinista.jpgSource

Perhaps the accident was not as serious as Miller's (Michael Ironside), but my friend had to be rushed to the clinic; and although he got a well-deserved rest, the price was quite high. Fortunately, it didn't affect the mobility of his hand and afterwards he would advise us to take full breaks, if we felt sleepy to take a break. Sure, the atmosphere in "The Machinist" revolves around Trevor's insomnia, but it's something that reminds me a lot of my chores on a 24-hour production line.

    18394392.jpg-r_1280_720-f_jpg-q_x-xxyxx.jpg [Source Image](https://www.sensacine.com/peliculas/pelicula-52316/fotos/detalle/?cmediafile=18394392)

Talking about the film, Bale's performance is simply impressive, even this great actor lost a lot of weight and transmits a lot of realism to the work, something that is a great success. I find the character of Ivan detestable, an arrogant and mysterious guy, who personifies that dark side that everyone can have; When I watch this tape, I see myself working in the company (mind you, in the work scenes ha,ha,ha), although I also suffer from insomnia eventually. So this morning I got home around 7:15 am; and at this time (11 am) is that I will finish this post to go get some sleep.

    See you next time.

  7. The Machinist (2004)@minhajulmredol1413d

Today's protagonist is suffering from Insomnia, his condition is so bad that he hasn't slept for one year, can you imagine? His physical condition was detouring, losing weight day by day, it was just his skeleton. I googled about how long a human can stay awake and it refers to the longest experiment so far as 11 days. I do have sleeping issues but not like these, sometimes I call myself an insomniac but after a few google searches today I found too many bad situations that are way worse than I could imagine.

    wp6881667.jpg Image Source

The Machinist is a psychological thriller genre film. It was directed by Brad Anderson and written by Scott Kosar. Christian Bale is our main protagonist here as Trevor Reznik.

Trevor is a machinist and the issue of his insomnia makes him vulnerable in his workplace, his co-workers don't like him much, and after an incident, it went to its peak. Let's get some idea about Trevor's living, he lives alone in an unorganized apartment, his workplace, visits a prostitute regularly to whom he feels at home and both of them grow feelings for each other, and yes another place is the dining of an airport where a waitress called Maria is also a good companion of him.

Well, I forgot to mention the very first scene, we see Trevor in a messed up condition, as if he got beaten but he was carrying a dead body folded in a carpet to dump into the ocean, and then someone with a torch asks for his identity. So we can expect a murder or a crime by Trevor that he wants to hide, but whom? Throughout the rest of the story, we would see Trevor seeing someone called Ivan, who is kinda weird to us. This is the person that creates a distraction for Trevor which costs his co-worker's left arm in an accident, he keeps chasing after that anonymous person but his existence seems to be fake as per others' opinions when asked. Few other scenes too, that would feel like just hallucinations.

Enough of explaining the story, I was feeling the pain of being an insomniac a little bit. Like, without sleep I feel like a zombie, what I am doing or thinking becomes out of control, same shit with Trevor. You know, after a certain period of its runtime you would be able to predict what's coming ahead, not entirely but up to a level, I saw that coming too but in the end, it came and left me perplexed too.

The ending has a few realizations too for us. Lemme give you a hint about the ending without spoilers, there would be a ride of Trevor with Maria's kid Nicholas named Route 666, a ride of horrible scenes. That contains different people and incidents, you may relate them as different pieces of the puzzle at the end of the movie, in the end of the ride there were two routes indicating one as the route to hell and another to salvation, Trevor wanted to go right but Nicholas took their ride to left towards the hell and he came out senseless in Trevor's arm.

I would tell you to finish the movie and think about the ride again, you may rewatch it again, and find the whole story here, right before your eyes. I did and got the explanation and message of the whole story. Someone else may find it differently, that ending may serve them a different explanation, it depends. But trust me, I loved how they managed to portray the whole thing here too. I really really loved this movie, go for it, the story has way more to unfold than I have presented before you. Go for it, you would love this.

A whole experience watching again "The Machinist" (2004).

