Come di consueto oggi vi porto dentro una nuova Anteprima di un articolo che fra qualche giorno o settimana vedrete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller, il mio blog interamente incentrato sul mondo delle serie tv e di cui, da qualche mese, ho deciso di regalarvi costantemente, in anticipo su quello che pubblicherò, gran parte dei post che vedrete su www.serialfiller.org.

Nelle first impression sulla quarta stagione vi avevo già accennato qualcosa. Le trovate qui in caso vogliate correre a recuperarle. La gioia con la quale avevamo accolto il ritorno di Midge e gli altri personaggi, era una gioia genuina e palpabile, come quelle che si provano nel ritrovare un amico lontano e che da tempo non si riusciva ad incontrare di persona. Può capitare, però, che quel nuovo incontro serbi anche qualche nota di delusione, qualche sbadiglio, qualche difficoltà ad "acchiapparsi" dopo tanta lontananza e a distanza di anni dai momenti migliori. E' quello che mi è sembrato accadere con The Marvelous Mrs Maisel 4.

Non allo stesso modo con cui seguivo, apprezzavo e tifavo nelle stagioni precedenti. Qualcosa si è incrinato nel nostro rapporto personaggio-spettatore. Cosa esattamente non so ma nulla è stato neppure lontanamente paragonabile al vecchio rapporto che ci legava. Midge ha gettato alle ortiche una grande occasione quando si è allontanata dal mondo patinato e di successo di Baldwin. Da li una discesa che potrebbe eludere e preparare una forte ascesa possibile nella stagione 5 (o almeno cosi ci suggerisce l'ottimo finale). Da lì in poi la protagonista è entrata in un vortice, poco convinto, di fallimenti e autopunizioni, anche queste poco convinte. Il mondo di Midge, in qualche modo si è sgretolato senza che ce ne fosse davvero bisogno e forse questa è stata la chiave del gradimento minore verso questa stagione. L'evoluzione (o meglio l'involuzione) è sembrata un pochettino sciatta e superficiale. Midge era davvero pentita? Era delusa da se stessa? Era delusa dagli uomini della propria vita? Ha smesso di credere in se stessa? Non lo abbiamo mai veramente capito. E' solo sembrato di assistere ad un velleitario purgatorio dal quale si procederà, presumibilmente, verso il paradiso. Ma se l'evoluzione di Midge ha preoccupato, senza tuttavia manifestarsi in un disastro, non si può dire lo stesso per gli altri personaggi, tutti quanti apparsi spaesati profondamente. Da Abe fino a sua moglie, da Susie al Mr. Maisel, fino ad arrivare a tutti gli altri personaggi secondari della serie, nessuno può dirsi "migliorato" in termini narrativi rispetto alle stagioni precedenti. Forse qualcosa si è rotto o forse questa amorfità è stata voluta per preludere a qualcosa di stupefacente nella quinta stagione. Del resto, volere male alla Signora Maisel è letteralmente impossibile.

The fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel aired in the early part of 2022 and released, as always, by Amazon Prime Video. For the first time we denoted some creaking in the scaffolding crafted by the always witty Amy Sherman Paladino. The fantastic Mrs. Maisel seemed less bright and titillating than usual, also accomplice to a particularly "no" phase that her character has experienced this season. Even the dialogues, to tell the truth, which have always been a real strength of the show, suffered from a bit of fatigue. Nothing of concern but it is fair to point out that, this now long-running series, there was a slight fatigue to accompany the 8 episodes of the last season.

In the first impressions on season 4 I had already mentioned something to you. You can find them here in case you want to rush to catch up. The joy with which we had greeted the return of Midge and the other characters was a genuine and palpable joy, like the kind you feel when you find a distant friend whom you haven't been able to meet in person for a long time. It may happen, however, that that new meeting also holds some notes of disappointment, some yawning, some difficulty in "catching up" after so much distance and years after the best of times. That is what seemed to happen to me with The Marvelous Mrs Maisel 4. Did I enjoy most of the dialogue? Yes. Did I follow the various storylines with interest? Yes. Did I root for Midge and Susie? Yes. Not in the same way I followed, appreciated and cheered in previous seasons. Something cracked in our character-viewer relationship. What exactly I don't know but nothing has been even close to the old relationship between us. Midge threw a great opportunity out the window when she walked away from Baldwin's glossy, successful world. From there a descent that could elude and prepare for a strong possible rise in season 5 (or so the excellent finale suggests). From there on, the protagonist entered a whirlpool of failures and self-punishment, also unconvincing. Midge's world somehow crumbled without really needing to, and perhaps this was the key to the minor liking towards this season. The evolution (or rather the involution) seemed a tad sloppy and superficial. Was Midge really repentant? Was she disappointed in herself? Was she disappointed in the men in her own life? Did she stop believing in herself? We never really understood that. It just seemed like we were witnessing a vague purgatory from which we would proceed, presumably, to heaven. But if Midge's evolution worried, yet without manifesting itself in disaster, the same cannot be said for the other characters, all of whom appeared deeply bewildered. From Abe to his wife, from Susie to Mr. Maisel to all the other secondary characters in the series, no one can be said to have "improved" in narrative terms from previous seasons. Perhaps something is broken, or perhaps this amorphity was intended as a prelude to something amazing in season five. After all, to want to hurt Mrs. Maisel is literally impossible.

