  1. The Master, a fabulous psychodrama@ismaca664d
    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=112983)

Paul Thomas Anderson's 2012 psychodrama The Master is nothing less than a cinematic opus, a layered character study that has only grown in esteem over time.

Joaquin Phoenix gives the best performance of his career as Freddie Quell, a troubled World War II veteran who spirals into self-destruction.

Philip Seymour Hoffman also excels as the enigmatic title figure who preaches new-age philosophy.

Behind the lens, PTA's direction is stunning, kinetic yet painterly. His meticulous attention to period detail transports the viewer, and Jonny Greenwood's haunting soundtrack is a vital character. Every frame seems destined for the art galleries.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=112983)

The narrative unfolds not through dramatic beats, but through subtextual gestures and glimpses of the human condition. PTA tackles dense themes such as brainwashing, faith, trauma, and the boundaries between manipulation and free will.

Like the great modern epics, it sticks in the soul long afterward: an unflinching mood piece that leaves audiences pondering their place in an uncertain universe. Hoffman and Phoenix, bravo for your titanic nakedness.

A true work of art that deserves to be among the pinnacles of cinema. PTA is simply one of history's greats and, with The Master, he has cemented that status forever. I predict his stature will grow with each viewing.

At the 2013 Oscars, it received 3 nominations, including Best Actor for Hoffman (a devastating loss that year). Phoenix should also have been included for his totally involving performance.

    [Image](https://www.filmaffinity.com/ve/filmimages.php?movie_id=112983)

The National Society of Film Critics named The Master the best film of 2012, praising PTA's profound artistic achievement. With this work, PTA rightfully joined the ranks of American auteurs.

Worldwide box office receipts came in at a respectable $30 million, against a budget of $35 million,

Phoenix took home a Golden Globe for his amazing work as Freddie. A triumph that should have preceded an Oscar, but politics is politics. His rawly wounded presence shines brightest in my memory of the film.

The Master is one of the best films of the decade and cemented PTA on a higher cinematic plane that deserves our appreciation for generations to come. His films improve with age like the best wines.

  2. The Master a controversial movie@ismaca1032d

    image.png Image

This film is a drama about the Church of Scientology. Lancaster Dodd, played by Joaquin Phoenix, an intelligent man with unshakable beliefs, forms a new religious organization in 1952 that quickly gains popularity in the United States.

Freddie Quell, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, a young drifter, becomes his trusted assistant.

However, as the sect's influence expands and its followers become more fervent, Freddie begins to question the group's motives.

    image.png Image

The film paints a vivid picture of individuals searching for direction and purpose in America's tumultuous post-World War II era, which is marked by instability and uncertainty about what the future holds.

Ultimately, they are drawn to the Cause and its charismatic leader.

A slow, contemplative film that delves into the minds of its characters, it received mixed reviews and was acclaimed by some for its performances and visual style.

Both its two lead actors and Amy Adams, who played Dodd's wife, were nominated for Oscars.

  3. A review of "The master": sublime acting in a movie you will love or hate@aurzeq1291d

    Source of the background picture

    Plot

In The Master, Freddie (Joaquin Phoenix) is a World War II veteran who, after being given a number of opportunities for reintegration, struggles to find his place in the world. He has been entirely torn apart by the experience of war. His stormy path crosses with that of a highly charismatic man who claims to be the "master" of a kind of religious organization. This man is confident that his "methods," which are based on a mix of psychoanalysis, mysticism, and much exaltation, would allow him to assist his new companion. The views of his mentor are soon, nevertheless, called into doubt by Freddie, who finds himself once more facing the world alone.

    Why you should watch it?

It's challenging to fully comprehend "The Master" the first time you see it. Anderson isn't really interested in explaining; instead, he wants the viewer to feel the conflicted emotions Freddie is experiencing. Since The Master is a psychological investigation that goes deep, it does not employ the conventional instruments of mainstream cinema to accomplish its goals. And although it may seem to be running in circles, it is actually creating a climate that darkens more and more.

The pseudo-religious subject matter is utterly important in the movie. The only ways to break free from the social restrictions are to seek an identity that reverts to urges of an animalistic stage and to grin

And Freddie Quell is a clear example of this. The three things that define him are alcohol, sex, and the sea. While his fixation with alcohol makes him sick, his obsession for women, as evidenced by his real love for his fiancée Doris, is not always harmful. The sea and sexuality are border spheres in Greek mythology: Venus was created from a drop of Uranus' sperm that fell into the sea, a sea like the desert that Freddie travels through in search of Doris, a limitless sea in which, at the beginning of the movie, Freddie ejaculates after creating his Venus of sand, a symbol of a sexuality that can only be lived joyfully and freely by rejecting a leader who, however deeply loved, although assisting him, can only imprison him.