Hello friends of the cinephile community par excellence @Movies&TVShows, I want to comment with pleasure, about my experience watching again the movie The Machinist, from 2004; and it has truly left me satisfied to enjoy the performance of Christian Bale, who in an interview said that he underwent a strict diet to lose a lot of weight and thus assume the interpretation of the character of Trevor Reznik, who takes us on a journey to unravel the things that go through his head, as a result of a series of events that affect his personal and work life.9vWp6aU4y8kwnpS6w1FvPDaFgyHbYctr59iq5JsXyxJdNfJaccivEBVDKtaABpaZzdvrBqGQEBKar1o8VDEoGTRQbPH2UvkukerWu5YmugXqzJSQwKv5wjrTBLtqjRkYemzF7rfPZKwxxpvwG.jpg

In the first minutes of the film, we see a scene that I consider to generate some confusion, because it gives me to understand about the evasion of being incriminated for a possible murder, but it is nothing more than part of the psychosis suffered by this main character, who despite having a job and good coworkers (except for his boss), is quiet and lonely. He is only seen talking to an occasional roommate and a friend who also works in the evenings at a coffee shop he periodically attends.

Believe me, when I saw the film I was immediately hooked, since I identify with the character who works in a factory and I know what it means to work night shifts, since I've been doing it for 12 years hahaha. Also the fact that the actor is shown doing a job as a machine operator, gives great real character to the plot. Trevor manifests a terrible insomnia since a year ago and since then he has constantly lost weight, causing the concern of the only two girls in his life and that of his direct bosses, but everything really starts to change when one day a new co-worker appears, named Ivan, who is really mysterious because it seems that Trevor is the only one to see him, even in a strange gesture by Ivan, Reznik accidentally activates the ignition selector of a machine in the middle of repair, causing an accident in one of his colleagues, this damages the working relationship with his work friends and begins the sporadic appearance of Ivan in moments of strange and seemingly unreal. The plot leads the viewer to wander between what is dream and what is real in the mind of the protagonist, who writes numbers and words that only he knows their meaning. Then strangely he sees other papers appear that he has not written, adding some suspense to the film. When questioned about the accident at the factory, he confesses to having pressed the button through no fault of his own, because he was distracted by Ivan, the new worker, but when his bosses tell him that there is no such partner Trevor thinks it is some kind of plot to make him look insane (our friend definitely has problems), but what kind and because of what? The journey to discover these questions is fascinating, it is a film that keeps us attentive to every event, at no time is it boring because every detail can lead us to discover the truth and this is a great achievement by the team behind the scenes to make us feel part of the plot.9vWp6aU4y8kwnpS6w1FvPDaFgyHbYctr59iq5JsXyxJdNfJaccivEBVDKtaABpaZzdvrBqGQEBKar1o8VDEoGTRQbPH2UvkukerWu5YmugXqzJSQwKv5wjrTBLtqjRkYemzF7rfPZKwxxpvwG.jpg9vWp6aU4y8kwnpS6w1FvPDaFgyHbYctr59iq5JsXyxJdNfJaccivEBVDKtaABpaZzdvrBqGQEBKar1o8VDEoGTRQbPH2UvkukerWu5YmugXqzJSQwKv5wjrTBLtqjRkYemzF7rfPZKwxxpvwG.jpg

Even the director helps us in that, intertwining the order of the lapses in Trevor's subconscious, who at times mentally moves to the moments before and after the event, which represents a before and after the trauma that martyrs him until he goes momentarily mad, delighting the critical analysis made by the viewer (I saw it on an international channel) and that in its passage we do not even realize the time. And while the film reaches its climax, I remain fascinated with this journey in retrospective in the mind of this character who is Trevor Reznik, a man who gradually discovers that his conscience speaks to him and pushes him to perform, albeit at the wrong time, his most important act of constriction and that is to recognize himself as responsible for those events that marked his life and affected his memory. Certainly we human beings often prefer not to assume responsibility for our mistakes, however there is an inner voice that knows exactly what we should do, because even though we have what is called free will, as with Trevor, when it is time to take that step forward and say "it's my fault", until that moment we can sleep in absolute peace.9vWp6aU4y8kwnpS6w1FvPDaFgyHbYctr59iq5JsXyxJdNfJaccivEBVDKtaABpaZzdvrBqGQEBKar1o8VDEoGTRQbPH2UvkukerWu5YmugXqzJSQwKv5wjrTBLtqjRkYemzF7rfPZKwxxpvwG.jpg

Among my considerations, Christian Bale's performance is more than remarkable, magnificent. And seeing him act with such thinness, makes me think of the commitment and dedication he puts into his work are applaudables. A great film that also offers a profound teaching, which elevates it to a different level. It has truly been a pleasure to review this film, which in its end gives us that blow of sincerity that many of us need, but that we rarely accept.