Ladies and gentleman oggi è tempo di tornare a NEW YORK e di tornare dalla fantastica MRS MAISEL!

Anteprima di quello che troverete Nella Mente di un SerialFiller fra una settimana circa.

Febbraio 2022 segna la fine di un'attesa durata 2 anni, 2 anni che sono sembrati ancora più lunghi a causa di una pandemia che ci ha fatti piombare nello sconforto di un lutto e di una tragedia globale, Rivedere Midge Maisel ha significato anche re-incontrare personaggi capaci di farci stare bene, di farci dimenticare tutti i problemi, tutte le ansie quotidiane. Ridendo e scherzando siamo già arrivati alla quarta stagione. Tante, tantissime se si pensa a quanto questo show avesse pochissimo hype al suo esordio, avvenuto oramai 5 anni fa. Son poche le serie che possono vantare tale longevità e tale qualità. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel è una di queste. Sarà riuscita a preservare questo enorme valore anche in questo avvio di quarta stagione o qualcosa inizia a scricchiolare?

Partendo dal presupposto che una premierè di una serie cosi famosa, cosi forte, cosi positivamente accolta da pubblico e critica sin dall'esordio, non può essere la cartina al tornasole di quanto la serie si sia confermata o meno rispetto ai fasti del passato, possiamo dire che il primo episodio della quarta stagione ha fornito dei segnali contrastanti. Da un lato son tornati quei dialoghi frizzanti e quelle scene straordinariamente scritte (ad esempio quella girata sulla ruota panoramica a Coney Island), dall'altro abbiamo assistito ad un passo indietro di Midge troppo repentineo rispetto a quanto avvenuto sul finale della terza stagione. Focalizziamoci un minuto su questi 2 aspetti. Il season finale della terza stagione aveva certificato la volontà di Midge di porre sè stessa davanti a tutto il resto, che si trattasse di figli, attenzioni familiari, convenzioni sociali. Il riscatto definitivo sarebbe passato da un tour in giro per il mondo attraverso il quale farsi conoscere ed affermarsi definitivamente. Ad inizio quarta stagione assistiamo ad un crollo di quel castello, un collasso di quelle speranze che viene raffigurato anche con un momento abbastanza schizofrenico della protagonista in una delle scene iniziali. Midge è fuori dal tour. Ha fallito. E' stata estromessa. Non sappiamo ancora perchè o per cosa ma sappiamo che tutto quell'enorme investimento che lei aveva fatto su sè stessa è improvvisamente diventato un gigantesco boomerang. Come se non bastasse, nel frattempo, la nostra protagonista si era affrettata a prendere decisioni economiche ancora più folli (come quella di ri-acquistare la sua prima casa proprio nel momento del KO nel tour di cui sopra).

February 2022 marks the end of a 2 year wait, 2 years that seemed even longer due to a pandemic that plunged us into the despondency of global grief and tragedy, To see Midge Maisel again has also meant meeting characters capable of making us feel good, of making us forget all our problems, all our daily anxieties. Laughing and joking, we have already reached the fourth season. Many, many if you think about how this show had very little hype at its debut, which took place now 5 years ago. There are few series that can boast such longevity and such quality. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel is one of them. Will it be able to preserve this enormous value in this start of the fourth season or something begins to creak?

Assuming that a premier of a series so famous, so strong, so positively received by the public and critics since the beginning, can not be the litmus test of how much the series is confirmed or not compared to the glories of the past, we can say that the first episode of the fourth season has provided mixed signals. On the one hand, those sparkling dialogues and those extraordinarily well-written scenes (for example, the one shot on the Ferris wheel at Coney Island) are back, while on the other hand we have witnessed Midge taking a step backwards too abruptly compared to what happened in the third season finale. Let's focus for a minute on these 2 aspects. The season finale of season 3 had certified Midge's will to put herself before everything else, whether it was her children, her family's attention, or social conventions. The definitive redemption would have passed through a tour around the world through which she would have been known and established for good. At the beginning of the fourth season we witness a collapse of that castle, a collapse of those hopes that is also depicted with a rather schizophrenic moment of the protagonist in one of the initial scenes. Midge is off the tour. She's failed. She's been ousted. We still don't know why or for what but we do know that all that huge investment she had made in herself has suddenly become a giant boomerang. As if that wasn't enough, in the meantime, our protagonist had rushed to make even crazier financial decisions (such as re-purchasing her first house right at the moment of the KO on the tour mentioned above).