    The performances of a remarkable group of actors must take the lion's share in a film that is almost a psychoanalytical analysis of its protagonists and the relationships between them: if Amy Adams is perfect in utilizing the brief but significant space at her disposal, the two protagonists, and in particular their powerful and impressive duets, are the heart of the entire movie. In this role, Philip Seymour Hoffman provides one of his best performances; his Lancaster Dodd is a nuanced character who understands how to captivate the audience with his charisma while also alienating him with sudden outbursts of rage and a creeping discomfort;

When it comes to providing a deeply physical and animal interpretation, Joaquin Phoenix just outdoes himself. It even starts to make us think of the best De Niro, and it's not without complexity and intrigue too.

And the praises should go also to the director because he creates a movie with images of exceptional beauty and power and also thanks to the excellent work of the entire technical team, particularly Mihai Malaimare Jr.'s photography, which is even better in the impressive 70mm version and helps to make the American 1950s seem authentic.

    Conclusion

The Master is thus unquestionably a "great" film in more than one sense; It is grandiose without being repetitious, has clear and intellectual writing, and features intense performances. it is intricate and rarefied. Of course it has its flows since during the roughly two and a half hours of viewing, there is a clear disparity between the meticulous care taken with the filming and the series of protracted (someone may even say somniferous) discussions that, with time, tend to get a little bit confusing. ![](https://images.ecency.com/DQmSfqQLgwL5Ycw7Em7JwRLtmP9UmjjvagCbkiUVaNRTUFV/black_video.gif) #

  4. The Master – Una película con actuaciones supremas@irenenavarroart1611d

Greetings to all, today I want to tell you about a 2012 movie called The Master, this was directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman, although it is not new it was on my to-do list, I have always been attracted to films that include the issue of mental illness as part of their main theme or as a complement, it is a very sensitive subject but like any good film this one manages to make us think and make us uncomfortable, because good art always has that arouse an emotion of pleasure or displeasure as Kant thought, that is to say that the aesthetic experience is not only always linked to what is beautiful, this film is an example of this, it is a story that can be hilarious, sensitive, annoying , sad or happy in each of its parts, but what it does not stop being is never complex, because human dramas always are.

The plot is based on a man named Freddie Quell who belongs to the US armed forces and who in the 50s has to return to American territory after having fought against the Japanese and having suffered the dramas of war, like many veterans. his mind is not right, isolation, lack of sexual relations, death, heartbreak and loneliness have joined a family history that ends up leading his life to alcohol, but everything changes when after a while he meets a man who treats him kindly for the first time.

When in a movie two characters with a complex psyche are together, it seems that one competes with the other, here I have a very personal observation and it is that while one of them is called Master, it seems that he envies in a certain way the freedom of his protégé, of get excited and laugh or insult people, it seems that the teacher is the one who is imprisoned inside the castle that he has built, in turn, Freddie's mental fragility to a certain extent becomes strength, to be able to deal with the loss of what was supposed to be a different future, this keeps him captive within a trauma, living again after what he lived through because of the war and feeling the pleasure of resting next to someone he loves seems impossible for him.

Sometimes I think that although the film academy has its successes and failures, one of the most obvious is not having given Joaquin Phoenix an Oscar for this performance long before the Joker, that is, there are so many masterful performances that this actor has given us. actor, it seems incredible that he has not been awarded a statuette for best actor before in so many films where he has done an impeccable job, from the way he speaks, poses, walks, gestures, his way of looking and his laughter, they are all such sensitive performances and it moves me a lot. I can only say that you see the movie if you have not done so to enjoy his performance.

  5. "The Master" [Anderson 2012] - movie review@mandibil3600d

Boy, is this one a challenge. The question "what is it about?" is almost too concise. One should rather ask "is this really a movie?". Now in a scientific sense it is, but plot- and story wise, i am not so sure. There is a basic story about a second world war veteran, Freddie, meeting a strange cult leader, Dodd. But i am almost certain that, that is not what the movie is about. So i guess .. it is up to you to decide for yourself.

    image1dc3b.md.jpg

Now, i might give you a few inputs to decide for yourself. There are more than a few flashbacks to Freddies time in the navy, on a certain Island, probably in the pacific. Then there are three or four showings of a beautiful wake of a ship, which i believe is a metafor for both looking back and getting away. Freddie is in the claws of the state, when he is in the navy. When he gets out he is in the claws of another cult, lead by Dodd. So there are some parallels there, and the reference to "The Master", may work on several fronts - referring to Dodd, Freddie, The Cult, The Navy ,alcohol, women .. or even the director himself. Who knows ... and to be honest .. who cares.

    image0b795.md.jpg

I like challenging movies, but i do not like movies that has such a incohesive plot and story, that it feels like it has been improvised along the way. I like when the viewer is invited in to participate in developing the movie, but actually having to figure out everything myself is just annoying. It feels like an artistic fuck you to the viewer, to be quite honest. This might just be another case of "the emperors new clothes"

    imagefe4b2.md.jpg

I may be ignorant. That is always possible. But a movie has to be engaging and helping the viewer to get into the world or the feeling, that it is attempting to portray. If you have to twist your brain to figure out what it is about at the same time, it is just too much. The actors do a fine job, surely but that is not enough for any movie. It is not particularly artistic in any way either so it is hard for me to find much good to say about this.