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel 3: Always implacable

There are TV series incapable of making mistakes. One of these is certainly The Marvelous Mrs Maisel. The product of Amy Sherman Paladino is confirmed as one of the best TV series of 2019 and in general over the past 10 years. His third season had a very difficult task. Confirm yourself and do not flatten out. She managed to achieve both results and apparently without any effort. This is thanks to a script that focuses almost everything on brilliant dialogues, fast-paced rhythm, perfect sets and a colorful but elegant theatricality. Each character seems to be artfully created to make the most of it, to be fundamental to the construction of an amazing mosaic. Mrs Maisel and obviously her interpreter shine on everyone. Rachel Broshanan now seems to have almost taken on the features and gestures of Midge. An incredible unicum of sparkling and elegance, comedy and tenacity.

Il prodotto di Amy Sherman Paladino si conferma una delle migliori serie tv del 2019 ed in generale di questi ultimi 10 anni. La sua terza stagione aveva un compito difficilissimo. Confermarsi e non appiattirsi. E' riuscita a raggiungere entrambi i risultati ed apparentemente senza alcuno sforzo. Merito di una sceneggiatura che punta tutto o quasi su dialoghi brillanti, ritmo incalzante, scenografie perfette ed una teatralità colorata ma elegante. Ogni personaggio sembra essere creato ad arte per rendere al massimo, per essere fondamentale ai fini della costruzione di un mosaico stupefacente. A brillare su tutti Mrs Maisel ed ovviamente la sua interprete. Rachel Broshanan sembra oramai avere quasi assunto le fattezze e le gestualità di Midge. Un unicum incredibile di frizzantezza ed eleganza, comicità e tenacia.

The third season opens seeming to want to tarnish the star of Midge. If on the one hand his career seems to have finally taken the road to success, or at least the affirmation, on the other it seems that the whole universe of affections and family that revolves around Midge is crumbling. Parents without work and forced to leave the house where Midge was born and raised. Ex present husband and affectionate but now destined to fall in love again and move on. More and more grown children but increasingly distant from a touring mother. Even Susie, this year a real co-star, at some point will seem to move away to try to diversify her wallet through the star of Sophie Lennon. In all this Midge, thanks to the tour with Shy Baldwin, fills every American club and place with laughter, opening the door to a tour in Europe that if on the one hand they could consecrate it on one side, they risk to make it move away from their lives. But it is in the dialogue with Benjamin on the season finale that Midge explains and explains the reasons for this choice. Comedy is his life, it is that lightning that runs through his heart and around which he can tell and tell himself, bringing joy to others. The cliffangher we see in the season finale opens the door to a thousand scenarios. Will our Mrs Maisel still be so determined? Will he be able to redeem himself? Or maybe he will come back to want a quieter life perhaps with the man of his life beside him?

La terza stagione apre sembrando di voler offuscare la stella di Midge. Se da un lato la sua carriera sembra aver finalmente intrapreso la strada verso il successo, o quanto meno l'affermazione, dall'altra sembra che tutto l'universo di affetti e familiare che ruota intorno a Midge si stia sgretolando. Genitori senza lavoro e costretti ad abbandonare la casa dove Midge è nata e cresciuta. Ex Marito presente e affettuoso ma oramai destinato ad innamorarsi ancora ed andare avanti. Figli sempre più cresciuti ma sempre più distanti da una madre in tourneè. Persino Susie, quest'anno vero e proprio coprotagonista, ad un certo punto sembrerà allontanarsi per cercare di diversificare il suo portafoglio attraverso la stella di Sophie Lennon. In tutto questo Midge, grazie alla tourneè con Shy Baldwin, riempie di risate ogni club e locale d'America aprendo le porte ad un tour in Europa che se da un lato potrebbero consacrarla da un lato rischieranno di farla allontanare ancora dalla propria vita. Ma è nel dialogo con Benjamin sul finale di stagione che Midge spiega e ci spiega i motivi di questa sua scelta. La commedia è la sua vita, è quel fulmine che le attraversa il cuore ed intorno al quale raccontare e raccontarsi portando giubilo agli altri. Il cliffangher che vediamo nel finale di stagione apre le porte ad mille scenari. Sarà la nostra Mrs Maisel ancora cosi determinata? Riuscirà a riscattarsi? O forse tornerà a desiderare una vita più tranquilla magari con accanto l'uomo della sua vita?
